ci(til): auto-merge TIL posts behind a required fact-check gate - #104
Conversation
TIL PRs passed CI and then expired unreviewed (#92, #101), and the one-pending-post gate turned a week of scout runs into noops. Publish autonomously, using only vendor-native gh-aw controls: - create-pull-request auto-merge: squash, expires 2d (daily-til, til-writer) - threat-detection continue-on-error: false; the default let a flagged detection (#92, prompt_injection=true) still open the PR - til-fact-check: new gh-aw workflow (governance pattern) that verifies every claim against its primary source and posts a `fact-check` check run - skip-if-match: blocked scout runs no longer spend model calls - arxiv.org allowlisted; til-writer can now reach its research sources - stale "human merge" prompt text removed Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to TIL posts will now merge automatically. Until fact-check becomes a required check, they can publish after only CI passes. The fact-check gate also has gaps: adding a label later does not trigger a recheck, a result can land on newer commits than the ones checked, and fork PRs get no result. Close these gaps, or defer auto-merge, before relying on this gate. - Line 11: Update the workflow trigger types to include the labeled pull-request
activity, so adding the til label starts a new run and rechecks the
label-dependent gate.
- Around line 10-12: Update the pull_request trigger configuration in the
fact-check workflow to permit fork PRs to produce a fact-check result, including
non-TIL PRs. Account for fork credential restrictions by providing a trusted
path that does not expose credentials or run the agent workflow unsafely on
fork-controlled code.
- Line 66: Update the fact-check workflow around `target: triggering` to compare

line 68, disable or remove the auto-merge setting so neither workflow can merge
after only check passes.

Do not attach an old analysis result to a newer head.
If the PR head changes while the agent checks its checkout, target: triggering makes the handler fetch the current head SHA when it posts fact-check. A success based on the earlier files can therefore satisfy the check on content the agent did not read. Before posting, compare the analyzed commit with the current head and fail or retry when they differ. The documented handler behavior explicitly targets the latest head. (github.github.com)

…llowed-files - rejected-til-topics excludes PRs closed by the gh-aw expiry job (its own "automatically closed because it expired" comment): #92 and #101 were never rejected, only unreviewed. Verified on live data: [101,92,77,...] -> [77,...]. - Slugs must match ^[a-z0-9-]+$: proxy.js negotiates markdown only for /blog/[\w-]+, so #101's dotted slug would have lost its markdown twin. The fact-check pre-step fails any non-kebab post file deterministically; the writer prompts state the rule. - allowed-files content/blog/** -> content/blog/*.mdx (gh-aw's matcher is */** only, no character classes; this blocks subdirectories and non-MDX). GitHub docs: events triggered by GITHUB_TOKEN do not create workflow runs, so bot-enabled auto-merges left main without push CI/CodeQL/Scorecard (none from 09-12 until #107, a human merge). The owner chose the existing PAT (GH_AW_CI_TRIGGER_TOKEN), scoped to create-pull-request only. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Why
TIL PRs #92 and #101 passed every check and then expired unreviewed after 7 days. While each was open, the one-pending-post gate turned every scout run into a noop. Last post published: 2026-09-09.
What (vendor-native gh-aw v0.87.10 only)
create-pull-request.auto-merge: squash, expires: 2d,draft: falsein daily-til and til-writer.threat-detection.continue-on-error: false. The defaulttruelet PR [til] DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash Review: Pushing KV Cache Compression Limits #92 open withprompt_injection: true; with auto-merge on, it would have shipped.til-fact-checkworkflow, following the gh-aw governance pattern. It usescreate-check-run(namefact-check, targettriggering) and re-verifies every claim in atilpost against its primary source. Non-TIL PRs get an immediate success.on.skip-if-match: 'is:pr is:open label:til'(repo-scoped by default), so blocked scout runs no longer spend model calls.arxiv.orgadded to the allowlist; til-writer's allowlist now matches the research it is told to do.Merge preconditions (owner actions, in order)
gh secret set OPENROUTER_API_KEY --app dependabot. Dependabot-triggered runs don't get Actions secrets (GitHub docs), and the fact-check agent calls the model even on the NOT_TIL path. Without this secret, a requiredfact-checkblocks every Dependabot PR.fact-checkto rulesetmainrequired status checks, then merge. Until then, posts could auto-merge oncheckalone.Live test results
fact-check= success.fact-check= failure, "1 claims failed of 19". It caught "Parameters: Not specified", missed the architecture and price errors.Security review (gh-aw compile safe-update notice)
GH_AW_CI_TRIGGER_TOKEN.arxiv.orgadded (read-only research source). til-writer gains the same research domains daily-til already has.cat/ls/head/tail/wc/curl, web-fetch, GitHub read toolset). Its only write is one check run, via safe outputs, after threat detection.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
