shader: lower the Ampere uniform right shift with both words set - #709
The 0x899 case already lowers 0x0800163f and 0x08011600|high, which are the same shift with the other word reading URZ. With both words real the instruction is a funnel, so it lowers like the left funnel in the non-uniform case:
So this is one of a chain rather than a fix that renders anything by itself. I am sending it because the encoding reading is confident: the pattern differs from the accepted ones only in the word that becomes Rc, and the rejection disappears without crashing.
A note on measurement, because I got this wrong earlier today
lower_to_maxwell.h is included by src/video_core/shader_environment.cpp, so clearing shader_recompiler.dir does not rebuild it and the build succeeds with the old code. Every number here was taken after touch src/video_core/shader_environment.cpp and after deleting the previous executable, and the zero above is the log of that build, not of a stale one.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved shader compatibility for subgroup operations and expanded support for additional shader instructions and texture-array gathers.
Corrected transform-feedback output offsets for varyings that begin partway through a vector.
Improved handling of shader demotion cases to preserve correct execution.
Fixed asynchronous waits so pending graphics work is submitted before the wait completes.
Configuration
Added an option to disable transform-feedback output.
Added a configurable fallback for fragment-shader shuffle operations.
Two guards in the Ampere to Maxwell path rejected shapes that appear in
Ocarina of Time's in-game geometry, and each rejection discards the program so
the draw is skipped for the rest of the session.
ISETP: the extended path refused any instruction whose bits 87-90 were not all
ones, which is the predicate/negate pair for the final compare. The single
compare path in the same file copies that pair straight to Maxwell bits 39 and
42, which are pred and neg_pred, so the layout is known and the extended path
only lacked somewhere to put it. It now feeds the pair into the second compare
instead of dropping it.
TLD4: the gather path only accepted dimension 1, which is 2D, and refused 5,
which is 2D array. Array gathers now place the layer in R252 and use Maxwell's
dimension code 3. Array with offsets is still refused.
Measured on 0400486024DEC000, RX 5700, amdvlk, Windows: before, past the intro
the 3D scene went black with only dialogue text visible, with 71 of 92 graphics
rejections being the ISETP shape. After, the scene renders in game at 31 FPS
with correct textures, a client area capture of 1.0 to 2.5 MB where a black
scene gives about 20 KB, and no rejection of either kind in the measured run.
…a TFB kill switch
The output variable for a varying that starts inside a vector is decorated with
Component, but it received the Offset of the start of that vector, so the guest
read back the wrong bytes and the GPU fence for the frame never advanced
(Ocarina of Time freezes at present 20316 with 'Unaligned TFB 46/89/210').
EDEN_NX2_NO_TFB disables transform feedback for A/B: with it the same run reaches
36000 frames instead of freezing at 20316, which is how the cause was isolated.
Ocarina of Time rejects the vertex program 0x115bab3c00 at instruction 0x790
with 'native funnel-shift mode':
[op 819 0e0e7819 00000015 00001211 020fe200]
73-74=1 75=0 76=1 80=0 shift=21 low=14 high=17
The case already covers the left funnel with two words and the right shift with
a zero high word. The gap is a right funnel with both words real, which is the
mirror of the left form:
emit(base(0x3828...) | low << 8 | high << 39 | shift << 20)
Measured on RX 5700, Windows, AMD proprietary 2.0.353, clean cache: the
rejection disappears, no crash and no device loss across 10,000 frames, and the
draws bound to that program stop being skipped (26 skipped to 18).
What comes next is a tessellation program rejected at stage 3, so this does not
make the gameplay scene render by itself.
Ocarina of Time's tessellation programs (stage 3) reject at 0x250, 0x260 and
0x2d0 with 'native uniform shift mode':
[op 899 06087899 00000018 08001207 004fe400]
words[2] = 0x08001200 | high, low != 63, shift 24
The case accepts 0x0800163f and 0x08011600|high, which are the same shift with
the other word reading URZ. With both words real the instruction is a funnel, so
it lowers like the left funnel in the non-uniform case: destination the low
word, high word in Rc.
Measured, RX 5700, Windows, AMD proprietary 2.0.353, 11,400 frames: the
rejection is gone, no crash, no device loss. The same programs then reject on
other instructions that are not lowered yet (uniform bit reverse, register
shift, uniform select), so the scene still does not render.
The pull request changes SPIR-V shuffle and transform-feedback handling, Ampere instruction lowering, demote-branch combination, and fence-wait submission of deferred work.
Changes: SPIR-V Output Handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fragment shuffle fallback src/shader_recompiler/backend/spirv/emit_spirv_warp.cpp
A fragment-shader environment variable can select the existing broadcast-based fallback for absolute and relative shuffles.
Generic output offsets now account for skipped components. When EDEN_NX2_NO_TFB is set, varying construction returns an empty array and a count of zero.
The demote combination pass now returns without combining branches if a demote block has instructions before its demote operation.
Fence Wait Submission
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Submit deferred work before waiting src/video_core/fence_manager.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_fence_manager.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_fence_manager.cpp
WaitPendingFences calls a backend hook before blocking. The Vulkan override flushes deferred scheduler work.
Djihads80/Eglantine#158 — This issue concerns ISBERD and ISBEWR scratch-register handling. The changes add ISBEWR to the register-pressure operand checks.
Djihads80/Eglantine#321 — The new EDEN_NX2_NO_TFB setting bypasses transform-feedback layout construction, which may help diagnose the reported assertion; the change does not establish a fix for the reported texture crash.
Possibly related PRs
Djihads80/Eglantine#685 — Both PRs change fragment shuffle fallback, transform-feedback offsets, register-pressure checks, and 2D-array gather lowering.
Djihads80/Eglantine#705 — PR #705 adds two-word right-funnel lowering; this PR extends that lowering to the uniform form.
Djihads80/Eglantine#694 — Both PRs submit deferred Vulkan work before a forced asynchronous fence wait.
The new right-shift lowering emits the wrong instruction. Affected shaders can still fail to translate or compute wrong values. The extended-comparison and transform-feedback changes can also produce wrong results, and the fence-wait change can crash the Vulkan renderer when it races with the back thread. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to bb2c2
The changes alter execution ordering and diagnostic behavior without a demonstrated increase in privileges or data access. Incomplete failure-path and concurrency coverage leaves limited uncertainty.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The concrete exposure remains guest-controlled graphics work translated and submitted through the existing host rendering process and graphics device. The compared changes do not demonstrate additional credentials, service authority or enlarged destination-buffer bindings. Broader host compromise is not established by the available evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new fence hook submits work but does not itself complete fences or release resources. Normal cleanup remains completion-driven. Inspected puller paths either defer work to the back thread or drain it before accessing back-owned state; this is counterevidence to a newly introduced concurrent scheduler caller, but not proof of arbitrary public-call thread safety.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Deferred submission reuses the existing queue-submission error path, which reports device loss and checks unsuccessful Vulkan results. That implementation is unchanged by this PR; the inspected path does not establish recoverable rollback or fence cleanup after submission failure, so it is a coverage limitation rather than a demonstrated new failure-containment defect.

Use the varying’s buffer offset directly.
When debug assertions are disabled, split varyings can reach this emitter. xfb_varying->offset already contains the buffer-relative offset. Adding the component index can produce an invalid layout or capture data at the wrong offset.

Include operand widths in the shadow scan.
requires_shadow checks only base registers, so it can skip the new boundary check. For example, LDSM with a two-register destination at R215 can write R216 without shadowing when the uniform bank is active. R216 mirrors UR0, so a later uniform read can use the overwritten value.
Use the shadow table's operand widths when deciding whether to call PrepareRegisterPressure.

Emit a right funnel shift for two-word USHF.R.U32.
0x3828 emits SHR_imm, not a funnel shift. It interprets high_reg as mode flags and does not read the high word. For example, UR0 maps to R216 and sets XMODE, which rejects the shader. Other registers can produce an incorrect result. At shift 32, the result must be the high word.

Preserve the intermediate result in extended comparisons.
Bits 87–90 encode the combining predicate, not a second destination. For an ordering comparison, tail_pred replaces the intermediate result with that predicate. If the high words are equal, the low comparison is false, and the combining predicate is true, the lowering can produce true instead of false.

Keep deferred submission on the scheduler’s owning thread.
When a semaphore acquire waits on the split front thread, DrainBack() does not exclude the back thread’s idle hook. Both threads can call FlushDeferred() concurrently, racing on flush_pending and scheduler recording state. This can corrupt submissions or crash. Coordinate the submission with the back thread while preserving the direct flush when the back thread itself must wait.

Closing this: the current base already lowers this encoding, and does it better. case 0x899 handles words[2] == (0x08001200 | high) by materialising the shift and calling right_shift_u64_low, which is a real 64 bit shift, where this PR emitted a single SHF and hoped the halves lined up.
