Summary

This branch replaces the custom Merman release downloader with exact-version,
binary-only cargo-binstall installation. It preserves Nixie installation
through uv, deterministic version-specific cache reconciliation, executable
and version verification, Windows path handling, and PATH export. The
availability probe runs cargo binstall -V; the commit-pinned upstream
installer runs only when that command fails. Both Ty invocations continue to
use .venv.

Review walkthrough

Validation

  • git diff --check: passed.
  • Focused Install Nixie and typecheck-recipe tests: 43 passed.
  • make check-fmt: passed.
  • make test: passed, 4,536 passed, 158 skipped, and 15 snapshots passed.
  • make typecheck: passed, including both Ty invocations.
  • make lint: passed, including Ruff, action-validator, Whitaker, and Skylos.
  • make markdownlint: passed, 112 files and 0 errors.
  • make nixie: passed; all diagrams validated.
  • cargo-binstall 1.22.0 dry-runs with compilation disabled fetched Merman 0.7.0 prebuilt artefacts for Linux/X64, macOS/ARM64, macOS/X64, and Windows/X64; no files were installed.
  • Hosted validation: all 21 required checks passed; all applicable Actions runs are terminal with no failures; CodeScene approved this head.
  • CodeRabbit approved this exact head after confirming the credential-discovery fix and retaining the four reconciled pre-merge dispositions; all 10 review threads are resolved.

Notes

The action installs Merman with cargo-binstall 1.22.0, pinned through the
upstream action at full commit
8f137732cada3c067cb574fe3537fedfe2a6451d. It trusts cargo-binstall, crates.io
package metadata and checksums, and the binary source selected by
cargo-binstall. HTTPS is used and signatures are checked when supplied, but
unsigned binary artefacts are allowed. The action no longer verifies Merman
archives against locally pinned release digests; it verifies that the
executable runs and reports the requested version, which does not authenticate
the publisher or binary contents.

The supported target mappings are Linux/X64, macOS/ARM64, macOS/X64, and
Windows/X64. The dry-runs confirm Merman 0.7.0 artefact availability for those
target triples, but local execution validation ran on Linux only. The
network-independent behavioural tests do not claim to execute Merman or Nixie
on macOS or Windows.

Summary by Sourcery

Replace custom Merman release downloading with exact-version, prebuilt-only cargo-binstall installation while retaining deterministic cache reconciliation, Nixie setup, platform handling, and secure PATH and credential behavior.

New Features:

  • Install Merman CLI through exact-version, prebuilt-only cargo-binstall packages across the supported Linux, macOS, and Windows targets.
  • Authenticate cargo-binstall release lookups with a narrowly scoped job token while preventing credentials from reaching installed tools.

Bug Fixes:

  • Reconcile stale or unusable Merman cache entries using executable version checks and prevent PATH publication after failed installations.
  • Ensure rust-build-release references a setup-rust revision that safely handles restored uv script environments.
  • Run both Ty type-checking commands against the repository's .venv.

Enhancements:

  • Replace the custom Merman archive downloader, extraction logic, and pinned digest verification with cargo-binstall-based installation and runtime version validation.
  • Expand install-nixie behavioral coverage for probing, cache reconciliation, target selection, credential isolation, failures, and version validation.

Documentation:

  • Update Install Nixie user and developer documentation to describe cargo-binstall prerequisites, supported targets, cache behavior, and the revised trust model.
  • Record the Merman installation trust decision in ADR 0010.

Tests:

  • Add shared deterministic fixtures and scenario-based tests for cargo-binstall probing and Merman/Nixie installation behavior.
  • Update Makefile typecheck contract tests for explicit .venv usage and extend setup-rust reference checks for uv cache pruning.

Chores:

  • Update the Install Nixie changelog for binary-only cargo-binstall installation and runtime version verification.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR updates the install-nixie composite GitHub Action to conditionally install cargo-binstall via a pinned cargo-bins/cargo-binstall action only when it is not already present, and adjusts the corresponding tests to reflect the new multi-step workflow while preserving the existing Nixie/Merman install contract.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Add a conditional, pinned cargo-binstall installation step to the install-nixie composite action.
  • Introduce a bash step that probes for cargo-binstall availability and writes an installed flag to GITHUB_OUTPUT.
  • Add a follow-up step that runs the pinned cargo-bins/cargo-binstall action only when cargo-binstall is not already installed.
  • Ensure the existing Nixie and Merman CLI install step remains last and continues to use the same environment variables and inputs.
.github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml
Update install-nixie tests to account for the new preliminary steps and assert the manifest contract for cargo-binstall handling.
  • Relax the assumption that the composite action has a single step and instead treat the install script as the last step in the steps list.
  • Extend the manifest test to assert the exact structure and content of the new cargo-binstall probe and install steps, including their order, ids, shell, run script, conditional, and pinned uses value.
  • Update the environment assertion to reference the env of the final install step, which now resides at index 2 in the steps array.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 53 functions across 5 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Pass the testing check. Exercise the changed behaviour with substantive tests. tests/test_makefile_typecheck.py:50,88-102 now asserts uv run ty check --python .venv for both commands and preserves all path arguments. The Install Nixie tests execute the action's Bash fragments with isolated stubs and cover probing, pinned setup, exact versions, binary-only installation, cache repair, target mapping, token isolation, failure propagation, prerequisites, Nixie reconciliation, and PATH export (.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py:53-627). The Rust reference tests validate the pinned revision and both cache-pruning controls (.github/actions/rust-build-release/tests/test_setup_rust_reference.py:246-306). Prior failure addressed: tests/test_makefile_typecheck.py:50 includes --python .venv; lines 88-102 derive the prefix length and assert that prefix before both existing path lists. The shared contract also uses the updated prefix at workflow_scripts/tests/skylos_contract_support.py:83-90.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

Accept the documentation update. The reviewed range adds accepted ADR 0010, which records the cargo-binstall replacement, binary-only policy, exact version and target selection, cache checks, unsigned artefact policy, token scope, and trust boundary (docs/adr/0010-merman-binary-installation-trust.md:1-50). The developer's guide lists the ADR and documents the implementation and maintenance rules (docs/developers-guide.md:28-38, 2996-3054). The action README and users' guide describe the same installation, verification, authentication, and trust decisions (.github/actions/install-nixie/README.md:62-117, docs/users-guide.md:1576-1666). The guide also documents the changed .venv Ty resolution and uv-cache controls (docs/developers-guide.md:2845-2853, 3286-3293). No roadmap item or new execplan changed in the reviewed range. Prior failure addressed: Added and accepted ADR 0010, linked it in the developer guide's ADR index, and synchronized the developer, action, and users' documentation with the cargo-binstall trust and installation decision.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

All five changed Python modules carry module-level docstrings at line 1. The new install-nixie support module documents its fixtures, utility, and relationship to test_action.py (._github/actions/install-nixie/tests/_install_nixie_test_support.py:1-8). The other changed modules document their testing purpose and related component: test_action.py (line 1), test_setup_rust_reference.py (lines 1-7), tests/test_makefile_typecheck.py (line 1), and workflow_scripts/tests/skylos_contract_support.py (lines 1-15). The remaining changed files are configuration or documentation files, not modules requiring Python module docstrings.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

The prior property-test concern is addressed. The changed test suite now uses Hypothesis strategies for valid three-component numeric Merman versions and invalid forms, including leading zeroes, prefixes, suffixes, missing components and separators. Each generated value runs through the action harness. Valid values must reach cargo binstall unchanged at .github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py:358-373; invalid values must fail before installation and PATH export at :375-390. The existing parameterized boundary cases remain at :334-356 and :393-410. Hypothesis is declared in pyproject.toml:31-42. No explicit property-testing failure condition remains. Prior failure addressed: Added Hypothesis strategies and generated valid/invalid Merman-version tests in test_action.py:34-50 and :358-390. The tests assert unchanged forwarding for valid values and no install or PATH export for invalid values.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

Treat the check as passed. The reviewed diff contains no Rust or TypeScript files, so no trybuild or language-specific compile-time test applies. The changed GitHub Action is not UI output; its Python tests use focused semantic assertions for commands, exit codes, error text, token scope, cache reconciliation, and PATH contents (for example, head test_action.py lines 123-144, 270-287, and 453-466). No snapshot-based output contract is introduced or required.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

PASS — This pull request changes GitHub Actions and developer tooling, not core domain code. The repository identifies itself as a GitHub Actions collection (README.md:1-7, 8-40). The Merman version checks, runner-target mapping, Cargo/uv calls, cache handling, PATH export, and token scoping remain in the composite infrastructure adapter (.github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml:22-186). The added Python module is test-only support and explicitly states that production code must not import it (.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/_install_nixie_test_support.py:1-8). The Makefile and Rust action changes also concern type-check and cache infrastructure. No changed file introduces a domain model or makes domain logic depend on transport, persistence, filesystem, environment, or vendor details.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description directly matches the changeset. It explains the cargo-binstall migration, cache reconciliation, verification, platform handling, Ty configuration, tests, documentation, and validation results.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

The PR adds meaningful unit and stub-based behavioural coverage, but it does not add the required end-to-end coverage for the changed installation workflow. The tests extract shell fragments from action.yml (.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/_install_nixie_test_support.py:91-102) and execute them with deterministic Cargo, cargo-binstall, uv, Merman, and path stubs (.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/_install_nixie_test_support.py:132-226, 290-319). They do not invoke the composite action on a real runner or exercise the real release lookup, prebuilt Merman binary, Nixie installation, PATH execution, or cache reuse. The authoritative PR diff changes no workflow file. The existing CI workflow still installs Merman with install-tool and Nixie with direct uv tool install (.github/workflows/ci.yml:105-117), so it does not exercise .github/actions/install-nixie.

Resolution

Add a runner-backed end-to-end workflow for install-nixie with contents: read permission and the supported runner matrix. Verify the real Merman and Nixie executables, requested versions, PATH execution, and target selection. Add a second invocation or cache-restore job to verify real cache reuse. Retain the stub-based tests for deterministic error and token-isolation coverage.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Fail. The pull request adds Check cargo-binstall availability at .github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml:22-30. The query-labelled step runs cargo binstall -V and writes installed=true or installed=false to ${GITHUB_OUTPUT}. The next command reads that published state at line 32. This query therefore mutates externally visible GitHub Actions state. The changed tests at .github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py:162-187 and 190-246 explicitly require and exercise this boundary. The base action had no such step, so the failure is introduced by this pull request.

Resolution

Remove the state-mutating query boundary. Make the pinned cargo-bins/cargo-binstall setup unconditional, or move prerequisite detection and installation into one explicitly named command that owns the side-effect. Keep availability detection and state publication out of a read-labelled query path, then update the behavioural tests to verify the revised command boundary.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Add an Install Nixie migration document before release. The action introduces a Cargo and cargo-binstall prerequisite, pinned bootstrap, prebuilt-only Merman installation, new version and target rules, cache reconciliation, scoped token use, and Windows GITHUB_PATH handling (.github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml:22-161). The users' guide documents current behaviour (docs/users-guide.md:1576-1666) but does not provide or link an Install Nixie migration guide (docs/users-guide.md:9-35). The action changelog remains v1.0.0 (Unreleased) (.github/actions/install-nixie/CHANGELOG.md:3).

Resolution

Create an applicable next-release migration document for Install Nixie. Explain the Cargo and cargo-binstall prerequisite, pinned bootstrap, prebuilt-only installation, removal of local archive checksums, accepted versions and targets, cache reconciliation, failure conditions, token scope, and Windows GITHUB_PATH handling. Link it from the Install Nixie section or the related-document list in docs/users-guide.md before release.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

FAIL: The standing observability finding remains unresolved. The pull request adds cargo-binstall provisioning, version-scoped Merman cache reuse and repair, Merman installation and verification, Nixie repair, and PATH publication in .github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml:22-186. These paths emit notices and errors, but they emit no bounded terminal metric or step summary for success or failure. The only emit_metric implementation is the unchanged uv-cache metric in .github/scripts/prune_uv_cache.sh; it does not report Merman or Nixie outcomes. The changed behavioural tests assert calls, errors, and PATH state, but contain no metric or terminal-result assertions.

Resolution

Add a bounded emit_metric helper for Install Nixie. Emit exactly one terminal result for success and each failure boundary, including invalid input, unsupported target, missing prerequisite, cargo-binstall provisioning, cache repair, Merman installation, executable or version verification, Nixie installation, and PATH publication. Add failure reporting after the pinned cargo-binstall step. Keep versions, paths, command output, tokens, and other user-controlled strings out of metric values. Extend the behavioural tests to assert the allowed vocabulary and exactly one terminal result for every success and failure path.

Noting a reconciliation from #443, which adds an install-mdtablefix action that also has to obtain cargo-binstall. I am not closing this; that is the maintainer's call.

This branch's premise no longer holds. It adds the probe so install-nixie can use "the binary Merman installation path without rebuilding cargo-binstall", but install-nixie on main no longer uses cargo-binstall at all: #423 replaced that path with verified Merman release archives fetched over curl and checked against pinned digests. grep binstall .github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml on main returns nothing.

Two other parts have been overtaken:

So #443 does not build on this branch. It uses the same shape, a probe step that publishes an output and a uses: step conditioned on it, because a composite action cannot condition a uses: on a shell result any other way. It differs in the probe, pins a newer cargo-bins/cargo-binstall SHA (75b4bfae1b2c753a6806bbce6e6cb89b602de33c, v1.22.0) and forwards a validated binstall-version input, and annotates a failure of the upstream installer, which otherwise ends a composite run with no metric at all.

Neither branch extracts a reusable binstall-installation action. If one is wanted, it is worth doing once, on top of #443's probe, rather than reviving this.

@coderabbitai please assess the implementation in this PR for completeness and correctness against the stated functionality:

This branch adds a conditional, SHA-pinned `cargo-bins/cargo-binstall` setup
step to the Install Nixie action. It also directs both Ty typecheck
invocations to the project virtual environment so Ty can resolve declared
third-party dependencies.

## Review walkthrough

- Start with [.github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml](https://github.com/leynos/shared-actions/blob/use-cargo-bins-action/.github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml#L19) to review the availability probe, conditional installer call, and immutable action pin.
- Then review [.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test\_action.py](https://github.com/leynos/shared-actions/blob/use-cargo-bins-action/.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py#L322) for the manifest contract covering those steps.
- Finish with [Makefile](https://github.com/leynos/shared-actions/blob/use-cargo-bins-action/Makefile#L170) and [the typecheck contract](https://github.com/leynos/shared-actions/blob/use-cargo-bins-action/workflow_scripts/tests/skylos_contract_support.py#L83) to see Ty use the repository virtual environment for both checks.

## Validation

- `git diff --check origin/main...HEAD`: passed.
- `make check-fmt`: passed.
- `make test`: 4,149 passed, 154 skipped; doctests: 116 passed, 7 skipped.
- `make typecheck`: passed.
- `make lint`: passed.

@coderabbitai install-nixie should be using cargo-binstall, not hand-rolling its own installer.

Please provide a revised agent prompt to correct this, along with the remainder of your guidance:

- **If cargo-binstall setup remains required, replace the presence probe with a usability probe.**
At Line 23, `command -v cargo-binstall` proves only that command lookup succeeds. A broken executable or unusable shim still produces `installed=true` and skips installation.

Use an execution probe such as:

    ```shell
    if cargo binstall -V >/dev/null 2>&1; then
      echo "installed=true" >> "${GITHUB_OUTPUT}"
    else
      echo "installed=false" >> "${GITHUB_OUTPUT}"
    fi
    ```

- **Add behavioural coverage if you retain the setup.**
`.github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py`, Line 322–343, correctly pins the step order, output wiring, condition, and action SHA. However, the test checks manifest text only. It does not verify probe behaviour.

Cover an absent command, a working command, and a command that exists but exits unsuccessfully. The existing installation tests select only the final shell step, so they do not exercise the new setup steps.

@coderabbitai Have the following now been resolved?

Correct PR #412 in leynos/shared-actions.

Objective
Use cargo-binstall to install Merman in the Install Nixie composite action. Remove the custom Merman release downloader. Preserve Nixie installation through uv. Retain both Ty invocations with --python .venv.

1. Replace the cargo-binstall presence probe.

File: .github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml

Execute the Cargo subcommand rather than checking for an executable on PATH:

if cargo binstall -V >/dev/null 2>&1; then
  echo "installed=true" >> "${GITHUB_OUTPUT}"
else
  echo "installed=false" >> "${GITHUB_OUTPUT}"
fi

Keep the probe step ID and output wiring.
Run the upstream installer only when installed != 'true'.
Keep cargo-bins/cargo-binstall pinned to a full commit SHA.
Do not install or rebuild cargo-binstall unconditionally.
Do not substitute --version for -V in the usability probe.

2. Install Merman through cargo-binstall.

Replace the custom curl download, asset selection, archive extraction,
checksum tables, and checksum-based cache reconciliation.

Install the merman-cli crate at the exact requested merman-version.
Use non-interactive installation.
Disable source-build fallback so a missing binary fails instead of
silently compiling Merman.
Check the supported flags against the selected cargo-binstall version.

Preserve the existing input names and defaults:
- nixie-version: 1.1.0
- merman-version: 0.7.0
- python-version: 3.14

Validate merman-version before passing it to an installer.
Remove the restriction that accepts only 0.7.0 because of local checksum
tables. Use a clearly defined numeric version format.

Keep installation destinations deterministic.
Preserve version-correct cache reconciliation.
Do not accept a cached executable solely because its path exists.
Verify that installation produces a usable executable at the requested
version.
Export the actual Merman executable directory through GITHUB_PATH.

Preserve support for Linux/X64, macOS/ARM64, macOS/X64, and Windows/X64.
Check binary availability for these targets.
Report unsupported targets or missing binary releases clearly.
Do not retain the custom downloader as a fallback.

Preserve Nixie installation through uv.
Preserve Python version forwarding, Windows path handling, missing-shim
repair, and failure propagation.

Do not describe the new installation as protected by the removed pinned
digests. Document the resulting cargo-binstall trust and verification model.

3. Update manifest and behavioural tests.

File: .github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py

Replace the assertion that forbids cargo binstall with assertions for
the intended Merman installation command and exact version forwarding.

Keep manifest coverage for:
- Probe, conditional installer, and CLI installation order.
- Probe output name and conditional expression.
- Full upstream action SHA.

Execute the probe shell fragment in isolated tests.
Control PATH so host Cargo installations cannot affect the results.
Cover:
- Cargo or its binstall subcommand is absent: installed=false.
- cargo binstall -V succeeds: installed=true.
- A discoverable binstall executable or shim fails: installed=false.

Assert the exact GITHUB_OUTPUT content.
Assert that an unsuccessful availability check does not fail the probe step.

Replace obsolete curl, checksum, and archive stubs with deterministic
Cargo stubs. Keep tests independent of network access.

Cover Merman version forwarding, binary-only installation, installation
failure, missing or unusable installed executables, cache reconciliation,
and GITHUB_PATH output.
Preserve platform-specific and Nixie regression coverage.
Assert that a Merman installation failure stops subsequent installation
and does not publish a successful PATH result.

Select shell steps by stable identity. Exercise the availability probe
separately from the final installation script.

4. Preserve the Ty changes.

Files:
- Makefile
- workflow_scripts/tests/skylos_contract_support.py

Keep --python .venv in both Ty invocations.
Keep the shared contract prefix aligned with both recipes.
Avoid unrelated Makefile changes.

5. Validate and report.

Run the focused install-nixie tests.
Run git diff --check, make check-fmt, make test, make typecheck,
and make lint in the development environment.

Report the commands actually run and their results.
Identify any unavailable validation.
Summarize the installation trust-model change and remaining platform
limitations.

@leynos Most implementation requirements are complete. Do not treat the full checklist as resolved yet. Current Windows CI reports five failures in the Install Nixie tests.

I inspected head bd6cf77032fbc036df10ea3b5d0c543cd792b888. This assessment follows your earlier requirement to retain cargo-binstall for Merman and uv for Nixie.

Completed implementation

Requirement Assessment
Usability probe Complete. The action executes cargo binstall -V and writes the requested output.
Conditional setup Complete. The upstream installer runs only when installed != 'true'. It uses a full commit SHA and forwards version 1.22.0.
Merman installation Complete by inspection. The custom downloader is gone. The command requests the exact version, disables source compilation, selects an explicit target, and uses a deterministic installation directory.
Cache reconciliation Complete by inspection. The action checks executable usability and the reported version before reuse. It reinstalls mismatched or unusable entries.
Nixie preservation Complete by inspection. Installation still uses uv, forwards Python and Nixie versions, repairs missing shims, and propagates failures.
PATH export Complete by inspection. Export follows both executable checks and preserves Windows path conversion.
Ty configuration Complete. Both recipes use --python .venv. The shared contract matches. The Makefile diff contains only those two changes.
Trust documentation Substantially complete. The README explains the removed pinned digests, signature handling, unsigned artefacts, and limits of version checks.

The tagged cargo-binstall 1.22.0 source confirms that disabling compile removes the source-build strategy. It also confirms that --install-path performs a local installation without updating global package metadata.

Remaining blocker: Windows behavioural tests

Inspect the failed Windows job. It reports these failures in .github/actions/install-nixie/tests/test_action.py:

  1. Three probe scenarios fail:

    • subcommand-absent
    • discoverable-shim-fails
    • usable-subcommand

The expected stub calls are absent. The working-command scenario incorrectly produces installed=false.

Fix the Windows probe harness. At Line 220, it embeds the native Windows Bash path in a shebang. At Line 248, it supplies a Windows-form directory as the isolated PATH. Use Bash-compatible paths and an executable stub launcher. Keep host Cargo excluded.

  2. Two permission scenarios fail:

    • test_non_executable_cached_merman_is_reinstalled
    • test_install_script_rejects_missing_or_unusable_installed_merman[non-executable-file]

Make these tests platform-aware. Do not assume chmod(0o644) makes a file non-executable under Git Bash on Windows. Restrict POSIX permission assertions to suitable hosts. Retain execution-failure coverage on Windows.

These failures establish a test-portability problem. They do not, by themselves, establish that the production Windows installation fails.

Validation status

  • Verified here: static inspection, upstream source inspection, CI-log inspection, and a clean base-to-head git diff --check.
  • Reported in the PR: 34 focused tests passed; formatting, lint, and typecheck passed. The local full suite had three failures and one setup error.
  • Current CI: Linux and macOS Python jobs passed. Windows Python tests failed, including the five relevant failures above.
  • Still inconclusive: independent confirmation of Merman binary availability for all four targets. The release lookup returned HTTP 404. Stubbed target tests do not prove asset availability.

Fix the five Windows test failures, rerun validation, and provide successful release-metadata or installation evidence for the four targets. Keep the behavioural-validation requirement unresolved until then. I did not execute repository code in this sandbox.

Learning: In leynos/shared-actions, .github/actions/install-nixie/action.yml must use cargo-binstall to install the Rust merman-cli dependency rather than maintain a custom release downloader and archive installer. Preserve uv-based installation for the Python nixie-cli package. Do not recommend removing cargo-binstall setup merely because the current implementation still uses a custom Merman downloader.

Failed job/attempt: both Windows build-release targets (x86_64-pc-windows-gnullvm and aarch64-pc-windows-gnullvm), run 39063942281, attempt 2.
Established so far: both targets failed identically on attempts 1 and 2, in the Validate target step of .github/actions/rust-build-release, before release compilation. The preceding Setup uv action completed successfully and reported uv 0.13.1. The invoking rust-toy-app.yml workflow sets UV_PYTHON=3.13; the failing step runs uv run --script for action_setup.py. These workflow/action files are outside this PR diff. The error and exit code are reproducible on both Windows targets across both attempts. The PR-specific Linux, macOS, and Windows Python jobs, coverage, act-workflows, local gates, and CodeScene passed. The two Windows release contexts are required by the repository ruleset. The underlying reason for the stale or unavailable interpreter path and a systemic remedy are not yet established.
Investigation-ID: PR412-WINDOWS-UV-20261017-A

Please investigate the cause of the following issue using codegraph exploration and research, identify a fix and provide an AI coding agent prompt for the fix:

uv run --script "$GITHUB_ACTION_PATH/src/action_setup.py" validate "aarch64-pc-windows-gnullvm"
did not find executable at 'C:\hostedtoolcache\windows\Python\3.13.15\x64\python.exe': The system cannot find the path specified.
Process completed with exit code 103.

The same error is present for x86_64-pc-windows-gnullvm; the logs show the Setup uv action succeeds immediately before Validate target fails.

Seek a systemic fix rather than tactical. Ask yourself, can this happen again or happen elsewhere? If so, think about a long term fix of the underlying issue.

Please provide investigation and a prompt only, not automatic commits or new PRs.

@wafflecat-df12 Treat this as an interpreter-bound cache failure, not a Merman installation failure. Repair the uv cache lifecycle before rerunning the required Windows checks.

Investigation: PR412-WINDOWS-UV-20261017-A

I inspected candidate 09fd2b65e7950b7b53aa7c61808df3c2f89971f5, the base-to-candidate file list, both attempt-2 job logs, and upstream source code. I did not modify files, execute repository code, create commits, or open a PR.

Confirmed evidence

Both Windows jobs follow the same sequence:

Stage Evidence
Workflow-level Setup uv Restores the same cache into D:\a\_temp\setup-uv-cache. The key includes Python 3.13, not its patch version.
Extract crate version Successfully selects CPython 3.13.16 and creates the project .venv.
Composite-action Setup uv Installs uv 0.13.1 successfully. Its cache lookup misses. It retains the same cache directory.
Validate target Attempts to use CPython 3.13.15 and exits 103 before target validation or compilation.

The nested cache miss does not mean the cache directory is empty. The workflow-level setup already restored that directory.

The inspected call graph is:

rust-toy-app.yml
→ Setup uv: restore shared cache
→ Extract crate version: project environment, Python 3.13.16
  → rust-build-release/action.yml
→ Setup uv: retain shared cache directory
      → action_setup.py validate: inline-metadata script environment
      → action_setup.py toolchain
      → setup-rust
      → setup_gnullvm.py
      → main.py

In .github/actions/rust-build-release/action.yml, Line 71 starts the failing script. Later calls at Line 93, Line 169, and Line 180 use the same script-execution mechanism.

Neither the release action nor its invoking workflow changes between the specified base and candidate.

Cause and confidence

The strongest supported explanation is a restored script environment that still refers to Python 3.13.15.

The upstream sources establish the mechanism:

A Python request of 3.13 does not require a fresh environment built with the currently available patch version. A restored environment can therefore retain a dependency on an unavailable interpreter.

Keep the remaining uncertainty explicit. The logs do not expose the failed environment’s pyvenv.cfg or exact executable path. I did not inspect the restored cache archive. The interpreter-bound environment failure is established by the launcher error. Its origin in the restored script cache is a high-confidence diagnosis, not complete forensic proof.

The logs also do not establish when or why Python 3.13.15 disappeared. Do not claim that the current runner deleted it during this job.

Systemic fix

Separate reusable package data from interpreter-bound environments.

Apply two controls:

  1. Repair restored state before script execution. Run uv cache prune after cache restoration and before the first inline-metadata script. In the inspected uv version, this command removes cached environments without requiring a working Python interpreter.
  2. Prevent recurrence when saving caches. Enable prune-cache: true for setup-uv cache owners. Consolidate ownership so nested setup calls do not independently restore and save the same directory.

uv 0.13.1’s cache implementation explicitly removes cached environments during pruning. Plain uv cache prune performs that removal. --ci adds further package-cache reductions; it is not required for environment removal.

Keep restore-time repair as well as save-time pruning. Save-time pruning cannot repair an old cache before the current job uses it.

Audit other uv run --script consumers and cache owners. This failure can recur after another Python patch change, runner-image change, or restored environment from another machine. The coverage action already excludes environments-v2 from one explicit cache. That exclusion does not govern setup-uv’s separate cache archive.

Do not substitute these incomplete fixes:

  • --isolated: uv 0.13.1 explicitly treats this as a no-op for inline-metadata scripts.
  • --python 3.13: the failing job already sets UV_PYTHON=3.13.
  • A one-time cache deletion or cache-key bump: this removes one occurrence without fixing future cache contents.
  • Installing Python 3.13.15: this preserves the stale dependency instead of removing it.
  • Ignoring exit 103 or weakening required checks: this hides the failure.

AI coding agent prompt

Investigate and fix PR412-WINDOWS-UV-20261017-A in leynos/shared-actions.

Candidate: 09fd2b65e7950b7b53aa7c61808df3c2f89971f5
Base: 81374b6f183e59f0570ad36217ded90d3240fda6
Failed run: 39063942281, attempt 2
Jobs: 117492240903 and 117492241038

Delivery constraints
Prepare changes and validation results for human review.
Do not create commits, push branches, or open a PR.

Objective
Prevent restored uv script environments from retaining dependencies on
unavailable Python interpreters.
Retain useful package caching.
Preserve the required Windows release contexts and existing action behavior.

Established evidence
- The workflow-level setup-uv restores a shared cache.
- Extract crate version successfully uses CPython 3.13.16.
- The nested setup-uv retains the same UV_CACHE_DIR.
- Validate target then fails through a Windows virtual-environment
launcher that cannot find CPython 3.13.15.
- The release workflow and action are outside the candidate PR diff.
- The restored script-cache origin is a high-confidence diagnosis.
The failed environment configuration has not yet been captured.

1. Complete the evidence chain.
Inspect:
- .github/workflows/rust-toy-app.yml
- .github/actions/rust-build-release/action.yml
- .github/actions/rust-build-release/src/action_setup.py
- The nested setup-rust revision used by rust-build-release.

Trace every uv cache restore, save, and script invocation.
Distinguish project .venv state from cached script environments.

In a controlled reproduction, capture the script environment root,
pyvenv.cfg, Python request, uv version, and available base interpreter.
Do not dump secrets or the complete process environment.
If the reproduction contradicts the diagnosis, revise the fix.

2. Implement a reusable cache-lifecycle policy.
Use supported uv cache operations instead of deleting internal cache
directories directly.

Add restore-time pruning before the first inline-metadata script can use
restored state.
Use plain uv cache prune when only environment removal is required.
Propagate pruning failures.
Do not use --force against a cache that concurrent uv processes can use.

Enable prune-cache: true for setup-uv cache owners to prevent saving
interpreter-bound environments.
Keep restore-time repair for old archives and externally restored state.

Establish one archive-cache owner per shared directory.
Make nested tool setup avoid duplicate archive ownership.
Preserve standalone composite-action use.
Respect cache-provider: external and do not add GitHub archive ownership
when the caller owns the cache.

Account for later restores inside setup-rust.
A restore after pruning must not reintroduce stale environments before
another script invocation.

3. Address recurrence beyond this workflow.
Audit other uv run --script consumers and uv cache owners.
Reuse a common setup or preparation mechanism where practical.
Apply the same policy to equivalent restore paths.
Document separately any consumers that cannot be migrated safely.

Do not treat an exclusion in generate-coverage's explicit actions/cache
step as protection for setup-uv's independent archive.

4. Add regression tests.
Cover:
- Cold cache.
- Warm package cache.
- Restored script environment with a missing base interpreter.
- Python patch-version change within one minor version.
- Nested setup using an already restored cache directory.
- A later restore that would reintroduce stale state.
- Pruning failure stopping script execution.
- External cache ownership and standalone action use.

Add manifest contracts for restore/prune/script ordering and cache ownership.
Add a real uv regression in a controlled test environment.
Do not rely only on command-string assertions.

On Windows, verify executable usability by execution.
Do not assume POSIX chmod behavior.
Verify that package-cache reuse remains effective.

5. Preserve unrelated behavior.
Keep Merman installation through cargo-binstall.
Keep Nixie installation through uv.
Keep both Ty checks on .venv.
Preserve target validation, toolchain resolution, gnullvm setup,
release builds, and artefact verification.
Do not weaken required checks or suppress exit 103.

6. Validate and report.
Run focused tests and the repository's applicable local gates.
Run both required Windows gnullvm release jobs.
Exercise cold and warm cache runs.
Run Linux and macOS regression checks.

Report:
- The confirmed cause and any remaining uncertainty.
- Changed files and cache ownership decisions.
- Commands run and actual results.
- Evidence that stale environments are rebuilt.
- Evidence that useful package caches remain reusable.
- Validation that was unavailable.

Do not claim resolution until the required Windows jobs pass.

Keep the Windows release blocker unresolved pending that validation. This investigation verifies the source-level failure mechanism and identifies a prevention strategy. It does not establish a successful repaired Windows run.

@coderabbitai Please reconcile these rows against the current candidate:
leynos/shared-actions#412, base main at
3e4cba9ff5898f40723b95e09b8d5bae26c1b1f6, head
6642b1a8604e050bcf6ff149b8837016516e3c0d.

The walkthrough comment records 2 errors and 3 warnings, but says its last full
review inspected 9462f4e, not this candidate. This is a focused request to
reconcile those rows, not a request for another full review. The hosted checks
and CodeScene are currently running on the exact head.

Check name Status Current evidence and disposition
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) Error The tests use deterministic Cargo/binstall, Merman and uv stubs and do not fetch live release binaries, as explicitly required for network-independent tests. The focused install-nixie suite passed all 39 tests. The local full suite had 3 existing setup-rust wrapper-scoping Cargo subprocesses time out after 240 seconds while shared compiler admission was healthy and busy; hosted checks for this head remain pending. We will not add a live-download test. Please identify a missing scenario that can be covered offline, or confirm the live-download request conflicts with the accepted test contract.
Unit Architecture Error The action runs the required cargo binstall -V probe, writes installed=true/false, and runs the full-SHA-pinned upstream installer only when the probe fails. The manifest and tests cover the exact probe, output, condition, SHA and ordering. Changing this to reject the required probe would violate the explicit acceptance criteria. Please identify a defect compatible with that contract, or confirm this row does not apply.
User-Facing Documentation Warning The current README documents bootstrap ordering, input formats and leading-zero rules, supported targets, cache/version verification, trust boundaries, shim repair and failure-safe PATH export (.github/actions/install-nixie/README.md:64-117). The users' guide covers the same behavior and Windows path handling (docs/users-guide.md:1578-1666). Please confirm resolution or name a remaining user-facing omission.
Developer Documentation Warning The developer guide records both uv-cache pruning controls, their ordering, cache ownership and the Windows exit-103 rationale (docs/developers-guide.md:3280-3287); the trust model is also documented in the action README. Please confirm resolution or identify the remaining contributor-facing gap.
Observability Warning Input, prerequisite, target, Merman install/executable/version and Nixie shim failures emit bounded GitHub errors and fail the step; cache reconciliation and shim repair emit notices. GITHUB_PATH is appended only after both tools pass verification, and uv-cache pruning already records its outcome. Please confirm these operator-visible outcomes satisfy this row, or specify the distinct decision that requires an additional metric/summary.

Current sources: action, tests, user guide, developer guide.

Please confirm each disposition and provide a concrete agent prompt for any
remaining work. Warnings are being treated as in-scope findings, not optional
recommendations.

@pandalump Treat the two errors as withdrawn. Close the User-Facing Documentation and Observability warnings. Retain one narrow correction under Developer Documentation.

I inspected base 3e4cba9ff5898f40723b95e09b8d5bae26c1b1f6 and head 6642b1a8604e050bcf6ff149b8837016516e3c0d. GitHub PR metadata matches both revisions. This was a focused reconciliation, not a full review.

Row dispositions

Check name Disposition Current-candidate evidence
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) Withdraw the live-install requirement. The tests cover probe outcomes, exact-version binary-only installation, all four target mappings, cache reuse and repair, unusable executables, token scope, Nixie reconciliation, and failure-safe PATH export. I identified no missing offline scenario that justifies this error. Do not require a live-download workflow to satisfy the accepted network-independent test contract.
Unit Architecture Withdraw as inapplicable. The action executes cargo binstall -V, publishes installed=true/false, and conditionally invokes the SHA-pinned installer. The manifest test checks the command, output, condition, pin, version, and ordering. Publishing a GitHub Actions step output is valid orchestration. It does not establish the claimed architecture defect. Do not make setup unconditional.
User-Facing Documentation Close as resolved for this candidate. The README at Line 64–117 and users’ guide at Line 1578–1666 cover bootstrap behaviour, version formats, supported targets, cache verification, trust boundaries, failure behaviour, shim repair, and Windows paths. No remaining omission from this row was established. The changelog marks v1.0.0 as unreleased. I found no basis for requiring an upgrade migration document in this reconciliation.
Developer Documentation Close the original omissions; retain the correction below. The developer guide at Line 3280–3287 documents both pruning controls, ordering, inherited cache state, and Windows exit 103. ADR 0009 records the cache policy. Line 3025–3031 records the deliberate Merman trust-model change. Do not require a separate Merman ADR solely to duplicate that explanation. However, Line 2997 still incorrectly states that prerequisites are checked before any installation.
Observability Withdraw the mandatory metrics redesign. Named steps, exit status, annotations, and repair notices provide operator-visible outcomes. The shared pruning helper already emits uv-cache-prune.outcome=success|failure to the log and summary. I identified no distinct operator decision that requires an additional install-nixie.* metric or summary. Existing metrics in other actions do not, by themselves, establish that requirement here.

For Observability, distinguish action annotations from subprocess diagnostics. The direct uv tool install command propagates its failure and supplies uv’s diagnostics. It does not add a custom bounded GitHub error for every uv failure. That distinction does not justify the earlier requirement for a new metrics framework.

Remaining documentation correction

In docs/developers-guide.md, Line 2996–2999, replace:

requires uv and Cargo on PATH, checks both before installing anything

The action can bootstrap cargo-binstall before the later installation step checks those prerequisites. The README and users’ guide already describe that ordering correctly.

Use this agent prompt:

Make one documentation-only correction in leynos/shared-actions#412.

Reference candidate:
6642b1a8604e050bcf6ff149b8837016516e3c0d

File:
docs/developers-guide.md

Under “install-nixie Action Maintenance”, correct the prerequisite-ordering
statement at Line 2996–2999.

State that:
- The runner must provide uv and Cargo on PATH.
- The action probes cargo-binstall and can bootstrap it before the later
CLI installation step checks uv and Cargo.
- If that prerequisite check fails, the action stops before installing
  Merman or Nixie.

Keep the wording aligned with the action README at Line 64–68 and the
users’ guide at Line 1578–1587.

Do not change action logic, tests, inputs, pins, or metrics.
Do not add live-download tests or make cargo-binstall setup unconditional.
Do not create commits, push branches, or open another PR.

Run git diff --check and make check-fmt.
Report the actual results and any unavailable validation.

Validation boundary

  • Passed here: base-to-head git diff --check.
  • Verified by inspection: the candidate source and test contracts above.
  • Observed in hosted checks: CodeScene passed. The latest snapshot still showed coverage, Windows Python tests, macOS Python tests, and act-workflows running.
  • Not independently verified: the reported 39-test local result and the cause of the three local Cargo timeouts. Do not classify those timeouts as established pre-existing failures from this inspection alone.

Wait for the remaining exact-head checks before making the merge decision. This reply does not update the walkthrough counters or provider approval status.

Thanks for clarifying the test contract.

You are interacting with an AI system.

Align developer guidance with the conditional cargo-binstall bootstrap and
subsequent CLI prerequisite check.

Clear inherited GitHub credentials before the probe and uv calls.

When a caller sets GITHUB_TOKEN, the script leaves it in the environment. The Merman probe and both uv tool install calls can therefore expose that token to the cached or installed tools. Unset inherited credentials before running them, then pass the captured token only to cargo binstall.

Clear inherited GitHub token aliases before running unsigned binaries, and
replace stale cache paths even when they are directories. Record the upstream

Keep the Ty typecheck contract aligned with the existing Makefile recipes,

@coderabbitai — this is a candidate-bound disposition for the findings in your review on 405cc187. The current head is 95a7c3f83b18be5d3086a3ce7baa41feb4efa024.

  • Credential inheritance: fixed by clearing MERMAN_GITHUB_TOKEN, inherited GITHUB_TOKEN, and GH_TOKEN before running Merman or uv. Tests verify only the scoped cargo binstall invocation receives the captured token.
  • Stale cache path: fixed by removing the exact version-scoped executable path recursively before reinstalling; a regression test covers a directory occupying that path.
  • Ty contract: the behavioural contract now includes --python .venv and matches both recipes' existing search/source paths. The focused tests pass.
  • Testing overall / property coverage: the stale recipe assertion is corrected. Hypothesis tests now generate valid numeric versions and malformed formats.
  • Developer documentation: ADR 0010 records the binary-only trust boundary, unsigned-artefact policy, token scope, and limits of version checks.
  • Runner-backed test request: I kept the action tests network-independent as required. Deterministic stubs cover all four target mappings and installation failures. Separately, cargo-binstall 1.22.0 dry-runs with source compilation disabled fetched Merman 0.7.0 binary artifacts for Linux/X64, macOS/ARM64, macOS/X64, and Windows/X64. This confirms artifact availability for 0.7.0, not cross-host runtime execution.
  • Availability-step architecture: I retained the required cargo binstall -V probe, GITHUB_OUTPUT wiring, and conditional pinned installer. That output is step-scoped workflow control flow, not persistent state; unconditional bootstrap would violate the requested behavior.
  • User-facing migration documentation: the action README and users' guide now document prerequisites and the trust model. No release containing this change has shipped to require a separate migration notice.
  • Observability: failures exit the composite step with ::error, repairs emit ::notice, and GitHub reports the step result. I have not added a new per-boundary metric contract that was not requested.

Please confirm whether these dispositions resolve the existing rows, and identify any concrete remaining blocker. This asks only about the listed findings, not for another whole-PR review.

@pandalump Treat the listed findings as resolved or withdrawn for candidate 95a7c3f83b18be5d3086a3ce7baa41feb4efa024. No concrete blocker remains among those findings.

I verified that the checkout and GitHub PR metadata match this candidate. This was a focused reconciliation, not another whole-PR review.

Finding Disposition Verified evidence
Credential inheritance Addressed action.yml, Line 64–74, captures the token and clears MERMAN_GITHUB_TOKEN, GITHUB_TOKEN, and GH_TOKEN before Merman or uv runs. Only the installation command receives the scoped GITHUB_TOKEN. Regression assertions cover inherited aliases and the unauthenticated case.
Stale cache path Addressed action.yml, Line 136–140, uses rm -rf -- "$merman_path". The directory regression verifies that installation replaces the directory with a file.
Ty contract Addressed tests/test_makefile_typecheck.py includes --python .venv in _UV_TYPECHECK_PREFIX. Both assertions use the prefix length and retain the expected search and source paths. The shared manifest contract also includes these arguments.
Testing overall / property coverage Close the listed gaps Hypothesis generates valid numeric versions and malformed formats. Tests check exact forwarding, rejection before installation, and no PATH export after rejection. The stale Ty assertion is corrected.
Developer documentation Resolved ADR 0010 records binary-only installation, unsigned-artefact acceptance, token scope, and verification limits. The developer guide also corrects the bootstrap/prerequisite ordering.
Runner-backed test request Withdraw the live-download requirement The deterministic tests cover all four target mappings and installation failures. No concrete missing offline scenario remains from this finding. Keep artefact availability separate from cross-host runtime execution.
Availability-step architecture Withdraw as inapplicable The required cargo binstall -V probe, step output, conditional installer, full SHA, and ordering are present and tested. Step-scoped workflow control flow does not establish the alleged persistent-state defect.
User-facing migration documentation Withdraw the separate migration-notice requirement The README and users’ guide document prerequisites, bootstrap ordering, cache behaviour, and the trust model. The changelog identifies v1.0.0 as unreleased. No remaining omission from this finding was established.
Observability Withdraw the mandatory metrics requirement Existing errors, notices, subprocess diagnostics, and GitHub step results provide the required outcomes. Direct uv failures propagate uv’s diagnostics and exit status; they do not all receive a custom ::error. That distinction does not justify a new metric contract.

I used the existing learning that the behavioural tests must remain network-independent. Your reported cargo-binstall dry-runs support Merman 0.7.0 artefact availability, not cross-host execution. I did not independently repeat those downloads.

Exact-candidate validation

The returned check results show success for:

  • Linux, macOS, and Windows Python tests.
  • Coverage and act-workflows.
  • Both required Windows gnullvm release jobs.
  • CodeScene.

All returned check runs completed with success or were skipped. Base-to-head git diff --check also passed. I did not execute repository code or rerun tests locally.

Do not carry these findings forward as blockers for this candidate. No corrective agent prompt is needed for the listed findings. This reply does not change review-thread state, walkthrough counters, or provider approval status.

Thanks for clarifying the trust boundary.

Learning: In leynos/shared-actions, docs/adr/0010-merman-binary-installation-trust.md records the deliberate install-nixie trust boundary: install Merman from prebuilt binaries without source-build fallback, allow unsigned artefacts, and treat executable/version checks as usability checks rather than publisher or content authentication. Clear MERMAN_GITHUB_TOKEN, GITHUB_TOKEN, and GH_TOKEN before running Merman or uv; supply the captured job token only to the Merman cargo-binstall installation command. Do not flag unsigned-artefact acceptance or the absence of locally pinned Merman binary digests as an accidental omission.

@coderabbitai Have the following failed checks now been resolved?

If further work is required, please provide an AI agent prompt for the remaining work to be done to address these failures.

Do not treat warnings as optional or aspirational. Where a change is out of scope for this PR, propose a GitHub issue unless one exists already. (Treat o11y, code safety, documentation and validation coverage for this PR's changes as in scope).

Candidate: base main at 3e4cba9ff5898f40723b95e09b8d5bae26c1b1f6; head 26e3e742679729be206f019cc298c61ce771d1eb. Current walkthrough: CodeRabbit pre-merge checks.

The prior focused reconciliation at comment 6283825509 explicitly treated these same runner-backed coverage, probe architecture, migration-document, and observability requests as withdrawn or resolved for 95a7c3f. The only subsequent source change is the verified token-discovery guard and its isolated credential-file regression test; CodeRabbit confirmed that fix and resolved its inline thread at discussion 4322120905.

On head 26e3e742, the focused Install Nixie tests passed (42 tests), followed sequentially by make check-fmt, make test (4,536 passed, 158 skipped, 15 snapshots), make typecheck, make lint, make markdownlint, and make nixie. Hosted validation for this exact head is also complete: all 21 required checks passed, all 17 applicable pull_request runs passed at attempt 1, and CodeScene passed at result 8030725. The skipped pull_request_target run was non-applicable.

The action README and users' guide already document the bootstrap prerequisite, supported versions and targets, cache, token scope, Windows PATH handling, and the changed trust/verification model; the action changelog is marked unreleased. For observability, the action emits a failing GitHub step and bounded ::error diagnostics at input, prerequisite, target, Cargo installation, executable/version verification, and Nixie-shim failure boundaries; set -euo pipefail also propagates uv failures, while cache repair and shim repair emit notices. The prior bot reconciliation withdrew a separate metric requirement. Please confirm whether those prior dispositions still apply to this exact head, or provide a concrete remaining-work prompt for any row that must change.

@pandalump Retain the prior dispositions for head 26e3e742679729be206f019cc298c61ce771d1eb. Treat all four listed findings as withdrawn or resolved. No concrete blocker remains among these rows.

I verified the requested base and head against GitHub PR metadata. The GitHub comparison confirms that the only subsequent source changes are the token-discovery guard and its test support.

Candidate-bound dispositions

Check Disposition Evidence and required action
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) Withdraw the runner-backed end-to-end requirement. Retain the accepted network-independent test contract. The deterministic tests cover the required probe, exact-version forwarding, target mappings, credential isolation, cache reconciliation, installation failures, and PATH publication. The new regression asserts --no-discover-github-token with isolated stored-credential fixtures. No concrete missing offline scenario was established by this row.
Unit Architecture Withdraw as inapplicable. Retain cargo binstall -V, GITHUB_OUTPUT, and the conditional full-SHA-pinned installer. action.yml, Line 22–35, implements the explicit acceptance criteria. Publishing a step output for workflow control does not establish the alleged architecture defect. Do not make installation unconditional.
User-Facing Documentation Retain the resolved disposition; withdraw the separate migration-document requirement. The README, Line 64–117, and users’ guide, Line 1578–1666, document prerequisites, bootstrap ordering, version and target rules, cache behavior, token scope, Windows paths, and verification limits. The changelog remains unreleased. No additional user-facing omission was established.
Observability Withdraw the mandatory emit_metric requirement. Retain the existing GitHub step results, bounded errors, repair notices, and subprocess diagnostics. These expose the relevant outcomes. Direct uv failures propagate their diagnostics and exit status; they do not all receive a custom annotation. No distinct operator requirement was established that needs a new terminal-metric contract.

These dispositions do not treat warnings as optional. They reject unsupported requirements after checking the current evidence.

Exact-head validation

The returned GitHub results confirm:

  • All 17 pull_request workflow runs passed on attempt 1.
  • Linux, macOS, and Windows Python checks passed.
  • Both Windows gnullvm release checks passed.
  • Coverage, act-workflows, and CodeScene passed.
  • All returned check runs completed with success or were skipped.
  • The CodeRabbit commit status is success.

The pull_request_target Dependabot run was skipped. I did not independently enumerate the ruleset’s 21 required contexts. I also did not rerun your reported local commands or verify their test counts.

The first local comparison failed because the earlier commit was absent from the checkout. The subsequent GitHub comparison succeeded and supplied the change evidence.

Remaining work

Do not add corrective code, a runner-backed test matrix, a migration document, or a metric helper to satisfy these four rows. No remaining-work agent prompt or follow-up GitHub issue is warranted.

Treat the walkthrough’s “2 errors · 2 warnings” as inconsistent with this focused reconciliation. This reply does not update those counters, resolve threads, or change provider approval status.

I used the existing learnings for the network-independent test contract and the deliberate Merman trust boundary. This was not a whole-PR review.

Learning: In leynos/shared-actions, the install-nixie behavioural test contract uses deterministic Cargo/cargo-binstall, Merman, and uv stubs without fetching live release binaries. Do not require live-download tests to satisfy that offline behavioural contract. Evaluate concrete missing offline scenarios separately from hosted CI completion.

Published head: 26e3e74; base: 3e4cba9.
The latest completed candidate-bound review/disposition round found no remaining concrete blockers; this is not a claim of a new full review. The valid current-head credential-discovery finding was addressed and pushed.
Earlier substantive findings: credential discovery was fixed in commit 26e3e74 and CodeRabbit resolved the inline thread (confirmation). CodeRabbit retained the four prior pre-merge row dispositions for this exact head and identified no concrete blocker (reconciliation).
Pre-merge checks: all four rows are withdrawn or resolved by that candidate-bound reconciliation; all 10 review threads are resolved.
CI: all 21 required checks passed; all 17 applicable pull_request workflow runs succeeded at attempt 1; CodeScene approved this head (result).
Rebase/stack state: PR #412 targets main at 3e4cba9. Branch use-cargo-bins-action is the accepted head; no prerequisite PRs or stack parents remain.

Please approve if those findings are resolved. If approval remains blocked, identify the specific unresolved finding or missing required inspection.
