Merge Risk: Low · up to 08429
PCM producers can be delayed while the output queue is full. This is a bounded risk during normal playback and can be accepted with owner awareness.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 08429
The new audio processing has concrete size and format limits. However, an output-device failure can now stop guest audio progress and notifications until recovery. No host-isolation escape was established, and some guest compatibility contracts remain unverified.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: Guest audio progress now depends on host output consumption. Once eight buffers are queued, Drain skips both ring advancement and data-event signaling. A backend that fails to start or stops consuming can leave this condition persistent while the stream remains engaged. Cubeb marks the stream unpaused before checking start success, so subsequent Start calls do not retry that failure. The base implementation advanced the guest ring independently of playback. Normal callbacks, disengagement with queue clearing, or close/reopen provide recovery counterexamples; a guest application hang was not demonstrated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A guest with access to these audio interfaces controls compressed packets, PCM contents, ring indices, and stream parameters processed inside the emulator. The demonstrated new propagation reaches the local output sink and guest audio synchronization; the inspected paths do not establish a host-isolation escape or a broader remote attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Sysmix limits frame and channel counts and checks recognized PCM layouts against the declared buffer size. Playback is restricted to supported 48 kHz formats, and floating-point samples and gain are sanitized. Although stream creation lacks explicit mapping validation, payload reads use the application address space and checked block-reading code, which rejects out-of-range blocks and zero-fills unmapped portions. Missing front-end validation therefore does not by itself demonstrate host-memory corruption.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Sink resources are closed on stream replacement, explicit close, and stream-session destruction under the shared stream mutex. The parent user session separately owns the drain timer. Parent closure alone therefore stops draining, but the child stream still has an explicit cleanup path; this is not evidence of an unreclaimable sink leak.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define a failed-output transition with bounded retry, reset, or silent draining so a non-consuming device cannot indefinitely suppress guest ring progress and required notifications. Preserve queue bounds and explicit stream cleanup.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "StarFox compatibility update" is vague. It names the game but not the change. The PR covers Windows timing changes (Event::WaitFor to WaitOnAddress, later moved to a separate draft PR), a StarFox-specific texture/upscale conversion, an automatic 60 FPS patch, and Ampere shader lowering fixes. The word "update" conveys no specific meaning, so a teammate scanning history cannot tell the primary change.
Resolution
Replace the title with a specific description of the main change. For example, name the primary change, such as the StarFox upscale conversion or the automatic 60 FPS patch, or the Ampere shader lowering additions. Mention the Windows timing work only if it remains in this PR.

Stop using the tracked GIT-COMMIT as the build revision.
When GIT-REFSPEC and GIT-COMMIT both exist, externals/cmake-modules/GetSCMRev.cmake:50-55 reads GIT-COMMIT and uses it as GIT_COMMIT. This head tracks GIT-COMMIT with d9558f05a2e43f6f23d030d920f70c283cf81b70, the base commit. The value reaches scm_rev.cpp.in through configure_file and then g_scm_rev, which src/core/reporter.cpp:62 reports. A build of 210a8134ffbc1589c975159dd753bdb10f1bf480 therefore reports the base commit.
A tracked GIT-COMMIT cannot hold the SHA of the commit that contains it. Generate the file during the release or local build step, with the source revision being built, or stop tracking it so GetSCMRev falls back to git rev-parse HEAD. Removing the file alone also makes the else branch overwrite GIT-REFSPEC with the branch name, so account for that in the same change.

Keep draining the guest ring when the sink queue is full.
If the sink has eight queued buffers, continue skips the guest read-index update and data-event signal for this stream. A producer waiting for free ring space can then stall until the sink queue shrinks. Keep guest-ring consumption and event signaling active when audio queuing is throttled. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Build each package in an empty staging directory.
If -PackageOnly runs again after a build or toolchain update, the package directory can contain an old DLL. The dependency scan then sees that DLL at Line 65 and does not copy the current version. The resulting package can contain incompatible runtime files. Stage each package in an empty directory before replacing the previous package. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Thanks for this, it gets Star Fox going. The Star Fox parts look good to me, most of what I'd change is about what else ended up in the PR.
Please drop from this PR
GIT-COMMIT, GIT-REFSPEC, GIT-TAG, LOCAL-BUILD.txt: CodeRabbit's first comment is right, and it's worse than a wrong SHA. GetSCMRev.cmake reads GIT-REFSPEC + GIT-COMMIT whenever both exist, so every upstream build after the merge would report itself as starfox-local at d9558f05. Removing all three files is enough; no CMake change is needed.
The 16 LICENSES/* changes: they're line endings only (git diff --ignore-cr-at-eol against nx2 is empty).
tools/windows/build-local-release.ps1 and docs/StarFox-local-release.txt: local packaging (hard-coded MSYS2 path, a release write-up). That also makes CodeRabbit's staging comment moot.
Please split into its own PR
Event::WaitFor → WaitOnAddress (210a813). Star Fox doesn't need it (it runs without it), and it changes timing for every game on Windows: its one real caller is the CoreTiming host timer thread (vsync, audio ticks, the 500 µs syncpoint poll, guest sleeps and timeouts). Rounding every timeout up to whole milliseconds means events due a few hundred µs ahead fire roughly 1-1.5 ms late, where MWAITX/UMWAIT were precise to microseconds. Looping events catch up, so average rates hold, but it deserves its own testing across games (so far only Star Fox and MKW on AMD). A high-resolution waitable timer (CREATE_WAITABLE_TIMER_HIGH_RESOLUTION) might keep sub-millisecond waits and still save the CPU.
Minor
audsmx queue-full continue (CodeRabbit's second comment): I don't think it can hang. With a real device it's backpressure that clears as the device plays, and with the null backend the queue never fills. Fine either way. One thing worth a listen, though: Switch Sports Resort uses sysmix (s16 stereo, 960 frames), so its menu-movie audio goes from silently drained to actually played with this.
Forcing tensor emulation for Star Fox roughly doubled frame time in my runs (about 63 vs 33 ms in the opening). Letting the existing upscale fallback convert formats (RGBA16F 1600x900 at cbuf0+0x90 → A2B10G10R10 1920x1080 at +0xa0) also brings the title backdrop back, much more cheaply. The two give the planet different colours, though, and I don't know which one matches the console.
What I checked
Lowering: I lowered about 3,100 dumped programs (Yoshi, Mario Tennis Fever, Star Fox) with current nx2 and with this branch. No program that lowered before changes; the branch only adds programs that were rejected (50 in Star Fox, 36 in Yoshi).
The title-ID gates mean the alignment and tensor changes can't affect other games, and hwopus 100 crashed any game that used it before.
Code review only; I haven't built or run this branch.
Implement hwopus command 100 and sysmix playback, extend Ampere lowering,
and correct Star Fox window texture alignment. Use format conversion for
its known upscale pair and add a build-guarded output-rate option.

Remove the opt-in environment setting while retaining the title, build,
instruction and bounds checks. Other games and the guest clock are unchanged.
Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex (implementation, tests and draft text)
Updated the branch to address the scope feedback. The PR now contains 13 changed files:
Removed the GIT-COMMIT, GIT-REFSPEC, GIT-TAG and LOCAL-BUILD.txt additions, restored the license files exactly, and dropped the local packaging script/release write-up. No GetSCMRev.cmake change is included.
Retained sysmix's existing queue-full backpressure behaviour. Replaced the unconditional Star Fox tensor override with a narrowly gated upscale conversion for its RGBA16F 1600x900 -> RGB10A2 1920x1080 pair. The revised path still needs visual validation and a console reference for planet colours; no performance improvement is claimed yet.
Enabled 60 FPS automatically for the tested Star Fox build. It selects the game's output interval/render delta without accelerating the guest clock, and retains title, build-ID, instruction and bounds checks. Other titles and unsupported builds are unchanged.
Local validation: Windows graphical and CLI Release builds completed; shader tests passed (20 cases, 206 assertions), and the automatic-60-FPS patch checks passed (10 cases). Earlier 60 FPS gameplay was confirmed at normal game speed. Switch Sports Resort's sysmix menu-movie audio remains untested locally.
AI disclosure: OpenAI Codex assisted with implementation, investigation, tests and this update, posted at the PR author's request.

nx2 already boots and renders Star Fox (PR Eglantine-Community#532, merged above) with its own
hwacod audio codec service and the same ULDC/TXD lowering; this PR's
competing versions were not applied.
Game: Star Fox 0400E88025B1A000, v131072, .nup, docked
Without this PR, the same base (official daily-20261105, e736dfd) crashes at boot on this machine (null jump ~8.6 s in, details in #518). With it, the game boots and plays: about 4 minutes of gameplay, no crash, and a clean exit. Frame rate settles at ~60 FPS once shaders are built (41–58 FPS in the first minute while compiling). The loader logs Star Fox output interval: 60 FPS; guest clock unchanged.
Remaining log noise, possibly unrelated: unimplemented nx2:vi2 201 and nx2:IGraphicsScaleController 1050, and one rejected native compute shader (kepler_compute.cpp: Native compute dispatch unsupported: method=0xb0). Nothing obviously wrong on screen.
…; env.txt also from /data/eglantineps5
0056 hand-merges the lower_to_maxwell.h and kepler_compute.cpp parts of #532

1920x1080 RGB10A2 upscale pair. Our TLD4 and NativeImageHandles stay.
env.txt is also read from /data/eglantineps5: the sandbox's /app0 does not show
a file added to /data/homebrew/PPSA98515 (EDEN_NX2_TC_LOG for Splatoon's OOM).
