So far, all of the passwords are the same - a1b2c3d4e5

internet says to edit /etc/grub.d/00_header:
if [
${recordfail} = 1 ]; then set timeout=-1 else set timeout=$ {GRUB_TIMEOUT} fi
What is need is just change the 1st timeout from -1 to a value you like and run 'sudo update-grub2'. The value 0 will bypass the menu and any value >=1 is the time of countdown after a unsuccessful boot.
But I couldn't get this to work, so edited the boot/grub/grub.cfg directly:
from:
function recordfail { set recordfail=1 if [ -n "${have_grubenv}" ]; then if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then save_env recordfail; fi; fi }
to:
function recordfail { set recordfail=0 if [ -n "${have_grubenv}" ]; then if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then save_env recordfail; fi; fi }

edit /etc/fstab: on the line with the hard drive (/dev/sda1) change the last number to a 0 (as explained in the link)
now a check will only be performed if explicitly commanded to do so:

- ip: dynamic
- system name: uwesub-dev
- user name: phoenix-dev
I have added 'hosts' into the virtual machine /etc/hosts file... this means that you do not need to type the ip addresses for uwesub.
I have also generated keys so that you can connect over the network without a password.
To connect to uwesub over wifi: ssh phoenix@uwesub ... I have also added an alias for this sshsub
VERY IMPORTANT: when logging into uwesub, a message will appear stating:
New release '12.04.2 LTS' available. Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it.
IGNOR THIS... DO NOT UPGRADE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
