Description

Add opt-in Orbbec EGO stereo camera support through Isaac Capture's
existing DeviceIO, tracker, and MCAP interfaces.

The integration supports stereo MJPEG/H.264/H.265 video, IMU, optional
audio, calibration, and device diagnostics. It provides live trackers,
sidecar or embedded-media recording, structured replay, SDK-free MCAP
merge and media export tools, offline timestamp association and
synchronization analysis, and optional camera_viz preview.

The implementation includes:

  • Vendor-specific schemas, types, tracker registration, canonical MCAP
topics, and plugin registration, using names such as
    orbbec_ego_camera.fbs, OrbbecEgoFrameMetadata, and orbbec_ego_camera.
  • An installer that downloads the pinned EGO-specific OrbbecSDK
    v2.10.6-EGO-20261019 build (d49af169), verifies its SHA-256,
installs dependencies and USB 2bc5:1201 udev rules, and builds the
native plugin tools. Both setup guides identify the required SDK
    release and download location.
  • Ctrl-C handling that preserves the recording pipeline during shutdown
so MCAP finalization and verification can complete.
  • Per-eye H.264/H.265 decoder recovery after compressed-frame gaps,
waiting for codec parameters and a random-access frame before resuming.
  • Offline auditing that reports unindexed trailing video bytes separately
while retaining errors for truncated indexed media. The documentation
specifies the required video sidecar and Audio.wav layout.
  • Validation of raw SDK calibration transfers before parsing, with
camera/IMU calibration handling and regression coverage.
  • A hardware-free EGO workflow using ubuntu-22.04 and the pinned SDK
installer, replacing the custom self-hosted runner requirement.
Camera_viz tests remain covered by the existing VIZ-enabled workflow.
  • Updated installation, recording, replay, and troubleshooting guides.
The EGO device page is located under docs/source/device/cameras/.

The camera plugin remains disabled by default
(BUILD_PLUGIN_EGO_CAMERA=OFF). SDK-free media tools can be enabled
independently with BUILD_EGO_MEDIA_TOOLS.

Compatibility: configurations and recordings from earlier revisions of
this PR use the former Ego* APIs, ego_* MCAP topics, and ego_camera
plugin registration. They require corresponding updates to the
vendor-specific names. These EGO interfaces are new to this PR.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

Local validation was performed on Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS x86_64 with
Python 3.11.15, GNU C++ 13.3.0, CMake 3.31.10, and Release builds.
The camera build used the pinned EGO-specific SDK.

The native configuration enabled BUILD_PLUGIN_EGO_CAMERA,
BUILD_PYTHON_BINDINGS, BUILD_EXAMPLES, BUILD_TESTING, and
EGO_ENABLE_PREVIEW, with BUILD_VIZ=OFF. The independent SDK-free
configuration enabled BUILD_EGO_MEDIA_TOOLS with the camera plugin
and Python bindings disabled.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds an EGO camera plugin with stereo video capture, optional IMU and audio, structured metadata, and MCAP recording, replay, export, and merge tools. It adds tracker and schema APIs, plus Python tools for recording configuration, clock calibration, and synchronization audits. The camera visualization example gains EGO preview, H.264/HEVC decoding, and side-by-side stereo display. Plugin startup also gains a configurable shutdown timeout.

The new EGO plugin can corrupt memory when the camera returns malformed calibration data. Add bounds checks before merging. Two smaller README fixes are also needed: correct the broken anchors, and change the stated validation duration to 15 minutes.

✅ Preview deployed: https://NVIDIA.github.io/IsaacCapture/preview/pr-1252/

Port the EGO plugin, live/replay trackers, structured schemas, MCAP media
and timing tools, Python helpers, and stereo preview from
e87ad56 onto
NVIDIA/IsaacCapture@ef804ef.

Preserve main controller monitoring, gamepad/spacemouse support, packaging
licenses and APIs, and category-based docs. Keep EGO schemas and golden
files byte-identical to the source branch. Enable the EGO CI workflow on
the Orbbec stereo and EGOPRO development branches.

Validation: 218 C++ tests, 447 schema/session Python tests, 140 EGO/MCAP
Python tests, 45 camera preview unit tests, all-files pre-commit, strict
Sphinx build, and classic wheel/stub generation. The preview tests use a
viz import stub in the BUILD_VIZ=OFF configuration; native preview/codec
extensions were separately built and imported.

Physical EGO FW 1.1.11 with SDK 20261012: stereo H264 1600x1300@30, 302
frames per eye, 4400 accel and gyro samples each, clean decode, embedded
MCAP export matching sidecars, and native replay. Calibration reads were
unavailable and remain an explicit hardware/SDK limitation. EGOPRO
four-stream changes are outside this migration.

Bound-check each SDK chunk before you copy it into result.

The callback resizes result only to chunk->fullDataSize. It then copies chunk->size bytes to result.begin() + chunk->offset without a bounds check. The device supplies offset, size, and fullDataSize. If offset + size > fullDataSize, std::copy writes past the end of the vector and corrupts the heap. This can happen with a firmware bug, a USB transfer error, or a chunk sequence where a later chunk reports a smaller fullDataSize.

The fix: reject the transfer when offset > result.size() or when size > result.size() - offset. Also report failure if the transfer never reaches the done state, so that a partial blob is not parsed as calibration.

In the calibration transfer callback, validate each chunk’s offset and size
against result after resizing, using subtraction-based bounds checks to avoid
overflow; reject the transfer if the chunk does not fit. Also ensure the
transfer reports failure unless it reaches the done state, so partial data is
not parsed as calibration.

Legend: 🚫 BLOCKER = merge-blocking | 💡 SUGGESTION = meaningful improvement | 🧹 NIT = precise small correction

Finding
🚫 src/plugins/ego/ego.sh:623-629 - The documented "omit --duration, stop with Ctrl-C" path loses the recording. Ctrl-C also kills tee, so the plugin's shutdown log line hits a closed pipe and SIGPIPE kills it before the MCAP rename, leaving metadata.mcap.partial. L629 then dies before verification; this was reproduced against this script with a stand-in plugin. Use tee -i with an INT trap around the pipeline, or ignore SIGPIPE in the plugin.
🚫 src/plugins/ego/README.md:29-51 - On a machine with an EGO device, the plugin fails to compile against the OrbbecSDK v2 GitHub releases (v2.9.3, v2.10.6). Those releases lack the EGO APIs it uses (ob::AudioStreamProfile, ob::Device::getRawData, ob::Device::setEgoStateCallback) and PID 0x1201 in their udev rules; it builds and runs only with the 2.9.0 build from Orbbec's Feishu drive. Yet the README and ego.rst:39-42 ask only for "an OrbbecSDK v2 package compatible with the EGO camera", with no version or link. Name the exact SDK build, where to download it, and the udev rule EGO needs, in both the README and the device page.
💡 src/plugins/ego/README.md:562-565 - Setup stays manual: ego.sh "does not install packages or download SDKs", so every user fetches and unpacks the SDK by hand. Most vendor-SDK plugins install in one command instead: install_manus.sh and Wuji's install.sh download a pinned SDK, verify its SHA-256 and build the plugin. Consider the same for EGO; it needs a URL a script can download from directly.
💡 .github/workflows/test-ego-software.yaml:50 - The new workflow targets an orbbec-sdk self-hosted label that no NVIDIA workflow uses, on every push to main and release/* touching broad core paths, so unless that runner exists those jobs sit queued. L8 lists two fork branches. L87 sets BUILD_VIZ=OFF, so the examples/camera_viz/** trigger runs none of the camera_viz EGO tests.
💡 examples/camera_viz/ego_preview/ego_capture.cpp:119-134 - next_pair discards both eyes' compressed frames on a miss or a >2 ms skew, and sources/ego.py keeps feeding NVDEC with no keyframe wait. With the default format: h264, each eye then decodes against missing references until the next IDR. The plugin's own sink resyncs on an IDR for exactly this reason (frame_sink.cpp:271).
💡 docs/source/device/ego.rst:4-13 - The page for the ego_camera plugin is titled "ORBBEC Data Collection Suite Plugin". It lists UMI, WristCam and Hub, which this PR does not support, and promises support "in upcoming releases". Device pages document what the hardware is, and marketing copy has nowhere to land. Title the page for the EGO plugin and drop the product list and roadmap sentence.
🧹 docs/source/device/ego.rst:149-250 - Several docs problems:
- The page calls the host project "NV" ("NV sessions", "NV replay", "NVIDIA owns provider failure").
- It describes a "previous diagnostic protocol" that never shipped upstream.
- It, and the shared mcap_record_replay README, carry internal acceptance status.
- It sits at device/ego.rst and is listed as ../ego in cameras/index.rst, while OAK lives at device/cameras/oak.rst.
🧹 src/python/isaaccapture/ego/sync.py:349-356 - A 5-minute recording made with the README's TeleopSession example is flagged by analyze_ego_sync with sidecar contains unindexed bytes. Only the sidecar's last H.264 frame (30,395 bytes) has no metadata in the session MCAP; everything before it is aligned, which points to the host recording stopping before the plugin writes its final frame. Either stop writing the sidecar once the session closes, or let the audit accept a trailing frame without metadata.
🧹 src/python/isaaccapture/ego/sync.py:284-300 - The offline reader only finds media at fixed paths beside the MCAP: raw/ColorLeft.<ext>, raw/ColorRight.<ext> and Audio.wav. The README's audio guidance asks only for an absolute --audio-output=... path, so a WAV written anywhere else is reported as missing media for every audio record. Document the layout the offline tools require, or record the media paths instead of assuming them.

On hold — please don't change these yet

Core schemas (internal engineering discussion):

  • src/core/schema/: the five ego_*.fbs schemas, their goldens and Python bindings, ego_limits.hpp, and ego_device_state_utils.hpp.
  • The trackers built on those schemas: the three ego_* entries in trackers.toml, the hand-written EgoFrameMetadataTracker / EgoImuTracker, and their docs listings.
  • isaaccapture.ego and the ego extra: their placement in the core wheel follows from the same decision.
  • The upcoming quad-camera EGO and WristCam integrations: please don't add device-specific schemas there yet either.

Plugin shutdown timeout (still being confirmed):

  • shutdown_timeout_seconds in plugin_manager, PluginConfig and TeleopSession.
  • What depends on it: embedded_recording's timeout and the shutdown_timeout_seconds=15.0 docs guidance.

We will follow up with the changes we need once these are confirmed.

Marking the review above as changes requested: its two 🚫 items (ego.sh losing the recording on Ctrl-C, and the missing SDK version and download location) need to be fixed before merge. Details: #1252 (review)

@ivany-nv
ivany-nv marked this pull request as draft October 20, 2026 23:34
Use OrbbecEgo schema and tracker types, vendor-prefixed MCAP topics, and
the orbbec_ego_camera plugin registration throughout capture and replay.

Pin the EGO-specific SDK and add a checksum-verified installer, protect
Ctrl-C recording finalization, resync preview decoders after frame gaps,
validate calibration transfers, and handle trailing sidecar data.

Update hosted software CI, camera documentation, media layout guidance,
and regression coverage.

Validation on Ubuntu 24.04.5 x86_64, CPython 3.11.15, Release:
- 312 selected core/EGO CTest entries, including 710 Python tests
- 24 codegen unit tests and 12 independent SDK-free media-tool tests
- 218 distinct camera_viz tests across software and GPU runs
- Ruff, clang-format-14, all-files pre-commit, and strict docs build

@obzhimin Thanks for v3. To get this merged sooner, we're going to push commits to this branch ourselves over the next few days, through "Allow edits from maintainers". Please don't force-push or rebase it until we post that we're done; if you need to push before then, pull first.

Planned changes, one commit each:

  • Merge current main and resolve the conflicts. examples/camera_viz/README.md became a stub on main (docs: consolidate camera streaming user guide #1267), so the EGO viewer docs move to the Camera Streaming guide.
  • Generate OrbbecEgoImuTracker and OrbbecEgoFrameMetadataTracker from trackers.toml, one tracker per stream, the way FrameMetadataTrackerOak works. Their constructors and per-stream MCAP topics change with it.
  • Move isaaccapture.ego out of the core wheel into examples/orbbec_ego/, drop the ego extra, and rename the MCAP metadata records to orbbec_ego.*.
  • Run ego.sh verify through uv, so it no longer needs mcap in the system Python.
  • Replace test-ego-software.yaml with BUILD_EGO_MEDIA_TOOLS in the existing Ubuntu build.
  • Drop shutdown_timeout_seconds from PluginManager.start and PluginConfig. feat(plugin_manager): let a plugin set its shutdown timeout in plugin.yaml #1350 adds a shutdown_timeout_seconds key to plugin.yaml instead, and the EGO plugin will set it there.

Signed-off-by: Ivan Yang <yifanyang@nvidia.com>
The EGO plugin needs longer than the plugin manager's 2 s to close its
files, so this branch added a shutdown_timeout_seconds argument to
PluginManager.start and PluginConfig for callers to raise it. NVIDIA#1350 moves
that setting into plugin.yaml, where each plugin declares it for itself.

Restore the plugin manager and PluginConfig to main's versions, keep the
orbbec_ego_camera entry in TeleopSession's monitored plugins, and set
shutdown_timeout_seconds: 15 in the EGO plugin.yaml. The plugin manager
ignores the key until NVIDIA#1350 merges.

…manifest

OrbbecEgoImuTracker and OrbbecEgoFrameMetadataTracker were hand-written
across deviceio_base, deviceio_trackers, both factories and the pybind
module, although their live impls only drive a SchemaTracker per stream.
deviceio_trackers/AGENTS.md sends such trackers through trackers.toml,
and FrameMetadataTrackerOak became single-stream for the same reason.

Declare orbbec_ego_imu and orbbec_ego_frame_metadata in trackers.toml
and delete the hand-written stack. Each tracker now reads one collection,
for example OrbbecEgoImuTracker("ego/Accel"), and exposes get_data().
Recordings name each stream's tracker orbbec_ego_<kind>_<stream>, so the
structured topics become orbbec_ego_metadata_colorleft/FrameMetadata and
orbbec_ego_imu_accel/Imu. The plugin's own MCAP writer, the offline
reader, the verify tools, the examples, tests and docs follow that layout.

Per-stream replay also reads each stream from its own viewer, so a
recording without one of the configured streams no longer buffers the
other stream's records.

…les/orbbec_ego

isaaccapture.ego, a top-level package with an `ego` extra, shipped in
every isaaccapture wheel although only Orbbec EGO recordings use it, and
its bare "ego" names now read as the Ego Pipeline (Ego Capture, EgoPost).
Vendor recording and offline tooling lives under examples/ on main.

Move the package, its sync and calibration CLIs and the EGO replay script
into a new examples/orbbec_ego project (isaaccapture_examples.orbbec_ego),
with its tests under tests/python/examples/orbbec_ego. Drop the `ego`
extra from isaaccapture and the isaacteleop compat package.

Rename the names that recordings persist to the vendor prefix: the MCAP
metadata records become orbbec_ego.recording, orbbec_ego.merge and
orbbec_ego.time_alignment, and the plugin's MCAP profile orbbec_ego. The
merge tool's logger and MCAP library become isaaccapture.plugins.ego.merge,
under the plugin's own logger name.

ego.sh record ends with verify, whose MCAP checks import mcap from the
system python3. install.sh does not install it, and the suggested
`python3 -m pip install --user mcap` fails on Ubuntu 24.04 (PEP 668) and
on a stock 22.04 without pip, so the documented install-then-record path
failed at its last step.

Run those tools with python3 when it already has a reader, as in an
activated venv, and otherwise with `uv run --no-project --with mcap`;
install.sh already requires uv. doctor and verify fail only when neither
is available, and the docs drop the pip advice.

…parate workflow

test-ego-software.yaml ran on pushes and same-repo PRs that touch most of
src/core, downloaded the Orbbec SDK without a cache, and rebuilt and
reran the full suite that build-ubuntu already runs. Its fork guard also
meant it never ran on fork PRs such as this one.

Remove it and configure build-ubuntu with BUILD_EGO_MEDIA_TOOLS=ON, as it
already does for the OAK plugin. That builds the merge and export tools
and runs their tests and the ego.sh and install.sh script tests on every
PR, with no SDK download.

… guide

NVIDIA#1267 replaced the camera_viz README with a stub that points to the Camera
Streaming guide, so the EGO lines this branch added to that README were
dropped when merging main. Add them to the guide instead: the --with-ego
setup flag, the ego source type, and the --stereo-debug window option.

@obzhimin Follow-up to the note above: GitHub does not let maintainers push to a branch on a fork owned by an organization, so the commits are on ivany-nv/orbbec-ego-maintainer-fixes instead. It starts from your current head (2b8b5764), so you can fast-forward your branch to it:

git fetch https://github.com/NVIDIA/IsaacCapture.git ivany-nv/orbbec-ego-maintainer-fixes
git checkout feature/Orbbec-Ego-stereo-camera
git merge --ff-only FETCH_HEAD
git push origin feature/Orbbec-Ego-stereo-camera

It merges current main, including #1350, and adds six signed-off commits:

  • fix(ego): the 15 s shutdown timeout moves into the plugin's plugin.yaml (feat(plugin_manager): let a plugin set its shutdown timeout in plugin.yaml #1350); PluginManager.start and PluginConfig are back to main.
  • refactor(ego): OrbbecEgoImuTracker and OrbbecEgoFrameMetadataTracker are generated from trackers.toml, one tracker per collection, for example OrbbecEgoImuTracker("ego/Accel") with get_data(). Their topics become orbbec_ego_imu_accel/Imu and orbbec_ego_metadata_colorleft/FrameMetadata.
  • refactor(ego): isaaccapture.ego and its CLIs move to examples/orbbec_ego (isaaccapture_examples.orbbec_ego, installed with uv pip install -e ./examples/orbbec_ego). The ego extra is gone, and the MCAP metadata records are now orbbec_ego.recording, orbbec_ego.merge and orbbec_ego.time_alignment.
  • fix(ego): ego.sh verify runs its MCAP checks through uv when the system Python has no mcap.
  • ci(ego): test-ego-software.yaml is replaced by BUILD_EGO_MEDIA_TOOLS=ON in the Ubuntu build.
  • docs(ego): the camera_viz EGO notes move to the Camera Streaming guide.

The readers no longer accept recordings made with the old topic or metadata names. With the plugin built against v2.10.6-EGO-20261019, the full test suite passes; we have not run it on a device, so please check capture and replay on yours after updating.

@ivany-nv Thanks for the maintainer fixes. I have fast-forwarded my branch to bd4651a and pushed it to this PR.
I rebuilt against v2.10.6-EGO-20261019 and tested on an EGO device with firmware 1.2.0 over USB 2.0.
Hardware validation passed:

  • Stereo H.264, H.265, and MJPEG capture at 1600×1300@30, with IMU, audio, and complete calibration.
  • Embedded MCAP recording, media export, full decoding, and structured replay using the new per-stream trackers.
  • Ctrl-C recording finalization and normal PluginManager shutdown.
No sequence gaps or queue drops were reported in these runs. Local software checks also passed: 346 CTest entries, including 821 Python tests; 29 codegen tests; 12 independent SDK-free tests; pre-commit and clang-format checks.

Merge main at a74babb while preserving
the maintainer fixes through bd4651a.

Move the EGO preview bridge into the installed camera_viz package and
update imports, setup paths, documentation, and regression tests for
the upstream namespace package migration.

Validated with core/EGO CTest, codegen and camera_viz tests, native
builds, strict docs, and device capture, structured replay, media
verification, clean shutdown, and GPU stereo preview.

@ivany-nv Hi Ivan,I preserved your commits through bd4651a, merged main at a74babb, and resolved the new conflicts from the camera_viz package migration. Merge commit b14872e is now pushed to this PR’s source branch with DCO sign-off. GitHub now reports no merge conflicts.
I rebuilt the core, EGO plugin, media tools, capture bridge and codec, then validated on an EGO device using SDK v2.10.6-EGO-20261019:

  • H.264/H.265/MJPEG capture with IMU, audio and calibration; structured MCAP replay and complete decoding of both video streams.
  • Embedded-media export, Ctrl-C shutdown, and PluginManager recording/clean exit.
  • Live GPU stereo preview, with 60 rendered frames per format.
Local software checks passed: 346 CTest entries (including 821 Python cases), 29 codegen tests, camera_viz CPU (226 passed) and GPU (9 passed) runs, pre-commit, clang-format 14, and the strict docs build.
The core, bridge and codec were freshly built; preview reused the existing VIZ renderer binary. I have not tested with an XR headset.
