shader: lower the Ampere right funnel shift with both words set - #705
Ocarina of Time rejects its vertex program 0x115bab3c00 at instruction 0x790 with native funnel-shift mode, and the eight draws that use it are skipped. That program is the vertex stage of the first gameplay scene.
The case already lowers two shapes: the left funnel of (high:low) with two real words, and the right shift where the high word is 255. This instruction is a right funnel with both words real, which falls through to Bits(73, 2) != 3 && !is_signed and !Bits(80, 1).
The change
The mirror of the existing left form, with the low word as the destination and the high word in Rc:
before after
funnel-shift rejections 1 0
draws skipped 26 18
frames 9,900 10,200
crash / device loss none none
What this does not fix, and my earlier mistake
The gameplay scene is still black. With this in place the next rejection is a tessellation program at stage 3:
Rejected program 0x115c0bfd00 is bound to stage 3:
header 020c0c81 00000000 00000000 00000000 ff000000
I also have to correct my own earlier comment on #589: I claimed the funnel was accepted and then that it was still rejected, because the builds I tested did not contain the change. lower_to_maxwell.h is included by src/video_core/shader_environment.cpp, so clearing shader_recompiler.dir does not rebuild it, and the build reports success with the old code. Every measurement above was taken after touch src/video_core/shader_environment.cpp and after confirming the new code is in the binary.
Honesty about the semantics
I still do not know what bits(73,2) == 1 selects. The emit is the structural mirror of the left funnel that this case already handles, the rejection goes away, nothing crashes, and the image is not corrupted, but the first scene does not render so the shifted value has never been compared against a reference. Treat it as a well measured guess, not a solved encoding.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed handling of certain right-shift operations so valid inputs with two nonzero words and shift amounts up to 32 are processed correctly. Previously, these cases could be rejected.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The Ampere lowering now emits a Maxwell right shift for an additional immediate SHF.HI right-funnel form when its operand and shift conditions are met.

Summary
Immediate right-funnel form src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
When the shift type is 1, the direction is right, .W is clear, the immediate is at most 32, and both input words are present, the lowering emits a Maxwell instruction using the low word as the destination and the high word as the other funnel input. Other forms continue to existing validation.
Djihads80/Eglantine#709 — Extends right-funnel lowering to the uniform form and includes the immediate form addressed here.
Djihads80/Eglantine#694 — Adds a test for immediate SHF.R.U64 with both input words set, matching the form lowered here.

Some guest-controlled graphics output layouts can now produce offsets beyond their declared record size. Explicit buffer limits remain, but rejection and failure containment for these layouts are unverified. The fence-wait change preserves completion-before-release ordering.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new SPIR-V offset adjustment mixes source-component position with destination-layout position. With debug assertions disabled, a 12-byte layout selecting attributes 32, 36, and 33 produces a destination offset of 8 for attribute 33; the output loop reaches that varying at element 1 and now emits offset 12 instead of 8. Its four-byte value extends beyond the declared stride. The base preserved offset 8. This sends a newly inconsistent guest-derived output contract to the driver, leaving rejection and failure containment dependent on driver behavior. Explicit bound buffer sizes remain unchanged; host-memory escape or device failure is not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated entry path requires control of an emulated guest's graphics state and an enabled, supported Vulkan transform-feedback stage. The directly exposed boundary is generated shader code entering that emulator's graphics driver. The inspected evidence does not establish cross-process, cross-tenant, or host-memory access.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A guest can supply split-component layouts that expose the newly inconsistent offset/stride contract when debug assertions are disabled. Driver rejection or erroneous GPU output is a plausible consequence, but neither device loss nor a memory-safety vulnerability has been verified. The canonical security input contains no retained findings and reports incomplete coverage.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The expanded scratch-register preparation validates reserved boundaries and operand ranges before indexing its tracking arrays. Borrowed quartets are marked occupied and paired with restoration copies. Lowering failures clear generated instruction output, and the production caller rejects an unsuccessful result rather than consuming a partial program.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Deferred submission remains within the scheduler owner instead of transferring queue authority into the generic fence manager. The new hook addresses progress before a blocking wait without changing the release thread's completion, callback, and delayed-destruction sequence.

Provide a subgroup-size bound for the OpenGL fallback.
When EDEN_NX2_FRAGMENT_SHUFFLE_FALLBACK is enabled with OpenGL SPIR-V, ShuffleAbsolute uses the profile’s zero max_subgroup_size and returns zero. In-range dynamic-index fragment shuffles can render incorrectly. Provide a valid OpenGL subgroup-size bound before selecting this fallback.

Preserve the combine predicate in ISETP.EX lowering.
Bits 87–90 encode the combine-predicate input, not a destination. For ordering comparisons, the second isetp uses that input instead of the intermediate comparison result. EQ and NE ignore it. These paths can produce incorrect predicate results, including for !PT.
Implement the combine operation, or reject non-PT inputs until it is supported.

Emit SHF.R for the right funnel shift.
The emitted opcode is SHR, so it does not read the high word. The high register index instead sets SHR flags. For example, R16 sets xmode and causes the Maxwell translator to reject the shader.
Restrict this lowering to the low-result form. The fallback rejects the high-result form.

Synchronize deferred submission with the back thread.
When a split-thread semaphore acquire calls ReleaseFences(), DrainBack() does not stop the idle hook. If the new fence is skipped or stubbed, SubmitDeferredWork() can race the idle hook on flush_pending and submit scheduler state concurrently. This can corrupt command buffers or crash.
Keep scheduler submission synchronized with the back thread. Preserve direct submission on the back thread and when the split is inactive.
