Layout-only extraction from #1334: reverse flow, stretch, wrapped-line spacing, percentage grid tracks, signed padding, per-item margins and alignment.

Includes commands, inspectors, serialization, .fig compatibility and regressions. Default zero margins are omitted from saved nodes. Reversed CSS justification matches canvas alignment; percentage grids never use negative track space, and .fig exports resolved pixel sizes instead of fractional pixels. New layout labels use translations.

Overlay, portable-font and long-word rendering changes are separate. Owner review of the model extensions is still required.

Validation: full cargo xtask ci passed on Windows (formatting, clippy, workspace tests, layers, attribution, localization and WASM). Uses the CI-pinned external craft-fonts input at 43913056; no font files are added.

Walkthrough

The change adds reverse flow, margins, per-item alignment, stretch, wrapped-line distribution, and percentage grid tracks. It also adds toggle-overlay actions and document-owned font persistence with scoped font selection. Related UI, import/export, rendering, tests, and documentation are updated.

Changes: Auto-layout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Layout properties and calculations
crates/doc/src/props.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/props.rs, crates/layout/src/*
Layout properties and command parsing add reverse flow, signed padding and margins, per-item alignment, stretch, wrapped-line distribution, and percentage tracks. The layout engine and tests cover the resulting flow and grid calculations.
Import, export, and generated layout data
crates/format/src/rest/props.rs, crates/format/src/fig/*, crates/engine/src/codegen.rs, crates/engine/src/devinspect.rs, crates/engine/src/components.rs
REST and .fig handling, CSS generation, inspection, and component overrides now account for the new layout properties. .fig round-trip tests cover selected layout settings and grid tracks.
Editor controls and parity records
crates/ui-egui/src/layout_panel.rs, crates/ui-egui/locales/*, docs/auto-layout-parity.md, ROADMAP.md
The layout panel exposes the new controls. The parity and roadmap records describe the added layout work and related tests.

Toggle overlay

Layer / File(s) Summary
Action model and presentation
crates/doc/src/proto.rs, crates/doc/src/colors.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/proto.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/present.rs
The action model adds ToggleOverlay. Presentation opens a closed destination or closes a matching open overlay. Tests cover toggle behavior and duplicate overlay entries.
Editor and format handling
crates/ui-egui/src/proto_panel.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/proto_editor.rs, crates/format/src/fig/export.rs, crates/ui-egui/locales/*, docs/prototyping-parity.md
The editor configures toggle-overlay actions. .fig export approximates them as ordinary overlays and emits a warning. Locale entries and prototyping documentation are added or updated.

Document-owned fonts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Font ownership and archive persistence
crates/doc/src/lib.rs, crates/format/src/lib.rs, crates/format/src/large_tests.rs
Documents and snapshots store embedded fonts and licenses. Archive loading and saving validate font data, preserve snapshot ownership, enforce limits, and report missing or invalid fonts.
Scoped font lookup and text layout
crates/text/src/fontdb.rs, crates/text/src/layout.rs, crates/text/src/lib.rs, crates/text/src/behaviour_tests.rs
Text operations can use document-scoped fonts. Layout cache keys include the document font signature, and tests cover scoped lookup and unbreakable words.
Command, render, and import integration
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/measure.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, docs/file-format-parity.md
Commands, measurement, rendering, and UI frames enter the document font context. Imports merge fonts and return warnings for skipped fonts. The format parity document records the storage and selection behavior.

UI action result handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guarded action handling
crates/ui-egui/src/branch_ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/comments.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dev_compare.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/home_recents.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/style_picker.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/versions.rs
Match arms use guards for successful operations and explicit fallback arms for failed operations or absent actions.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9ad80

Reversed auto-layouts produce CSS that places children on the wrong side for start/end alignment. Some percentage grid and .fig export cases misbehave, and SVG/PDF exports may not use embedded fonts. These issues are bounded and fixable with small edits. Resolve them before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 9ad80

Document-owned fonts introduce a new resource-lifetime concern: opening different supplied documents can leave substantial font memory retained after those documents are closed. File validation, size limits, isolated font selection, and command rollback reduce the exposure. The supported concern is application availability, not established privilege escalation or cross-document font substitution.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new parsed-font cache outlives document scopes and command rollback, while enforcing an entry-count limit rather than a byte budget. Opening or importing distinct attacker-supplied documents can accumulate retained font bytes across files, including after documents close or an import subsequently fails. Under the validated ingestion limits, 128 cached binaries of 32 MiB each permit a derived 4 GiB raw-byte footprint before parsed-face overhead. Per-file quotas and scoped selection do not contain that cross-document lifetime. Exploitation requires document ingestion; actual exhaustion was not demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported attack surface requires opening or importing an attacker-supplied document. Font parsing and retained cache memory share the application process, so resource pressure can affect other documents in that process despite isolated face selection. No service-wide or cross-tenant deployment exposure was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Distinct valid document fonts can pass per-file validation, be parsed during loading, and remain referenced by the global cache after their document scope ends. Count-only eviction permits substantial cross-file memory accumulation. This supports the availability concern, but not a verified crash or memory-corruption claim.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Archive loading and font merging verify hash-to-byte identity before the text cache trusts the map key. Direct mutation of the public embedded-font map is not revalidated by the cache, but no attacker-controlled ingestion path bypassing those checks was established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Selection is thread-local and restored by a lexical guard. Measurement establishes its own document scope, and the added nested-scope regression test checks restoration without changing global fallback selection. These controls counter cross-document selection contamination, but do not reclaim the shared parsed cache.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give the parsed-font cache a retained-byte budget alongside its entry limit, account for collection-face amplification, and provide reclamation under memory pressure. Validate the policy across successive documents, failed imports, and scope teardown.

Remove add_document_bytes.

The method calls self.add_bytes(bytes) and changes the global family's lookup order. This conflicts with the document-font contract. No repository caller uses the method, so remove it unless an external API requires it.

Generated CSS places reversed rows and columns on the opposite side from the canvas.

The layout engine does not mirror the main-axis alignment for reverse. reverse_direction_rules states this. With MainAlign::Min, the children pack at the start edge, in swapped order. With Max, they pack at the end edge.

CSS row-reverse and column-reverse swap the main-start and main-end edges. justify-content: flex-start then packs the items at the visual end. Lines 418-426 still emit flex-start for Min and flex-end for Max. For Min and Max, the CSS from inspect.code therefore puts the items on the opposite side from the canvas. center and the space-* values are symmetric and are not affected.

When l.reverse is set, swap flex-start and flex-end in justify. Alternatively, change the layout semantics to match CSS. The two must agree.

         let justify = match l.main_align {
-            MainAlign::Min => "flex-start",
+            MainAlign::Min if l.reverse => "flex-end",
+            MainAlign::Min => "flex-start",
             MainAlign::Center => "center",
-            MainAlign::Max => "flex-end",
+            MainAlign::Max if l.reverse => "flex-start",
+            MainAlign::Max => "flex-end",

Add a codegen test for a reversed row with MainAlign::Min.

Do not export percentage tracks as fixed tracks.

GridTrack::percent(0.25) uses Sizing::Fixed with value: 0.25. grid_track_size therefore exports it as a native fixed 0.25-pixel track. The stash preserves the percentage only for FigCraft round trips.

Count invalid font members against the total read budget.

left shrinks only for fonts that pass validation. Invalid members consume no budget. An archive can hold 128 fonts/<hash> members that each inflate to 32 MiB of non-SFNT data. Each member is fully decompressed, then discarded. A small file can therefore force up to 4 GiB of decompression work on open. read_images bounds its total read budget, so this path is inconsistent with it.

Subtract the bytes read before validation.

Clamp negative available grid space before percentage-track resolution.

Large gaps or many columns can make avail_w or avail_h negative. Negative padding alone does not cause this because subtracting negative padding increases the available size.

Both percentage calculations use the negative value without a clamp. track_ranges then adds the negative track size to its running position. Later tracks can move backwards when that negative size exceeds the gap.

Proposed fix
-    let avail_w = (!hug_w).then_some(f.width - pl - pr - gaps_w);
-    let avail_h = (!hug_h).then_some(f.height - pt - pb - gaps_h);
+    let avail_w = (!hug_w).then_some((f.width - pl - pr - gaps_w).max(0.0));
+    let avail_h = (!hug_h).then_some((f.height - pt - pb - gaps_h).max(0.0));

Review comment at @crates/layout/src/lib.rs at line 847:
Clamp the available width and height to zero in the `avail_w` and `avail_h`
calculations before percentage-track resolution. Preserve the existing hug
behavior, and ensure negative space from gaps or padding cannot produce negative
percentage track sizes that move later tracks backward.

Enter the document font scope in try_export_svg and export_groups.

Both functions lay out text through figcraft_text::layout_node without entering the document font scope. Text in SVG and PDF exports can therefore resolve to system faces instead of the document's embedded fonts. Export output then differs from the canvas for documents that embed fonts.

Add a document font scope using figcraft_text::enter_document_fonts(doc) at the
start of try_export_svg and export_groups, before either function lays out text,
so exports resolve fonts from the document.

Translate the new margin and Align self options.

When the UI language is Spanish, the margin fields show “Top”, “Right”, “Bottom”, and “Left”. The Align self dropdown also shows English option labels. Pass these labels through tr() before rendering them. Add catalog entries for “Baseline”, which is not present in the supplied catalogs.

Also applies to: 106-122

Thanks @Guillergood for splitting this out of #1143. It still holds three model changes that are each the owner's call, so I'm holding it for them, and I'd ask for three PRs:

  1. Layout extensions: reverse, stretch, space-around/evenly, percent tracks, signed padding, margin and align-self.
  2. ToggleOverlay.
  3. Fonts embedded in documents: this also touches our font licensing policy, so it needs the owner.

Also:

  • ChildLayout.margin: please give it a skip_serializing_if for all zeros. Right now every node in every saved file gains a margin.
  • Long words in a fixed box: the change in crates/text/src/layout.rs makes a long word overhang its box instead of breaking. That changes how existing documents render. Please split it out with the reason.
  • egui 0.37: main is on egui 0.37 now (Migrate FigCraft to egui 0.37 #1312); please merge main. It conflicts in Cargo.lock, ROADMAP.md and layout_panel.rs.

Thanks @bflatastic for the clear feedback and guidance. I have split everything out into dedicated PRs and addressed all points:

  1. Layout extensions (this PR, M2: extend auto-layout models and controls #1334):

    • This PR now focuses solely on the auto-layout model extensions: reverse flow, stretch alignment, space-around and space-evenly wrapped line spacing, percentage grid tracks, signed padding, per-item margin, and align-self.
    • ChildLayout.margin: Added #[serde(skip_serializing_if = "zero_margin")] so all-zero margins are omitted from serialized output, avoiding adding margin to nodes that don't need it.
    • egui 0.37 & main: Merged main (with egui 0.37 from Migrate FigCraft to egui 0.37 #1312) and resolved the conflicts in Cargo.lock, ROADMAP.md, and layout_panel.rs.
  2. ToggleOverlay:

  3. Fonts embedded in documents:

  4. Long words in a fixed box:

Thank you for the work on this. Thank you for splitting it as asked; the pieces were judged on their own. What remains (per-child margins, align-self, reverse flow, space-around/evenly and negative padding) adds always-visible auto layout controls the reference tool doesn't have, so it moves the default panel away from it. Closing.
