Summary

This layer makes Cuprum's supported Linux debug route explicit: standard Make
build, test, typecheck, and lint commands select the development fragment for
the pinned dev-fast nightly, Cranelift, and mold. Coverage, release,
verification, MSRV, Whitaker, and non-Linux paths remain outside that route.
Direct Cargo use remains caller-configured.

It is the second surviving layer of the stack, now based directly on main
after PR #409 squash-merged, and
followed by PR #406.

The layer inherits PR #412's
intentional floating TYPOS_CONFIG_BUILDER_VERSION ?= v0.1.2 tag through its
base. The builder derives generated spelling configuration from the local
semantic input; this branch does not restore a SHA pin, digest fixture, or
legacy generator rollout tests.

Stack and replay

The branch is rebased directly onto main at
3885c5acdb7ee7c9a44b6506cac726d39c2fa821, and the head under review is
cd7c851a8208e24bbc064ff60faaf7ae1ad0aa8f. The replay boundary is that
target: the twelve commits below are the whole branch-owned series, and
git rev-list --merges over the range is empty.

  1. 8f19f828 Route debug builds through dev-fast
  2. 13c33539 Fix dev-fast hosted verification
  3. ce835f8a Strengthen dev-fast routing contracts
  4. 5e47c94b Fix dev-fast gate regressions
  5. 20123640 Require the dev-fast nightly Clippy in the prerequisite gate
  6. d376683e Drop vacuous dev-fast test assertions and dead test state
  7. 03479583 Document the dev-fast nightly Clippy prerequisite
  8. 9ff60a95 Fix the nightly Clippy needless_continue in fd_is_open
  9. 327e86c1 Cover the prerequisite tests' new linker fixture forms
  10. 8223a660 Group the prerequisite failure scenarios into one case object
  11. 9613e814 Fix the dev-fast Cargo fragment as repository state
  12. cd7c851a Collapse the adapter's duplicated invocation helpers

The replay preserved the inherited dev-fast commits and added the commits
addressing the review feedback below. Two conflicts arose in the Makefile
.PHONY list, where main reflowed the list and added makeutil and
skylos-allow while this branch appended its dev-fast targets. Both were
resolved as the union: main's reflow and additions retained, with the
dev-fast targets and msrv-check appended.

Commits 8 and 9 repair latent failures the gating run exposed once the
rebase made this branch the first to route lint through the dev-fast
nightly. Neither is a rebase artefact: the offending code in commit 8 is
still present on main verbatim, and the uncovered spelling forms in
commit 9 were introduced by commit 5 after the allow-list did not yet exist.

Commits 11 and 12 answer the third review round: the first makes the routed
Cargo fragment repository-fixed state rather than a caller-settable variable,
and the second removes a code duplication the first round's tests introduced.
Both are described under "Third review round" below.

Independent audit of the rebased result: the 53 paths that only main
changed are byte-identical at head to their target versions; every deletion
against the target maps to an intended change from this branch (verified
line-by-line against main's own edits); and no multi-line block is newly
repeated. The repeat scan covers the 16 changed files that exist on both
sides, which is where duplication could actually be introduced; the other 11
changed paths are new files, so every block in them is new by construction.

Review dispositions

CodeRabbit discussion Disposition and evidence
4033426057 Corrected the AGENTS wording for the dev-fast nightly in ce835f8a.
4033426077 Documented the four narrow Ruff subprocess suppressions around fixed Make argv and environment invocation in ce835f8a; Ruff and routing contracts pass.
4033426084 Added specific assertion messages in ce835f8a and the remaining action-test messages in 5e47c94b; DF12 and action tests pass.
4033426091 The routing contract explicitly forces DEV_FAST_HOST_IS_LINUX=yes in ce835f8a.
4033426106 Prerequisite contracts assert the expected diagnostics in ce835f8a.
4033426115 The required mold version is derived from tools/mold/VERSION and tested in ce835f8a.
4033426132 Test RUSTFLAGS retain -Clink-arg=-fuse-ld=mold in ce835f8a, with a routing contract.
4033426171 Corrected fragment/tool ownership wording and updated the fragment digest in ce835f8a.

Second review round

Each finding was verified against the current code before acting. The fixes
in this round are 20123640, d376683e, and 03479583; the fd_is_open
repair below is 9ff60a95.

Finding Disposition
MOLD_VERSION in the contract tests Moved to a fixture in the prerequisite tests, which read the same pin; the copy in the contract tests was genuinely unused and was removed.
Developer-guide wording on direct Cargo invocations Corrected. The fragment is not auto-discovered, so it cannot select a toolchain; the guide no longer implies a repository-selected default or that --config selects one.
msrv-check missing from .PHONY Added; it was the only one of the Makefile's targets absent from the list.
The prerequisite gate must require the nightly clippy Confirmed: rust-lint runs Clippy through the dev-fast nightly, CI installs the component, but the local gate checked only the Cranelift backend. make dev-fast-check now verifies every component in DEV_FAST_REQUIRED_COMPONENTS.
Duplicate TYPE_CHECKING block in test_dev_fast_contract.py Removed; it re-imported collections.abc a second time.
test_fragment_digest_rejects_content_mutation Removed as vacuous — it could only fail on a SHA-256 second preimage. The surviving digest test hashes the on-disk fragment against the reviewed pin.

The final gate remediation uses content-context-scoped mold patterns in
typos.local.toml, regenerated through the floating builder. It does not claim
path scope or accept mold as a general dictionary word: source contexts
pass while an ordinary-prose negative probe fails as intended. The updated
action tests use focused Syrupy snapshots together with semantic assertions.

Gate repairs

The first full gating run on the rebased head failed make lint twice, each
time exposing a latent failure that the previous failure had masked. A third
finding came from CI after publication. All three are fixed in the commits
below rather than suppressed.

Failure Cause Fix
clippy::needless_continue in cuprum-native-io's fd_is_open Routing rust-lint through the dev-fast nightly promotes Clippy's pedantic group to an error under the existing -D warnings. The code was byte-identical to main, last touched in #387; the 1.85 Clippy accepted it. 9ff60a95 drops the redundant continue — the match already ends the loop body, so the EINTR arm falls through to the next observation exactly as before. No #[allow]: the workspace denies allow_attributes_without_reason.
mold → mould in the prerequisite tests Commit 5 added the mold_version fixture and the mold {version} / mold {mold_version} placeholders after the mold allow-list was written, so the typos gate flagged the bare word 14 times. 327e86c1 adds three narrow, content-context patterns and regenerates the tracked config. Ordinary prose still fails: a scratch file containing "mold growing on the bread" is flagged, so the word is not accepted as a dictionary entry.
CodeScene Excess Number of Function Arguments in the prerequisite tests main does not carry test_dev_fast_prerequisites.py, so CodeScene scores the whole file as new code. Commit 5 added the mold_version fixture as a fifth parameter to the failure test, one past the four arguments the check tolerated when the branch last passed it. 8223a660 folds the three cohesive scenario fields into a frozen _FailureCase NamedTuple, the shape the generated-invariant tests already use for grouped case data. The scenario ids and bodies are unchanged; the method takes three arguments.

The Clippy and spelling failures would both have failed CI's lint-test job,
which runs make lint after installing the dev-fast prerequisites. The
CodeScene finding is external and unreproducible locally; it is addressed
structurally rather than by a .codescene rule override.

Third review round

CodeRabbit's third pass confirmed the fix and asked for the gate reruns. Two
findings arrived from the bot reviewers after the second round, and one from
CodeScene's check on the new head.

Finding Disposition
The routed Cargo fragment is caller-overridable through DEV_FAST_CONFIG Confirmed and fixed in 9613e814. ?= supplies a default only, so an environment variable or command-line assignment replaced it, and dev-fast-check validated only that the replacement path existed. Both Make names are now override assignments, and the Maturin adapter derives the fragment from its own location instead of accepting it as input.
Duplicate functions _run_bridge / _run_bridge_relatively (CodeScene) Confirmed in cd7c851a. The two helpers wrapped the same subprocess.run call and differed only in the executable spelling; they are now one helper with a keyword-only path argument, and the one test needing both spellings is parametrized.

On the override requirement specifically: a plain := would have looked
correct while leaving a vector open, so the behaviour was checked against GNU
Make rather than assumed. With one override assignment and a ?= control in
the same makefile, an ordinary environment variable, an environment under
make -e, and a command-line variable all replaced the ?= value and all
left the override value unchanged. The command-line vector is why := alone
is insufficient. DEV_FAST_CONFIG_RELATIVE and the value derived from it are
both overrided, since the derived name is itself settable.

Validation

The gates below were run sequentially against this exact head
(cd7c851a8208e24bbc064ff60faaf7ae1ad0aa8f, tree
77bb08c2d023f5e29f12eb6985d13fb1dc433779), with a clean worktree, so the
results describe the committed tree:

gate result
make check-fmt 508 files already formatted; mdtablefix --check left 66 unchanged
make lint All checks passed!, including the spelling gate and actionlint
make markdownlint no errors
make typecheck ty 0.0.74 — All checks passed!
make test Rust by nextest: 125 run, 125 passed, 0 skipped; Python: 1917 passed / 60 skipped, 152, 70, 45, 20 passed / 13 skipped; all snapshots passed

CI is green on the same head across all 23 checks, including lint-test,
coverage, benchmark-ratchet, the four Typecheck and test jobs, Native contracts on three platforms, the wheel builds, and CodeScene Code Health Review (main). The remaining external coverage dependency is
shared-actions#496.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Toolchain and configuration contracts
.github/actions/setup-dev-fast/action.yml, rust/Cargo.toml, rust/*/Cargo.toml, tools/dev-fast/*, tools/mold/*, AGENTS.md
The workspace declares Rust 1.85.0. Linux development uses pinned nightly Rust, Cranelift, and mold through an explicit configuration fragment.
Make routing and Cargo adapter
Makefile, tools/dev-fast/cargo
Make targets select stable, MSRV, or Linux dev-fast commands. The Cargo adapter validates its environment, rejects duplicate configuration options, injects one approved configuration, and preserves Cargo arguments and exit status.
Prerequisite provisioning and CI wiring
.github/actions/setup-dev-fast/action.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml
CI installs the pinned Rust components and checksum-verified mold archive on Linux. Linux lint and extension jobs use the prerequisites, and lint CI runs make msrv-check.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Fail the testing check because the new test_fragment_digest_rejects_content_mutation is vacuous. It hashes the current fragment after appending fixed bytes and only asserts that this independently computed hash differs from a constant. Replacing the fragment with an empty or no-op file would still satisfy this assertion, as shown by the equivalent hash calculation. The adjacent test_fragment_is_the_approved_immutable_extension provides the meaningful fixed-digest oracle, and the other new adapter, routing, prerequisite, and action tests are substantive.

Resolution

Remove test_fragment_digest_rejects_content_mutation, or replace it with an assertion that validates the actual fragment against the approved digest. Retain the existing exact-digest test so that any fragment change fails through a meaningful product contract.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Document the changed Linux development workflow in docs/users-guide.md. The PR changes make develop, make test-rust, and make rust-lint to require the pinned nightly, Cranelift, and mold, and adds make dev-fast-check, make dev-build, and make dev-test. The user guide is unchanged and its source-build section only documents Rust 1.85+ and direct maturin develop; it contains no make, dev-fast, mold, or Cranelift guidance. The developers' guide does not satisfy the check because the required guide is docs/users-guide.md. The existing docs/migration-0.2.0.md also has no signpost for this changed contributor workflow.

Resolution

Update docs/users-guide.md in the native-extension build section. State the Linux-only dev-fast prerequisites, including nightly-2026-08-23, rustc-codegen-cranelift, mold 2.41.0, and checksum-verified setup. Document make dev-fast-check, make develop, make dev-build, and make dev-test. Distinguish these Make routes from direct maturin develop, and state the stable-backend behaviour on macOS and Windows plus the protected stable routes. Add a corresponding entry to docs/migration-0.2.0.md that explains the new prerequisites and the required command change for contributors who build the extension from source.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR makes Linux debug acceleration an explicit, fail-closed Makefile route using a pinned dev-fast nightly, Cranelift, an explicit Cargo configuration fragment, and checksum-verified mold, with a Maturin-compatible adapter and extensive contracts. Stable toolchains remain enforced for release, coverage, verification, MSRV, Whitaker, and non-Linux paths, while CI, documentation, spelling rules, and Rust compatibility metadata are updated accordingly.

value or expected count failed.

expected message appears in result.stderr.

In `@Makefile`:
- Line 42: Define a Linux-gated shared test RUSTFLAGS value near
DEV_FAST_TEST_COMMAND that preserves TEST_RUSTFLAGS and adds the mold linker
flag only on Linux, while leaving non-Linux values unchanged. Update both

test-rust routes to use this shared value instead of TEST_RUSTFLAGS.
- Line 41: Update the Makefile’s mold validation by deriving MOLD_VERSION from
tools/mold/VERSION and generating an escaped MOLD_VERSION_PATTERN for the
version check. Replace the hard-coded 2.41.0 values in DEV_FAST_CHECK_COMMAND’s
error messages and mold --version regex with these variables, while preserving
the existing validation flow.

In `@tools/dev-fast/config.toml`:
- Around line 10-12: Correct the ownership comment in the dev-fast configuration
to state that the nightly toolchain is pinned by the Makefile, while only the
mold release is pinned in tools/mold/VERSION. Update FRAGMENT_SHA256 in
test_dev_fast_contract.py to match the revised file contents.

**issue (broader_impact):** The supposedly approved immutable Cargo fragment is caller-overridable through `DEV_FAST_CONFIG`, and `dev-fast-check` validates only that the replacement path exists; a Make invocation can therefore route debug builds through an arbitrary configuration while all routing contracts still pass for the default path.

**Triggers:** When a caller supplies `DEV_FAST_CONFIG` to a standard debug target.

**Suggested fix:** Keep the approved fragment path fixed for the supported route, or validate both its repository-relative identity and SHA-256 digest before invoking Cargo.

**nitpick:** The `collections.abc` type alias is imported twice inside separate `TYPE_CHECKING` blocks; the duplicate declaration adds no runtime behavior but leaves redundant dead structure in the new contract test.

**Suggested fix:** Remove one of the duplicate `TYPE_CHECKING` blocks and retain a single `cabc` import.

@leynos You are correct. Treat this as maintainer documentation, not user-facing documentation.

Keep the dev-fast prerequisites in docs/developers-guide.md and ADR-012. Library consumers need the supported release-build instructions. They do not need documentation for internal Linux debug commands such as make develop, make test-rust, or make rust-lint.

Withdraw the docs/users-guide.md warning.

Select the approved nightly Cranelift configuration for compatible Linux
debug workflows while retaining stable routing for release, coverage,
verification, Whitaker, MSRV, and non-Linux builds.

Record the Rust 1.85.0 compatibility contract, provision the checked mold
binary in CI, and bind the routing and spelling-policy behaviour with local
contract tests.
Install Clippy with the pinned Linux development toolchain so the routed
lint gate can execute. Keep the scoped-writer compile-fail contract stable
on Rust 1.85 and the development nightly by using a local diagnostic anchor.
Exercise the composite action and adapter boundaries, preserve mold flags when Make sets RUSTFLAGS, and record the Linux-only routing decision.
Snapshot the action installation command contract, add assertion diagnostics, and regenerate the narrow linker spelling exceptions through the floating builder.
`rust-lint` runs `cargo doc` and `cargo clippy` under the dev-fast
nightly, but Clippy is a separate rustup component from
`rustc-codegen-cranelift`. `make dev-fast-check` verified only the
backend, so a host provisioned for builds but not linting passed the
gate and then failed inside `make rust-lint`.

Enumerate the required components in the Makefile and check every one of
them, and cover the missing-Clippy case in the prerequisite contract
tests.
Three pieces of review feedback on the dev-fast contract tests, all
verified before acting:

* `test_fragment_digest_rejects_content_mutation` could only fail on a
SHA-256 second preimage, so it asserted nothing about the fragment
contract. The surviving digest test hashes the on-disk fragment
against the reviewed pin, which is the real check.
* The module-level `MOLD_VERSION` read in the contract tests was unused;
the prerequisite tests already read the same pin through a fixture.
* A duplicated `if typ.TYPE_CHECKING:` block re-imported
  `collections.abc` a second time.

Also add the `msrv-check` target to `.PHONY`: it was the only one of the
Makefile's targets missing from the list, so a stray `msrv-check` file
in the working tree could suppress the recipe.
`make dev-fast-check` now requires the `clippy` component alongside
`rustc-codegen-cranelift`, and the developer guide described direct Cargo
invocations as retaining a repository-selected toolchain, which the
fragment cannot do: it is not auto-discovered, so passing `--config` does
not select a toolchain. Correct both statements in the developer guide
and the AGENTS.md toolchain bullet.
Routing rust-lint through the dev-fast nightly promotes Clippy's pedantic
group to an error under the existing -D warnings. The newer Clippy reports
the redundant `continue` in cuprum-native-io's fd_is_open retry arm, which
the 1.85 toolchain accepted; CI runs make lint after installing the dev-fast
prerequisites, so the branch's own route is what surfaces it.

Drop the `continue`: the match is the last expression of the loop body, so
the EINTR arm falls through to the next observation exactly as before. The
empty arm matches the existing Interrupted idiom in cuprum-streams.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The dev-fast prerequisite gate now names its version fixture `mold_version`
and templates diagnostics as `mold {version}` / `mold {mold_version}`. Those
forms entered after the allow-list was written, and the typos gate flags the
bare word each time, so `make lint` failed at its spelling step.

Add the three narrow, content-context patterns the doctrine here asks for —
each carries identifier or template syntax — and regenerate the tracked
config through the pinned builder. Ordinary prose still fails: a scratch file
containing "mold growing on the bread" is flagged, so the word is not
accepted as a dictionary entry.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeScene scores `test_dev_fast_prerequisites.py` as new code — `main`
does not carry the file — and its `Excess Number of Function Arguments`
biomarker fires on the parametrized failure test. The last review round
added the `mold_version` fixture as a fifth parameter, taking the method
one past the threshold the check tolerated at four.

Fold the three cohesive scenario fields into a frozen `_FailureCase`
`NamedTuple`, the same shape the generated-invariant tests already use for
grouped case data. The test keeps five ids and five scenario bodies
unchanged; only the grouping moves. The parameter list drops to three, so
the biomarker no longer matches while the parametrize table still reads as
the specification it is.

The fixture parameter stays: it is function-scoped setup the case data
cannot supply without re-reading the pin inline.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The routed dev-fast configuration was published as a caller-settable make
variable. `DEV_FAST_CONFIG ?= tools/dev-fast/config.toml` only supplies a
default, so an ordinary environment variable or a command-line assignment
replaced it, and `dev-fast-check` validated only that the replacement path
existed. A caller could therefore route the accelerated debug builds through
an unreviewed Cargo configuration while every routing test still passed,
because those tests exercise the default invocation. The Maturin adapter had
the same property: it honoured a caller-supplied path and described it as
"approved" without establishing any such thing.

This is a correctness and reproducibility defect rather than a security
boundary: a caller who controls the local `make` invocation can also change
the checkout. The project nonetheless claimed one fixed configuration for the
supported route while permitting another.

Make the fragment repository-fixed state:

- The Makefile derives it from one constant assigned with GNU Make's
`override` directive. Both the constant and the value derived from it are
overridden, because a plain or `?=` definition still yields to an
environment variable and any non-override definition yields to a
  command-line variable.
- `dev-fast-check` validates that fixed constant.
- `DEV_FAST_CARGO_COMMAND` and the direct Cargo routes consume the derived
value, so no caller-settable name reaches Cargo.
- The adapter derives the fragment from its own location instead of the
environment, and `DEVELOP_DEV_FAST_ENV` no longer passes it one. Its
missing-fragment diagnostic no longer asserts approval it cannot check.

The tests that asserted the adapter honours the variable are replaced by
tests asserting the opposite, including both delivery mechanisms for the
Make-level override and a relative-path invocation matching how Make actually
calls the adapter. A vacuous `missing_fragment` scenario is dropped: it could
only fail by redirecting a path that is no longer redirectable.

ADRs 012 and the developer guide record the boundary, and the guide no longer
implies the fragment is configurable.

@coderabbitai Thanks — your reading of the defect matches mine, and option 1 is what the branch now implements.

Makefile — the fragment is repository-fixed state. DEV_FAST_CONFIG ?= tools/dev-fast/config.toml is gone. It is replaced by:

override DEV_FAST_CONFIG_RELATIVE := tools/dev-fast/config.toml
override DEV_FAST_RUST_CONFIG := ../$(DEV_FAST_CONFIG_RELATIVE)

override is load-bearing here rather than stylistic, and I checked that empirically against GNU Make rather than assuming it. With a single override assignment and a plain ?= control in the same makefile, the same three override vectors were applied to both:

delivery override ?=
ordinary environment variable unchanged replaced
environment with make -e unchanged replaced
command-line variable unchanged replaced

The third row is why a plain := would not have been enough: it resists an inherited environment under -e, but not a command-line assignment, so make dev-build DEV_FAST_RUST_CONFIG=/tmp/other.toml would still have won. Both names are overridden, since the derived value is itself a name a caller could otherwise set directly. DEV_FAST_CHECK_COMMAND now tests the fixed relative constant, and DEV_FAST_CARGO_COMMAND consumes the derived value, so no caller-settable name reaches Cargo. No variable carries the selected configuration any more.

Maturin adapter — the variable is gone from its interface. tools/dev-fast/cargo no longer reads DEV_FAST_CONFIG at all; DEVELOP_DEV_FAST_ENV no longer passes it. It derives the fragment from its own location:

adapter_directory=$(cd -- "$(dirname -- "$0")" && pwd)
fragment="$adapter_directory/config.toml"

I chose to remove the input rather than validate it. The adapter is the process that must actually use the reviewed fragment, so a variable that redirected it would make the guarantee false rather than merely adjustable — and its previous diagnostic claimed "approved configuration file" for a path it had done nothing to approve. That wording is gone too.

Tests were inverted, not adjusted. The old tests asserted the adapter honours DEV_FAST_CONFIG; nothing asserts that now. test_bridge_ignores_a_caller_supplied_configuration offers both a real file in tmp_path (which defeats a bare -f existence guard) and a sibling path inside the repository (which defeats shadowing from within the checkout), and requires the adapter to ignore both. At the Make level, test_recipe_ignores_an_overridden_configuration covers both delivery mechanisms — command line and environment — and test_the_routed_fragment_path_cannot_be_overridden pins the override form in the source. One scenario was deleted as vacuous: it could only fail by redirecting a path that is no longer redirectable.

On the digest in your option 2: the fragment's SHA-256 is already pinned as FRAGMENT_SHA256 in cuprum/unittests/test_dev_fast_contract.py and is unchanged (8619efda…23a5) — the fragment bytes were never touched. That is integrity detection and it is a test-time contract, not a routing control, so it does not substitute for a fixed path. With option 1 in place it is defence in depth rather than the load-bearing check.

One note in fairness to the original design, since your write-up is otherwise exactly right: the shared premise is right that this is a correctness and reproducibility matter rather than a privilege boundary — a caller who controls make can already edit the checkout. The value of the fix is that the documented contract is now true of the implementation.

ADR-012 and docs/developers-guide.md record the boundary; the guide no longer implies the fragment is configurable.

Head is 9613e814b6fd74312311d65a845084b83f3ae563; gates (check-fmt, lint, markdownlint, typecheck, test) are being re-run on the current tree and I will confirm before the merge.

@pandalump The current head confirms the fix.

Keep DEV_FAST_CONFIG_RELATIVE and DEV_FAST_RUST_CONFIG as override variables. This prevents environment and command-line assignments from redirecting the standard Make route.

Keep the adapter-derived fragment path. tools/dev-fast/cargo no longer accepts DEV_FAST_CONFIG as an input.

Keep the focused tests. They cover both Make override delivery methods and both adapter redirection paths.

The documentation now matches the implementation. The dev-fast fragment is repository-fixed state, not caller input.

The reported gate reruns remain unverified until you provide their results.

Learning: In Cuprum's Linux dev-fast route, `tools/dev-fast/config.toml` is repository-fixed configuration. `Makefile` must use GNU Make `override` assignments for both `DEV_FAST_CONFIG_RELATIVE` and the derived `DEV_FAST_RUST_CONFIG`, because environment variables, `make -e`, and command-line variables can otherwise redirect Cargo. The `tools/dev-fast/cargo` Maturin adapter must derive its fragment from its own directory and must not accept `DEV_FAST_CONFIG` as an input. Tests must verify that caller-supplied configuration paths do not affect either route.

Learning: In Cuprum, documentation for the Linux-only dev-fast workflow, including `make develop`, `make test-rust`, `make rust-lint`, the pinned nightly toolchain, Cranelift, and mold, belongs in maintainer documentation such as `docs/developers-guide.md` and ADRs. Library-consumer documentation should cover supported release-build use only.

CodeScene flagged `_run_bridge` and `_run_bridge_relatively` as two functions
with similar structure. The duplication was real: both wrapped the same
`subprocess.run` call, differing only in the executable spelling.

Give `_run_bridge` a keyword-only `path` argument and fold the relative/absolute
choice into the one test that needs both. The parametrized case still launches
the adapter through each spelling in turn, so the `$0`-based resolution remains
covered in the form Make actually uses and in the absolute form.

The refactor did not degrade the coverage it replaced: `./tools/dev-fast/cargo`
and the absolute path are distinct strings, and both resolve.

@coderabbitai Thanks — here are the gate results you asked for, run against the tree under review.

Tree. cd7c851a8208e24bbc064ff60faaf7ae1ad0aa8f, tree 77bb08c2d023f5e29f12eb6985d13fb1dc433779; worktree clean, so the reported results belong to the committed tree rather than to scratch state.

Gates, run sequentially (make check-fmt, make lint, make markdownlint, make typecheck, make test — no two concurrent, so the shared build cache is used serially):

gate exit result
check-fmt 0 508 files already formatted; mdtablefix --check left 66 files unchanged
lint 0 All checks passed!, including the spelling gate and actionlint
markdownlint 0 no errors
typecheck 0 ty 0.0.74 — All checks passed!
test 0 Rust via nextest: 125 run, 125 passed, 0 skipped; Python: 1917 passed / 60 skipped, 152 passed, 70 passed, 45 passed, 20 passed / 13 skipped; all snapshots passed

The new tests were exercised in that run, which is the part worth checking, since a fix whose tests never execute proves nothing. Both parametrizations appear and pass:

  • test_bridge_resolves_its_fragment_from_either_invocation_form[relative] and [absolute]
  • test_bridge_ignores_a_caller_supplied_configuration
  • test_recipe_ignores_an_overridden_configuration[command_line] and [environment]
  • test_the_routed_fragment_path_cannot_be_overridden
  • test_the_adapter_environment_does_not_expose_the_configuration

One thing that changed after your reply, in the same direction: test test was 133s on this run versus 714s on the previous one. That is a warm Cargo/uv cache, not a short-circuit — the log shows the full nextest summary and every Python session's totals.

CI on the same head is green, including the previously failing check. CodeScene Code Health flagged the two adapter helpers as code duplication after my first push; I agreed, collapsed _run_bridge and _run_bridge_relatively into one helper with a keyword-only path argument, and kept the coverage by parametrizing the one test that needs both spellings. CodeScene now passes, and so do lint-test, coverage, benchmark-ratchet, all four Typecheck and test jobs, Native contracts on all three platforms, the wheel builds and verify-wheel-install.

Once coverage reports on this head I will post the approval.

Tip

For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@pandalump Treat the reported gate reruns as verified.

The clean worktree ties the results to commit cd7c851a8208e24bbc064ff60faaf7ae1ad0aa8f. The sequential local run passed formatting, linting, Markdown linting, type checking, and tests. The reported test names confirm that the immutable Make route and the adapter-derived fragment route both executed.

Treat the shorter make test duration as cache reuse. The complete nextest and Python session totals show that the test run did not short-circuit.

Treat the green CI results, including CodeScene and coverage, as confirmation that the helper consolidation preserved the adapter test coverage.

The previously unverified validation gates are now complete.
