Fix DKB purple screen, freezes and rubberbanding - #506
I have read and followed the Coding Guidelines to the best of my ability.
I have put [HUMANMADE] in the title if the pr was human-mande
Summary
This PR fixes three problems in Donkey Kong Bananza.
Freezes, crashes and rubberbanding. Gameplay freezes or crashes a few minutes in: in the first mine section, and every time you break the banana. Moving also rubberbands. The log shows commands read wrong: "Unimplemented engine", "unknown host method", constant buffer offsets like 0x910e0002 (#392).
The cause is how far the game gets ahead of Eglantine's GPU thread. A present waits for that frame's GPU fence so the game can't overwrite data the GPU thread hasn't read yet. Since 690f80e, it stops waiting as soon as a GPU channel is suspended on a semaphore, and waits only for the previous frame (for Mario Kart World, whose GPU can wait on the CPU there). Donkey Kong Bananza's channels wait on each other every frame, so it always ran a frame ahead, and it overwrote memory the GPU thread hadn't read yet.
With this PR, Donkey Kong Bananza waits for each of its frames, like games whose channels never suspend. EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD still overrides it, and other games are unchanged.
I tried a general rule first: give up on the frame only once the GPU thread has nothing else to run. That doesn't separate the two games. Mario Kart World's channels also wait on each other, and waiting for each of its frames took its title screen from about 18 ms to 31 ms per frame. It runs a frame ahead without reading anything wrong, so this PR leaves it alone.
The present stats line also counts how many of the last 600 presents returned before their frame was done.
Purple screen. From the mode select on, the game shows a flat purple screen with only the UI on top, in the intro cutscene and in gameplay. It runs shaders that use tensor-core math, and they aren't part of DLSS. Eglantine only emulates that math for a game's DLSS, so these shaders are skipped and the image they feed is never written (#459). #363 had a commit that turned the emulation on by default for this ("Without it DK Bananza starts on a purple screen"), but when #363 was merged with nx2 it went back to the old opt-in.
With this PR, Donkey Kong Bananza's tensor shaders are always emulated. Other games are unchanged: upscaling networks (Kirby Air Riders' and the one the code calls title 4) keep the quick bilinear stand-in, so they don't take minutes to compile, and Fortune's Weave's DLSS works as before. I first emulated every tensor shader no upscale stands in for, but the shader cache makes that choice once per program, at its first dispatch, so the last commit keys it on the game instead.
Donkey Kong Bananza 1.0.0 and update v458752 (Windows 11, RTX 5080, MSVC Release, nx2 8615d8d, EDEN_NX2_FENCE_FLUSH_US=0 for the #494 crash). A scripted 165 s run from a new game through the first mine section:
freezes before: 6 of 9 runs read commands wrong at 125-136 s, then froze or crashed
with EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD=0: 3 of 3 runs clean
with this PR: 7 of 7 runs clean (1.0.0 and the update), every present waited for its frame
purple screen: the intro cutscene, the wall-punch scene and the mine tunnel render, with no purple frames on 1.0.0 or on the update. A third tensor shader runs in the first mine section: with only the first two emulated, more than half of the update run's frames from about 104 s on were purple. The first two compile in about 40 ms each, and no frame took over 55 ms when the third first ran.
I also played it docked with EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD=0. Breaking the banana, which crashed every time before, worked, and the rubberbanding was gone.
Waiting for each frame costs speed where the GPU thread is busy: in the mines a frame goes from about 19 ms to 30 ms, because the game and the GPU thread now take turns instead of overlapping. Elsewhere it stays at 60 fps.
On current nx2 the game crashes when the first "Punch" prompt appears (4 of 4 runs). That crash comes from the batched GPU submissions added in #494, not from this PR: with EDEN_NX2_FENCE_FLUSH_US=0 the same scripted run gets past it every time.
Mario Kart World 1.8.0 (title screen with the drive-around demo, 150 s): no change, all presents still run a frame ahead, at about 18 ms per frame.
Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave (DLSS network on and off) and Kirby Air Riders: no change, their tensor shaders are rejected or emulated as on nx2 and Kirby's upscaler still uses the bilinear stand-in. I checked them with the earlier version that also emulated other games' shaders without a stand-in; the final version only applies to Donkey Kong Bananza's program id.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Donkey Kong Bananza now waits for the current frame to finish before presenting it by default. The EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD setting can override this behavior.
Tensor-core emulation now supports Donkey Kong Bananza and eligible DLSS evaluations, including cases where the game’s own network may draw.
Bug Fixes
Periodic presentation statistics now include replies received before the current frame is ready, making frame-presentation behavior easier to monitor.
690f80e stops waiting for the presented frame's fence once a GPU
channel is seen suspended on a semaphore acquire. Donkey Kong Bananza's
channels wait on each other every frame, so it always ran a frame ahead
of the GPU thread and rewrote memory the GPU thread hadn't read yet. In
its first mine section 6 of 9 runs misread commands (Eglantine-Community#392: unknown
engines and host methods, constant buffer offsets taken from command
words) and froze or crashed, and moving rubberbanded. Waiting for each
frame (EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD=0), all runs played through, and a player
saw neither.
Wait for each of its frames, as for games whose channels never suspend;
EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD still overrides. A rule that gives up only once
the GPU thread has nothing else to run does not tell the titles apart:
Mario Kart World's channels wait on each other too, and waiting for its
frames took its title screen from 18 to 31 ms per frame, though it runs
ahead without misreading anything. Donkey Kong Bananza pays similarly
where the GPU thread is busy (19 ms frames in its mines become 30 ms).
The present stats count the presents that ran a frame ahead.

Summary
Frame presentation mode and statistics src/core/hle/service/nx2_gsv.h
When EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD is unset, Donkey Kong Bananza waits for the current frame. The environment setting still overrides this default. Present statistics count replies returned before the current fence is ready and report that count in the periodic log.
For active DLSS chains, EmulatesNativeTensorPrograms checks the chain failure state and GameDlssBlocker(). When no chain is active, it enables emulation for the Donkey Kong Bananza program ID. The comments describe these emulation and tensor-lowering conditions.
Djihads80/Eglantine#369: The issue reports a Donkey Kong Bananza freeze during tensor-enabled particle effects; this PR changes tensor-program emulation for that game.
Djihads80/Eglantine#437: The issue reports dropped compute dispatches in Donkey Kong Bananza; this PR changes handling for that game’s tensor programs.
Djihads80/Eglantine#507: The issue reports Donkey Kong Bananza purple-screen and crash behavior; this PR changes its frame waiting and tensor emulation.
Possibly related PRs
Djihads80/Eglantine#363: Adds Donkey Kong Bananza tensor lowering, which this PR extends with game-specific tensor-program emulation.
Djihads80/Eglantine#503: Changes the same present path and EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD fence behavior.
Djihads80/Eglantine#465: Introduces EmulatesNativeTensorPrograms for game DLSS evaluation, which this PR updates.
The change makes Donkey Kong Bananza wait for each frame's GPU fence by default, which addresses the reported purple screen and freezes, and it limits tensor-program emulation to that game outside DLSS evaluation. The author reports clean runs. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains. Frame time may rise in some scenes, and the change was tested only on Windows with an NVIDIA GPU.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to fef7d
The change is narrowly scoped and preserves existing checks, but its resource use and behavior during failures are not fully established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new exposure is additional Bananza guest shader content entering existing tensor expansion and host graphics compilation. The evidenced impact is local compilation work and rendering availability, not new service, credential, or infrastructure authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Guest instructions remain subject to mapped-memory reads, a 65,536-instruction capture ceiling, branch-target bounds, and supported HMMA shape and register checks. The changed eligibility boolean does not remove these controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The source documents large HMMA expansion and minutes-long compilation for another title. This supports resource-containment uncertainty for the newly enabled path, but does not establish Bananza-specific exhaustion or a new security finding.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider an expanded-instruction or compilation-work budget with an explicit recovery outcome for expensive native programs. This would strengthen local availability containment beyond the existing source-instruction ceiling.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #392 is open. Its coding requirement is to stop Donkey Kong Bananza stream corruption and semaphore hangs. The issue links these to command memory that the game rewrites after submit, while presents return frames ahead. The reviewed diff of src/core/hle/service/nx2_gsv.h changes the default for program ID 0x040074A01BF12000. When EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD is unset (-1), frames_ahead becomes 0, so the present waits for the current frame's fence. The environment override still applies, and other titles keep the existing automatic path. The epoch-snapshot experiment (EDEN_NX2_EPOCH_SNAPSHOT, commit d3b4fb5) is not in this PR. The issue marks that experiment as unverified, so this PR does not need it. The semaphore-region fix (2cfdf53) is listed for a later contribution to #363, not for this PR. Remaining uncertainty: the runtime results (clean Bananza runs, 6 of 9 failing runs before) are author-reported. The repository does not show them, so the fix is not confirmed by runtime evidence here.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The frame-wait change in nx2_gsv.h supports #392. The PresentStats ran_ahead counter and its log field are diagnostics for the same behavior, so they are in scope. The tensor-emulation change in src/video_core/engines/kepler_compute.cpp is not connected to #392. It addresses the purple screen (#459), which the PR description names as fixed but which is not among the supplied linked issues. The objectives derived from linked issues do not mention the purple screen or tensor-program dispatch. The current diff restricts the change: the active-DLSS-chain path keeps its previous logic, and outside a chain the function returns true only for program ID 0x040074A01BF12000. Other titles therefore keep their previous result, which the earlier FAIL reason did not allow. The header comment changes (kepler_compute.h, lower_to_maxwell.h, shader_environment.h) describe this same tensor behavior, so they follow the same scope question. This assessment relies on the AI-generated summary for those comment-only files; their diffs were not read.
Resolution
Move the tensor-emulation change (kepler_compute.cpp, and the related comment edits in kepler_compute.h, lower_to_maxwell.h, and shader_environment.h) to a separate pull request. That pull request must link #459 and state that only Donkey Kong Bananza changes. Alternatively, add #459 as a linked issue for this PR so its requirements can be assessed against this change. Keep the frame-wait change and the ran_ahead diagnostics in this PR.

The present stats counted a present as running a frame ahead whenever
it took the previous-frame path: also when EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD=1 then
waited for the current frame (the GPU thread was behind), and not when
a wait for the current frame timed out. Check the frame's fence when the
present returns instead.

Donkey Kong Bananza runs two compute programs with matrix multiplies (HMMA) outside any DLSS
evaluation. HMMA is only lowered for a game DLSS evaluation the game's own network may draw,
or with EDEN_NX2_TENSOR set, so both are rejected. The upscale stand-in for rejected tensor
programs finds no input/output pair in their handles (a 2880x1620 RGBA8 image and two
256x256 ones), so the dispatches are skipped and their output is never written: from the
mode select on, the game is a flat purple screen with only the UI on top (issue Djihads80#459).
Djihads80#363 made HMMA lowering the default for this (13e8298: "Without it DK Bananza starts on a
purple screen"), but its merge with nx2 (b01dba5) went back to nx2's opt-in, so nx2
still shows the purple screen.
Keep the opt-in where a stand-in exists and emulate the rest: outside a DLSS evaluation,
EmulatesNativeTensorPrograms() returns true unless FindUpscaleImages(), the pair search
UpscaleInsteadOfNativeProgram() already did, finds an input and a larger output image of the
same format. Upscaling networks (title 4's, Kirby Air Riders') keep the bilinear stand-in, so
title 4's network is still not compiled. Fortune's Weave's DLSS passes are unchanged (the
chain decides there). EDEN_NX2_TENSOR still lowers every HMMA program (=stub: D = C).
DK Bananza's two programs build in 35-38 ms each on an RTX 5080. The intro cutscene and
the first gameplay area render; before, both were purple.

Donkey Kong Bananza runs a third compute program with matrix multiplies
in gameplay (0x211692f900 on 1.0.0, 0x2116782900 on update v458752).
Some of its dispatches get the plain-copy upscale stand-in (960x540 to
1280x720). In others the pair search matches two images of a format the
copy can't blit, so EmulatesNativeTensorPrograms() leaves the program
unlowered, UpscaleInsteadOfNativeProgram() declines the format, and the
dispatch is skipped ("native shader dispatch required"). The screen
turned purple again in the first mine section: in 1 of 17 runs on
1.0.0, and in the run on the update.
Emulate all of the game's tensor programs, as EDEN_NX2_TENSOR does.
Other titles keep the pair search and their stand-ins.

The upscale pair search only decided a program's emulation at its first
dispatch: the shader cache keeps that result for the program's address.
Later dispatches were skipped or emulated whatever the search found, and
an upscaling network whose first dispatch had no pair would be lowered
(title 4's takes the host driver minutes to compile).
Outside a game DLSS evaluation, emulate Donkey Kong Bananza's programs
only. Other titles' tensor programs are handled as on nx2.

Brings in upstream `nx2` e736dfd (57 commits), mainly for OOT, which now gets past its startup
abort. Donkey Kong Bananza's open map holds 25.3 fps (1% low 20.8 against 22.9 before the merge, one
run each; facing away 60 fps, 1% low 51.0 against 55.2), rendering unchanged (baseline 0.959).
### Added
- **Upstream's work since the last merge**, among them: `WaitForAddress` arbitration type 3
(`WaitIfEqual64`, the OOT fix), Phi nodes of more types in the SPIR-V backend, the H0_NH1 half
source fix, the NUP update's display version in the game list tooltip and NUP fixes, updated shared
font data, the Polish language code, the subgroup size check for compute pipelines, and conditional
barriers on Intel's ANV driver.
### Changed
- **Upstream removed the "Use the game's own DLSS" setting.** The game's network runs where it can,
and `EDEN_NX2_DLSS_REPLACEMENT` still asks for the replacement.
- HMMA emulation stays on by default outside recognized game DLSS evaluations, where upstream limits
it to Donkey Kong Bananza.
### Not taken from upstream
- **Donkey Kong Bananza's wait for every frame at present (Eglantine-Community#506).** It is meant to stop freezes and
rubberbanding, but it took the open map from 25.2 to 19.0 fps and the view away from it from 60 to
37. `EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD=0` turns it on.
- **Upstream's new CI pipeline** (`ci.yml` and the workflows, scripts and `VERSION` file that go with
it). `dev` is this fork's default branch, so its daily schedule would run here and publish
pre-releases. `release-binaries.yml` stays.
- **Mapped-size storage buffers on every native compute dispatch (Eglantine-Community#535).** Only game DLSS passes use
them, as upstream's Eglantine-Community#561 did before it was reverted (Eglantine-Community#569; Eglantine-Community#571 is open to restore it): it measured
Hyrule Warriors falling from 42-57 fps to about 2, then hanging.
### Internal
- Merge choices, per file: both sides in `nx2_gsv.h` (`mkw_smooth` and upstream's `ran_ahead` stat)
and `StorageBufferBinding` (`layout_size_memo` and the native pointer sizing); upstream's UISETP
and global address test, which match ours in logic; our `CHANGELOG.md`.
- Tests pass (196 cases, run before the frame wait was taken out, which changed only `nx2_gsv.h`).

Testing
Games tested:
Donkey Kong Bananza 1.0.0 and update v458752 (Windows 11, RTX 5080, MSVC Release, nx2 8615d8d, EDEN_NX2_FENCE_FLUSH_US=0 for the #494 crash). A scripted 165 s run from a new game through the first mine section:
