What

Adds .github/actions/install-mdtablefix, a composite action that installs a
pinned mdtablefix from its prebuilt release through a hardened
cargo binstall, and never from source. Closes #442.

Seven steps, whose order is part of the contract:

  1. Validate inputs. version (required, three numeric components),
    binstall-version (default 1.22.0), bin-dir (default ~/.local/bin,
absolute or ~/-rooted, bounded, no parent components, no PATH
separator, creatable and enterable on this runner).
  2. Check platform support. Rejected before the cache is consulted, so a
cached executable cannot report success on a runner this action could not
have installed. That is the failure install-whitaker had to be corrected
    for.
  3. Probe. Exits early with install-mdtablefix.result=cached when
bin-dir or PATH already holds the pinned version, then probes
cargo-binstall by running cargo binstall -V.
  4. Install cargo-binstall, only when the probe asked for it, with
    cargo-bins/cargo-binstall@75b4bfae1b2c753a6806bbce6e6cb89b602de33c
    (v1.22.0), pinned by commit SHA.
  5. Report a failed provisioning. The upstream step is the one step this
action cannot annotate from inside, so a failure()-guarded step reports
    binstall-unavailable.
  6. Install mdtablefix with --no-confirm --locked --disable-strategies compile --disable-telemetry --install-path <bin-dir> --bin-dir '{ bin }{ binary-ext }'.
  7. Verify the reported version.

Every terminal path emits exactly one install-mdtablefix.result line, over
invalid-input, cached, installed, no-prebuilt, binstall-unavailable,
install-failed, and version-mismatch. The action caches nothing itself; the
caller owns bin-dir and its key, so one key keeps one owner.

The bin-dir override, proven

mdtablefix 0.5.0 declares bin-dir = "." in its binstall metadata. Against
the pinned cargo-binstall 1.22.0, downloaded and run locally:

  • Without the override: bin-dir configuration provided generates empty source path, then Fallback to cargo-install is disabled, exit 94.
  • With --bin-dir '{ bin }{ binary-ext }' it installs, and the executable
reports mdtablefix 0.5.0. Same for --targets aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu.

Remove the override, and the test that pins it, once a pinned release carries
fixed metadata (leynos/mdtablefix#458).

Correction to the issue: macOS has no prebuilt asset either

#442 expected macOS to be satisfied by binstall. It is not. The v0.5.0 release
publishes only Linux gnu x86_64 and aarch64 tarballs plus a FreeBSD binary,
and the crate's binstall override is gated on
cfg(all(target_os = "linux", ..., target_env = "gnu")). Verified with
--targets aarch64-apple-darwin and --targets x86_64-pc-windows-msvc: both
fail closed against the pinned binstall.

So macOS is treated exactly as Windows: no-prebuilt and a hard failure, never
a source build. The runner-backed macos-15 job asserts that failure and that
no executable was left behind. The corrected acceptance criteria are recorded
on #442.

What would unblock those platforms is
leynos/mdtablefix#459, which
asks for macOS and Windows release assets and for the binstall metadata to be
ungated from linux-gnu. The no-prebuilt annotation names it, so a failing
run says what would fix it.

Two defects found while building this

  • The fragment harness did not run fragments the way a runner does. A
    runner writes a composite run: fragment to a file and executes that file;
the harness passed the same text to bash -c. Bash 3.2, which macOS runners
ship, replaces itself with the last command of a bash -c string when that
command is external, discarding an ERR trap along with the shell, while
Bash 5 suppresses that optimization when a trap is set. So a fragment that
reported its failure from a trap passed on Linux and, on macOS, failed with
no annotation and no metric. Measured across six cases on macos-15 and
ubuntu-latest: every combination fires except bash -c with an external
last command on Bash 3.2. The harness now runs fragments from a file, and two
tests hold that line. This is a harness defect, not a platform one; the
sibling installers' ERR traps are fine on a runner. An earlier revision of
this pull request claimed otherwise, and was wrong.
  • A bin-dir the runner could not create exited silently. Found by the
property tests, not by reasoning: an absolute candidate outside the sandbox
failed mkdir and the run ended with no annotation and no metric. It is now
refused like any other bad input.

Tests

  • Manifest tests pin the input table, the step order, the platform gate
preceding the cache probe, the upstream commit SHA and the release its
comment names, every hardening flag, and a Bash 3.2 guard.
  • Input tests run the real validation fragment over eleven rejection cases.
  • Behavioural tests drive every fragment in manifest order against a
stubbed cargo, covering every outcome above, plus what the action reads
from an executable it did not write: a report spanning several lines, an
overlong one, and a cargo binstall that exits zero having installed
nothing. The stub refuses to install unless it receives the --bin-dir
override, so deleting that override fails nine tests rather than passing
locally and failing on a runner. Confirmed by deleting the line.
  • Property tests state the input grammar from the documentation and check
the shipped fragment against it, so a fragment that drifts from what is
    documented fails.
  • .github/workflows/test-install-mdtablefix.yml is the runner-backed
boundary. The ubuntu-latest job installs the pinned version, asserts what
the executable reports, then puts a failing cargo stub on PATH and
invokes the action again. A second run that reaches cargo-binstall fails the
job, so the cached outcome is proved rather than read out of a log. The
macos-15 job asserts the fail-closed contract.

Fragment harness

composite_fragments.py at the repository root runs a composite action's Bash
fragments outside GitHub Actions, resolving the expression subset the installer
manifests use, evaluating each step's if: including a failure() guard, threading
$GITHUB_OUTPUT between steps, and running each fragment from a file. It has its own tests, because a
defect there makes every suite built on it report an outcome no runner would
produce; one such defect, reading key=a<<b as a heredoc opener, was found in
review. install-whitaker keeps its private copy for now; folding it in is a
separate change, so that action's in-flight work is not disturbed.

Gates

make fmt, check-fmt, typecheck, lint, markdownlint, nixie and
test were run sequentially. All pass except pre-existing environmental
failures in unrelated suites (rust-build-release cross builds needing a
container runtime, an rpm packaging error, and Hypothesis DeadlineExceeded
flakes under host load), which are issue #434. All 82 new tests pass.

Relationship to #412

PR #412, "Install cargo-binstall with cargo-bins action", is a draft opened on
2026-08-21 and untouched since. It does not add a reusable binstall
installation step, and this pull request does not build on it.

Its premise no longer holds: it adds the probe so install-nixie can reach a
binary Merman path, but install-nixie on main no longer uses
cargo-binstall at all, because #423 replaced that path with verified release
archives. Its probe is command -v cargo-binstall, which is the presence-probe
defect recorded as #420 and which this pull request deliberately avoids by
running cargo binstall -V. Its Makefile change is already on main.

The shared shape, a probe step publishing an output and a uses: step
conditioned on it, is forced by composite actions and is not borrowed from
#412. This pull request supersedes that pattern with a corrected probe, a newer
pinned SHA, a forwarded binstall-version, and an annotation for a failure of
the upstream installer. Recorded on #412; closing it is the maintainer's call.

Follow-up

Replace the local installers in netsuke, rstest-bdd, cuprum, whitaker and the
Tier 2 repositories with this action, in separate pull requests.

Reviewer's Guide

Introduces a hardened, composite install-mdtablefix action that validates inputs, fails closed on platforms without prebuilt releases, reuses caller-owned caches, provisions commit-pinned cargo-binstall only when necessary, installs with source-compilation disabled, verifies the pinned version, and is covered by manifest, fragment-level, and runner-backed tests.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Add a composite action that installs an exact mdtablefix release exclusively from supported prebuilt assets.
  • Validate semantic-version inputs and constrain the bin directory to safe absolute or home-rooted paths.
  • Reject unsupported platforms before checking cached executables; currently only Linux X64 and ARM64 are supported.
  • Probe the cached tool and usable cargo-binstall, installing the latter only when needed via a commit-pinned upstream action.
  • Run cargo-binstall with locked, noninteractive, telemetry-disabled, compile-disabled flags and the workaround for mdtablefix 0.5.0 binstall metadata.
  • Verify the executable-reported version and emit bounded result and binstall metrics.

Assessment against linked issues

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#442 Add a shared composite install-mdtablefix action that validates inputs, supports caller-owned caching, probes cargo-binstall by executing it, conditionally installs the pinned SHA-pinned binstall action, performs a locked compile-disabled installation with the mdtablefix bin-dir workaround, supports only platforms with prebuilt assets, and verifies the installed version. ❌ The PR implements the core installation, hardening, platform gating, caching, probing, and verification behavior. However, the issue explicitly requires a step-summary line naming the mdtablefix version and how it was satisfied. The action writes only outcome metric lines to GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY; the version appears in notices, not in the summary line itself.
#442 Add comprehensive tests covering manifest structure, pinned dependencies, Bash 3.2 compatibility, cache and installation outcomes, platform failures, version mismatches, and runner-backed behavior. ✅
#442 Document the action and its cache pattern, platform limitations, developer contract, and release history in the users' guide, developers' guide, and CHANGELOG. ✅

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Require stronger behavioural tests for the new output-bounding and verification paths. The action limits cached and installed version output with head -n 1 and cut -c 1-120 in both probes, but no test supplies multi-line or overlong output. The existing stubs emit one short line, so removing those limits would still pass. The successful Cargo stub also always creates the executable, so the Verify mdtablefix missing-executable branch is not exercised. These gaps match the check's requirement to fail plausible incorrect implementations.

Resolution

Add scenario controls for multi-line, overlong version output and for a successful Cargo invocation that creates no executable. Add behavioural tests that assert only the first 120 characters reach comparisons and annotations, and that a missing executable produces version-mismatch, a failure annotation, and a non-zero result. Keep the tests driven by the real Bash fragments, not by source-text assertions alone.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Fail: the new query-like helpers hide filesystem effects and fallible I/O. FragmentEnvironment.output_file() is documented as returning a path, but composite_fragments.py:196-199 calls mkdir; run_step() invokes it at line 255. This makes a read-style path lookup mutate the filesystem. The new manifest helpers also claim to be read-only, but load_manifest() reads and parses the module-global ACTION_PATH (_mdtablefix_manifest.py:53-58), while manifest_steps(), step_by_name(), step_script(), and step_env() repeat that environmental I/O. Their APIs expose only dict/list/str results and do not define or handle OSError or YAML parsing failures. The new scenario query _installed_version() has the same unchecked read_text() dependency. These violations are introduced by the new shared harness and mdtablefix test modules, so the pull request has direct causality.

Resolution

Refactor the path helper so it only joins paths. Move directory creation into an explicitly named command at the execution/setup boundary, and add a test that the query does not change the filesystem. Load and parse action.yml once at the test boundary. Pass the parsed manifest into pure lookup helpers, or define and handle an explicit manifest-load error type that covers I/O and YAML failures. Make file-backed result queries return an explicit success/error result instead of leaking raw environmental exceptions. Keep process execution and ambient-environment reads behind the harness boundary, with the executor and environment supplied as explicit dependencies. Add boundary tests for read-only queries, directory creation, unreadable manifests, invalid YAML, and inaccessible result files.

@coderabbitai The three pre-merge warnings are addressed in 31e6a32.

Observability. The binstall-unavailable gap you named is closed in afa8138, and this round closes the two that remained.

  • A refused input now reports install-mdtablefix.result=invalid-input. The documentation promised exactly one result line per run; validation rejections were emitting none.
  • A bin-dir the runner cannot create or enter is now refused the same way. It previously exited bare under set -e, with no annotation and no metric. The property tests found that one, not reasoning about it: an absolute candidate outside the sandbox failed mkdir and the run ended silently.
  • On the unbounded-output point you are right, and it is now bounded. Whatever sits in bin-dir came out of the caller's own cache, so only the first line of its --version output, truncated to 120 characters, is compared or logged.

I have kept bin-dir itself in the annotations. It is the caller's own input echoed back, it holds no secret, and a version mismatch is not diagnosable without knowing which executable reported it.

Property tests. A new Hypothesis module states the input grammar from the documentation and checks the shipped fragment against it. Generated version strings and bin-dir values must be admitted exactly when the documentation admits them, and no rejection may be silent. Writing the oracle from the documentation rather than from the fragment is the point: a fragment that drifts from what is documented fails. Absolute candidates are rooted inside each example's own sandbox, so the property is about the grammar and not about what the host permits at the filesystem root.

Linked issues. Answered on the issue rather than in code, since the issue is what is wrong: #442 (comment). #442 expects macOS to be served by a prebuilt asset. Measured against the pinned cargo-binstall 1.22.0, --targets aarch64-apple-darwin fails closed, because the v0.5.0 release publishes only Linux gnu tarballs plus FreeBSD and the crate's binstall override is gated on cfg(target_os = "linux", target_env = "gnu"). macOS is therefore in Windows' position, the action fails closed on both, and the macos-15 job asserts that failure rather than a version. The corrected acceptance criteria are on the issue.

@leynos Accept the fixes in 31e6a32.

Verify that input_error() now reports both the annotation and install-mdtablefix.result=invalid-input. Verify that inaccessible bin-dir paths route through the same failure boundary.

Keep the 120-character, first-line limit before cached executable output is compared or logged. Keep bin-dir in the mismatch annotation. The caller supplies that input, and it is required for diagnosis.

Keep the independent Hypothesis grammar oracle. It verifies the documented contract instead of restating the shell fragment.

Treat macOS as unsupported until the pinned mdtablefix release publishes a compatible prebuilt asset. The platform gate, tests, and documentation now match that requirement.

No remaining pre-merge finding applies from this review. Runtime execution was not performed in this review environment.

Every repository whose `make check-fmt` shells out to mdtablefix carried its
own installer step, and the shapes had diverged: some fell back to `cargo
install`, which is a source build in CI. This adds one hardened installer to
sit alongside install-nixie and install-whitaker.

The action validates its inputs, rejects a runner with no prebuilt release
before the cache is consulted, probes bin-dir and PATH for the pinned version,
obtains cargo-binstall only when `cargo binstall -V` fails, then runs a
binstall that cannot compile. Each run writes exactly one bounded
`install-mdtablefix.result` metric.

cargo-binstall is probed by running it rather than by looking for a name on
PATH, because a Cargo subcommand shim can exist and still be unusable (#420).
A composite action cannot condition a `uses:` step on a shell result, so the
probe publishes a step output and the pinned upstream action carries an `if:`
over it.

The install passes `--bin-dir '{ bin }{ binary-ext }'`. mdtablefix 0.5.0
declares `bin-dir = "."`, which cargo-binstall 1.22 rejects with "bin-dir
configuration provided generates empty source path"; with the compile strategy
correctly disabled the install then fails outright (leynos/mdtablefix#458).
Verified against the pinned binstall release: without the override the install
fails, with it the executable reports mdtablefix 0.5.0.

Contrary to issue #442, macOS gets no prebuilt asset either. The v0.5.0
release publishes Linux gnu x86_64 and aarch64 tarballs plus FreeBSD, and the
crate's binstall override is gated on `cfg(target_os = "linux", target_env =
"gnu")`. macOS therefore fails closed exactly as Windows does, and the
runner-backed macos-15 job asserts that failure rather than a version.

The stubbed cargo in the behavioural tests refuses to install without the
bin-dir override, so dropping the override fails the suite rather than passing
locally and failing on a runner. The ubuntu-latest job proves the cached
outcome by putting a failing cargo stub on PATH before a second invocation.

Refs #442.

Two CI failures on fde5d89.

The spelling gate rejected "neutralise": this estate's typos configuration is
en-GB-oxendict, which takes the -ize ending. It passed locally because
`make spelling` feeds typos from `git ls-files`, so the new files were invisible
to it until they were committed. Run it again after the first commit, not
before.

CodeScene flagged `run_scenario` as a Complex Method. Its three jobs are now
separate: `_build_sandbox` lays out the directories, stubs and fixtures,
`_build_environment` assembles what the fragments observe, and `_execute_steps`
walks the manifest. A `_Sandbox` record carries the paths between them instead
of ten locals.

Two pre-merge errors from round two.

The output bounding had no behavioural cover. The stubbed binstall now copies a
prepared body rather than printing a fixed line, so a scenario can name exactly
what the installed executable prints and whether it is written at all. Five
tests follow: a report spanning several lines does not fail a good install; an
overlong report fails, and the annotation carries the first 120 characters and
not the whole line; a cached executable reporting too much is reinstalled
rather than believed; a cached executable may print more than its version line;
and a `cargo binstall` that exits zero having installed nothing is noticed
rather than trusted. That last one is a real cargo-binstall outcome, and the
action reported it correctly already, but nothing said so.

`ScenarioResult` now keeps everything the installed executable prints and
derives the version from it, and it runs the executable rather than reading its
text, so a fixture is observed the way the action observes it.

`FragmentEnvironment.output_file` was already reduced to a query in the
previous commit; a test now asserts it creates nothing. `load_manifest` parses
`action.yml` once per session instead of on each of the dozens of calls the
suite makes; the document is read-only by contract.

@coderabbitai The two pre-merge errors are addressed in cbe7262, on top of the six inline findings answered in c4e238f.

Testing (Overall). You were right that the output bounding had no behavioural cover. The stubbed binstall now copies a prepared executable body rather than printing a fixed line, so a scenario names exactly what the installed executable prints and whether it is written at all. Five tests follow:

  • A report spanning several lines does not fail an otherwise good install, because only the first line carries the version.
  • An overlong report fails the job, and the annotation carries the first 120 characters and demonstrably not the whole line.
  • A cached executable reporting an overlong line is reinstalled rather than believed, so the probe is bounded too, not only the verify step.
  • A cached executable may print more than its version line and still count as a cache hit, with no call to cargo.
  • A cargo binstall that exits zero having installed nothing is noticed. The action already reported that correctly, but nothing said so.

ScenarioResult now keeps everything the installed executable prints and derives the version from it, and it runs the executable rather than reading its text, so a fixture is observed the way the action observes it.

Unit Architecture. FragmentEnvironment.output_file was reduced to a pure path join in c4e238f, with the directory created once in __post_init__; a test now asserts the query creates nothing and leaves the directory's contents unchanged. load_manifest parses action.yml once per session rather than on each of the dozens of calls the suite makes, and the returned document is read-only by contract.

Linked Issues. This is the option your own resolution offers second, and it is the correct one: macOS cannot be installed, so the issue is what needed updating. #442 (comment) records the measurements against the pinned cargo-binstall 1.22.0, including that --targets aarch64-apple-darwin fails closed, that the v0.5.0 release publishes only Linux gnu tarballs plus FreeBSD, and that the crate's own binstall override is gated on cfg(target_os = "linux", target_env = "gnu"). It states the corrected acceptance criteria: Linux gnu on x86_64 and aarch64 install from the prebuilt archive, every other runner fails closed with no-prebuilt. Adding a macOS installation path is not available to implement; there is no asset to install.

@leynos Accept the fixes in c4e238f and cbe7262.

Keep the first-line and 120-character limit in both version-read paths. The action applies this limit before it compares or logs cached and installed executable output.

Keep the five behavioural tests. They cover multiline reports, overlong reports, cached executable reports, and a successful cargo binstall that writes no executable.

Keep macOS and Windows fail-closed. The platform gate permits only Linux/X64 and Linux/ARM64 before it probes the cache.

Keep FragmentEnvironment.output_file() as a path-only query. Keep manifest parsing cached per test session.

Static source inspection verified these changes. This review did not execute repository code or tests.

CodeScene flagged duplication in the install tests and a complex conditional in
`parse_outputs`.

The install tests had written the same three-line metric assertion nineteen
times, each with its own slightly different message. Five named helpers now say
what is being checked: a metric is present, a metric is the only one, the
failure was annotated, the run installed and verified a version, and nothing
was left behind. The tests read as their intent rather than as their mechanism,
and a new one cannot invent a twentieth phrasing.

`parse_outputs` asked whether a line opens a heredoc inside its loop condition.
That question is now `_opens_heredoc`, where the reason a `<<` after an `=` is
not an opener can be stated where it is decided.

A run that fails closed on macOS or Windows now names
leynos/mdtablefix#459 in its annotation, and the action README and users' guide
say the same. That issue asks mdtablefix for macOS and Windows release assets
and for its binstall metadata to stop being gated on `linux-gnu`, which is what
the platform gate here is waiting for. Someone meeting the failure should not
have to work out what would fix it.

The macOS job also records the shell the no-ERR-trap rule was decided under:
`$BASH_VERSION`, `bash --version`, which bash is on PATH, and whether an `ERR`
trap fires there today. The manifest test forbids ERR traps because one did not
run on this platform; that rule should rest on a measurement anyone can re-read
in a log, not on a recollection.

The probe added in the previous commit called the failing command from an `if`
condition. Errexit is suppressed there, and with it the `ERR` trap, on every
Bash ever released, so `not-run` on macOS said nothing about macOS. It would
have reported `not-run` on Bash 5 too.

The failing command now sits at the top level of its own script and is run as
`bash <script>`, which is exactly where `cargo binstall` sat in the action's
fragment. The Linux job runs the same probe, so the two logs can be read
against each other rather than one being interpreted alone.

Bash 3.2 on macos-15 fires the `ERR` trap for a failing builtin at the top level
of a script, so the version alone does not explain what happened here. The
action's fragment differed in two ways from that probe: the failing command was
external, and it was the last command in the script. Bash has long replaced
itself with the last command in some cases, which would discard the trap with
the shell.

Both jobs now run three probes that differ only in what fails and where: a
builtin last, an external command last, and an external command followed by a
no-op. Locally on Bash 5.3 all three fire. Whatever the macOS log says, it says
it about the case the action was actually in.

A runner writes a composite `run:` fragment to a file and executes that file.
The harness passed the same text to `bash -c`. Those are not the same shell
invocation, and the whole point of the harness is that a fragment behaves as it
will on a runner, so it now writes the fragment out and runs the file.

This is also the remaining candidate for the macOS failure. All three of
yesterday's probes fire on Bash 3.2 when read from a file, so the version alone
explains nothing; the only untested difference between the probes and the
action's fragment is the `-c`. Both jobs now run each case twice, once from a
file and once from a command string, so the next log either names the cause or
rules the last hypothesis out.

I claimed Bash 3.2 does not run `ERR` traps and put that in the action's
comments, its changelog, its README, the developers' guide, the pull request,
and a manifest test forbidding the idiom across this action. It is not true, and
the claim was doing real damage: it was on its way to an issue against
`install-whitaker`'s seven traps.

Six probes on `macos-15` and `ubuntu-latest`, differing only in what fails, where,
and how the script is invoked, put the cause in exactly one cell. `bash -c` with
an external command last, on Bash 3.2, does not run the trap. Every other
combination fires on both platforms, including a file with an external command
last, and including `bash -c` when any command follows. Bash 3.2 replaces itself
with that last command and the trap goes with the shell; Bash 5 suppresses the
optimization when a trap is set.

A runner writes a composite fragment to a file. It was the harness that used
`bash -c`, so the failure I attributed to macOS was a harness artefact, and
`install-whitaker` is fine. The harness now runs fragments from a file, as the
previous commit made it, and two tests hold that: one asserts a fragment's `$0`
names a file, and one asserts a fragment's `ERR` trap fires when its last
command fails. Either would have caught this.

The manifest test forbidding `ERR` traps is gone; it banned an idiom the rest of
the repository uses, on evidence that did not survive. The action keeps its
explicit status check, which is no more code and is invariant to how the
fragment is invoked, and now says that rather than claiming a platform bug. The
workflow probes are gone with the question they answered.

Correction to an earlier claim in this pull request, and to its description.

I said Bash 3.2 does not run ERR traps, and built a manifest test on it forbidding the idiom. That is false. Bash 3.2 runs them.

Six probes on macos-15 and ubuntu-latest, differing only in what fails, where, and how the script is invoked, put the cause in exactly one cell:

Case Bash 3.2 (macOS) Bash 5.2 (Linux)
file, builtin last fired fired
file, external last fired fired
file, external then no-op fired fired
bash -c, builtin last fired fired
bash -c, external last not run fired
bash -c, external then no-op fired fired

Bash 3.2 replaces itself with the last command of a bash -c string when that command is external, so the trap goes with the shell. Bash 5 suppresses that optimization when a trap is set, and any following command defeats it.

A runner writes a composite run: fragment to a file and executes that file. Only the Python harness used bash -c. So the macOS failure was a harness artefact, and install-whitaker's seven ERR traps are fine on a runner.

What changed in cad7551:

  • The harness runs fragments from a file, which is what a harness for runner fidelity should always have done.
  • Two tests hold that line: one asserts a fragment's $0 names a file, one asserts a fragment's ERR trap fires when its last command fails. Either would have caught this.
  • The manifest test forbidding ERR traps is removed. It banned an idiom the rest of the repository uses, on evidence that did not survive.
  • The claim is corrected in the action's comment, its changelog and README, the developers' guide, and this pull request's description.
  • The action keeps its explicit status check. It is no more code than the trap and is invariant to how the fragment is invoked, but it no longer pretends to work around a platform bug.
  • The six probes are removed from the test workflow along with the question they answered.

The finding is recorded in docs/developers-guide.md, under the fragment harness, with the measurement.

The developers' guide said folding install-whitaker's private harness copy into
the shared module was "a separate change", which is true and unhelpful. It now
names issue #449, and says what is still wrong with that copy: it invokes
fragments with `bash -c`.
