Stacked on #104 (base fix/91-placed-bounds, itself on #102 and #97). Retarget to main as those merge.

Three bounded corrections to a prepared copy. Root causes and the Orca measurements are in the C11 creator-pair investigation (D1, D5 and the supports finding).

1. Per-plate re-grid (both modes)

A multi-plate project from a larger-bed printer carries its build items on that printer's plate grid. Orca rebuilds plate membership from geometry, so items outside the U1's cell for their plate are listed Outside and the plate will not slice.

  • Rule (Orca 2.4.0 PartPlate): stride = int(bed width/depth) * 1.2, cols = compute_colum_count(plates), origin = (col * sx, -row * sy).
  • Used only when the source stride differs from the U1's and every build item's printing footprint lies inside the cell its own plate record names (a non-tautological cross-check). Any mismatch, unreadable bed, item on no plate record, or non-contiguous plate numbers leaves positions as they were and reports the condition.
  • Each plate's items are translated by (U1 cell origin - source cell origin), then the plate's own minimal fit into the U1 plate. Translation only: rotation, scale and Z tokens are copied verbatim, instances are addressed per build item, no mesh, paint or part transform is touched.
  • A project whose bed already IS the U1's, or any single-plate project, is left byte-identical.
  • Disclosed in the settings summary (placement_changes, layout): "Repositioned plate N objects to the U1 plate layout ...".

2. Prime tower: assessed, never moved, never called safe

The depth of a prime tower is decided by Snapmaker Orca when it plans the tool changes (purge volumes, ribs, brim, clearance); it is not in the project. From the file Studio knows the corner, the width and the brim. That is enough to prove a tower is outside the printable area (its corner, or its known width plus brim, leaves the plate) or on an object (its corner is inside a printing footprint), and never enough to say it is inside or clear. So each plate's tower is reported as outside_proven, overlap_proven or unknown, with the known X extent, the known minimum Y, and (marked as an estimate, a square of the width) its rectangle and clearances to the plate edges and objects. wipe_tower_x/y are not written by Studio.

  • Exception, placement not tuning: a project authored on this very U1 plate keeps its tower in every mode (the starter profile's constant would otherwise replace it).
  • Left as it was in this PR, and visible in the evidence: in Recommended, a project from a different bed still gets the starter profile's tower constant (165, 200.821), which for C11a is proven to be on top of the object after the re-grid. Resolving that needs the full tower footprint (pinned-Orca derivation in TOWER-GEOMETRY.md) and is deliberately not done on a width-only argument.

3. Recommended supports: precedence

The starter reset of the support policy is intentional and stays. The exception follows an explicit precedence (code: support_intent.py; docs: ARCHITECTURE, CHANGELOG, mode chooser copy):

order rule outcome
1 explicit disable: enable_support 0 in the project's settings or on any object stays off; any enforcers/paint disclosed as unused; nothing declared
2 positive intent: painted support enforcers (paint leaf state 1), support_enforcer volumes, enable_support 1 on an object enable_support, support_type, support_filament, support_interface_filament kept as the creator set them and declared
3 starter reset: no support data, or blocker-only data (support_blocker volumes, blocker paint) the starter's support settings, as the mode says
4 otherwise creator values (Preserve never reaches this module)

Evidence (four separate columns; outputs in C:\Users\kunal\claude-workspace-audit\u1-workflow-benchmark-20261010\outputs-regrid)

  • structural (XML): build-item count, basis/Z tokens verbatim, translation deltas, object .model parts byte-identical, paint attribute counts, part records, component counts, plate records, tower keys.
  • computed geometry: stride, cols, cells, formula check (predicted vs recorded), tower status/extent/estimate/clearances.
  • GUI loading and fresh slicing: later lane (recorded as pending in results.json).
case modes produced grid formula (matched/items) build items tower keys vs source
C01 (10 plates) both regridded 14/14 moved by plate Preserve identical; Recommended starter constant
C11a both regridded 2/2 plate 2 -72 mm X Preserve identical (outside_proven, plate 2 unknown); Recommended starter constant (overlap_proven)
C11b (already U1) both same grid n/a byte-identical byte-identical
C05, C08, C10, U1-single-clean both single plate n/a byte-identical Preserve identical; Recommended identical for U1-bed projects
C04, C06 refused by the existing converter (settings Studio cannot vouch for: bottom_shell_layers, brim_type); analysed: 6/6 and 2/2
C02, C03 refused by the existing converter (skeleton_infill_density; part id used twice) before and after this PR

C11b reports validated_ok: false ("object/plate count changed"): the same as the PR-#104 baseline (the slice cache's plate JSONs are dropped); not changed here.

Which #109 statements become obsolete

  • Obsolete when re-grid succeeds (layout.status == "regridded"): MULTI_PLATE_REFUSAL ("Studio does not reposition multi-plate projects"), fixable = not multi_plate, and "All N plates fit ... open the project in Snapmaker Orca to arrange the plates" as the answer for a copy Studio has just laid out; the fidelity audit's one-plate "outside by N mm" claim (removed here).
  • Still correct for unresolved cases (status == "unresolved", or a plate larger than the U1 plate): the refusal and the "arrange in Orca" wording, and the preflight multi-plate UNKNOWN.
  • Never obsolete: any statement about prime towers other than "Studio does not move them".

Verification

  • backend/tests/test_regrid.py (45 tests, through convert_to_u1 on projects built at test time from the committed Orca-authored base).
  • Backend pytest 3358 passed, 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826) and build clean.

Not covered

Orca GUI/slicing validation of the outputs is a separate lane. Only the Bambu/Orca grid rule is verified. C02, C03, C04 and C06 do not convert (unrelated, pre-existing).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Multi-plate projects can be translated to the U1 plate grid when their recorded plate assignments are verified. Unresolved layouts are reported rather than guessed; prime towers are assessed but not moved.
    • Recommended preparation keeps support settings when the project provides evidence that supports are intended. Explicitly disabled supports remain off, and blocker-only data does not enable them.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Repair reports now disclose placement corrections and support-setting decisions.

…intent

Three bounded corrections to a prepared copy, in both modes:

1. Per-plate re-grid. A multi-plate project's build items sit on the
SOURCE printer's plate grid; Snapmaker Orca rebuilds plate membership
from geometry, so items outside the U1's cell are "Outside" and the
plate will not slice. When the source stride differs, each plate's
items are translated by (U1 cell origin - source cell origin) using
   Orca's rule (stride = int(bed) * 1.2, cols = compute_colum_count,
origin = (col * sx, -row * sy)), then the plate's own minimal fit.
Only when every build item's footprint is inside the cell its own
plate record names; otherwise nothing moves and the condition is
   reported. Translation tokens only: rotation, scale and Z verbatim;
   instances addressed per build item.
2. Prime tower. Per plate, the tower rectangle (get_at fallback, width,
brim) must be inside the U1 printable area and clear of every printing
footprint (role-aware); a valid position is untouched, otherwise the
first free candidate in a fixed order, else reported.
3. Support intent. Recommended keeps and declares enable_support /
   support_type / support_filament / support_interface_filament when the
source marks where it needs support (painted supports, enforcer
volumes, per-object enable_support); otherwise the starter reset
   stays.

The audit says what happened (translation only) and makes no one-plate
"outside" claim about a multi-plate copy.

Verified: backend pytest 3344 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest
(826 passed) and build clean.

…trix evidence

- Prime towers are never moved or called safe: their depth is decided by
Snapmaker Orca when it plans tool changes, so the file proves only
outside (corner or known width leaves the plate) or on an object
(corner inside a footprint), else unknown. Known extent, an estimate
rectangle and its clearances are reported per plate. A project already
authored on this U1 plate keeps its tower in every mode.
- Support intent follows an explicit precedence: explicit disable
(enable_support 0 in the project or on an object) > positive intent
(painted enforcers, enforcer volumes, per-object enable 1) > starter
reset (no data, or blocker-only data) > creator values. Mode chooser
copy, CHANGELOG and ARCHITECTURE say so.
- Tests cover enforcers only, blockers only, enforcers + disable, painted
with global 0/1, no data, Preserve unchanged, already-U1 placement
  identity, paint/helper/object-file preservation.

…ross-check; consistent release notes

- Recommended no longer replaces a project's own wipe_tower_x/y with the starter constants
(profile.apply_swap leaves them), and declares them so Orca does not reset them on import.
Studio never moves a tower, in either mode.
- regrid cross-check now requires each item's whole footprint inside its recorded cell, not
just its centre; a straddling item leaves everything unmoved.
- prime_tower: a blank/none/nil enable flag no longer counts as "stated on".
- Doctor READY line with an outside tower no longer says "and slice"; verdict stays a
profile-compatibility verdict (setup readiness remains the printer check's job).
- api.ts: drop the unused prime_tower.outside.width.
- CHANGELOG: all #109/#110 entries in [Unreleased] (none appended to the dated [1.5.1]);
remove the "does not rearrange" / "does not keep supports" contradictions.

Tests: backend 3702 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc 0, vitest 79 files / 902 passed,
vite build 0; guide 50/50.

…tention stated as unverified; multi-plate READY line no longer says slice

- CHANGELOG: [1.5.1] keeps only what release/v1.5.1 shipped and carries no date until
the release is assembled; the 11 entries from the #108 merge and the #109/#110 entries
sit under [Unreleased]. Code for all of them is present in this candidate.
- ARCHITECTURE: declaring the project's tower coordinates is the file-level behaviour;
retention after Orca import is not verified.
- doctor: the multi-plate READY line says "review it before slicing" instead of
"and slice", matching the placement note it carries. Wording only; verdict unchanged.

Verified: backend pytest 3702 passed, 49 skipped; guide check 50/50. No engine change.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Correct the stale statements that a tower is moved.

The module docstring says Studio corrects the layout by "moving a tower". The correct docstring says it will "place the prime tower". The code and the later docstring text state that towers are only assessed and never moved. Update both statements. The same stale wording exists in comments in repair.py ("one tower position per plate") and convert.py ("keys the layout correction moved").

Keep XML item enumeration consistent with geometry.build_items.

A reachable valid multi-plate model can contain a prefixed core item with printable geometry followed by an unprefixed item whose object has no points. measure_items skips the later item, so _plan_regrid creates only the earlier item’s offset. rewrite_items_by_index then treats the later unprefixed tag as ordinal 0, applies the earlier offset to it, and returns moved == len(offsets). _apply_offsets accepts the rewrite.

The printable item remains at its source-grid position, which can leave its geometry on the wrong target plate cell. Match prefixed core item tags at the enumeration boundary:

Suggested fix
-_ITEM_TAG_RE = re.compile(r"<item\b[^>]*/?>")
+_ITEM_TAG_RE = re.compile(r"<(?:[A-Za-z_][\w.-]*:)?item\b[^>]*/?>")

When both items are measured and planned, the existing moved-count guard correctly rejects the mismatch because fewer tags are rewritten than offsets exist. It also rejects cases where the offset keys do not match the writer’s ordinals.

Report unresolved layout reasons only for multi-plate projects.

Line 171 adds unresolved to the report for single-plate projects. That list includes unreadable-item reasons (line 111) and "source or the U1 printable area is not a rectangle" (line 127). _disclose then writes "Plate positions were left as the source had them: ...". _settings_summary copies that line into warnings. A single-plate project never has its positions moved, so this warning is misleading. It also conflicts with the stated goal that single-plate projects are unchanged.

_apply_offsets can set status to "unresolved" and clear offsets when the reader and writer disagree. Line 176 still runs. report["plates"] then lists moves that were never written. cells_ok also stays True. _assess_towers then subtracts the target-grid origin from items that are still on the source grid. A tower can get a wrong overlap_proven or unknown result.

Populate plates only when the rewrite succeeded. Otherwise mark the layout as not established.

Update the flow after _apply_offsets so report["plates"] is populated only when
report["status"] is "regridded"; otherwise set cells_ok to False so
_assess_towers does not treat the rejected rewrite as established.

Declare restored tower coordinates.

When the source and destination polygons match, regrid.py restores wipe_tower_x and wipe_tower_y but records them only in tower_kept_from_source. It does not add them to setting_changes.

repair.py passes only keys from placement_corrections and other change records to preset_deviation.declare. Therefore, the restored tower keys are not declared. Since Recommended mode clears different_settings_to_system, Orca can replace the restored coordinates with the named preset values.

Record each restored tower key in report["setting_changes"] using the existing change-record format. Extend test_an_already_u1_multi_plate_project_comes_out_placement_identical to assert that both keys are declared.

Fix the re.sub replacement. It deletes a triangle instead of adding the attribute.

The replacement string has no group references. It replaces the whole matched <triangle .../> element with the text paint_supports="4". The mesh loses one triangle and gets stray text in <triangles>. The assert "paint_supports" in part check still passes. The "Orca-authored base" claim in the module docstring is therefore false for the painted fixtures. The preservation tests also compare the mesh with itself, so they cannot detect this.

Keep the original element and insert the attribute. If paint and paint_blocker are ever combined, the second substitution must target a different triangle. Otherwise the same triangle gets a duplicate paint_supports attribute.

Update the triangle substitutions in the fixture-generation code so each
replacement preserves the full matched `<triangle .../>` element and inserts
`paint_supports` before its closing marker. If `paint` and `paint_blocker` are
combined, make the second substitution select a different triangle to avoid
duplicate attributes.
