Summary

Two related fixes for Figma parity:

1. Scale tool defaults to center (matches Figma)

  • Changed default from top-left to center in
  • When using the Scale tool (K), it now scales from center by default
  • Updated 6 scale_tool_tests that assumed the old default to explicitly set

2. Prototype player re-runs auto layout on variant change

  • Added call in in
  • When a button variant changes on hover (via + ), the prototype player now re-flows auto layout parents
  • This ensures centered variants stay centered when they resize

Testing

  • All 1090+ engine tests pass
  • All 64 UI/presenter tests pass
  • Windows executables rebuilt with fixes

Files Changed

    • scale_anchor default
    • test updates
    • layout_page() call

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Matching interactive components across frames now stay synchronized when a prototype changes variants. Enable Reset Component State on an interaction to keep their variant states independent.
    • Smart Animate now interpolates position, size, rotation, opacity, fills, strokes, and corner radius between variants.
  • Improvements
    • Page auto layout now updates after prototype interactions are applied.
    • The scale tool now defaults to a center anchor for consistent scaling behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Prototyping guidance now describes interactive component state sharing, reset behavior, and Smart Animate interpolation.

kankangain and others added 10 commits October 23, 2026 16:27
- Add reset_component_state field to Interaction (Figma's "Reset component state" checkbox)
- Implement state sharing across frames for matching component instances in prototype player
- Add resetComponentState parameter to proto.interaction.add and proto.interaction.set commands
- Add tests: smart animate interpolation, state sharing across frames, reset state disables sharing
- Update prototyping-parity.md with new features and test references
- Fix rustfmt formatting for perform/perform_at functions
- Add missing reset_component_state field to Interaction constructors in tests
- Fix unused variable warning (_knob)
- Add missing 8th argument to perform() calls in tests

[WIP] Fix failing GitHub Actions job test (ubuntu-latest)
… re-runs auto layout on variant change

- ToolState.scale_anchor default changed from top-left (0,0) to center (1,1) in crates/engine/src/tools.rs
- Updated 6 scale_tool_tests that assumed old default to explicitly set anchor='tl'
- Added layout_page() call in Presenter.relayout() so variant hover (ChangeTo + Smart Animate) re-flows auto layout parents
- Windows executables rebuilt with fixes

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a reset option for component-variant state sharing in prototype interactions, sets an explicit scale-tool default, adds a Linux CI dependency, and adds project reference documentation.

Changes: Interactive Component Variants

Layer / File(s) Summary
Interaction option and command support
crates/doc/src/proto.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/proto.rs, crates/format/src/rest/proto.rs
Interactions gain reset_component_state, defaulting to false. Prototype commands accept the option when adding or editing interactions. Legacy and imported interactions set it to false.
Prototype-player variant updates
crates/ui-egui/src/present.rs
The presenter passes the reset setting through action execution. ChangeTo synchronizes matching component instances when the setting is false and skips peer synchronization when it is true. Relayout runs page layout after prototype interactions.
Variant behavior tests and documentation
crates/ui-egui/src/present_behaviour_tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/present_variables_tests.rs, crates/doc/src/colors_tests.rs, crates/doc/src/tests.rs, crates/collab/src/merge_list_tests.rs, crates/format/src/fig/export_tests.rs, docs/prototyping-parity.md
Tests cover smart-animation interpolation, variant sharing across frames, and independent variant state when reset is enabled. Test interactions initialize the option. The documentation describes these behaviors.

Scale Tool Defaults

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tool state default and scaling tests
crates/engine/src/tools.rs, crates/engine/src/scale_tool_tests.rs
ToolState has a manual default with a center scale anchor. Scale-tool tests set the top-left anchor explicitly.

Linux CI Dependency

The Linux dependency installation adds build-essential.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a3ff8

Variant changes can unexpectedly update other instances, and auto-layout can remain stale when presenting a later page. Whole-interaction replacement can also lose the reset option. Resolve these behavior issues before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a3ff8

Variant changes now affect matching instances throughout a prototype, but the inspected mutations remain separate from the edited document. No new privileged access was identified. Large or nested documents and preservation of the new option across format conversions remain areas of uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A document author can cause a triggered variant change to affect matching instances across screens and pages, including off-screen or nested instances present during enumeration. The new propagation remains within one presenter document and the exact component set; no cross-document or tenant lookup occurs in this path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The added ChangeTo branch changes component references and invokes existing instance synchronization on private runtime state. It does not directly invoke URL, file, collaboration, credential, or tool authority. URL opening remains a separate action guarded by the existing openable check.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Shared updates are sequential rather than an all-or-nothing transaction. Existing synchronization guards reject missing or recursively invalid main components, bound nested rebuilding, and clean failed child insertions. Private copies and whole-copy restoration limit state corruption to the prototype runtime, but document-wide rebuilding and added layout increase document-controlled work; resource amplification has not been measured.

Accept resetComponentState in whole-interaction input.

When a caller replaces an interaction with JSON that uses resetComponentState, serde ignores that key and defaults reset_component_state to false. The add and patch commands use the camelCase spelling, so whole replacement can silently enable state sharing instead of disabling it. Add a serde alias for resetComponentState.

Lay out the presented frame’s page.

When the presented frame belongs to a page other than d.pages.first(), relayout reflows the first page instead. A ChangeTo action on the presented page can then change an instance’s size without reflowing its auto-layout parent. Resolve the page from self.current before calling layout_page.

Restrict state sharing to instances on other top-level frames.

The documented behavior is state sharing across matching instances in different frames. The current collection includes same-frame instances and instances nested in component masters.

Use Document::top_level_frame and exclude component/component-set descendants. Add a regression test with two matching instances on one frame.

Thank you @kankangain for this. I'm closing it rather than merging, for a few reasons. It adds a 213-line MEMORY.md of agent notes, including a section telling agents to default to a third-party tool for decisions, which doesn't belong in the repo. The new state sharing switches every instance of a component set in the whole document from one checkbox. The first-page layout call is a workaround for what #1135 (now landing) fixes properly. And making centre the Scale tool's default changes how corner handles drag without a source. If you'd like to try again, separate PRs for the auto layout re-run in the player and the variant fixes, with a cited source for the Scale default, would be very welcome.
