fix(mysterium): keep the running node when Docker refuses its replacement - #675
Moving a Mysterium node behind the fence on a real box exposed three problems:
A redeploy removed the running node before it knew the new one could start. One UDP port held by another program on the host failed the new container, and the node was gone.
The guard could start a fence-gated container that a failed deploy had left behind, including one with no network, and still log "fence confirmed" for it.
The default UDP range, 56000:56029, sits inside Linux's ephemeral port range (32768-60999). Any program on the host can briefly hold a port there, and Docker publishes the range 1:1, so one taken port fails the whole start. On the host network the node just skipped a busy port; on the fenced bridge it can't.
Fix
The old node waits until its replacement runs. The deploy stops the old container and renames it aside (-replaced) instead of removing it. If the new container can't be created, can't be started, or comes up with no address on the fenced network, the worker:
removes the half-made container;
gives the old one its name back and starts it again if it was running;
puts the identity and stop records back exactly as they were, including a mismatch hold kept only in memory.
The refusal says what Docker said and what was put back. The old container is removed only after the new one is running.
The guard starts only a whole node. In on and operator mode, a fence-gated container is held, not started, when:
its last deploy failed and left it behind (a new failed-deploy mark that a successful deploy clears, even when the record file can't be written);
it isn't attached to the fenced network;
its WebUI or UDP ports aren't published.
After a start, the guard checks that the container has an address on its network. If it doesn't, the guard stops it, marks it failed and doesn't start it again. The start is logged only once the container is on its network.
The default range moves to 23000:23029, below the ephemeral range and below the Kubernetes NodePort range. A node keeps the range it has on record. When Docker refuses a taken UDP port inside 32768-60999, the 409 explains why and says to set UDP_PORTS below 32768 and change the router forward to match. The Mysterium guide, docs/isolation.md and UPGRADING.md say the same.
Testing
New tests cover the roll-back on a refused create and on a refused start, the identity record and memory hold left as they were, a leftover that can't be removed, the guard's new holds, the post-start address check, the mark that can't be written, the default range and the ephemeral-port hint. Each test was run against a mutant of the code it guards and failed there.
Full suite passes.
Checked against a real worker stack (worker, socket proxy, Mysterium 1.39.9 on the fenced bridge):
A redeploy onto a UDP range with one port held by a host program returned 409 naming the port, with the ephemeral explanation. The same container came back running with the same node identity, no leftover, and the identity record unchanged.
A stopped node detached from the fenced network stayed stopped through two guard passes. Reconnected, it was started and logged as on its network.
A node marked failed stayed stopped after a worker restart. A redeploy cleared the mark and the node kept running, both with a writable marker and with one the worker could not write.

New Features
Failed deployments now roll back to the previous working container, and incomplete containers are prevented from starting.
Updates
The default Mysterium UDP port range is now 23000–23029. Update router forwarding to match; existing nodes retain their configured range until it is changed.
Upgrade guidance explains port conflicts, the requirement to keep the range below 32768, and the need for manual forwarding when using UPnP.
…ment
A deploy removed the running container before it knew the new one could
start, so one host port another program held cost the node. The old one is
now stopped and moved aside, and put back and started again, with its
identity and stop records as they were, when the new one cannot be created
or started or comes up with no network.
The guard no longer starts a fence-gated container a failed deploy left, or
one not attached to its network with its ports published, and stops and
marks one that comes up with no address; it logs the start only once the
container is on its network.
A deploy that works lifts the failed mark even when the record cannot be
written, so the guard never keeps stopping the node its owner just
redeployed.
The default UDP range moves to 23000:23029, below Linux's ephemeral range
(32768-60999), where any host program can take a port and fail the whole
publish. A range on record is kept; the refusal says when a taken port was
ephemeral and what to do.

The default UDP range and forwarding examples change to 23000:23029. Documentation describes the Linux ephemeral range, occupied-port startup failures, and the need to update UDP_PORTS and router forwarding when migrating an existing node. Tests update the corresponding expected ranges.
Replacement and rollback app/orchestrator.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
Deployment moves the prior container aside and tracks its running state, identity record, and mismatch hold. On replacement failure, rollback removes the new container and attempts to restore the prior state. Failed deployments are recorded, and errors for occupied UDP ports in the ephemeral range receive a specific hint.
Fence and network validation app/orchestrator.py, app/lan_fence.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
Gated specifications check declared UI and UDP port bindings. The guard holds failed deployments and verifies that started containers are running and have an address on the expected network.
GeiserX/CashPilot#665: Adds the fence-gated model and guard contract extended by this change.
GeiserX/CashPilot#498: Adds the UDP_PORTS setting and recorded-range redeploy behavior whose default and expectations change here.
GeiserX/CashPilot#574: Defines the LAN fence modes and network contract used by the updated deployment and guard checks.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b56fd
Resolve the deployment and guard failures before merging: the documented UDP migration can retain the old ports, failed replacements can leave nodes stopped or restart backups sharing an identity, and rollback can restart a node without its isolation fence.

The guard cleared its unfenced report on any error in the pass, so a second
node that failed to start on every pass hid the Fleet move of the one still
on the host network. Only a scan that did not finish clears it now.

container.reload() so inspection failures are retryable instead of permanently
failing the deploy. Keep the unverified node stopped, and ensure a later guard

preserve safeguards that prevent treating an unverified node as healthy.
Review comments at @app/orchestrator.py:
- Around line 1032-1037: In the ContainerNetworkError handler, clear the
failed-deploy marker for the confirmed-created replacement before re-raising, so
the guard can start it after the fence recovers. Apply this only when the
replacement exists, alongside the existing _remove_container cleanup.
- Around line 1635-1640: Update the UDP validation in the node pre-start guard
so it checks whether the actual UDP bindings cover the configured
udp_port_range, rather than accepting any UDP binding. Use the range and binding
data available in this block to verify the session ports are published,
preserving the existing error return when validation fails.
- Around line 1060-1062: Update the aside-container cleanup around
`client.containers.get(aside)` to verify the container belongs to the service
being redeployed before calling `_remove_container`. Use the existing ownership
metadata; if the aside container belongs to another service, reject the
collision without stopping or removing that container.
- Around line 1327-1329: Enforce the FAILED_MARKER hold across every

- Around line 1091-1094: Track the identity of the container created by this
deployment and use that identity during rollback; do not look up the name and
remove whichever container currently occupies it. Update the rollback flow
around _remove_container to remove only the tracked deployment-created
container, preserving the replacement if another deployment acquired the name.
- Around line 1058-1064: Update the deployment flow around `_remove_container`
and `old.rename(aside)` so that if removing the leftover container fails after
the current container has been stopped, the current container’s prior running
state is restored before the error is returned. Preserve the existing error
propagation and use the deployment’s existing state-tracking and restart
mechanisms.
- Around line 1067-1070: Update the APIError handling around the container
rename so a failed rename preserves the old container and aborts the deployment
through the existing failure or rollback path. Remove the fallback call to
_remove_container and avoid returning None as though no old container existed;
ensure the deployment reports failure without discarding the previous state.
- Around line 1043-1046: Update the deployment finalization flow around
_remove_container so a backup-removal failure does not prevent saving the
replacement as the active deployment. Ensure the retained backup is excluded
from restart or recovery, and clear or update the failed marker so the guard
cannot stop the running replacement; preserve the existing cleanup behavior when
removal succeeds.
- Around line 1147-1148: Update the UDP conflict advice in the helper containing
this message to derive the setting name and default range from service catalog
metadata, rather than assuming every service uses UDP_PORTS. When the catalog
has no such metadata, provide generic guidance; avoid adding service-specific
logic in app/.
- Around line 1111-1113: Update the rollback path around replaced.start() to
keep the previous node stopped until its fence and startability are confirmed,
including after replacement startup or readback failure. Reuse the established
fence and startability checks, and preserve the legacy exemption for
host-network nodes.
- Around line 925-930: Update the replacement flow around old.stop() so it
confirms the old container is stopped before calling _move_aside or starting its
replacement. If stopping raises APIError and the old container is still running,
abort the replacement; proceed only once its stopped state is confirmed.
- Around line 1064-1066: Update the guard’s start eligibility check for
containers returned by the rename-and-return flow so a backup moved aside is
never started, including if backup removal fails or the worker stops after the
rename. Preserve normal guard starts for eligible replacement containers.
- Around line 1039-1040: Reformat the `_roll_back` call in the rollback flow so
its arguments fit Ruff’s configured formatting and line-length rules, preserving
the existing arguments and behavior.
Review comments at @services/bandwidth/mysterium.yml:
- Line 60: Update the bandwidth port-range configuration around the default
value so an explicit submission of 23000:23029 is applied to existing nodes,
while an untouched default on redeploy preserves the previously recorded range.
Use the system’s existing mechanism for distinguishing explicit edits from
defaults; establish how it identifies that change before modifying migration
behavior, and retain the current redeploy behavior for untouched settings.

A Docker error while moving the old container aside left it stopped with
no roll-back; it now runs again as it was. A replaced container that
cannot be removed no longer fails a deploy that runs or leaves the failed
mark set, the guard never starts a container moved aside, and a roll-back
after the old one had to be removed says so.
…lace
The old container is no longer removed when Docker refuses to rename it,
or replaced while a failed stop left it running, or moved aside onto a
name another service holds. A roll-back removes only the container its
own deploy made, and starts a fence-gated node again only behind a
complete fence. A failed-deploy mark is cleared when the fence defers the
new node, never set by a start the guard could not read back, and holds
Start, Restart and the network reattach too. The guard checks the node
publishes its whole configured UDP range, and the ephemeral-port advice
names the setting from the service's catalog entry.
The docs no longer tell owners to type the default range to move a node:
a value equal to the default reads as an untouched field.
…ker refusal
A read timeout or dropped connection while stopping or moving the old
container skipped the roll-back, which caught only Docker's own errors,
and left the node stopped. Any error now restores it; a rename that timed
out after it happened is undone first.
