Switches FigCraft's CI to the suite's shared gate workflow and takes the slow platform builds off the pull-request path. Depends on storytold/craft-common-actions#69; merge after it. Until then this PR's CI fails, because gate.yml doesn't exist yet.

  • ci.yml calls storytold/craft-common-actions/.github/workflows/gate.yml@main. That workflow brings the cached apt install, nextest, rust-cache saved only from main (keyed on the root Cargo.toml, so profile changes start a fresh cache), and a check that Cargo.lock is unchanged. Every push to main now runs to the end, and pushes to a PR branch cancel their older run. It replaces the separate fmt, clippy, test, layers, assets and wasm steps (two jobs) with the one cargo xtask ci run. xtask ci runs every step the old file ran: cargo fmt --all --check, clippy with -D warnings, cargo test --workspace, the layers check, the assets check, and the wasm32 check (which also builds and tests the plugin workspace). The one difference is that xtask ci doesn't pass --locked to clippy and test; the gate's Cargo.lock check catches a lockfile that needed updating. The apt package list is the old file's. The old 35 and 30-minute job timeouts become the gate's 60.
  • The old test step deliberately ran without craft-fonts. The gate checks out craft-fonts at the suite's default pin and sets CRAFT_FONTS_REQUIRED=1, so the tests now see the fonts a release embeds. release.yml pins 43913056ce82a3fdad0ef69f6b88d1dc922a8104 and freebsd.yml pins a71c20e30af613287c504f7e685ca8fad77752bc; because they differ, craft-fonts-ref is left out and the gate uses the suite default.
  • freebsd.yml already ran nightly, on pushes to release and on PRs that change the workflow or the FreeBSD packaging. Only the comment and the position of the schedule block change.
  • windows-arm64.yml is unchanged: it already runs nightly and on pushes to release.

A CI-speed PR for the cargo xtask ci speed changes follows. Every craft app gets the same pair of PRs. Background: storytold/craft-common-actions#60.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Automated quality checks now run through a shared workflow with Linux system packages provided.
    • Pull-request runs are grouped by branch and canceled when superseded; runs from other events use unique groups and are not canceled.
    • FreeBSD workflow documentation now clarifies that nightly VM builds run on main, publish to release, and run for pull requests affecting the workflow or FreeBSD packaging.

…SD nightly and on release

ci.yml calls the shared workflow (cached apt packages, nextest, main-only cache saves, Cargo.lock check). FreeBSD runs nightly and on pushes to release instead of on pull requests. Depends on storytold/craft-common-actions#69.

📝 Walkthrough

The CI workflow now delegates its test gate to a reusable workflow and changes concurrency grouping. The FreeBSD workflow’s comments describe its existing triggers, which remain unchanged.

Changes: CI workflow execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared CI gate
.github/workflows/ci.yml
The workflow replaces local test and wasm jobs with a reusable gate. It passes a pinned craft-fonts-ref and Linux system packages. Pull-request runs share a concurrency group by ref and can be cancelled when superseded; other runs use a unique run ID and are not cancelled.
FreeBSD workflow triggers
.github/workflows/freebsd.yml
Comments describe the existing nightly, release-push, and path-filtered pull-request triggers. The trigger entries are reordered without changing their conditions.

Possibly related issues

  • storytold/soundcraft#900: This issue reports missing pull-request execution of cargo xtask ci; the shared gate runs that command through its workflow.
  • storytold/cadcraft#1935: This issue reports a missing pull-request cargo xtask ci gate, which this change adds for FigCraft. Its deny and audit work remains separate.
  • storytold/filmcraft#2813: This issue reports missing visible pull-request checks; this change delegates CI to a shared gate that runs cargo xtask ci.
  • storytold/cadcraft#1932: This issue reports missing pull-request CI and suggests cargo xtask ci; this change adds the gate pattern, while deny and audit checks remain separate.

Possibly related PRs

  • storytold/figcraft#1208: The shared gate delegates to cargo xtask ci, whose test flow this PR changes.
  • storytold/figcraft#1226: This PR adds a Linux package to local CI installation; this change passes the package list to the shared gate.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5067f

Pin the shared gate so CI remains reproducible and upstream workflow changes are reviewed explicitly.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5067f

CI now depends on an independently changing shared workflow. Repository permissions remain read-only and no secrets are forwarded, limiting exposure. No introduced vulnerability was established, but the exact workflow executed and its interrupted-run behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Control of the shared workflow's main branch can change this repository's primary CI commands and validation policy without changing its reviewed revision. This adds a CI dependency path, but no broader token or secret authority is visible, and mutable external execution already existed before the PR. Other consumers' exposure is not changed by this repository's caller addition.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment retains no findings. Its candidate at the shared-workflow invocation remains deferred because a valid candidate-bound verification receipt is missing; neither exploitability nor safety is established by that deferral.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — At the inspected upstream snapshot, Rust cache saves exclude pull requests and require the default-branch ref name. The apt cache defaults to saving only on default-branch pushes after successful installation. These are substantive countercontrols to cross-trust cache publication, although their execution at the reviewed run is not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected gate runs its command with Bash failure propagation and then checks Cargo.lock, without visible failure suppression. Rust caches can still save after failure, as they could before this PR, and the pinned cache action rechecks save-if in its post-run source. No introduced cache-authority failure was established; interrupted and concurrent execution outcomes remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If reproducible CI policy is required, pin the reusable workflow and its nested shared actions to reviewed commits, with coordinated updates. This trades automatic suite-wide fixes for explicit dependency review and is a hardening option, not a verified vulnerability.

Pin the shared gate workflow to a reviewed commit.

.github/workflows/ci.yml:22 follows the mutable main branch. A later change in storytold/craft-common-actions can change the gate, or its nested actions, for the same FigCraft revision. This prevents deterministic CI reproduction and permits upstream workflow changes to execute without a change to this repository.

The comment at line 21 makes the mutable reference intentional, but it does not make the workflow immutable or safe. Pin the reference to the reviewed gate commit.
