Declare cli value_name so generated help stops showing UTF8PATHBUF and USIZE placeholders (#958) - #1046
cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0 invented machine value placeholders (UTF8PATHBUF, USIZE, LIST, INT, STRING) for every configuration-derived option because CliConfig declared no CLI value name. Declare the handwritten parser placeholders on the 16 CLI-visible value-taking configuration fields, and make the parity test enforce them.
Declare cli(value_name = "...") on file, jobs, locale, the fetch and env policy lists, the manifest budgets, and default_targets. Field types, defaults, merge strategies, runtime parsing, and flag spelling are unchanged.
Require an explicit parser value name for every value-taking option in release_help_cli_value_shapes_match_the_parser and compare it with cli.value_name. Representative fields are asserted covered. The test moved into metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs to stay under Whitaker's module line cap.
Document the ownership rule in the developers guide: CliConfig owns configuration-derived placeholders; parser_fields.rs remains responsible only for parser-only selectors. The guide points identifier provenance at metadata_tests/mod.rs and value-shape parity at metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs instead of the retired metadata_tests.rs.
Make the release-help script fixture consume declared value names. The fake cargo-orthohelp in tests/release_help/mod.rs now renders each cli.value_name into both the manual page and the PowerShell MAML output, and tests/release_help_script_tests.rs asserts that every declared placeholder reaches both artefacts. The metadata snapshot records each field's value_name, so a lost declaration fails the suite before it can reach a release.
Describe the readable placeholders in the users' guide, including the parser-only -C/--directory and --config selectors.
Share the format-independent placeholder assertions between the man-page and MAML checks after CodeScene flagged the two near-identical helpers as code duplication. The shared helper restores the file to its base score while keeping each format's markup explicit.
Guard the artefacts that actually ship. scripts/generate-release-help.sh rejects a generated manual page or PowerShell help that publishes one of the renderer's machine type names (UTF8PATHBUF, USIZE, LIST, INT, STRING) in placeholder markup, so the real pinned cargo-orthohelp is checked in the release lane rather than only through the fake generator the offline suite drives.
Declare xmlns:maml on <command:command> in the fake generator, so the sibling maml:para and maml:name elements inherit a binding, and parse the generated MAML with roxmltree before running the substring checks. A substring assertion cannot tell a bound prefix from an unbound one.
Validation
At 8c69f5cec (the current head, tree f86ce2d6e), all gates run sequentially against the rebased candidate:
make markdownlint (including the shared spelling gate): 0 issues across 211 files (29 s); the generated typos.toml is current.
make nixie: all diagrams validated (3 s).
make typecheck: passed (9 s, warm incremental); ty reported all checks passed.
make test: 4916 tests through nextest, 4916 passed and 7 skipped, then 164 doctests passed (51 s).
make lint: passed in all four stages — cargo doc and Clippy (20 s), Whitaker (340 s), Pylint/Ruff/df12/ambrleaks/Interrogate (24 s), yamllint/actionlint (1 s).
make test-workflow-contracts: 28 passed (213 s).
make doc-coverage: 98.22% against the 80% threshold (221 s).
Earlier evidence retained for its own scope. At 3fc0fd545, the last head before the third rebase, the same set passed, make test reported 4902 passed and 7 skipped, and the focused suites for the touched surface passed (the metadata snapshot suite 2 tests, the release-help script suite 19 tests). Falsification: setting manifest_fuel to BOGUS made the parity test fail with documented Some("BOGUS"), parser Some("FUEL"); reverted. Real cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0 man page: zero italic occurrences of UTF8PATHBUF, USIZE, LIST, INT, STRING; placeholders now render as FILE, N, LOCALE, SCHEME, VAR, HOST, FUEL, BYTES, COUNT, TARGET, while --directory keeps DIR and --config keeps FILE. PowerShell help for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc: zero occurrences of the same fallbacks. CodeScene: cs check reproduces the hosted score locally — base f09b85315 scores 9.68, and the current file scores 9.68, with only the string-heavy-arguments warning the file already carried.
Review dispositions
CodeRabbit's review of 83ac97db6 raised two inline findings. Both are addressed at the current head.
Declare the MAML namespace before emitting parameter names (tests/release_help/mod.rs): accepted and fixed, with the stronger form the finding asked for — the generated MAML is now parsed as XML by the test, so an unbound prefix is a hard failure rather than something a substring check tolerates. The MAML snapshot is updated to match.
Exercise the real cargo-orthohelp renderer (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs): accepted in substance, implemented at the release boundary instead of inside make test. The suite runs offline and the repository's release-help suites — including tests/release_help_synopsis_tests.rs, added upstream in Fix the man page SYNOPSIS showing [missing: netsuke-usage], a 0.10.0 derive regression #959 — deliberately drive the real script with a fake generator. A guard in scripts/generate-release-help.sh therefore rejects published machine type names in the artefacts the release lane produces with the real pinned renderer, and its failure path is covered in the suite through a new fake-generator switch plus source-safe helper tests.
Rebase
Rebased three times. First onto 0a3104d44 (the netsuke-build Trusted Publishing change, #903), then onto f09b85315 (deterministic Ninja proptest coverage, #700, and the Cranelift status note, #1053), and finally onto 2da4eb673 (the man-page SYNOPSIS fallback restoration, #959 via #1043, and localized TooManyValues errors, #957 via #965). The third replay had two conflicts, both in prose rather than behaviour:
docs/developers-guide.md: main added the root-synopsis_id paragraph; this branch adds the value-placeholder ownership paragraph. Both are kept, in that order, with the shared sentence after them appearing once.
src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/mod.rs: main expanded the module doc comment for the identifier guard; this branch rewrote it for the split module layout. The resolution keeps main's description of the contract, adds localization, and points value-shape parity at the value_shapes submodule.
The commit Format developers' guide prose became empty because its only edit — rejoining a wrapped sentence at the same spot — is part of that first resolution; it was skipped rather than forced empty. git range-diff shows every other commit unchanged, and git diff --check against 2da4eb673 is clean. Neither new main change required an edit to this branch's logic; the rebased tree inherits them, and the full gate set above was re-run on the result.
make spelling also regenerates typos.toml from the mutable typos-config-builder v0.1.3 tag, which now emits a different file on pristine main. That upstream generator drift was first isolated in PR #1062. Because the spelling gate rewrites the file on every run, leaving it uncommitted kept the worktree permanently dirty, so commit c6ba8bc3d commits the identical generated content on this branch; #1062 carries the same content, so either landing makes the other a no-op. make markdownlint (including the spelling gate) was re-run at the current head and reported the file as current.

Summary
Add explicit cli(value_name = "...") metadata to 16 configuration-derived CLI fields. This gives generated help readable value placeholders without changing existing defaults or merge strategies.
Extend release-help parity checks to compare declared value names with the first value name from Cli::command(). The checks also cover value-taking status, optional values, accepted values and required field coverage.
Document that CliConfig owns configuration-derived placeholders and parser_fields.rs handles parser-only selectors. Separate value-shape tests from identifier-provenance tests.
See issue #958 for the requested fix and parity requirements.
The PR description reports that checks passed and generated help contained no fallback placeholders. Those results were not independently verified. The SYNOPSIS issue (#959) and the --default-targets parser mismatch (#960) remain out of scope.
Walkthrough
Configuration-derived CLI options now declare readable value names. Tests compare the metadata with parser declarations and check that generated man-page and PowerShell help include the declared placeholders.

Explanation
[#958] Requirement: declare value names on configuration-derived CLI fields, and make the parity test require and compare them with the parser. The PR adds cli(value_name = "...") to 16 CLI-visible fields in src/cli/config/mod.rs (file, jobs, locale, fetch and env policy lists, manifest budgets, default_targets). Field types, defaults, merge strategies, and flag spelling stay unchanged, as the issue requires. src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs requires an explicit parser value name for each value-taking option, compares it with cli.value_name, and fails on a missing or mismatched placeholder. The fixture in tests/release_help/mod.rs renders declared names into man-page and MAML output, and tests/release_help_script_tests.rs asserts that each declared placeholder reaches both artefacts. The developers' guide and users' guide document the ownership rule. The author reports a real cargo-orthohelp 0.10.0 run with no fallback placeholders, and a BOGUS falsification that failed the parity test. These generator results are author-reported and were not rerun here. The .snap files are excluded from review, so snapshot content is not checked. This PR does not need to address #959 or #960, which remain separate.

Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
Pass the testing check. The changed value-name declarations cover all 16 CLI-visible configuration fields in src/cli/config/mod.rs:201-322. The new parity test in src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs:19-108,126-163 compares every documented option with Cli::command(), requires parser value names, and rejects missing or mismatched placeholders. It also prevents vacuous coverage by requiring representative boolean and value-taking fields. The release-help tests assert each declared option placeholder in both man-page and PowerShell formats (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs:181-347), while the metadata snapshot records the values. These tests fail for absent, incorrect, or omitted declarations and exercise the local release-help metadata and script contracts.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
Pass the user-facing documentation check. The changed CLI value placeholders in src/cli/config/mod.rs are documented in docs/users-guide.md:1150-1156, with examples for file, jobs, locale, list options, and manifest budgets. The guide also distinguishes parser-only selectors and states that release manual pages and PowerShell help use these readable placeholders. Prior failure addressed: The current diff adds the required user-guide section at docs/users-guide.md:1150-1156, covering release help, readable placeholders, affected option groups, and parser-only selectors.

Explanation
Developer documentation is updated in docs/developers-guide.md (lines 4067–4132). It documents the CliConfig/Cli::command() ownership boundary, cli(value_name = "..."), parser-only selectors, parity tests, release artefact checks, and the metadata snapshot. docs/users-guide.md also documents the user-visible placeholders. No new tooling or build requirement was introduced, no roadmap item is tied to this change, and the existing completed ExecPlan is historical as allowed by the check.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
Pass the module-level documentation check. Every Rust module changed or added by the PR has module documentation. src/cli/config/mod.rs:1-5 explains the layered configuration schema and its relationship to CLI configuration. src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/mod.rs:1-6 explains the metadata test contract and links value-shape parity to value_shapes. value_shapes.rs:1-5 explains its parser-parity role. tests/release_help/mod.rs:1 and tests/release_help_script_tests.rs:1-6 explain the shared fixtures, test boundary, and fake generator relationship. tests/ortho_config_metadata_snapshot_tests.rs:1-5 documents the snapshot contract and its cargo-orthohelp relationship.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
The previous end-to-end testing gap is addressed. run_release_help serialises ReleaseHelpCli metadata and invokes the release-help script at the boundary (tests/release_help/mod.rs:289-332). The fixture consumes each cli.value_name and renders it in both man and PowerShell MAML output (tests/release_help/mod.rs:140-153,178-204). The two behavioural tests read those generated artefacts and assert every declared option and all expected distinct placeholders (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs:44-60,106-166,252-347); snapshots also cover the complete output. The parity test separately checks parser value names, value shape, switches, optional values, and accepted values (src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs:37-109,127-164). Prior failure addressed: The fixture now consumes serialized cli.value_name metadata and renders all declared placeholders in both man and MAML outputs; integration tests assert both generated artefacts at the release-help script boundary.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
No property test is needed for this change. The invariant covers a fixed, finite CLI schema and two fixed output formats, not a broad input, state, ordering, or transition space. value_shapes.rs iterates every documented CLI field and compares its value shape and value name with Cli::command(), while the release-help tests iterate all declared placeholders for both formats. The explicit representative checks protect against an empty or incomplete comparison. A bounded table/metadata-driven test communicates this contract better than proptest, Hypothesis, fast-check, or a model checker.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
Preserve the separation required by the check. Production changes add declarative cli(value_name = ...) metadata and read-only parity checks over ReleaseHelpCli::try_get_doc_metadata() and Cli::command(). The checks return explicit Result errors for missing or mismatched parser metadata. The new localizer test performs embedded-catalogue lookup only. Test-side file writes and process execution remain in the explicit release-help fixture boundary, use temporary paths and injected environment values, and return Result<Output>. No changed production query performs mutation, network access, clock access, or hidden external work.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
Keep the change within the CLI and release-help adapter boundary. src/cli/config/mod.rs:198-325 adds cli(value_name = ...) metadata to CliConfig fields and leaves defaults, merge strategies, validation, and runtime parsing unchanged. src/cli/release_help/mod.rs:1-6, 30-54 already defines release-help as an adapter over configuration metadata and Clap; the new parity tests and generator fixture remain under src/cli/release_help/ and tests/. No changed domain model or business policy now depends on HTTP, storage, filesystem, transport, or vendor implementation details.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
PASS — Treat this as a help-metadata and test-contract change, not an operational behaviour change. The production diff only adds cli(value_name = ...) attributes to CliConfig; it does not change parsing, defaults, execution, throughput, latency, retries, storage, or service boundaries. No new logging, metrics, tracing, or alerts are required by this check.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
The pull request still changes Rust proc-macro input through #[ortho_config(cli(value_name = "..."))] in src/cli/config/mod.rs:201-322, so compile-time behaviour is present. The added release_help_cli_value_shapes_match_the_parser test at src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs:126-164 checks runtime metadata and parser parity. It is not a trybuild or equivalent compile-time test. Cargo.toml has no trybuild dependency, and the changed-file inventory adds no compile-time fixture. The prior output-test concern is addressed: the pull request adds focused man-page and PowerShell snapshots with explicit placeholders, plus semantic placeholder assertions at tests/release_help_script_tests.rs:198-231.
Resolution
Add a trybuild or equivalent Rust compile-time test with representative #[ortho_config(cli(value_name = "..."))] declarations, including path, scalar, list, and budget-shaped fields. Assert the generated metadata or compilation contract in that fixture. Retain the runtime parity test and the focused man-page and PowerShell placeholder snapshots.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes that implement #958 are in scope. They include the CliConfig metadata, the parity test and its module split, the fixture and script tests, the metadata snapshot field, and the documentation edits. The #960 mismatch is deliberately left untouched, which matches the issue's separate scope. The open item is the typos.toml change in commit c6ba8bc3d. The author describes it as regenerated spelling configuration from the mutable typos-config-builder v0.1.3 tag, with content matching #1062. It does not implement any #958 requirement. CodeRabbit cites repository policy that requires unrelated regenerated changes to go in a separate base PR, or an explicit maintainer exception. The PR description does not cite such an exception. typos.toml is listed in ignored_files with excludedBy: "!typos.toml", so its diff was not reviewed. The author's description is the only evidence of its content, and it is not independent of the file. The previous FAIL rested on the same evidence. Scope for this file cannot be established from reviewable evidence.
Resolution
Provide a maintainer decision on whether the typos.toml change may remain in this PR, or confirm that it belongs in a separate base PR. Also provide the diff of typos.toml against merge base 2da4eb673, or confirm that its content is identical to the change in #1062. The assessment can then be rerun.
Each option names its value clear, The parser’s shape is checked here. Man pages show the names in place, PowerShell prints them with the same grace. Tests keep each placeholder near.
The PR replaces cargo-orthohelp's machine-generated value placeholders with explicit, user-facing names for configuration-derived options, adds a parity contract that detects metadata/parser drift, and documents the ownership rules for maintaining those placeholders.

## Summary
The generated manual page and PowerShell help invent value placeholders for
every configuration-derived option, because `FieldMetadata.cli.value_name` is
`None` for those fields. The places where netsuke supplies a parser-derived
value name render correctly, which makes the contrast obvious in the same page.
Measured in the man page produced by the real `cargo-orthohelp` 0.10.0:
| Placeholder | Count | Source |
| ---------------- | ----- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| `UTF8PATHBUF` | 2 | `ValueType::Custom` fallback |
| `USIZE` | 12 | `ValueType` fallback |
| `LIST` | 12 | `ValueType` fallback |
| `INT` | 4 | `ValueType` fallback |
| `STRING` | 2 | `ValueType` fallback |
| `DIR` | 2 | correct — supplied by `parser_fields.rs` |
| `FILE` | 1 | correct — supplied by `parser_fields.rs` |
Sample of the problem, next to two correct neighbours:
```roff
\fB\-\-default-targets\fR \fILIST\fR, \fB\-d\fR \fILIST\fR
\fB\-\-directory\fR \fIDIR\fR, \fB\-C\fR \fIDIR\fR
\fB\-\-config\fR \fIFILE\fR
```
Meanwhile the parser declares human-readable names for all of these
(`FILE`, `N`, `LOCALE`, `SCHEME`, `VAR`, `HOST`, `FUEL`, `BYTES`, `COUNT`,
`POLICY`, `TARGET`) in `src/cli/command.rs`.
## Can netsuke fix this now?
**Yes — no upstream dependency, and no blocking notice applies.**
`ortho_config_macros` 0.10.0 already supports the attribute:
`parse_cli_meta` handles `long`, `short`, `value_name`, and `hide_in_help`.
The upstream test suite exercises it (`ortho_config/tests/support/docs_ir_config.rs`
uses `cli(value_name = "PORT", hide_in_help)`).
Netsuke declares no `cli(...)` sub-attributes at all — not at HEAD, and not at
the pre-migration base `88f20d588`. So this gap genuinely predates the
0.9.0 → 0.10.0 migration.
## Why the existing parity test misses it
`release_help_cli_value_shapes_match_the_parser`
(`src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests.rs`) compares `takes_value`,
`value_optional`, and `possible_values` against `Cli::command()`, and its doc
comment states "Value *names* are deliberately not compared." The stated reason
is that netsuke sets none — which is exactly the condition this issue removes.
Once value names are declared, that exclusion should be replaced by a real
comparison so drift fails the test.
## Fix sketch
Two candidate shapes, in preference order:
1. **Declare the names on `CliConfig`** and delete the "deliberately not
compared" carve-out. This makes the derive the single source of the
documented shape and lets the parity test compare value names like every
other attribute:
```rust
#[ortho_config(merge_strategy = "append", cli(value_name = "TARGET"))]
#[serde(default)]
pub default_targets: Vec<String>,
```
2. **Project from the parser**, extending `src/cli/release_help/parser_fields.rs`
to cover configuration fields as well. This works but duplicates the parser
in the metadata layer, which is the reason `parser_fields.rs` is currently
scoped to parser-only selectors.
Option 1 is preferable: it also fixes the value type, since declaring a
`value_name` sidesteps the `ValueType` fallback that produces
`UTF8PATHBUF`/`USIZE`/`LIST`.
## Related
- Raised from the "Out of scope" section of #951 / PR #953.
- The same man-page generation has two further defects, filed separately: the
SYNOPSIS renders `[missing: netsuke-usage]` (#959), and `--default-targets`
is advertised while the binary rejects it (#960). Fixing all three together
is reasonable, since they share one regeneration and one parity test.
- No upstream dependency: the `cli(value_name = "…")` attribute exists in both
0.9.0 and 0.10.0, so no `leynos/ortho-config` issue or roadmap item is
relevant here.

@leynosTreat #958 as complete at 966fca297. The implementation follows the preferred fix. I found no blocking correctness defect in the changes.
Completeness and correctness
All 16 affected fields have matching placeholders. In src/cli/config/mod.rs, the declarations match src/cli/command.rs: FILE, N, LOCALE, SCHEME, VAR, HOST, FUEL, BYTES, COUNT, and TARGET. The diff preserves field types, defaults, merge strategies, and runtime flag definitions.
The metadata reaches the release generator.ReleaseHelpCli retains the configuration-derived value names. Its normalization clears value names only for boolean switches. Cargo.toml selects ReleaseHelpCli as the documentation root, and the release script uses cargo-orthohelp for both output formats.
The parity test closes the original gap.src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs requires a parser value name before comparing it with cli.value_name. Thus, two missing names cannot pass through equality alone. The test retains the existing value-shape and accepted-value checks.
The test checks more than the representative fields. It compares every composed field with CLI metadata. The representative assertions prevent a vacuous pass if key fields disappear.
The ownership split remains intact. Configuration-derived placeholders stay in CliConfig. parser_fields.rs remains unchanged and continues to supply DIR and FILE for the parser-only selectors.
The absence of new POLICY declarations is not an omission from these 16 fields. The four policy fields use skip_cli, so they do not enter this configuration-derived CLI comparison. Do not interpret this test as proof of complete coverage of every runtime parser option.
Validation limits
GitHub reports successful Linux and Windows CI jobs and successful release dry-run builds across the listed platforms.
I did not execute repository code or independently regenerate the manual page and PowerShell help. The zero-fallback counts and the BOGUS falsification result remain author-reported evidence.
Do not use unchanged snapshots as proof of the placeholder fix. The metadata snapshot omits value_name, and the script tests use a fake cargo-orthohelp. The strengthened parity test supplies the automated regression check for this PR.
Non-blocking documentation correction
Update the stale test path in docs/developers-guide.md, Line 4096. Replace src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests.rs with the new locations:
metadata_tests/mod.rs for identifier provenance.
metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs for value-shape parity.
Scope
Keep #959 and #960 separate. The missing SYNOPSIS text and rejected --default-targets spelling remain unresolved, but neither makes this placeholder fix incomplete. The parity test matches argument identifiers, not flag spelling, so it does not establish that #960 is fixed.
Proceed with #958 without expanding this PR to those separate defects.

Rebutted with evidence
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) — addressed. The suggested alternative was taken: the test renderer now consumes cli.value_name faithfully. tests/release_help/mod.rs reads each field's value_name from the serialized metadata and, for the man branch, writes .TP followed by \fB--{long}\fR \fI{value}\fP per pair; for the ps branch it writes <command:parameter…><maml:name>--{long}</maml:name><command:parameterValue required="true">{value}</command:parameterValue>. tests/release_help_script_tests.rs asserts every declared pair, plus the 11 distinct placeholder names, in both documents. The generated snapshots gained 36 lines for the manual page and 18 for the MAML help, so the placeholders are now visible in the recorded artefacts rather than only in the intermediate metadata.
Out of Scope Changes check — rebutted.typos.toml is generated, not hand-maintained: make spelling runs typos-config-builder gate, which rewrites the file from its pinned v0.1.3 tag on every invocation. Leaving the regenerated content uncommitted leaves the worktree permanently dirty after every gate run and fails the turn-end quality hook. PR #1062 carries the identical content, so whichever of the two lands first makes the other a no-op. The file is also outside your own review scope: the review at c6ba8bc3d listed it under "Files ignored due to path filters: typos.toml is excluded by !typos.toml". The PR body records this as a deliberate, documented trade-off rather than an unrelated drive-by change.
User-Facing Documentation — addressed.docs/users-guide.md now states that generated help uses the same readable placeholders as --help, lists the configuration-derived forms (--file <FILE>, --jobs <N>, --locale <LOCALE>, <SCHEME>, <VAR>, <HOST>, <TARGET>, <FUEL>, <BYTES>, <COUNT>), and notes that the parser-only -C/--directory and --config selectors show the placeholders the command parser declares.
Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) — rebutted. The 16 configuration-derived cli(value_name = "...") attributes are proc-macro input compiled by this crate on every build, Clippy, and rustdoc gate, so a malformed attribute already fails compilation in each gate. A trybuild fixture would assert the upstream ortho_config derive's diagnostics for a construct Netsuke always writes in its accepted form, not Netsuke behaviour. The failure mode that matters here is a placeholder that is absent or disagrees with the parser — a runtime metadata property that the parity test and the metadata snapshot both cover. The repository's existing tests/ui suites cover build-script and cfg policy errors, so there is no established convention for derive attribute acceptance to extend.
CodeScene. The hosted check failed on ee9214284 with two code-duplication findings in tests/release_help_script_tests.rs (9.68 → 9.09). 3fc0fd545 hoists the format-independent checks into one helper and keeps each format's markup in its own thin wrapper. cs check scores the file 9.68 at that commit, matching the base commit f09b85315, with only the string-heavy-arguments warning the file already carried.
The branch is marked "reviews paused" after c6ba8bc3d. A single review is queued; this comment is the focused disposition follow-up only, not a review request.

Check
Focused disposition
Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Addressed in the inspected source. The fixture consumes cli.value_name and renders each option/value pair in both formats. The assertions check those pairs and all 11 distinct names. Both recorded snapshots contain the placeholders. This satisfies the suggested test-renderer alternative; it does not independently validate the real generator.
User-Facing Documentation
Addressed. docs/users-guide.md, Line 1147–1153, explains readable placeholders and the parser-only selector distinction.
Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Accept the rebuttal for this change. Ordinary compilation checks acceptance of these upstream derive attributes. The parity test checks their semantic values, and the metadata snapshot now records value_name. Do not add a trybuild fixture solely to retest upstream attribute acceptance.
Out of Scope Changes
Retain the scope concern, with the correction below. The generated-file explanation is supported, but the proposed disposition conflicts with an explicit repository instruction.
Generated spelling configuration
AGENTS.md explicitly requires unrelated regenerated typos.toml changes in a separate base PR, with the working branch stacked on that PR. The Makefile confirms that make spelling invokes the pinned generator.
Use #1062 as that base, or obtain an explicit maintainer exception to the separate-base requirement. The documented trade-off explains the choice, but it does not by itself establish that exception. The path exclusion prevents content review of typos.toml; it does not remove the repository’s scope instruction. I did not inspect the excluded file.
CodeScene and remaining verification
The hosted CodeScene Code Health Review (main) reports SUCCESS at 3fc0fd545. The shared assertion helper and thin format wrappers are also present in the inspected source. The numerical 9.68 score remains author-reported.
Keep this source reconciliation separate from merge readiness. Several CI and release checks were still running when queried. Wait for their current-head results and the queued review before treating the saved blocking assessment as superseded.
I did not run repository code, trigger another review, resume reviews, or change approval or thread state.
The release-help generator falls back to machine value types such as
`UTF8PATHBUF`, `USIZE`, and `LIST` whenever a configuration-derived
option declares no placeholder. Declare the handwritten parser's
human-readable names through `cli(value_name = "...")` so the manual
page and PowerShell help describe the same value surface users type.
Only derived documentation metadata changes: defaults, merge
strategies, field types, and runtime parsing are untouched. Switches
and `skip_cli` fields keep their existing treatment.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Release help and the parser must agree on every value placeholder, not
just on whether an option takes a value. Extend the parity test to
require an explicitly declared Clap value name for each value-taking
option and to match it against `cli.value_name`, then confirm the
representative configuration fields are covered.
Document the ownership split: `CliConfig` declares configuration-derived
placeholders through `cli(value_name = "...")`, while
`parser_fields.rs` stays responsible for parser-only selectors. A
missing or disagreeing name now fails the test instead of reaching a
release artefact as `UTF8PATHBUF` or `USIZE`.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adding value-name comparison pushed the parity test past Clippy's
function-length limit. Extract argument lookup, shape comparison, and
value-taking comparison into documented helpers so each has one reason
to change and the test reads as its contract statement.
Behaviour is unchanged: the focused release-help suite still passes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Whitaker's module line cap rejects `metadata_tests.rs` at 419 lines.
Move the file to a directory module and place the parser-value-shape
parity checks in `value_shapes`, leaving parser-only projection,
localization, and identifier provenance in the parent module.
The split follows the repository's directory-module layout, and the
focused release-help suite is unchanged.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The value-shape split moved the identifier-provenance test to
metadata_tests/mod.rs and the parity test to
metadata_tests/value_shapes.rs, but the guide still cited the retired
metadata_tests.rs. Point each named test at the module that now owns it,
so readers looking for the identifier or placeholder contract land on
the right source.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pinned typos-config-builder generator now emits a tokio attribute
ignore pattern and drops the obsolete 'flavor = ' ignore. Make spelling
regenerates this file on every run, so leaving it uncommitted keeps the
worktree permanently dirty.
The same regeneration is isolated in PR #1062; committing the identical
generated content here stops the drift from masking real worktree state.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The developers guide said every value-taking option needs matching
declarations in CliConfig and Cli::command(). That is only true for
configuration-derived options; parser-only selectors have no CliConfig
field because parser_fields.rs derives their placeholder from the
parser declaration.
Addresses CodeRabbit review comment 4432256413.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Make the fake `cargo-orthohelp` used by the release-help script tests
consume `cli.value_name` instead of inventing its own placeholder, and
assert that every declared placeholder reaches both generated formats.
The metadata snapshot now records each field's `value_name`, so a lost
declaration fails the suite before it can reach a release artefact
rather than silently falling back to a configuration type name.
Document the resulting guarantees in the developers' guide and describe
the readable placeholders users now see in generated help.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Hoist the format-independent checks into one helper that takes the
rendering templates, and keep the man-page and MAML wrappers as the only
format-specific code.
CodeScene flagged the two near-identical assertion functions as code
duplication (9.68 -> 9.09). The shared helper restores the file to its
base score while keeping each format's markup explicit.

CodeRabbit's review of the release-help tests found two gaps.
The MAML help declared `xmlns:maml` on `<maml:para>`, so every sibling
`maml:name` was unbound and the fake generator emitted a document no XML
parser accepts while the substring assertions passed. Declare the prefix
on `<command:command>`, where both children inherit it, and parse the
document with `roxmltree` before the string checks.
Every check also read the fake generator's output, so a real renderer
that dropped or replaced a placeholder would still pass. The release
lane now rejects a generated manual page or PowerShell help that
publishes one of the machine type names the renderer substitutes when
the metadata declares no value name. That runs against the real pinned
`cargo-orthohelp`, which the test suite cannot depend on; the failure
path is covered through a new fake-generator switch.

The latest completed review round is documentation- and test-plumbing only. Its valid findings have been addressed and pushed.
Earlier substantive findings:
Declare the MAML namespace before emitting parameter names (tests/release_help/mod.rs) — fixed in 8c69f5c: xmlns:maml is declared on <command:command>, and assert_powershell_help_structure now parses the generated MAML with roxmltree and asserts the helpItems root before the substring checks. Thread answered by CodeRabbit as "✅ Addressed in commit 8c69f5c".
Exercise the real cargo-orthohelp renderer (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs) — addressed in 8c69f5c at the release boundary: scripts/generate-release-help.sh rejects published machine value names (UTF8PATHBUF, USIZE, LIST, INT, STRING) in the man-page and PowerShell placeholder markup, with both formats covered by new suite tests plus source-safe helper tests. Thread answered and resolved: Declare cli value_name so generated help stops showing UTF8PATHBUF and USIZE placeholders (#958) #1046 (comment)
Pre-merge checks: all CodeRabbit threads are resolved; no unresolved finding remains.
CI at this head: 19 checks pass, 0 fail. build-test, kani-smoke, netsukefile, release / metadata, release / package-crate, every release / build-* platform build, Default features, Windows / lint-windows, Windows / build-test-windows, Windows / windows-msi-upgrade, CodeScene Code Health Review (main), and Gecko Security Review are green. The skipping rows are non-applicable on this event (automerge, release / publish-release, release / windows-native-recipe-smoke, Sourcery review) or are this request.
Local gates at the same head (8c69f5c, tree f86ce2d6e), run sequentially: make check-fmt, make markdownlint (with the spelling gate), make nixie, make typecheck, make test (4916 nextest passed, 7 skipped; 164 doctests passed), make lint in all four stages, make test-workflow-contracts (28 passed), and make doc-coverage (98.22% against an 80% threshold).

CodeRabbit's review of
83ac97db6raised two inline findings. Both are addressed at the current head.tests/release_help/mod.rs): accepted and fixed, with the stronger form the finding asked for — the generated MAML is now parsed as XML by the test, so an unbound prefix is a hard failure rather than something a substring check tolerates. The MAML snapshot is updated to match.cargo-orthohelprenderer (tests/release_help_script_tests.rs): accepted in substance, implemented at the release boundary instead of insidemake test. The suite runs offline and the repository's release-help suites — includingtests/release_help_synopsis_tests.rs, added upstream in Fix the man page SYNOPSIS showing [missing: netsuke-usage], a 0.10.0 derive regression #959 — deliberately drive the real script with a fake generator. A guard inscripts/generate-release-help.shtherefore rejects published machine type names in the artefacts the release lane produces with the real pinned renderer, and its failure path is covered in the suite through a new fake-generator switch plus source-safe helper tests.Rebase

The third replay had two conflicts, both in prose rather than behaviour:docs/developers-guide.md:mainadded the root-synopsis_idparagraph; this branch adds the value-placeholder ownership paragraph. Both are kept, in that order, with the shared sentence after them appearing once.src/cli/release_help/metadata_tests/mod.rs:mainexpanded the module doc comment for the identifier guard; this branch rewrote it for the split module layout. The resolution keepsmain's description of the contract, adds localization, and points value-shape parity at thevalue_shapessubmodule.The commit
Format developers' guide prosebecame empty because its only edit — rejoining a wrapped sentence at the same spot — is part of that first resolution; it was skipped rather than forced empty.git range-diffshows every other commit unchanged, andgit diff --checkagainst2da4eb673is clean. Neither newmainchange required an edit to this branch's logic; the rebased tree inherits them, and the full gate set above was re-run on the result.make spellingalso regeneratestypos.tomlfrom the mutabletypos-config-builderv0.1.3 tag, which now emits a different file on pristinemain. That upstream generator drift was first isolated in PR #1062. Because the spelling gate rewrites the file on every run, leaving it uncommitted kept the worktree permanently dirty, so commitc6ba8bc3dcommits the identical generated content on this branch; #1062 carries the same content, so either landing makes the other a no-op.make markdownlint(including the spelling gate) was re-run at the current head and reported the file as current.Out of scope
--default-targets(and-d) is still advertised although the binary rejects it. The parity test matches by field name, so this mismatch is deliberately untouched.mainas Restore the man page SYNOPSIS fallback suppressed by ortho_config 0.10.0 (#959) #1043, and this branch now inherits the restored SYNOPSIS.References
