Summary

This branch gives the HNSW and ef_construction sweep environment checks
separate Cargo test targets. Their injected environment policy remains private
to each benchmark, while Criterion keeps its existing benchmark entrypoints.
The split removes Cargo's duplicate-target warnings and lets the 22 environment
cases run without compiling unused benchmark code.

This layer follows #294, the
core module move, and precedes the assertion-message lint wave.

Review walkthrough

Validation

  • cargo metadata --no-deps --format-version 1: no duplicate-target warnings.
  • Dedicated environment targets: 8 HNSW and 14 ef-sweep tests passed without compiler warnings.
  • Release Criterion --list: 35 HNSW and 8 ef-sweep cases, without warnings.
  • make fmt, make check-fmt, make spelling, make markdownlint, make nixie, mbake validate Makefile, make test-workflow-contracts, make typecheck, and make lint: passed; workflow contracts: 446; lint includes Whitaker.
  • make test NEXTEST_ARGS=--cargo-verbose: passed with 1,242 Nextest cases and the stable verification leaves.
  • make kani: six configured invocations, six successful verification markers. make verus: 21 and 4 proofs verified.
  • Stable cargo test --workspace --doc --all-features with warnings denied: 137 passed, 17 ignored.
  • All changed Rust files remain below 400 lines; the final candidate received an independent structural review with no consequential findings.

Notes

The ancestor #282 remains blocked by hosted CodeScene project configuration lacking gates, tracked in #283. Hosted run 35964290524 passed build-test, Verus, and CodeScene Health on this head. Its changed-line coverage file, upload, and check steps were skipped because the stacked base harden-lint-modules is not the analysed default branch; there is no changed-line coverage verdict. The source-level lint waves follow this structural layer.

Summary by Sourcery

Separate benchmark environment checks from Criterion benchmark targets while preserving existing benchmark behavior and entrypoints.

Enhancements:

  • Separate HNSW and ef_construction sweep environment checks into dedicated Cargo test targets while keeping Criterion benchmark entrypoints intact.
  • Isolate benchmark-specific environment policies and profiling helpers behind private modules shared only by their owning benchmark and tests.
  • Avoid compiling unused benchmark code for environment checks and eliminate Cargo duplicate-target warnings.

Documentation:

  • Document the private-module exception for HNSW and ef_construction sweep environment policies in the developer guide.

Tests:

  • Move HNSW and ef_construction sweep environment-policy tests into dedicated integration-test wrappers.

Add a weekly Dependabot entry for the pinned Rust toolchain, using the
existing dependency and toolchain channel labels. Preserve the current
Cargo update groups and GitHub Actions schedule.
Pass owned collections directly to `Iterator::zip` in HNSW distance
and search loops. This preserves consumption and ordering while keeping
the loops clean under the pinned nightly Clippy used by development
builds.
Remove an unnecessary panic-format comma and express the MST test helper's Option-driven loop as while let. This keeps the existing bounds and path-compression behaviour while clearing diagnostics exposed by the pinned development toolchain.
Document the internal nightly entrypoints and replace unchecked lane
indexing with bounds-aware chunk iteration. Preserve paired-lane
accumulation, scalar tails, and logical output lengths while satisfying
the pinned nightly lint gate.
Keep the extraction benchmark display contract unchanged while clearing
an error reported by the pinned May nightly Clippy.
Select the explicit Cranelift Cargo fragment for standard debug Make
commands and provision its dated toolchain and verified mold binary in
CI. Keep release, coverage, verification, and Whitaker on their own
routes.

Nextest starts a separate Cargo build, so pass the fragment to both
Cargo and nextest. Run byte-exact compiler-diagnostic tests with the
repository's stable pin to preserve their existing stderr contracts.
Exercise every route, exclusion, and failure path in local Make tests.
Choose the child container once before recursing through workflow
values. This removes CodeScene's Bumpy Road Ahead finding while
preserving dict and list traversal order. Cover nested strings and
ignored scalar values with a focused contract test.
Keep the nightly lane focused on the positive portable-SIMD compile check,
and retain the trybuild timeout for both split test names.
Make the HNSW graph test helpers propagate lock errors and cover
poisoned-lock behaviour without partially reconfiguring the index.

Keep ordinary debug tests on dev-fast Nextest, but route this exact
panic-unwind regression through a binding pinned-stable test leaf.
Contract tests and maintainer guidance cover the exception.
Move stable verification assertions into a private helper so the Make
routing contract remains below CodeScene's method-size limit. Keep its
checks, failure messages, and command order intact, and document the
helper's local reuse boundary.
Return parameter and graph setup errors from rstest fixtures instead of
panicking in shared helpers. Extract fixture values with contextual
expectations in recognised test bodies, while the Result-returning graph
test propagates its fixture error.
Document when recognised test bodies should extract fallible fixtures
with a reasoned expectation. Returning Result for assertion-heavy rstest
bodies triggers the denied panic_in_result_fn lint, while genuinely
fallible tests can continue to propagate errors with ?.
Rename internal identifiers, tests, Verus proofs, and prose to Oxford
spelling while retaining the public CandidateEdge::canonicalise alias
and the benchmark CSV's fixed filename and column bytes.

Remove broad typo exemptions, keep only narrow compatibility contexts,
and regenerate typos.toml from the selected dictionary revision.
Keep markdownlint-cli2's broad Markdown glob out of the ignored Verus
installation. The formatter now leaves vendor documentation untouched
while continuing to check repository Markdown.
Explain why generated third-party Verus installation Markdown remains
outside the repository formatter and lint scope.
Keep the Chutoro module beside its properties submodule ahead of
self-named-module lint enforcement. Adjust the test module paths so
both test configurations continue to use their existing source files.
Move benchmark-specific environment policy into private support modules
shared by the Criterion targets and dedicated integration tests. This
removes duplicate Cargo target declarations while keeping environment
checks executable without unused benchmark code.

Summary

  • Separate HNSW and ef_construction environment policies into private modules and dedicated Cargo test targets. Keep the Criterion entrypoints intact and avoid compiling benchmark code for these environment tests.
  • Add a pinned dev-fast toolchain and Make targets for development builds, tests, lint and type-checking. Install and verify the pinned Linux mold release, and add CI prerequisites and routing contract tests.
  • Make HNSW test helpers return lock errors instead of panicking. Propagate those errors through affected tests and property-test operations.
  • Standardise several Rust identifiers on American spelling. Keep compatibility aliases and preserve the existing lane-report CSV schema.
  • Split portable SIMD feature-gating checks into separate compile and rejection tests, and update their CI and nextest filters.

The developer guide documents the toolchain routes and benchmark module boundary. The design documentation updates CandidateEdge::canonicalize references; no new execplan document is identified.

Reported checks

The PR description reports 8 HNSW and 14 ef-sweep environment tests passed. It also reports that release Criterion listings retain 35 HNSW and 8 ef-sweep cases, and that formatting, lint, test, verification and documentation-test checks passed. Hosted changed-line coverage was skipped, so no coverage verdict is available.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a pinned development toolchain and test routes, extracts benchmark environment policies, updates benchmark reporting identifiers, improves error propagation in HNSW test helpers, and changes SIMD kernel chunk processing. It also updates related tests, documentation and configuration.

Changes

Development toolchain and test routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pinned toolchain and Make routing
Makefile, tools/dev-fast/*, tools/mold/*, scripts/install-mold.sh, .github/dependabot.yml
Adds dev-fast Make routes, a pinned nightly Cranelift configuration, and Linux mold installation with version and checksum checks. Dependabot adds weekly root Rust toolchain updates.
Test routes and stable checks
.config/nextest.toml, Makefile, .github/workflows/nightly-portable-simd.yml, chutoro-core/tests/*
Splits portable SIMD gating into feature-absent and feature-present test names. The test gate runs selected diagnostic tests with stable Cargo. The Makefile type-check test now checks a dry-run command.
CI provisioning and routing contracts
.github/workflows/*, tests/workflow_contracts/*, AGENTS.md, docs/developers-guide.md, docs/repository-layout.md, .markdownlint-cli2.jsonc
Adds prerequisite installation to CI and coverage workflows. Adds contract tests for routing, installation order, test boundaries and lint execution. Updates toolchain guidance and excludes generated Verus Markdown from markdown linting.

Benchmark environment and reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Benchmark environment policies
chutoro-benches/Cargo.toml, chutoro-benches/benches/hnsw.rs, chutoro-benches/benches/hnsw_ef_sweep.rs, chutoro-benches/benches/internal/*, chutoro-benches/tests/hnsw*
Moves HNSW memory profiling, MNIST selection and ef-sweep report settings into internal environment modules. Adds tests for environment parsing, collection defaults and report paths.
Lane report identifiers
chutoro-benches/src/neighbour_scoring/*, chutoro-benches/tests/neighbour_scoring_support.rs, docs/developers-guide.md
Renames lane-utilisation Rust identifiers to “utilization”. Keeps the report filename and CSV column spelling unchanged. The support test no longer asserts a fixed filename constant.

HNSW test error propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fallible graph test helpers and fixtures
chutoro-core/src/hnsw/cpu/test_helpers.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/graph/test_helpers/tests.rs, chutoro-core/src/chutoro/mod.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/build.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/property/tests.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/search.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/insert/commit/tests/mod.rs
Graph inspection and test reconfiguration return errors. Test fixtures propagate parameter-construction errors. A poisoned-lock test checks the returned errors and confirms that failed reconfiguration retains the current parameters.
Property-test error handling
chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/property/idempotency_property.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/property/mutation_property/mod.rs
Snapshot and comparison operations return results. Property tests report snapshot and reconfiguration errors instead of continuing with failed operations.

Portable SIMD kernels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Chunked kernel processing
chutoro-providers/dense/src/simd/kernels/*
The packed-point kernel processes output chunks and checks for complete 16-lane coordinate slices. The scalar-row kernel iterates over paired complete chunks. Comments describe dimensions and zero-distance examples.

Identifier spelling alignment

Layer / File(s) Summary
HNSW update and search names
chutoro-core/src/hnsw/insert/*, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/search/*, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/helpers.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/validate.rs
Renames update and initialization identifiers and changes SearchState::finalise to finalize. Several zip expressions no longer call into_iter explicitly.
Edge canonicalization API and proofs
chutoro-core/src/hnsw/types.rs, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/edge_harvest/*, chutoro-core/src/hnsw/tests/property/edge_harvest_output/harvest.rs, verus/*, docs/*
Renames the primary CandidateEdge method and related test and proof references to canonicalize. Keeps canonicalise as a compatibility method that delegates to canonicalize.
SIMD policy and related references
chutoro-providers/dense/src/simd/semantics.rs, chutoro-providers/dense/src/simd/tests/*, chutoro-providers/dense/src/tests/provider.rs, docs/execplans/*, docs/property-testing-design.md, typos*.toml
Renames the non-finite policy variant and related references. Updates additional test, documentation and spelling-check patterns to match the renamed identifiers.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Add tests for the new scripts/install-mold.sh behaviour. The pull request adds architecture selection, warm-install validation, archive structure checks, checksum verification, extraction, and binary version checks, but no changed test references or exercises this script. The existing workflow tests only check Makefile routing, workflow ordering, executable bits, and static version/checksum metadata. They would still pass if the installer used the wrong archive, skipped validation, or failed to reuse or replace an installation.

Resolution

Create deterministic installer tests. Mock uname, curl, and the archive tools, or extract the decision logic into testable functions. Cover Linux x86_64 and aarch64 archive selection, unsupported OS and architecture failures, checksum mismatch rejection, incomplete or wrong-version warm installs, required archive members, successful installation, and final mold/ld.mold version validation. Keep tests offline and assert that failed validation does not install unverified files.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

The new hnsw_ef_sweep_environment test target cannot compile. The wrapper declares mod tests at the crate root, but six case attributes in hnsw_ef_sweep_tests.rs call super::super::environment; this has one super too many. A minimal Rust compilation confirms the error: “there are too many leading super keywords”. The dedicated tests therefore cannot verify the ef-sweep environment behaviour.

Resolution

Replace each affected super::super::environment::... reference in chutoro-benches/benches/internal/hnsw_ef_sweep_tests.rs with super::environment::... or crate::environment::.... Run the dedicated hnsw_ef_sweep_environment target and confirm all cases pass.

Add mold to the tool-installer table and correct the script count.

This change adds scripts/install-mold.sh. CI now runs it through make install-dev-fast, and it sources scripts/lib/pinned-download.sh. The "Tool installers" table says it lists every tool CI installs, but it has no mold row. The next paragraph still says "The four repository scripts share scripts/lib/pinned-download.sh". Both statements are now wrong.

Align extracted report paths with the required path API. The new policies, profiler, and tests use std::path::PathBuf. Change the path contract consistently, and preserve configured OS-string path behaviour.

Combine the warning literals with concat!().

Remove the backslash continuation. As per coding guidelines: “Use concat!() to combine long string literals rather than escaping newlines with a backslash.”

Assert discovery defaults independently of the mode detectors. Both tests derive their expected result from the detector used by the policy. A detector regression can therefore leave both tests passing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Force the dry-run to print recipes; the release case fails once a local release binary exists.

release depends on the file target target/release/$(APP). The pattern rule target/%/$(APP) has no prerequisites. If target/release/chutoro-cli exists, make --dry-run release reports the target as up to date and prints no recipe. Line 294 then fails the release-build case with "did not emit its expected command". This happens on any machine that has run make release. CI does not see it, because nothing builds a release binary before the contract tests.

Pass --always-make so the dry-run always evaluates recipes. Phony targets do not change. The helper returns the recipes and runs nothing.
