feat(ui): a home screen that says in one line whether every app is running, and what to fix first - #108
Replaces #105 with the same change as one commit on current main, so no commit in this PR carries the old test fixture key the secret scanner flagged.
The home screen was a grid of cards, and you had to read all of them to find out whether anything had stopped. When something had, nothing said what to do about it, and the server's state was easy to miss.
The home screen is now a status board. One line answers "is everything running?", one line covers the server, and below that comes one row per app, with an Open button on any app that stopped. When more than one thing is wrong, a numbered list says what to fix and in what order. Onboarding is three steps. Each special access gets a disclosure before Android opens its settings, and pairing ends with a real connection test that says whether the key was refused, the server was unreachable or the address needs https. Settings is grouped and masks the API key. The no-access state, the no-app state, the supported apps list with Referral labels and a demo mode each get their own screen. The colours are Classic night and Light from the web dashboard.

How it's tested. Every word and colour the screens show comes from plain functions in ui/board/Board.kt, and BoardTest covers them. There are 61 screen goldens: every screen in four situations, dark and light. AccessibilityTest runs on every screen and checks for 48 dp targets, a name on everything tappable, a heading on each screen, no text out of reach at font scale 1.3, and TalkBack order on the home screen. PaletteContrastTest holds each text colour to WCAG AA. Each of these checks has been seen to fail on purpose.
Things to push back on:
Setup no longer blocks on the two accesses. Continue without them lands on the calm no-access screen, and Play expects users to be able to decline.
The public IP lookup to api.ipify.org is gone, so the app now only talks to your own server.
Light's green and amber are one step darker than in the design, because on tinted fills they fell to 4.2:1.
The copy now lives in Kotlin, not strings.xml. Nothing is translated yet.
…unning
The dashboard was a grid of cards that left the user to work out what was
wrong. The home screen now leads with one verdict ("2 of 6 apps stopped"),
one line about the server, the apps as quiet rows with an Open button on the
stopped ones, and an ordered list when more than one thing needs fixing.
- Onboarding is three steps, with a disclosure before each special access,
and a connection test that sends one real report and says whether the key
was refused, the server was unreachable or the address needs https.
- Settings is grouped, shows the API key masked, and states every access.
- No supported app, no access at all, the supported apps with Referral
labels, and demo mode with a sample-data banner each have their own screen.
- Classic night and Light palettes from the web dashboard replace Material
You; every text pair clears WCAG AA, checked by a test.
- The public IP lookup to api.ipify.org is gone, so the app talks only to
the user's own server.
Copy and colour decisions live in ui/board/Board.kt as plain functions with
unit tests. Every screen has a golden in the four situations, dark and
light, and passes an accessibility pass (48 dp targets, names, headings,
reachable text at font scale 1.3, TalkBack order on the home screen).
Also: the docs follow the new screens, pull to refresh stays on the home
screen, and the CI step verifies icon and screen goldens.
The pull request replaces the dashboard and setup screens with a status board, onboarding, and settings flow. It adds classified connection-test outcomes, demo mode, and screen-level golden, accessibility, and palette contrast tests. Documentation and CI labels are updated to reflect these changes.

Summary
Board state and connection outcomes app/src/main/java/com/cashpilot/android/service/Heartbeat.kt, app/src/main/java/com/cashpilot/android/model/Settings.kt, app/src/main/java/com/cashpilot/android/ui/MainViewModel.kt, app/src/main/java/com/cashpilot/android/ui/board/Board.kt, app/src/test/java/com/cashpilot/android/board/BoardTest.kt
Heartbeat returns classified outcomes, and MainViewModel uses them for connection testing. Board derives app, server, task, earnings, and pairing presentation. API-key changes clear the worker key only when the trimmed key changes. Public-IP lookup state and fetching are removed.
MainActivity now renders BoardApp. BoardApp routes onboarding, disclosures, settings, app details, supported-app lists, and home screens. The UI adds demo mode and fixed dark and light palettes. The former dashboard, setup, settings, and earnings-card composables are removed.
Screen fixtures and validation app/src/test/java/com/cashpilot/android/board/*, app/src/test/java/com/cashpilot/android/IconGoldenTest.kt, app/src/test/java/com/cashpilot/android/StandaloneSetupTest.kt, app/build.gradle.kts, codecov.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Shared situations and screen definitions drive golden screenshots, accessibility checks, and palette contrast tests. Board tests cover presentation and pairing. Icon goldens are adjusted, and the former standalone setup tests are removed. CI and coverage configuration include the board UI and screen goldens.
Documentation and resources README.md, CLAUDE.md, PUBLISHING.md, docs/*, fastlane/metadata/android/en-US/full_description.txt, app/src/main/res/*
Documentation describes the new screens, setup, connection testing, and privacy wording. Obsolete strings and drawable resources are removed.
GeiserX/CashPilot-android#100: Its screenshot test references the dashboard, setup, and settings screens removed by this PR.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 108e3
Resolve credential handling and connection-test correctness before merging. Changing servers can expose the old server’s worker key, and connection results can describe unsaved or unverified details. Users denying both special accesses also lose access to cached earnings totals.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a home screen that shows in one line whether every app is running and which fix comes first. The changeset replaces the dashboard card grid with a status board (Board.kt, BoardApp.kt, HomeScreens.kt) that gives an overall verdict and an ordered task list. The title is specific and matches the primary change. It is long (97 characters) but still clear. The title does not mention the other large parts of the change, such as the new theme, onboarding, pairing, and removal of the public IP lookup. That is expected for a title.

… guessing stop times
- A 2xx that is not CashPilot's {"status":"ok"} (a login page, a proxy) is
now "answered, but not as CashPilot", never "Connected".
- A new API key drops the phone's own key, so the test proves the key typed.
- The test runs off the main thread; an edit while it runs discards its answer;
Finish saves the fields as typed.
- Stopped apps no longer claim a stop time: Android gives the last time an app
was opened. Tasks list them by name; rows say "last opened".
- Every installed app switched off reads "No apps watched".
- Settings' "All 10 supported apps" shows all ten, installed ones with Open.
- The notification disclosure says what is sent: whether each app has its
notification up and whether it runs.
- The board clock ticks every 30 s; a restored detail screen waits for the
first detection; a typed field is never overwritten by a late read.
