**nitpick (testing):** The contract test counts the literal `#[rustfmt::skip]` text anywhere in each Rust file, including comments and string literals, while `observed` only records regex matches for the exact fixture pattern. A Rust comment or embedded example containing that attribute text therefore makes the test fail with `each rustfmt skip must apply directly to one rstest fixture` even though no additional formatter skip exists.
**Triggers:** When a Rust source file documents or embeds the `#[rustfmt::skip]` spelling outside an actual attribute.
**Suggested fix:** Count and validate parsed attribute occurrences, or restrict the scan to non-comment source tokens instead of using `source.count(...)`.
```suggestion
skip_count += len(matches)
Keep `descriptor_guard` in the only rustfmt form that Rust 1.85 and rstest 0.26 compile with warnings denied. Extend the focused formatter contract to enumerate each verified fixture exception. This is a prerequisite for the configured Rustfmt profile; it changes neither that profile nor the lint policy.
Record the pinned formatter and rstest incompatibility, its three approved fixture skips, the removal condition, and the contract update rule. This keeps the formatter exception auditable without broadening it.
Rewrite the skip scan so every `#[rustfmt::skip]` occurrence is validated against its own immediate context, rather than comparing a file-wide literal count against a separately collected set of regex matches. The previous formulation derived its guarantee from two unequal populations: a raw `str.count` of the attribute text, and regex matches requiring the attribute to be immediately followed by `#[fixture]` and `fn <name>`. Because the count was text-blind, attribute text appearing in a comment, a string literal, or a generated file under `rust/target/` could fail the guard while diagnosing nothing. Collapsing the count to `len(matches)` would have removed that false positive but also the true-positive coverage, since a skip on a non-fixture item would then no longer be counted at all. Validating each occurrence in place preserves the documented guarantee and improves the diagnostic: a violation now names the offending file and line instead of reporting an aggregate mismatch. Verified by probe that a skip on a non-fixture item and stray attribute text both fail, and that the approved three-fixture set passes. Also state the skip-removal sequence explicitly in the developers' guide: format with the pinned formatter first, then compile the formatted `rstest` fixture with Rust 1.85.0 and warnings denied, removing a skip only when no `unused_braces` diagnostic is reported.
The formatter exception contract matched `#[rustfmt::skip]` anywhere in a Rust source file, so the same attribute text inside a comment or a string literal failed the guard while diagnosing nothing. Blank comments, character literals, and string literals before matching, preserving each lexeme's length and embedded newlines so the surviving code keeps its original offsets. Per-occurrence validation is unchanged: every real `#[rustfmt::skip]` must still apply directly to one approved `rstest` fixture, and a violation is reported with its file and line.
Rust block comments nest, so the previous `/\*.*?\*/` alternative stopped at the first `*/`. Attribute text after an inner comment but still inside the outer comment was therefore left exposed and matched, recreating the false positive the blanking pass exists to prevent. Replace the regex alternative with a nesting-aware scanner. Block comments now track depth to the `*/` that closes the outermost comment, with an unterminated comment consuming the remainder of the file. String literals, raw string literals with any hash count, and line comments keep their regex arms, and character literals are no longer special-cased: they cannot span an attribute, because a Rust character literal contains no whitespace and the attribute's `#` followed by `[` is never blanked, so a char-literal-looking text can only expose more code rather than hide a real skip. Offsets and newlines are still preserved, so `_line_number` diagnostics remain accurate. Detection is unchanged: the three approved fixtures are still found and a non-fixture skip still fails.
The repository's spelling gate rejects the British form in prose and docstrings, so the `_try_lexeme` docstring now reads "Recognizes". Also record in the maintainer guide that the source contract blanks comments and literals before matching and tracks block-comment nesting, while still locating a non-fixture skip by file and line.
The raw-string arm of `_RUST_LEXEME` allowed its closing delimiter to carry zero hashes, so `r#"prefix" #[rustfmt::skip] suffix"#` closed at the internal quote and exposed the attribute to `_RUSTFMT_SKIP_FINDER`. The scanner now repeats the opener's exact hash count in the terminator, so only a delimiter matching the opener can close a raw literal. Each lexeme kind moves to its own scanner, collected in `_LEXEME_SCANNERS`. `_try_lexeme` drops from a cyclomatic complexity of 9 with nesting depth 5 to 4 and 2, clearing the CodeScene Complex Method, Bumpy Road Ahead, and Deep Nested Complexity markers. The extracted scanners measure 2-5 at depth 0-2. Recognizing character literals also closes a pre-existing false negative. Without that arm a quoted character desynchronized the scan: `let c = '\"';` opened a plain string that swallowed the following real `#[rustfmt::skip]`, so the contract silently stopped enforcing. Detection is unchanged elsewhere; the three approved fixtures are still found, an attribute on a non-fixture item still fails, and blanking still preserves file length and offsets so diagnostics keep their file and line.
The maintainer guide records the pinned formatter and
rstestcompatibilityconstraint, the three approved direct fixture skips, their removal condition,
and the update rule. Remove a skip when the pinned formatter formats the source
first and Rust 1.85.0 then compiles the formatted fixture with warnings denied,
reporting no
unused_bracesdiagnostic. Any new skip must first reproduce thatincompatibility and update the exact-set source contract, which is the mutation
proof.
The contract now validates each
#[rustfmt::skip]occurrence against its ownimmediate context, and blanks Rust comments and literals before matching. It
previously compared a file-wide
str.countof the attribute text against aseparately collected set of regex matches, so attribute text appearing in a
comment, a string literal, or a generated file under
rust/target/could failthe guard while diagnosing nothing. Blanking is length- and newline-preserving,
so surviving code keeps its original offsets and a violation is still reported
with its file and line.
Each lexeme is delimited by its own rules rather than one alternation. Block
comments track nesting depth to the
*/that closes the outermost comment,because Rust block comments nest and a first-terminator regex stops at the inner
*/. A raw string closes only on the exact hash count from its opener, so aliteral such as
r#"prefix" #[rustfmt::skip] suffix"#cannot be closed early byan internal quote. A character literal is recognized before a plain string, so a
quoted character does not desynchronize the scan. An unterminated block comment
or raw literal consumes the remainder, which hides text rather than exposing it.
Detection is unchanged: the three approved fixtures are still found and an
attribute on a non-fixture item still fails.
