Summary

This four-commit formatter layer applies the pinned nightly Rustfmt profile to
32 reviewed paths, while retaining byte-exact UI fixtures and all existing
runtime behaviour. PR #406 has merged, so this layer now targets main directly
and is no longer part of a stack.

The layer inherits PR #412's intentionally floating typos-config-builder
policy. It does not restore a builder SHA pin, digest fixture, or legacy
spelling generator.

Review walkthrough

  • Start with rust/.rustfmt.toml, which defines the Rustfmt profile and protects the byte-exact UI-fixture directory.
  • Review Makefile and the routing contract. Only fmt and check-fmt select nightly-2026-05-28; the negative-route assertions preserve the fragment-free lint, test, coverage, release, verification, MSRV, and Whitaker paths.
  • Inspect the mechanical Rust changes and the protected UI fixtures. No fixture output changed.
  • Finish with AGENTS.md and the developer guide. They distinguish Makefile-owned formatter-toolchain selection from Rustfmt-profile configuration, and both were reflowed through mdtablefix as part of the formatter layer.

Compatibility

  • Final head: 1abc7b2eb5ffa43c93c6b20b008adaba81a40321.
  • Base: main at fdfcebc387ac93e2b993185acf272d600cb80f05.
  • The four commits are: the mechanical formatter scope (profile, Makefile routing, AGENTS.md and developer-guide guidance, and the 27 Rust sources), the focused formatter-routing contract repair, the platform-aware dev-fast assertion, and the CodeScene-driven extraction of the two route assertions into named helpers.
  • Replay conflicts retained PR Adopt typos-config-builder gate for spelling #412's floating spelling-builder architecture, PR Route debug builds through dev-fast #410's dev-fast routing, and PR Preserve native formatter fixture #406's fixture prerequisite while applying this layer's formatter profile and mechanical output.
  • The layer's own AGENTS.md-only mdtablefix reflow commit replayed empty and was correctly absorbed into the formatter commit.
  • The base advanced repeatedly while this branch was under review, so the layer was replayed several times. Each replay was rehearsed in a scratch worktree first and validated with a git merge-tree oracle proving the rebased tree hash matches the rehearsal exactly, which rules out silent merge corruption.
  • An intermediate base advance replaced the regex lexeme matcher in the skip contract with a hand-written scanner recognizing nested block comments and raw strings by hash count. The conflict there was purely positional — the older _RUST_LEXEME regex this layer anchored after is gone, and _HOST_IS_LINUX now follows _LEXEME_STARTS. The scanner is kept intact and this layer's route constants and helpers are unchanged.
  • PR Preserve native formatter fixture #406 merged into main on 2026-09-19 and its branch was deleted, which retargeted this PR to main; the layer was then replayed onto main once more.

Validation

  • Full sequential gates passed on the final candidate: make check-fmt, make lint (pylint 10.00/10, clippy -D warnings, rustdoc -D warnings), make typecheck, make test (test-python 1922 passed / 60 skipped, test-rust 125 nextest passed), make markdownlint (0 errors), and make nixie.
  • make check-fmt is clean, including the files the base advances brought into the profile's scope (rust/cuprum-streams/src/buffer.rs and a lib_tests.rs string literal); cargo +nightly-2026-05-28 fmt --all -- --check reports no diff.
  • Formatter escape sweep: zero single-continuation escape-body signatures and zero trailing double-backslash signatures across reformatted Rust files.
  • The routing-contract fixes include mutation-proof positive formatter selection and negative non-formatter-route checks.
  • The dev-fast assertion is platform-aware. The Makefile routes debug work through dev-fast only when uname -s reports Linux and falls back to the bare injected Cargo elsewhere, so the contract requires the fragment on Linux and asserts its absence on every other host. Both branches were mutation-proved: the non-Linux branch asserts absence and passes, and the Linux branch still fails when the route is missing.
  • cuprum/unittests/test_concurrent_fail_fast.py::TestFailFastExecution::test_fail_fast_first_failure_indexes_correctly_when_earlier_cancelled failed once at elapsed < 1.0 (observed 1.166s). The file is not in this branch's change surface and is byte-identical to origin/main; the assertion bounds two real interpreter spawns, and the host was at load average ~39 on 24 cores during the run. It passes in isolation and on later full runs, so it is a load-sensitive flake rather than a branch defect.
  • #[cfg(windows)]-gated code in rust/cuprum-native-io/src/windows.rs was resolved on a conflict path the Linux gates cannot compile, so it was additionally cross-checked with cargo check --target x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings". CI's Windows extension-gated and macOS native-contract jobs also exercise the non-Linux branch of the dev-fast contract on real hosts.
  • CodeScene was unavailable locally. The external stacked coverage-parser limitation remains tracked in shared-actions #496.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Introduces a pinned nightly Rustfmt profile while keeping all non-formatting Rust workflows on their existing toolchains.
  • Adds nightly-only formatting options, including import grouping, wrapping, shorthand, and lowercase hexadecimal formatting.
  • Excludes byte-exact Rust UI fixtures from formatting.
  • Injects the nightly Cargo route only into fmt and check-fmt, with an overridable toolchain variable.
  • Documents the separation between formatting and stable build, test, lint, documentation, and Whitaker toolchains.
rust/.rustfmt.toml
Makefile
AGENTS.md
docs/developers-guide.md
Adds regression coverage for the formatter routing and preserves narrowly scoped fixture exceptions.
  • Adds a Make dry-run contract asserting both formatter targets select nightly-2026-05-28.
  • Asserts lint and test recipes do not use the formatter's nightly route.
  • Retains and contract-tests three known rustfmt-incompatible rstest fixture skips.
cuprum/unittests/test_rust_formatter_toolchain.py
Applies the pinned Rustfmt profile mechanically across ordinary Rust sources without changing behavior or UI fixture output.
  • Reflows comments and strings, groups imports, condenses simple functions, and normalizes hexadecimal literals.
  • Leaves the rust/cuprum-rust/tests/ui tree untouched because diagnostics are byte-exact.
  • Does not modify dependencies, Cargo metadata, public APIs, or fixture output.

leynos and others added 4 commits September 20, 2026 02:19
Route Rust formatting through the pinned nightly profile while retaining the
stable compiler for build, test, lint, documentation, and Whitaker work.
Keep byte-exact UI fixtures outside the formatter and constrain the known
rstest fixture exceptions through the formatter contract.
Require every lint and test Cargo recipe to stay off the formatter nightly
while retaining the Linux dev-fast route. Document that Makefile owns the
formatter toolchain pin and rustfmt.toml owns formatter behaviour.
The formatter contract required the Linux dev-fast Cargo fragment from
every lint and test recipe, but the Makefile routes debug work through
dev-fast only when `uname -s` reports Linux and falls back to the bare
injected Cargo elsewhere. The unconditional assertion therefore failed on
macOS and Windows hosts, where those recipes contain no fragment at all.

Branch on the host: require the fragment on Linux and assert its absence
everywhere else. Keep the formatter route and the formatter-nightly
rejection checks unconditional, since neither is platform-gated.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeScene scored `test_make_formatter_targets_select_the_pinned_nightly` at
10 against a threshold of 9: the host branch added last commit put the test
one decision point over the limit, and the reviewed code path is the test's
own control flow rather than production behaviour worth suppressing.

Move each per-target route check into a module-level helper that names what
it asserts. The test now reads as the three contracts it states -- the
formatter route is absent, the host-appropriate debug route is present or
absent, and each target expands at least one Cargo command -- and the
complexity moves into helpers small enough to stay under the threshold.

Both helper branches keep their mutation proofs: the non-Linux helper still
rejects a dev-fast line, and the Linux helper still rejects a fragment-free
one.

@coderabbitai Rebase evidence for the pending current-head CI disposition:

  • The PR now points at 12f5373fdfbe4c2c5f2c91e769b5b77091cb6563, rebased onto main at 50ecdf2a5ff51fb7230eec14fcf3f2d6eb623dd4.
  • The replay retained the four formatter commits without conflicts or empty commits; git range-diff matched every commit to the pre-rebase series.
  • Fresh local gates passed at this head: make check-fmt, make lint (including interrogate, Pylint 10.00/10, Rustdoc, Clippy, Whitaker and spelling), make typecheck, and make test (125 Rust nextest tests and the Python suites).
  • The documentation/toolchain finding and the non-Linux dev-fast assertion finding remain resolved. Their review threads are both marked resolved, and CodeRabbit explicitly confirmed the platform-aware assertion.
  • GitHub Actions for this new head are now running; I will wait for the completed current-head results before the final approval command.

This records the evidence for the existing comments only; it does not request another review.

@coderabbitai The current-head CI disposition is now complete for 12f5373fdfbe4c2c5f2c91e769b5b77091cb6563.

All required hosted checks passed, including lint-test, Python 3.12–3.15a, both extension-gated paths, native contracts on Linux, macOS, and Windows, every wheel build and installation, Verus, CodeScene, benchmark-ratchet, and coverage. The coverage job completed successfully in 9m1s: https://github.com/leynos/cuprum/actions/runs/35478992134/job/105993724679

Together with the two resolved inline threads, this closes the former pending CI disposition. Please confirm the existing actionable concerns are resolved; no further review is requested.

@pandalump Mark the former pending CI disposition as resolved.

Current-head evidence confirms that lint-test and coverage completed successfully. The strict interrogate gate passed at 100.0%. The coverage job reported 89.93% Python coverage. The Rust coverage ratchet also passed.

All required Python, extension, native-contract, wheel, Verus, CodeScene, and benchmark checks completed successfully. The only non-successful check runs were explicitly skipped non-required integrations.

No existing actionable concern remains from this disposition.
