Summary

This 12-commit branch completes the audited Rust-boundary work for #379. It
confines native descriptor, handle, syscall, and PyO3 obligations to audited
boundary crates while keeping cuprum-streams safe in every target. The final
two commits make descriptor cleanup scope explicit and correct the developer
guide's Oxford spelling.

Closes #379.

Roadmap: 8.4 in docs/roadmap.md.

PR #412 superseded the former spelling-parent layer. This branch was replayed
onto main at a97d0a8b25959d7ce3373f5ab3af708e7050f8b1; its current head is
1a83587c914f0c603e42d6bed5d0bddb76c2534f. It intentionally retains
TYPOS_CONFIG_BUILDER_VERSION ?= v0.1.2 as a floating tag, following PR #412's
selected shared builder architecture.

The series contains 11 boundary commits and one spelling-remediation commit.
PR #409 is the next stack layer
and bases on this exact head.

Review walkthrough

Replay and review repair

The replay used Git's merge backend with zdiff3 conflict inspection. It
retains the boundary model and ownership changes, restores the standalone
Markdown reflow commit, and removes only obsolete spelling-refresh baggage.
The developer-guide conflicts retain PR #412's spelling policy verbatim,
remove legacy spelling-rollout explanations, and keep the boundary installer
documentation limited to its actual private responsibilities. Makefile and
pyproject.toml merged without changing the selected builder architecture.

Commit 8351ca1fc4184a3eb30bc38c0aa175e6e4340e7d addresses CodeRabbit
discussion_r4032918316. It replaces manual try/finally descriptor cleanup
with ExitStack callbacks. Only the duplicate-descriptor callback suppresses
OSError, because the validation path may close that descriptor; the original
source and sink still fail loudly if cleanup is wrong.

Commit 1a83587c914f0c603e42d6bed5d0bddb76c2534f corrects the two remaining
hand-written spellings in the developers' guide.

Validation

The exact current head passed every available full sequential local gate:

  • make check-fmt, make lint, and make typecheck;
  • make test: 1,810 passed, 1 skipped, including 123 of 123 Rust tests;
  • make spelling twice with stable generated output;
  • make markdownlint, make nixie, make boundary-test, and
    make boundary-contract;
  • make boundary-verus: 2 verified results; and
  • make test-extension: 81 passed, 1 skipped.

The spelling remediation also passed mdtablefix --check, make spelling,
make markdownlint, and make develop, which built the CPython 3.14 native
extension. No msrv-check target exists in this repository.

Hosted checks and the current-head managed CodeRabbit review remain pending.
Earlier review and hosted evidence is retained only for its original candidate
and is not treated as current-head acceptance.

Train coordination and limits

shared-actions#496
remains open. It tracks the external deterministic CodeScene coverage CLI
installation problem; it is not a Cuprum source failure.

Summary

Isolate native I/O and Python FFI from stream orchestration for issue #379.

  • Add audited cuprum-native-io and safe cuprum-streams crates.
  • Enforce unsafe_code = "forbid" in safe targets.
  • Add checked descriptor, handle, buffer, progress, and UTF-8 handling.
  • Preserve ownership, cleanup, fallback, cancellation, and platform behaviour.
  • Reject closing asyncio transports before native descriptor hand-off.
  • Simplify _pump_over_raw_fds with _permit_test_owned_descriptor_handoff.
  • Add ownership, regression, contract, fault, packaging, Verus, Kani, and Miri validation.
  • Add CI workflows, pinned verifier tooling, cache controls, and source-distribution checks.
  • Document the boundary model and verification limits in ADR-011 and the Rust boundary verification inventory.
  • Record the historical native-payload mismatch and closing-transport regression in the debugging plan.

Local validation passed. The hosted coverage check remains blocked by the external leynos/shared-actions#496 CodeScene installation/parsing failure. Do not treat hosted Windows/macOS runtime results or Loom coverage as established by the supplied evidence. No new execplan document was added.

Walkthrough

The change separates safe Rust stream orchestration, audited native I/O, and Python integration. It adds transport and descriptor validation, ownership and kernel checks, verifier tooling, hosted CI, packaging coverage, and boundary documentation.

The installer test currently needs global import-state mutation to load the Z3 installer as a package, and several public or repository contracts need small corrections. These are bounded issues that can be fixed before merge or explicitly accepted.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The PR adds substantial boundary harnesses, but their executable validation paths are not guarded by tests. scripts/tests/test_boundary_contract.py imports and tests only check_members and check_safe_policy; it does not exercise main, _compile, _unsafe_was_forbidden, _probe_appended, or _check_target. The contract tests would remain green if the unsafe-probe compilation checks were removed or made no-ops. scripts/tests/test_boundary_faults.py tests only read_tool_pins and mutate; it does not exercise _check, main, _verify_progress_faults, or _verify_ownership_faults. The fault harness could therefore stop running controls or stop checking verifier failures while its tests still pass. The renderer tests cover render and _production_half, but not main and its generated assessment artefacts. Other changed behaviour has strong substantive coverage, including real pipe/transport regressions, descriptor ownership and unwind tests, stream I/O/error tests, installer archive tests, workflow contract tests, and source-distribution tests. The missing harness-path tests still violate the exhaustive testing condition.

Resolution

Add substantive orchestration tests for the new boundary scripts without depending on Verus, Kani, or Cargo implementations. Inject or monkeypatch the compiler/verifier command seams and temporary repository/workspace paths. Assert that check_boundary_contract.main compiles the baseline, probes all three targets with all three unsafe probes, requires the unsafe-forbid diagnostic, writes logs, and restores every target after success and failure. Assert that check_boundary_faults runs each control before its mutation, requires the designated failure diagnostic, archives output, restores mutations on failure, and fails closed for unexpected results. Exercise render_boundary_proofs.main with temporary source and destination paths and assert that all generated artefacts contain the production bodies and exclude test modules. Make each test fail if the corresponding executable path is bypassed or replaced with a no-op.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The PR documents the Rust boundaries, ADR-011, design changes, verifier tooling, Make targets, and roadmap completion. It does not document the new source-distribution build requirement in docs/developers-guide.md. The PR adds Rust workspace source-include entries in pyproject.toml and adds tests/test_native_sdist.py, which requires both uv and Maturin archives to retain all three crate sources and metadata while excluding target. This requirement appears only in docs/rust-boundary-verification.md and ADR-011, not in the developer guide. The omission is introduced by the changed packaging configuration.

Resolution

Add a developer-guide section for the native Rust source-distribution contract. Document the required workspace manifests, lockfile, toolchain and Dylint files, all three crate source trees, exclusion of target output, both uv build --sdist and Maturin commands, the tests/test_native_sdist.py check, and the need to update pyproject.toml and the test when the workspace changes.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Fail the check for hidden fallibility in new query helpers. In scripts/install_boundary_kani.py, _cache_is_current(destination, digest) -> bool performs Path.exists() and then _digest(), which opens the cache file and runs hashlib.file_digest. Permission, storage, and other filesystem failures are not represented by the boolean API or documented as errors. An exists() failure can also be treated as a cache miss, after which checked_download() starts the network download and writes a replacement. scripts/check_boundary_faults.py:read_tool_pins() -> ToolPins has the same issue: it reads two files but exposes no explicit failure contract. The Rust stream APIs otherwise make I/O fallibility explicit with io::Result or Result, and the installer tests cover normal and injected failures but do not cover these query seams.

Resolution

Make filesystem queries explicit at the installer boundary. Have _cache_is_current use a narrow injected filesystem/hash seam or return a documented result that distinguishes cache miss from cache-read failure; do not convert access errors into a download. Catch and map cache-read errors in checked_download to a clear installer error while preserving the existing cache. Give read_tool_pins an explicit error contract and handle missing, unreadable, or invalid pin files at the command boundary. Add tests for permission/read failures and verify that no network request or cache write occurs.

Boundaries stand with contracts bright
Streams move safely day and night
Native handles close with care
Proof tools guard the paths they share
CI records each checked flight
Rust and Python meet just right

3672-3675: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the stale buffer-size implementation reference.

rust/cuprum-rust/src/lib.rs now calls BufferSize::new(size) and returns BufferSize from validate_buffer_size. This does not match the documented checked_buffer_size(i64) -> Result<usize, &'static str> contract. Update the paragraph to describe the current implementation boundary.

As per coding guidelines, keep docs/developers-guide.md synchronized with the implementation.

Move stream policy into cuprum-streams and forbid unsafe Rust in every
library, test, and helper target. Confine native resource ownership and
I/O to cuprum-native-io and the existing PyO3 integration crate. Replace
unchecked UTF-8 conversion with checked operations.

Verify shared production kernels with pinned Verus and Kani binaries,
retain real descriptor and unwind tests, and add isolated Miri checks.
Enforce the crate allowlist with negative compiler probes and demonstrate
verification sensitivity with deliberate production faults. Document
external assumptions and bounded proof limitations explicitly.

Preserve optional native builds and both source-distribution formats.
Reject closing asyncio readers before native borrowing, retain buffered
Python fallback data, and validate reader arguments before writer transfer.
Keep cancellation tests focused on live workers and actual completion.

Record the pre-extraction intermittent output-loss evidence without
claiming that the closing-reader fix explains every observed mismatch.
Record passing local gates and bounded verifier results for the unsafe
boundary extraction. Preserve the unexplained historical payload mismatch
and distinguish it from the separately fixed closing-reader lifetime gap.
Record the passing post-rebase gates and update audited source references
for the separate PyO3 export module. Retain proof bounds and outstanding
hosted-platform checks alongside the first clean milestone review.
Override CI's Python 3.13 selection when running the pinned prover-tools
package, which requires Python 3.14. Add a regression that rejects an
ambient-only interpreter choice without changing the project test matrix.
Colocate Windows I/O with its handle adapter and share byte-count
conversion. Separate installer response handling from redirect traversal,
and split fault checks by property. Name the compiler rejection predicate.

Retain the typed ownership contracts, fail-closed checks, and verified
production kernels while clearing the measured CodeScene findings.
Main extracted the inline `mod tests` in `tracing_capture` into a separate
`#[path]`-declared file while this branch was moving the module out of
`cuprum-rust` into the safe `cuprum-streams` crate. The rebase carried the
`#[path = "tracing_capture_tests.rs"]` attribute into the new crate but left
the test file behind, so the module could not be resolved and `rustfmt`
aborted. Move the file beside its module; it reaches the capture helpers
through `super`, so the move needs no edits.

Rebuild `rust/Cargo.lock` from main's version so every pin main chose is
preserved exactly and only the new workspace members and their transitive
dependencies are added. The lock the rebase assembled by auto-merge was
incomplete, dropping `futures-macro` and `slab`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The rebase kept this branch's closing-reader guard, which declines the
hand-off when the reader's transport is already closing: asyncio silently
ignores a pause there, and its queued connection_lost callback can still
close the descriptor before it is duplicated.

main's dispatch test seam substitutes the descriptor supply with a pipe the
test owns, so there is no borrowed descriptor for a closing transport to
invalidate. The guard still vetoed, and the cancellation behaviour scenario
handed off only intermittently: 1 pass in 5 runs, against 5 in 5 with the
guard reverted.

Report the closing transport as its own field on _ReaderPause instead of a
bare decline, and let _pump_over_raw_fds overrule it when the seam supplies
descriptors. A real hand-off still refuses a closing reader, and the pause
seam keeps the one-argument signature that eight test modules monkeypatch.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
`_pump_over_raw_fds` carried the closing-transport/`raw_fd_extractor`
compound conditional inline, which pushed its cyclomatic complexity to
CodeScene's Complex Method threshold (cc = 10).

Move that exception into a private synchronous helper,
`_permit_test_owned_descriptor_handoff`, which returns a permitted
verdict only when the reader's transport is closing *and* the dispatch
seam supplies its own descriptors; otherwise it returns the pause
verdict unchanged. The helper stays in `cuprum/_pipeline_streams.py`
because that module owns `_PUMP_STREAM_DISPATCH_TEST_HOOKS` and this
exception; `cuprum/_pipeline_stream_fds.py` describes only the generic
pause contract.

Control flow and the descriptor hand-off contract are otherwise
unchanged: a real hand-off still declines a closing reader. Add focused
coverage for both branches of the new helper alongside the existing
dispatch-selection tests.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Resolving the rebase conflict in `docs/developers-guide.md` by hand left
the paragraph that joins main's FD-borrow contract to this branch's
worker-duplicate hand-off wrapped to my own line breaks. The repository's
canonical Markdown check compares against `mdtablefix` output, so
`make check-fmt` failed on this one file.

Run `mdtablefix --in-place --wrap --renumber --breaks --ellipsis
--fences` over the file. The reflow is the only change: the sentences and
their order are untouched, and `scripts/check-markdown-format.sh` now
passes.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Keep boundary checks from retaining checkout credentials and run every
verifier command through the repository-local environment. Read verifier
pins from their canonical files, propagate compiler failures, and reject
ambiguous proof-module boundaries so validation cannot silently drift.

Replace infallible stream-buffer allocation with a fallible error path that
the PyO3 boundary exposes as `OSError`. Keep native descriptor observation
test-only, and add targeted regressions for allocation, test-owned hand-off,
workflow credentials, pin correspondence, and proof correspondence.

Bring the ADR, verification record, developer guide, roadmap, annotations,
and Oxford spelling in line with the delivered boundary behaviour.
Ensure the validation test releases every descriptor through `ExitStack`.
Suppress duplicate-close errors only because validation closes it first.
Close the Testing, Unit Architecture, User-Facing Documentation, and
Observability findings on the audited Rust boundary work.

Installers (Testing): give `main()` an isolated-tree seam via
`CUPRUM_BOUNDARY_ROOT`, and cover both installers end to end with
synthetic release archives — Kani (gzip tar with exactly `cargo-kani`
and `kani`), Z3 (zip with exactly `<NAME>/bin/z3`) — monkeypatching the
download and the expected digests so `main()` verifies synthetic bytes
without network access. Add a stale-version-pin rejection and a
truncated-archive failure that must not install a partial frontend,
alongside the preserved checksum, HTTPS, redirect, and cache tests.

Ownership observation (Unit Architecture): both `fd_is_open` arms now
return `io::Result<bool>`. Unix retries `EINTR`, answers `Ok(false)`
only for `EBADF`, and returns the kernel error otherwise; Windows
answers `Ok(false)` only for `ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE` and returns the
Win32 error otherwise. Ownership tests observe through a helper that
panics with the underlying error, so an observation failure can never
masquerade as an ownership verdict.

Allocation telemetry (Observability): a refused scratch allocation
emits `scratch buffer allocation refused` at error level with a stable
`error_category=buffer_allocation_failed`, a power-of-two
`buffer_size` bucket, and the same `platform` field as the I/O seam
events, inside the operation span. No allocator internals, identifiers,
or payloads are logged; `PumpError::BufferAllocationFailed` remains the
returned error.

Docs: the users guide now states that scratch allocation is fallible,
that a refusal raises `OSError` with the stable message `failed to
allocate the stream buffer` and no `errno`, that it never aborts the
embedding process, and documents the new error event and its fields.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Resolve the six still-valid inline review threads and the live
developer-documentation warning from the review of 16faa9e.

Reader preparation now rejects a negative descriptor before the
platform conversion, so a negative Windows CRT descriptor raises the
documented `ValueError` instead of `msvcrt.get_osfhandle`'s `OSError`;
a regression test pins the ordering. The install-boundary-kani recipe
invokes `$(CARGO)` rather than a literal `cargo`, matching the
repository's configured executable.

The contract checker extracts the probe write/restore pair into a
`_probe_appended` context manager, and the fault harness reads the
Kani and Verus pins through a typed `read_tool_pins()` helper invoked
only on verification paths, so importing `mutate` no longer requires
either pin file. An unexpected verifier result now raises the domain
error `BoundaryFaultError`, carrying the check name, exit code, and
archived log path as structured attributes.

The native source-distribution regression asserts `rust/dylint.toml`
for both packaging backends, and the developer guide replaces the
stale `cargo kani --package cuprum-rust` recipe with
`make install-boundary-kani` followed by `make boundary-kani`,
documenting the pinned Kani 0.67.0 and the two verified crates.

CodeScene's Overall Code Complexity rule flagged
`scripts/install_boundary_kani.py` (mean cyclomatic complexity 4.14 across
7 functions, threshold 4), failing the "new code is healthy" gate for a file
this branch adds.

Extract the existing seams into named units with no behaviour change:
- `_cache_is_current` and `_require_digest` isolate `checked_download`'s
  cache-reuse and checksum-refusal branches
- `_connect` and `_fetch_body` split `_download_once`'s URL validation and
  redirect-versus-body classification
- `_require_current_pin` and `_extract_frontend` carry `main`'s pin check and
  archive extraction

The public surface (`checked_download`, `boundary_root`, `main`) is unchanged
and the sibling Z3 installer still imports both helpers by name.

Verification: radon mean complexity 4.14 -> 2.23; installer behaviour tests
10 passed; ruff format/check, ty 0.0.74, pylint 4.0.7 (10.00/10), df12 plugin
(10.00/10), and interrogate 100% all clean.

Address six valid CodeRabbit inline findings and all three failed
pre-merge check rows.

Inline findings:
- `cuprum/_streams_rs.py`: document in `rust_pump_stream` that the
wrapper rejects a negative `reader_fd` with `ValueError` before the
native hand-off, distinct from the native `ImportError`/`OSError`
- `docs/users-guide.md`: state that power-of-two bucketing applies to
the allocation-failure event's `buffer_size`, while the operation span
  carries the exact requested size
- `scripts/check_boundary_faults.py`: build the fault-sensitivity
  message in a local `msg` before `super().__init__`
- `scripts/install_boundary_z3.py`: import `install_boundary_kani` as a
package when `__package__` is set, keeping the bare import for direct
script execution; drop the `sys.modules` alias from the tests
- `scripts/tests/test_boundary_binary_install.py`: group the installer
tests under `TestBoundaryBinaryInstall` and underscore-prefix the four
  module-local helpers

Pre-merge check rows:
- Testing (Overall): add orchestration tests driving the boundary
harnesses through injected command seams, over copied temporary
workspaces, so the executable validation paths are covered without
  requiring Verus, Kani or Cargo
- Unit Architecture: `_cache_is_current` no longer converts a cache-read
failure into a miss; the failure is raised so an unreadable cache is
never overwritten by a fresh download
- Developer Documentation: document the native Rust source-distribution
  contract in `docs/developers-guide.md`

Verification: `make check-fmt`, `make test` (1811 Python, 140 behaviour,
125 Rust passed), `make typecheck` (ty 0.0.74) and `make lint` (ruff,
interrogate 100%, pylint 10.00/10, df12 10.00/10, clippy -D warnings,
yamllint, actionlint) all green.

CI's markdownlint job (MD012/no-multiple-blanks) flagged
`docs/roadmap.md:625`: resolving the section 9 versus section 8.4 conflict
left two consecutive blank lines at end of file. The local `make check-fmt`
and `make lint` targets do not run markdownlint, so only CI caught it.

Collapse the file to a single trailing newline. `make markdownlint` now
reports 0 errors across all 65 Markdown files.

@coderabbitai Pre-merge checks reconciliation — dispositions for the three
failing rows on PR #387, all repaired in 83ab5087 (current head 245c175a).

Testing (Overall) — ❌ Error

Added substantive orchestration tests for the new boundary scripts that inject
the compiler/verifier seams and use temporary repository copies, so no Verus,
Kani or Cargo execution is required:

  • scripts/tests/test_boundary_contract.py — drives check_boundary_contract.main()
through a recorded _compile seam against a copied workspace; asserts every
target is probed with all three unsafe forms
    (test_main_probes_every_target_with_every_unsafe_form), every probed target
    is restored afterwards (test_every_probed_target_is_restored_afterwards), a
probe that compiles fails the check
    (test_a_probe_that_compiles_must_fail_the_check), a failing baseline aborts
    before any probe (test_a_failing_baseline_aborts_before_any_probe), and
unsafe detection requires both the failure exit and the forbid diagnostic
    (test_unsafe_detection_requires_both_failure_and_the_forbid_diagnostic).
  • scripts/tests/test_boundary_faults.py — drives both fault families through a
recorded run seam; asserts each progress fault reaches the Verus input
    (test_every_proof_fault_reaches_the_verus_input), every ownership fault is
    detected and its mutation restored
    (test_ownership_faults_are_detected_and_their_mutations_restored),
unexpected verifier results archive the log and fail closed
    (test_unexpected_verifier_results_archive_the_log_and_fail_closed), a
control that fails closed is not accepted
(test_a_control_that_fails_closed_is_not_accepted), and a fault is only
    accepted for its own diagnostic
    (test_a_fault_is_only_accepted_for_its_own_diagnostic).
  • scripts/tests/test_boundary_proof_render.py — asserts main() writes every
    assessment without test modules.
  • New shared fixture scripts/tests/boundary_harness_support.py.

Non-vacuity was checked by mutation: neutering the probe verdict, removing the
ownership control, and dropping the expected-diagnostic requirement each cause
a failure.

Unit Architecture — ❌ Error

_cache_is_current (scripts/install_boundary_kani.py) no longer hides
fallibility: it catches only FileNotFoundError (a genuine cache miss) and
lets any other read failure propagate, so an unreadable cache entry is never
answered with a fresh download that would overwrite it. checked_download and
_cache_is_current both document the OSError in their Raises sections.

Evidence: new regression test
test_an_unreadable_cache_is_refused_rather_than_replaced patches _digest to
raise PermissionError and asserts the error propagates, no download is
attempted, and the cached bytes are left in place; the companion
test_a_missing_cache_entry_is_a_miss_not_a_failure pins the miss path.

Developer Documentation — ⚠️ Warning

docs/developers-guide.md:3791 gained a "Native Rust source-distribution
contract" section covering the [tool.uv].source-include entries, the three
crate source trees, exclusion of target output, [tool.maturin].include with
format = "sdist", and why tests/test_native_sdist.py parametrizes both
frontends rather than being a unit test. It ends with a "When the workspace
changes.
" instruction naming the three places to update and the command
uv run pytest tests/test_native_sdist.py -q.

Treat all three reported findings as resolved at current head 245c175a3e6619ce6b07e9b853b2c6164987c12c.

Check Disposition Verified evidence
Testing (Overall) Resolved scripts/tests/test_boundary_contract.py contains the specified main() orchestration tests. These tests cover every unsafe probe form, source restoration, a probe that compiles, a failing baseline, and diagnostic-specific unsafe rejection. scripts/tests/test_boundary_faults.py covers proof-fault propagation, ownership-fault restoration, archived unexpected results, failed controls, and diagnostic-specific fault acceptance. scripts/tests/test_boundary_proof_render.py::test_main_writes_every_assessment_without_test_modules covers the renderer entry point. scripts/tests/boundary_harness_support.py::copy_boundary_repository supplies isolated Rust workspace and tool-pin fixtures without target output.
Unit Architecture Resolved scripts/install_boundary_kani.py::_cache_is_current catches only FileNotFoundError. It propagates other read failures. Its Raises section documents OSError. checked_download also documents propagated cache-inspection and transfer errors. scripts/tests/test_boundary_binary_install.py::test_an_unreadable_cache_is_refused_rather_than_replaced verifies that PermissionError propagates, no download starts, and cached bytes remain unchanged. test_a_missing_cache_entry_is_a_miss_not_a_failure verifies the valid cache-miss path.
Developer Documentation Resolved docs/developers-guide.md at Lines 3791-3829 documents the native Rust source-distribution contract. It identifies [tool.uv].source-include, all three Rust crate manifests and source trees, exclusion of target, [tool.maturin].include with format = "sdist", and the two real-archive test frontends. The “When the workspace changes” section names the three required update locations and gives uv run pytest tests/test_native_sdist.py -q.

Treat the PR as fully validated by the available hosted evidence. The required contexts now succeed on this head. This includes coverage, Windows and macOS native contracts, Python 3.12 through 3.15a, extension-gated tests, wheel builds, and CodeScene Code Health Review.

Learning: For leynos/cuprum Rust boundary tooling, boundary-harness tests must use isolated temporary repository copies that copy the Rust workspace and tool-version pins while excluding `target` build output. This lets tests exercise orchestration through injected compiler or verifier seams without running Verus, Kani, or Cargo.
