A new ProxyRack device never made it onto the account. ProxyRack only knows a new UUID about five minutes after its client first connects. Until then /device/add answers "Device not found ... Please try again in 5 minutes". The deploy made its one attempt at that moment, reported the device as not added, and never tried again, so every new device earned for nobody.

This mirrors GeiserX/CashPilot#664 in Desktop:

  • RegisterDevice now spots that answer and returns RegisterPending, separate from added and failed.
  • The deploy stores a pending registration in a new pending_device_links table, so a restart keeps it. A pass every 3 minutes retries it 6 minutes after the deploy, then doubles the wait each time up to 4 hours.
  • After a day it stops, and a notification names the device, the manual step and its link. A redeploy starts a new day of retries.
  • A device that no longer runs here (redeployed with another id, or removed) is dropped without asking the provider.
  • The deploy output says the app is still trying to add the device, in place of the manual step.

Also carries #273's commit (the single-flight collect test no longer races a 2 ms sleep on slow runners), so it ships with this change and does not cut a release of its own.

Tests: a ProxyRack case for the "try again" answer, plus app tests for storing, a successful retry, backoff up to the cap, giving up with the notification, dropping a device that is gone, a new window after a redeploy, and the loop itself. With the "try again" branch or the store call removed, the collector test and the storing/redeploy tests fail. go test -race ./... and the frontend checks pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • ProxyRack device registration now retries automatically when the provider asks you to try again later. Attempts are spaced out, continue across app restarts, and stop after one day.
    • Deployment details show when a device is still being added. If retries stop without success, the app provides a warning and instructions for adding the device manually.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Failed device registrations are no longer shown as successfully added.

The test raced 8 goroutines against a 2 ms sleep. On a slow macOS race
runner a call could start after the first run had finished, a legitimate
second run, and the test failed with 6 collects instead of 3. The fake
collector now parks on a gate that the test closes only after the other
7 calls have returned, so exactly one run is open while they try.
…cepts it, instead of dropping it

ProxyRack answers /device/add with "Device not found ... try again in 5
minutes" until a new UUID's client has been connected for about five
minutes. The deploy made one attempt at that moment and never tried again,
so every new device stayed off the account.

RegisterDevice now tells that answer apart (RegisterPending). The deploy
stores it in pending_device_links, and a pass every 3 minutes retries it:
6 minutes after the deploy, then doubling up to 4 hours. After a day it
stops and a notification tells the user to add the device by hand. A
device that no longer runs here is dropped without asking the provider.
Mirrors web #664.

Walkthrough

The app now recognizes pending ProxyRack device registrations, stores retry state, and retries eligible links with increasing delays. Deployment state and details show ongoing retries or a give-up notification. The single-flight collection test now uses a gate to control overlap.

Changes: Device-link registration retries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registration outcomes and persisted retry state
internal/collectors/devices.go, internal/collectors/devices_test.go, internal/store/pending_device_links.go, internal/store/pending_device_links_test.go, internal/store/store.go
Registration returns failed, added, or pending outcomes. SQLite persists pending device links, their retry schedule, attempt count, and give-up state. Tests cover registration outcomes and persistence behavior.
App retry lifecycle and deployment state
app.go, app_device_links.go, device_link_app_test.go, device_link_retry_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
The app saves pending registrations, retries due links with exponential delays capped at four hours, and stops retrying after 24 hours. It removes stale entries, updates added-device state, exposes active retries, and adds notifications for deployed links that give up.
Retry status in deployment details
frontend/src/wails.d.ts, frontend/src/render/details.ts, frontend/src/main.ts, frontend/scripts/details_check.mjs
Deployment views pass retrying device IDs to deviceLinkText. A matching ID displays the retry message instead of manual-link steps. Checks cover matching and nonmatching IDs.

Single-flight test synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate-controlled collection test
app_test.go
The fake collector now blocks on a gate. TestCollectAllSingleFlight holds the winning run while it waits for the other callers to return.

Pending ProxyRack registrations can silently lose retries while their containers remain running. Deadline handling and device guidance also need correction. Resolve the retry-loss paths before merging; the remaining issues can leave users with delayed or misleading recovery instructions.

Explanation

The title names the main change: a new ProxyRack device keeps being added (retried) until the account accepts it, instead of being dropped. The changeset adds a RegisterPending outcome, a pending_device_links table, a retry loop with backoff, and a give-up notification. The title also uses the conventional fix(devices) prefix and is one sentence. Its length (101 characters) is long but still readable.

Test an earlier retry deadline.

The live-row test only supplies a later deadline. A regression that always keeps the stored deadline would pass. Add a save with an earlier deadline and assert that NextAt changes while Attempts and FirstAt remain unchanged.

Suggested test

Extend the live-row test around SavePendingDeviceLink to cover an earlier retry
deadline as well as a later one. Set the stored NextAt later than the deadline
of a subsequent save, then verify the save updates NextAt while preserving

a pending row only when its DeviceID matches the deployed device ID for that
slug. Prevent stale rows from overwriting the current device’s retry status.
- Around line 37-41: Update the UUID lookup used by the retry and removal checks
to track the UUID deployed in the running container separately from saved
credentials. Reuse that deployed UUID in both checks so saving a different UUID
or a failed redeploy does not prevent contacting ProxyRack or reporting a
timeout for the still-running registration.
- Around line 75-79: Update the retry-completion path around RegisterAdded and
setAddedDevice so a late retry cannot replace the device status established by a
newer deployment. Synchronize retry completion with deployment ownership and
update addedDevices only when the completing retry still belongs to the current
deployment; preserve the existing cleanup and event behavior.
- Around line 82-84: Update the give-up branch in the device-link retry flow to
check the result of UpdatePendingDeviceLink instead of discarding it; preserve
the terminal update behavior and surface the manual-recovery warning when that
update fails.
- Around line 61-63: Update deployedDeviceID and its caller so deployment or
credential read failures are distinguishable from a confirmed absent or changed
device. Propagate read errors and skip DeletePendingDeviceLink unless the device
is successfully confirmed absent or changed, preserving the pending registration
for retry.
- Around line 163-171: Update the device-link reconciliation flow that builds
the warning Notification from row so it checks confirmed linked status before
reporting a given-up device. When the device is confirmed linked manually, clear
or resolve the corresponding stored row so the warning no longer appears;
preserve the warning for devices that remain unlinked.
- Around line 65-67: Update the pending-registration retry flow around the
row.GaveUp and row.NextAt checks to mark rows past the one-day deadline as given
up before evaluating NextAt or contacting the provider. Preserve the existing
retry schedule for unexpired rows.

Review comments at @app.go:
- Line 1895: Update the alert aggregation around device-link notifications to
suppress the generic unlinked warning for UUIDs that have a matching retry
record, while retaining the give-up warning from deviceLinkGaveUpNotifications.
Use the existing retry-state and notification symbols to match UUIDs, and
preserve generic warnings for UUIDs without a matching retry record.

Review comments at @device_link_retry_test.go:
- Around line 158-161: Separate credential updates from deployment replacement
in the retry test using app.store.SaveCredentials: exercise a real device
replacement in the case that expects dev-1 to be removed, and add a
credential-only edit case that verifies a live pending registration for the
still-running device retains its retry.

…, and one notice per device

- A store read that fails no longer deletes a pending registration.
- Only a service that is no longer deployed drops its row. Credentials saved
without a redeploy leave the old device running, so its row stays; the
deploy is what drops another device's row.
- A retry that succeeds during a redeploy does not mark the new device added.
- The deploy output only says "still trying" for the device that runs.
- The generic "not on your account" warning skips a device with a stored
registration, and the give-up notice shows only while the provider's last
check says the device is not on the account, so adding it by hand clears it.
