Bump patched audit pins and except zod for 14 days - #562
wildside's Audit step fails on main: pnpm audit reports 20 advisories that are not in security/audit-exceptions.json. This blocks every PR's build job, including #559 (placement) and #553.
Patched releases exist for all but zod, so the pinned versions move (in both resolutions and pnpm.overrides, with pnpm-lock.yaml and bun.lock regenerated; the diff outside the manifests and locks is the ledger entry and its contract):
The Rust half of the same Audit step also failed, on three lock-only advisories, fixed with cargo update -p ctutils -p rustls-webpki -p webpki-roots@1.0.6 (only Cargo.lock changes): RUSTSEC-2026-0385 (ctutils 0.4.2 to 0.4.5), RUSTSEC-2026-0382 (rustls-webpki 0.103.15 to 0.103.16) and RUSTSEC-2026-0381 (webpki-roots 1.0.6 to 1.0.11). make rust-audit now reports no vulnerabilities (only the existing unmaintained-crate warnings).
zod GHSA-mrhx-c7xc-m3w5 (memory exhaustion validating a large unconstrained array) is patched only in zod 4.6.6, and the workspace is on zod 3.25.76, so the fix is a major-version migration, tracked in #561. This PR adds a ledger entry ZOD_ARRAY_MEMORY_EXHAUSTION_2026_10 that expires on 2026-11-07 (14 days). Exploitability: the only array schema is UsersSchema (packages/types/src/user.ts), applied by customFetchParsed to responses from the project's own backend in the user's browser, so an attacker would need to control the backend response, and the impact is memory exhaustion of one tab. The other path, puppeteer > chromium-bidi > zod, is build-time tooling.
zod_exception_test.py is the removal invariant the ledger contract requires, and it reads reach from two places. Registry packages that depend on zod come from bun.lock's package table, which never lists the workspace's own packages: today that is chromium-bidi only, and the entry is void once any other registry package depends on zod or once bun.lock resolves only zod 4.6.6 or later. The workspace's own use (frontend-pwa and packages/types declare zod ^3, for UsersSchema and the fetcher) is read from the workspace manifests, and the entry is void if a different set of workspaces declares zod. The existing extract-zip, picomatch and braces entries are untouched.
Mutation proof (each alone, reverted): threshold set so the migration counts as landed fails test_the_zod_exception_is_void_once_only_patched_releases_resolve; an empty permitted-dependents set fails test_the_zod_exception_is_void_once_anything_else_pulls_it; dropping packages/types from the permitted workspaces fails test_the_zod_exception_is_void_once_another_workspace_declares_zod; dropping the id from the registry in audit_exception_test.py fails test_every_audit_exception_has_a_tested_removal_invariant.
Gates, run sequentially: make audit-node (pnpm audit "All reported advisories are covered", audit:validate valid, bun audit "No vulnerabilities found"), make lockfile (stable), make check-fmt, make lint-frontend, make typecheck, make test-frontend, make lint-python, make test-workflow-contracts (610 passed, 1 skipped). Only Cargo.lock changed on the Rust side, so clippy and the Rust tests were left to CI's build job.
Open PRs on the same files: #551, #494, #396 and #395 (Dependabot npm/bun bumps touching the lockfiles; they rebase).
Summary by Sourcery
Refresh dependency audit pins and add a guarded, 14-day exception for the unresolved zod advisory while its major-version migration is tracked.
Bug Fixes:
Update vulnerable JavaScript and Rust dependency pins to patched releases so the Node and Rust audit checks pass without reported vulnerabilities.
Add a time-limited zod audit exception for the current major-version migration, with removal invariants covering resolved dependents and workspace declarations.
Enhancements:
Extend workflow contract utilities and tests to safely parse repository JSON and validate the zod exception's stated reach assumptions.
Documentation:
Update frontend stack documentation to reflect the Vite and Vitest version changes.
Tests:
Add contract tests that ensure the zod exception is removed after the migration or when its dependency and workspace assumptions change.
Chores:
Regenerate JavaScript and Rust lockfiles for the dependency updates.
pnpm audit failed on 20 new advisories. Every one except zod has a
patched release, so the pinned versions move: vite 7.3.7, vitest
4.1.12 (which carries @vitest/mocker 4.1.12), markdown-it 14.3.3,
dompurify 3.4.17, ip-address 10.7.4 and fast-uri 3.1.9, in both
resolutions and pnpm.overrides, with pnpm-lock.yaml and bun.lock
regenerated.
GHSA-mrhx-c7xc-m3w5 is patched only in zod 4.6.6, and the workspace is
on zod 3, so the fix is a major-version migration tracked in
#561. A ledger entry with a
14-day expiry covers the gap, with its exploitability argument and a
contract test that voids it once zod 4.6.6 resolves or any other
package starts depending on zod.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Update Vite and Vitest dependency ranges, refresh patched JavaScript dependency resolutions, and update the corresponding pnpm overrides.
Add a time-limited exception for Zod advisory GHSA-mrhx-c7xc-m3w5. The exception expires on 7 November 2026 and tracks the major-version migration in issue #561.
Add workflow contract tests that check Zod’s resolved versions, permitted registry dependents, and workspace manifests that declare Zod.
Update Cargo.lock for the reported ctutils, rustls-webpki, and webpki-roots advisories.
Validation
The PR description reports passing make audit-node, make lockfile, formatting, lint, typecheck, frontend tests, and workflow contract tests (610 passed, 1 skipped). Rust clippy and tests were left to CI. These results and the reported green CI status are not independently confirmed here.
Walkthrough
The PR updates development dependency ranges and pinned package resolutions. It also records a time-limited Zod advisory exception and adds workflow tests for its removal conditions.
Vite and Vitest development dependency ranges change. Pinned resolutions and overrides for DOMPurify, fast-uri, ip-address and markdown-it also change. The root Vite override is updated.
Zod audit exception controls
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Record and validate the Zod exception security/audit-exceptions.json, tests/workflow_contracts/audit_exception_test.py, tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py
The audit ledger adds a Zod array memory-exhaustion exception for frontend-pwa, with an expiry date of 2026-11-07. Workflow tests register its removal invariant and check resolved Zod versions, registry dependents and declaring workspaces.
Possibly related issues
Issue 561 tracks the Zod 3-to-4 migration for the same advisory. This PR adds the temporary exception but does not perform the migration.
The pnpm lockfile may not match the workspace Vite version ranges, which can break frozen installs in CI or developer setup. Regenerate the lockfile or confirm that a frozen install succeeds before merging. The Zod exception tests have minor gaps that can be handled alongside this fix.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 6 functions across 2 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)
Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
PASS — The new contract tests are substantive and exercise the changed audit-exception behaviour. tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py:88-107 reads the real bun.lock and fails when all resolved zod versions reach 4.6.6; lines 110-129 reject new registry dependents; lines 133-150 compare the actual workspace manifests with the permitted set. tests/workflow_contracts/audit_exception_test.py:148-160,232-246 also requires the new ledger entry to have a registered removal invariant. These checks catch the plausible migration, dependency-tree, workspace, and registration mutations. The remaining changes update third-party dependency versions and lockfiles, so the custom check does not require product tests for them.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
Pass. Treat this PR as internal dependency and audit-contract maintenance, not new or changed user-facing functionality. The reviewed diff changes dependency manifests and lockfiles, the audit exception ledger, and workflow-contract tests only. It changes no application source, API contract, README, or docs/users-guide.md. Therefore, no user-facing documentation update is required.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
PASS. The new module tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py has a module docstring at lines 1-15 that explains its purpose, utility, and relationship to security/audit-exceptions.json, bun.lock, workspace manifests, and audit_exception_test.py. The modified tests/workflow_contracts/audit_exception_test.py retains its module docstring at lines 1-7. The other changed files are data, lockfiles, or package manifests, not source modules.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
Pass. Add tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py at the repository audit boundary. It checks vulnerable Zod resolution, unexpected registry dependents, and the exact workspace manifests that declare Zod. Register the exception in tests/workflow_contracts/audit_exception_test.py so every ledger entry has a removal invariant. The test-workflow-contracts target collects this file, and the dependency-only updates do not require new application-level end-to-end tests.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
Pass the property/proof check. The change adds three direct removal-invariant tests in tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py:88-147. They inspect all resolved zod versions, all lockfile dependents, and all workspace manifests. The permitted sets are small and explicit: chromium-bidi is the only registry dependent, while frontend-pwa and packages/types declare zod (bun.lock:634,1474,1524; package manifests). Parameterized or property-based generation would not add useful coverage for this repository-state contract. The change introduces no lemma or formal proof assumption that needs exhaustive proof.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
Pass this check. The pull request changes dependency manifests and lockfiles, plus Python workflow-contract tests. It introduces no Rust or TypeScript source or compile-time behaviour, so no trybuild or language-specific compile-time test is required. The new tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py uses focused semantic assertions for the ledger, Bun lockfile, dependents, and workspace manifests. It does not add UI or user-facing structured output. Snapshot tests would add brittleness without testing a meaningful output contract.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
Pass the Domain Architecture check. The pull request changes dependency versions, lockfiles, an audit-exception ledger entry, and workflow-contract tests only. It does not change domain models, commands, repositories, adapters, transport handling, persistence logic, or infrastructure boundaries. No new domain dependency on framework or adapter concerns is introduced.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes dependency versions, lockfiles, the audit exception ledger, and workflow contract tests only. It does not change application control flow, service boundaries, queues, retries, storage, or production telemetry. It introduces no new production failure mode that requires logs, metrics, tracing, or alerts.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
The new contract module hides fallible filesystem and parsing work behind query-shaped APIs. ledger_ids() and packages() call Path.read_text() and JSON parsing without an explicit error boundary at lines 51-64. _workspaces_declaring_zod() discovers files, reads them, parses JSON, and applies policy while returning only frozenset[str] at lines 66-85. It also uses the global REPOSITORY_ROOT. This makes I/O, parsing failure, dependency injection, and responsibility boundaries less visible. The repository already provides repository_reading.read_text() and RepositoryReadError for this boundary.
Resolution
Move repository reads and JSON parsing into an explicit fixture or loader boundary. Use an injected reader and map I/O, decoding, and parsing failures to a named error that includes the path. Make _workspaces_declaring_zod accept parsed manifest data and remain a pure policy query. Apply the same boundary to ledger_ids() and packages(). Add tests for unreadable and malformed inputs, and keep the policy tests focused on supplied data.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
The pull request changes the declared Vite range from ^7.3.5 to ^7.3.7 and the Vitest range from ^4.1.11 to ^4.1.12 in both package manifests. The head leaves docs/developers-guide.md unchanged and still documents Vite ^7.3.5 and Vitest ^4.1.8 at lines 584-586. This does not clearly document the changed tooling as required.
Resolution
Update docs/developers-guide.md to document the current Vite and Vitest ranges (^7.3.7 and ^4.1.12). Synchronize the current-toolchain references in docs/v2a-front-end-stack.md where they describe the declared front-end tooling, then verify documentation checks pass.

The latest CodeRabbit review was published after your verdict request, at 16:06 UTC. Its three threads have no replies in the returned data.
Address these remaining points:
Unit Architecture: In tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py, _workspaces_declaring_zod() still combines filesystem reads, JSON parsing, and policy checks. Move loading to an explicit boundary and pass parsed data into the policy query. Use path-bearing errors for read and parse failures. This matches the repository’s documented contract-test architecture.
Zod coverage: At Line 83, the workspace scan still omits optionalDependencies. Include that field so a new optional Zod consumer cannot bypass the exception safeguard.
Typing: Undocumented typ.Any annotations remain at Line 54 and Line 81. This is a non-blocking cleanup.
Do not treat the Vite lockfile finding as a confirmed frozen-install defect. The root pnpm.overrides pins Vite to 7.3.7, which the original finding did not account for. Verify pnpm install --frozen-lockfile with the project’s pnpm version before changing importer specifiers. I did not execute an install or repository tests.
Clear the Unit Architecture error and the Zod coverage gap, then request a fresh verdict. This reply does not change GitHub’s approval status or resolve threads.
📝 I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.
zod_exception_test now opens every file in a fixture through
repository_reading (new parse_json), so a missing or malformed file
fails with its path, and the workspace query takes parsed manifests and
opens nothing. It also reads optionalDependencies, replaces typ.Any
with a TypedDict and narrowed tables, and the docs name the current
Vite and Vitest ranges.
@coderabbitai At the latest head, the Unit Architecture error row is addressed: zod_exception_test.py now opens every file in a fixture through repository_reading (with a new parse_json that names the path on a parse failure), and the workspace query takes parsed manifests and opens nothing. The Developer Documentation warning is addressed by syncing the Vite ^7.3.7 and Vitest ^4.1.12 ranges in docs/developers-guide.md and docs/v2a-front-end-stack.md. The Zod coverage gap (optionalDependencies) and the typ.Any typing finding are fixed, and the Vite lockfile importer finding is argued in its thread (the root override pins 7.3.7, so the frozen install expects that specifier). Does this clear the Unit Architecture error row and the open findings at the current head?
@buzzybee-df12Treat the reported code findings as addressed at head bfa83d714e54a838600a76958d04e4238b9e2449. Distinguish that verdict from the published check state.
Item

Unit Architecture
Addressed in source. Fixtures load repository files through repository_reading. parse_json raises RepositoryReadError with the path. workspaces_declaring_zod takes parsed manifests and performs no I/O.
Developer Documentation
Addressed. Both documents now show Vite ^7.3.7 and Vitest ^4.1.12.
Zod coverage
Addressed. The scan includes optionalDependencies, with a regression test.
Typing
Addressed. Ledger records use TypedDict; manifests use narrowed dependency tables.
Vite importer finding
Already withdrawn and resolved. Keep specifier: 7.3.7 because the root override pins that value.
Review threads
All three threads are resolved. No open thread remains.
The published Unit Architecture error row has not yet cleared. The walkthrough still shows one error and one warning from the review of 120108ff…. 📝 I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.
@coderabbitai The latest head changes one line in tests/workflow_contracts/zod_exception_test.py: _read_json_object now returns typ.cast("dict[str, object]", value) after its isinstance check, which clears the ty invalid-return-type error in CI's type check. There are no other changes since your last verdict. Does the Unit Architecture error row, and every open finding, stay cleared at this head?
@wafflecat-df12Keep the previous source verdict: all previously reported code findings remain addressed or withdrawn at eab384504ad07045eb175291fbb88fc1979bfaa6. Distinguish this from the published check state.
I verified that the only change since bfa83d7 is the cast in _read_json_object. The cast follows the isinstance(value, dict) check. It adds no I/O and preserves the fixture boundary and path-bearing errors. It does not reopen the Unit Architecture finding.

ZOD_ARRAY_MEMORY_EXHAUSTION_2026_10that expires on 2026-11-07 (14 days). Exploitability: the only array schema isUsersSchema(packages/types/src/user.ts), applied bycustomFetchParsedto responses from the project's own backend in the user's browser, so an attacker would need to control the backend response, and the impact is memory exhaustion of one tab. The other path, puppeteer > chromium-bidi > zod, is build-time tooling.zod_exception_test.pyis the removal invariant the ledger contract requires, and it reads reach from two places. Registry packages that depend on zod come frombun.lock's package table, which never lists the workspace's own packages: today that ischromium-bidionly, and the entry is void once any other registry package depends on zod or oncebun.lockresolves only zod 4.6.6 or later. The workspace's own use (frontend-pwaandpackages/typesdeclare zod^3, forUsersSchemaand the fetcher) is read from the workspace manifests, and the entry is void if a different set of workspaces declares zod. The existing extract-zip, picomatch and braces entries are untouched.Mutation proof (each alone, reverted): threshold set so the migration counts as landed fails
