fix(app): ask before ⌘Q quits with unsaved changes (#857) - #1489
Part of #857: on macOS, ⌘Q / Quit quits with unsaved changes without asking. Most of the issue's other parts are already on main (see the table). The "don't ask again" option the reporter suggested is not in this PR, so #857 stays open for it.
Related: #784 (the macOS menu bar). This adds the app menu (About, Services, Hide, Quit) only.
Summary
On macOS, winit installs a default app menu whose Quit (⌘Q) ends the process at once through AppKit's terminate:. FigCraft's unsaved-changes guard (windows::on_close_request) never runs, so changes are lost without a question. Only the recovery copies survive, and they reopen on the next start.
This PR installs craft-libs' app menu (craft_menu::mac::install_app_menu, macOS only) from the eframe app creator. It uses the same 92d392c rev as the other craft-libs dependencies. The menu's Quit sends the main window a close request, the same path as the window's close button. With unsaved changes the window answers CancelClose and asks Don't Save / Cancel / Save. If the menu can't be installed, winit's menu stays and the failure is logged.

⌘Q / Quit menu loses unsaved changes without a prompt
Fixed here: the question asks, and Cancel keeps the app running
A "don't ask again" option on that prompt (suggested)
Not in this PR. The straightforward version saves the answer as "Don't Save", so a quit then deletes the recovery copies, losing work that an unasked quit on main keeps. A safe version needs a separate quit path that keeps them; left for the maintainers to decide
⌘W loses unsaved changes
Already guarded on main: ⌘W is file.close, which refuses a dirty file with a toast (menus.rs)
Dock Quit / Apple-event quit
apple_events.rs already maps Event::Quit to the same close request; unchanged
Force quit / crash
Already covered by recovery copies (apps/figcraft/src/recovery.rs: copies at most every few seconds, reopened on the next start)
Large files failing to join
On main since #889 (287b506b): sessions above 64 MiB, and "This file is too large to join here (up to N MB)" past the limit
The app's logic, which handles close requests, runs even while the main window is minimised. The frame that acts on a close doesn't run then. Two quits in that state used to queue the main window's close twice:
the first let the main window take over another window;
the second then quit the app over that window's unsaved changes, as if answered.
close_current now queues a window's close once.
Tests
windows_tests::a_quit_with_unsaved_changes_waits_for_the_answer: a main-window close request with unsaved changes sends ViewportCommand::CancelClose, shows the question and doesn't quit; Don't Save then sends Close. With the CancelClose send removed from windows.rs, it fails.
windows_tests::quitting_twice_before_the_window_draws_closes_it_once: a clean main window and another window with unsaved changes; two quits through the logic alone; afterwards the unsaved file is still open and the app hasn't quit. With the once-only check removed from close_current, it fails.
The menu itself is craft-libs code, tested in craft-libs.
figcraft-ui-egui: 816 passed, 1 failed. The failure is clipboard_fence_tests::a_synthetic_copy…, which needs the OS pasteboard and fails the same way on clean main on this machine.
figcraft app tests: 60 passed.
cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask wasm pass.
Checked in the running app on macOS, with the menu click scripted through System Events:
On main, Quit from the app menu with an unsaved document ended the process 0.26 s later, asking nothing.
With the craft-menu wiring, the app menu reads About FigCraft; Services; Hide FigCraft; Hide Others; Show All; Quit FigCraft. Quit FigCraft with an unsaved document left the app running (polled for 60 s) with the Unsaved changes question showing. Quit with no unsaved changes exited at once.
These runs used an earlier build of this branch with the same menu wiring, so no screenshot is attached because it shows a since-removed option.
The Dock / Apple-event quit couldn't be triggered in the test environment.
To check by hand: build, draw a rectangle in a new file, press ⌘Q. The question asks, and Cancel keeps the app.
Docs: docs/hardware-parity.md (macOS row, status line, history).
Limitations
Quit is a main-window close. With several windows open, each ⌘Q closes one window (asking about that window's files). Nothing is lost, and the parity row says so.
Cargo.lock adds craft-menu, craft-quit, craft-keymap, muda, keyboard-types and crossbeam-channel. Cargo's minimal resolution also moves a few existing windows-sys 0.52 → 0.61.2 and getrandom 0.3 → 0.4 edges to versions already in the lock. --locked builds pass.
The control channel's app.quit still quits without asking, as all programmatic calls avoid dialogs.

Explanation
The changed dependencies, macOS app-menu installation, close-request tests, duplicate-close guard, and parity documentation support the [#857] quit behavior. The duplicate-close guard prevents a second quit from bypassing the unsaved-changes question. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Explanation
The PR implements the active [#857] ⌘Q requirement. apps/figcraft/src/main.rs installs the macOS app menu, and crates/ui-egui/src/windows_tests.rs verifies CancelClose, the unsaved-changes question, and Close after DontSave. Existing behavior covers ⌘W, recovery after force quit or crashes, large-file joining, and Home startup. The requested “don't ask again” option remains absent, as the PR description states.
Resolution
Implement the [#857] “don't ask again” behavior, or update the issue requirements to remove it. The quit path must preserve recovery copies when the user selects that option.

winit's default macOS app menu ends the process through AppKit's
`terminate:` at once, so ⌘Q and Quit from the menu bar never asked about
unsaved changes (the recovery copies were all that survived).
- Install craft-libs' app menu (craft-menu, same rev as the other
craft-libs pins; macOS only). Its Quit sends the main window a close
request, the same path as the window's close button, so
windows::on_close_request cancels the close and the unsaved-changes
question asks first. Failure to install keeps winit's menu and logs it.
- windows_tests::a_quit_with_unsaved_changes_waits_for_the_answer pins
the contract the menu relies on: a close request with unsaved changes
sends CancelClose and asks; Don't Save then closes.
- Like the close button it closes the main window only: with several
windows open, each quit closes one (documented).
- docs/hardware-parity.md macOS row, status line and revision history.
- Cargo.lock: craft-menu, craft-quit, craft-keymap, muda and their deps;
cargo's own minimal resolution also moves a few windows-sys/getrandom
edges to versions already in the lock.

Responses to the points in the summary above, beyond the inline thread:
Merge risk: repeated Quit closing a window with unsaved changes. Confirmed and fixed; details in the inline thread.
Linked issues: #857 asks for more than this PR does. Agreed. The description now says Part of #857 instead of closing it, with what is already on main:
recovery after a forced quit: apps/figcraft/src/recovery.rs.
The reporter's "don't ask again" suggestion is not in this PR. The straightforward version records the answer as "Don't Save", and quitting then removes the recovery copies, losing work that an unasked quit on main keeps. It needs a separate quit path that keeps them, which is left to the maintainers.
Docstring coverage (50% of 2 functions). Not changed. The undocumented function is main in apps/figcraft/src/main.rs. None of the app crates documents main (figcraft, figcraft-cli, figcraft-server); each describes the binary in its //! module docs. The other analysed function, the test helper frame, has a doc comment.
Possibly related: #784. This PR adds the app menu (About, Services, Hide, Quit) only. The description now links it as related, not fixed.
Clippy timed out on CodeRabbit's side. Locally, cargo clippy --locked -p figcraft -p figcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings passes on this head.
Merged, thank you @ChristopherLinnett! With this, ⌘Q on macOS asks about unsaved changes before quitting, through the shared craft-menu. It landed with your commits as they were.
