video_core: opt-in split-pipeline switches and fixes from the Ocarina of Time 30 fps work - #166
Update 06/11: rebased onto current nx2 (5f6066b, after #184); the src/common/thread.cpp conflict with #137 is resolved (coarse sleep loop layered on #137's sleep). EDEN_NUP_CACHE_MIB is opt-in again: 512 MiB default, the variable raises it. The always-on fixes that do not depend on the switches (LayeredFS on NUP, config nested-array assert, QMD 0xb0 mirror) are being split into their own small PR; the fence-wait deadlock fix stays here because it uses the FENCE_LIGHT wait-site plumbing and is the same fix as #149's first commit (whichever lands second drops its copy). New since the first version: RED/SURED register shadowing (from #149), texture unswizzle on workers (EDEN_NX2_TEX_UPLOAD_ASYNC) and graphics pipeline construction off the GPU thread (EDEN_NX2_PIPELINE_ASYNC), both opt-in.
Opt-in performance switches and four fixes found while bringing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (0400486024DEC000) to a steady 30 fps on an i5-12400F + RTX 4060 (CPU-bound: fence wait under 4 ms, back thread the limit).
Fixes (always on)
file_sys: LayeredFS mods were never applied to NUP titles (IsRomFSUpdatable path). 551e882
config: nested array index asserted against the outer array (DisabledAddOns with more than one entry filled the log with Critical asserts). d5e08b0
video_core: switching GPU accuracy Low → High while a game runs deadlocked the split back (WaitPendingFences) against the fencing thread (WaitSubmitted). Base-code bug (DeferFlush + delayed fences). Fixed by submitting the back's deferred work before blocking; WaitSubmitted's 2 s warning now names the wait the back is blocked in. b586e1e
video_core: with the split, an inline QMD launch (0x107) left the compute front's 0xb0 copy stale (SPLIT_VERIFY "front 0xc, back 0x3"). 9cd3d5c
Opt-in switches (EDEN_NX2_*=1, default off, every one unchanged when off)
Switch
What it does
DMA_READ_FAST
skip the split drain on macro DMA reads whose pages the GPU did not write (per the write bitmap)
ACQUIRE_PRECHECK
met GEQUAL acquires skip the split drain
DOWNLOAD_COALESCE
coalesce buffer downloads per flush window (54.5k → 16.1k copies/10 s in OoT)
HANDLE_PTR_CACHE
cache page pointers of per-draw handle reads
UBO_INPLACE
compare small uniform buffers in guest memory
MACRO_SINK
sink 3D macro state writes on the split back
COMPUTE_SINK
same for native compute plain writes (own switch so MACRO_SINK ships alone)
RING_PAIRS
send sunk state writes as (method, value) ring pair blocks
FENCE_LIGHT
gather CPU writes at most once per FENCE_LIGHT_US (500 µs) except on fences that need it; notify only a sleeping fencing thread; pooled fences. Follow-up 25cb7b6 gathers before any download commit so no pending CPU write is overwritten
PIPELINE_CLEAN
skip FixedPipelineState::Refresh when the registers it reads are unchanged
EDEN_TIMING_COARSE (not NX2-prefixed)
coarse OS sleep for long Event waits
EDEN_NUP_CACHE_MIB (not NX2-prefixed)
NUP decompression cache size (default raised to 6 GiB) plus a decompression timing log
Each switch logs its counters every 10 s so a regression can be attributed. EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1 passes with all of them on (3D and compute: 0 differences).
Measured
Kokiri Forest, docked, GPU accuracy Fast, same route: 17 fps on the base build → 29–30 fps with all switches plus SPLIT=2, FENCE_BATCH=1, a romfs mod that trims shadow cascades and foliage LOD, and an exefs patch that locks the game's logic at 30 fps (present interval 2 + deltaFrame 2.0; OoT's timestep is fixed at 60 Hz, so a plain 30 fps cap runs at half speed). The mods are not part of this PR.
Base
Tested on 99ac3d5 (the commit before #121). Rebasing on the current nx2 tip conflicts in src/common/thread.cpp with #137 (UMWAIT retry); happy to rebase and retest if the branch is wanted.

GPU command and engine paths record guest-memory writers. DMA reads and acquire paths use tracked writes when deciding whether to drain. Tests cover overlap, range merging, capacity, and completed work.
Fence scheduling and download coalescing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fence signaling and deferred downloads src/video_core/fence_manager.h, src/video_core/gpu.cpp
Fence handling adds opt-in gather and notification scheduling, download deferral, committing fence paths, and backend hooks. GPU submissions update the fence-light submission counter when enabled.
Vulkan fence and scheduler integration src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_fence_manager.*, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_scheduler.*, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_rasterizer.cpp, src/video_core/gpu_wait_site.h, src/video_core/CMakeLists.txt
Vulkan fences add timestamped queueing and pooled light-fence objects. The scheduler adds flush-window queries and wait-site reporting. The rasterizer idle hook commits coalesced downloads when enabled.
A generation-aware pointer cache supports handle-word and descriptor-pointer reads. Vulkan pipeline and descriptor reads use the new accessors when available. Profiling reports cache hits and misses.
Graphics environments capture state needed for worker translation. Reads unavailable from the snapshot mark the build for fallback.
Asynchronous texture uploads

Upload job and image state src/video_core/texture_cache/image_base.h, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache_base.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_texture_cache.h, src/video_core/renderer_opengl/gl_texture_cache.h
The texture cache adds pending-upload state and job records. Vulkan enables the asynchronous-upload capability; OpenGL declares it disabled.
Worker processing and upload resolution src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache.h, src/video_core/texture_cache/util.*
Eligible uploads can run on workers and resolve before dependent image operations. The utility adds unswizzling from supplied guest bytes.

Summary
Wait, configuration, and shader lowering src/common/thread.cpp, src/frontend_common/config.cpp, src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
Windows event waits gain an opt-in coarse-wait phase. Configuration array assertions use the innermost array size. Ampere operand scanning includes additional opcodes.

Keep the larger cache capacity opt-in.
Without EDEN_NUP_CACHE_MIB, this line raises each container’s cache limit from 512 MiB to 6144 MiB. A large NUP can therefore retain several GiB of decompressed members on a host without that much free memory. Keep DefaultCap when the setting is absent, and apply the larger limit only when the user requests it.

Validate the capacity before converting it to bytes.
On a 64-bit host, EDEN_NUP_CACHE_MIB=17592186044416 passes the 64 MiB check, but multiplication by 1024 * 1024 wraps cache->cap to zero. Every nonempty compressed member then takes the temporary-file path. Reject values above SIZE_MAX / (1024 * 1024) before multiplication.

Cross-review notes (I have been independently verifying the open OoT PRs; build/test result for this branch to follow below).
1. WaitPendingFences duplicates #149. The SubmitDeferredWork()-before-blocking fix in FenceManager::WaitPendingFences (the accuracy-switch deadlock) is the same fix, same location, as PR #149's first commit ("vulkan: submit deferred work before waiting on pending fences" — there it fixes the black screen when the intro hands over to gameplay). Same root cause: a fence whose signaling command is still in Scheduler::DeferFlush's deferred batch. Whichever PR merges second should drop its copy; #166's version has the extra early-return when the callback already ran and the BackWaitScope naming, #149's is the smaller diff. Happy to prepare the reconciliation.
2. EDEN_NUP_CACHE_MIB default raised to 6 GiB. That is a big always-on default for a decompression cache (low-RAM handhelds and 8 GB desktops will feel it against the 12 GiB guest layout). Consider keeping the old default and letting the switch raise it, or sizing it against total RAM.
3. LayeredFS + #159. The !updatable mod path here and #159's OpenPatchedRomFSWithProgramIndex fallback should do the same thing — I noted on #159 that with both merged the program-index path serves unmodded RomFS. Whichever lands second should pick up the parity.
4. Base is stale. Tested on 99ac3d5 (pre-#121); the src/common/thread.cpp conflict is with merged #137. The always-on fixes here (LayeredFS, config assert, the deadlock, the QMD 0xb0 staleness) are the most mergeable pieces — if it helps, those four could land first as their own PR while the switches wait for a rebase.
EDEN_NX2_DMA_READ_FAST=1 (default off): a native MME DMA read on the split
front waits only for queued work that may write the words it reads, then
reads guest memory directly. It still drains and flushes as before when a
page of the range was ever GPU-written (Nx2IsGpuWritten, the bitmap behind
every buffer-cache GPU-modified range), when a page is unmapped, or when the
range is the syncpoint shim.
The front records writes in GpuSplit::QueuedMemoryWrites by ring position:
known ranges for 3D constant buffer updates and reports and puller semaphore
releases (8 merged ranges, overflow folds into the unbounded position), and
unbounded positions for compute, DMA copy, inline-to-memory, 2D, 3D inline
uploads and waits for idle, back-run 3D macros, puller fence acquires and
WFI, host run/flush requests. A single "last memory writer" position was
the simpler route but every constant buffer update would make it a near
full drain; bounded ranges keep the common case free.
Profiler: the front fills the DMA-read page set (now mutex-guarded), so the
back's "KiB on pages MME DMA reads" stops reading 0 under the split; fast
reads are counted as "MME DMA reads without a drain"; waits show as drain
site "macro dma writers".

EDEN_NX2_ACQUIRE_PRECHECK=1 (default off): before draining the split for a
semaphore AcquireGequal (first check and the pending-acquire re-check),
read the word from guest memory; if it already holds the value and its page
was never GPU-written (so no cache can hold a newer word), continue without
the drain. Equal and Mask acquires, and every miss, take the old path
unchanged. The skipped acquire still records a host sync (NoteSync) so
later GPU-written command list reads wait for the work before it, as the
drain guaranteed. Counted as "acquires without a drain" in the profile.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
EDEN_NX2_DOWNLOAD_COALESCE=1 (default off): at low GPU accuracy with
undelayed fences, a fence made on the split's back while the scheduler is
inside its deferred-flush window (Scheduler::InFlushWindow, the same test
DeferFlush makes, EDEN_NX2_FENCE_FLUSH_US, 500 us) leaves the buffer
cache's downloads uncommitted. Those copies would not reach the GPU before
the window's submission anyway; the first fence past the window commits
everything accumulated in one batch (one staging buffer, one barrier pair,
merged ranges). Texture and query flushes keep committing per fence.
Always committed: syncpoint fences (the guest CPU waits on them), forced
waits (WaitPendingFences), and the back's idle hook, which now commits
pending downloads with a reference fence before FlushDeferred submits.
Coalescing only happens on the back thread, so a non-split GPU thread is
unaffected. DeferFlush keeps its behavior; its interval is read through a
shared helper.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
EDEN_NX2_HANDLE_PTR_CACHE=1 (default off): the texture handle words the
Vulkan graphics and compute pipelines read for every draw and dispatch,
and the texture and sampler descriptor entries DescriptorTable::Read
compares, go through a thread-local 16-slot table of host pointers of the
4 KiB device pages read last (MemoryManager::CachedPagePointer), instead of
a GPU page table walk and a device page lookup each. The value itself is
still read from guest memory every time, so guest and inline writes are
seen exactly as before.
Invalidation: a new MemoryManager::map_generation, bumped at the end of
PageTableOp and BigPageTableOp (every Map, MapSparse, Unmap), and the
device memory's existing translation_generation (Map, Unmap), now exposed
as TranslationGeneration(). The cache is keyed by the manager's unique id
(never reused like `this`). Reads crossing a page, touching the Switch 2
syncpoint shim, or of unmapped pages take the old Read<u32>/GetPointer
path. Per thread, like DeviceMemoryManager's translations: a shared cache
was emptied by a service thread mid-use before.
Off: one branch on a static const bool, otherwise the old calls. The
generation bump runs either way and is unobservable. Profile counters
PtrCacheHits/PtrCacheMisses ("handle page pointers ... cached, ...
looked up").

EDEN_NX2_UBO_INPLACE=1 (default off): BindSmallUniformReusing used to copy
each small uniform buffer (up to 4 KiB) into a scratch buffer on every
bind, compare the copy with the slot's bytes, then copy it again into the
stream buffer and the slot. When the buffer's device pages are one host
run (DeviceMemoryManager::GetSpan; always true inside one 4 KiB page), it
now compares the slot's bytes with guest memory directly:
- unchanged, same command buffer: rebind the slot's allocation, no copy;
- unchanged, new command buffer: stream copy from the slot's bytes;
- changed: one copy into the slot, the stream copy made from the slot.
The stream allocation therefore always equals the slot's bytes, the
invariant the scratch snapshot gave before, even if the guest writes
meanwhile. Other buffers take the scratch path unchanged.
Not done: the brief's write-sequence skip (EDEN_NX2_UBO_SEQ). Fast-path
uniform pages stay CPU-modified, hence unprotected, since that path never
uploads them (inline cb_data reaches WriteMemory too), so guest CPU writes
to them never trap and no counter could see them; skipping the compare
would bind stale constants.
Profile counters UboInPlaceSame/UboInPlaceChanged ("uniform buffers
compared in place ... unchanged, ... changed").

EDEN_NX2_MACRO_SINK=1 (default off). The front's 3D macro writes to
registers outside execution_mask go to the back's method sink like the
command list's own state writes, instead of a Direct CallMethod each
(profiler scope, ConsumeSink, RecordWrite, shadow RAM, dirty flags).
The back applies the sink in order before the next executable or Direct
write and in FinishFrontMacro, so ordering against executable methods
and deferred draws is unchanged.
Native compute: writes to native_plain_methods registers are dropped on
the front when the front's register copy already holds the value and
the front sent that register before (so the back's native_registers and
regs both hold it); the rest go as tagged sink entries (SinkMethod,
EngineInterface::SplitPlainTag) that ConsumeSinkImpl stores as the
native plain CallMethod path does.
EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY: the 3D shadow check counts tracked writes still
in the sink; a compute check compares the front's registers with the
back's every 4096 macro calls (only with the switch on).
Counter: LOG_INFO every 10 s, split_batch.macro_sunk/compute_sunk/
compute_same per second.

AppLoader_NUP reports the RomFS as not updatable (update already merged),
so RomFSFactory returned the raw file and user/load/<title>/<mod>/romfs
layers were never applied. Run PatchRomFS without an NCA: the update step
is skipped and LayeredFS still runs. No mods present = same file as before.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
EDEN_NX2_RING_PAIRS=1 (default off). State writes the split's front
would put in the back's method sink (3D command-list writes outside
execution_mask; with EDEN_NX2_MACRO_SINK also the 3D macro ones and the
native compute plain ones) go as (method, value) words in a new ring
entry, Pairs. The back runs one profiler scope, ConsumeSink and one
virtual ApplyPairs per block instead of a dispatch and sink push per
write. Maxwell3D applies a block as ConsumeSinkImpl applies the sink
(shadow RAM Track/Replay, same-value skip, dirty tables, deferred-draw
check); compute stores native_registers and regs like CallMethod's
native plain path.
A block stays open on the front only until anything else is reserved
or the ring is published, so published entries never change, a block
never crosses the ring's end, and every Call, executable method, Multi
or engine switch follows the pairs before it. Pairs are applied when
the back reaches them, never later than the sink would apply them, so
Defer'd code and FinishFrontMacro see them first. SPLIT_VERIFY needs no
change: a drain applies every block. Counter: split_batch.pairs and
split_batch.pair_blocks in the 10 s log line.

Each fence gathered the guest's CPU writes (a lock per CPU core plus
their invalidations), notified the fencing thread even while it was busy,
read the clock twice and heap-allocated its fence. With the switch:
- the gather runs at most once per EDEN_NX2_FENCE_LIGHT_US (default 500 us),
and always on fences with downloads, syncpoint and forced-wait fences,
accurate fence modes, and the first fence after a guest command list
submission (counted in GPU::PushGPUEntries);
- cv.notify_all only while the fencing thread sleeps on the condition
variable (flag set under the guard);
- one steady_clock read per fence feeds InFlushWindow and DeferFlush;
- stubbed fences share one object, the rest reuse a free list.
Invariant: the gather only applies CPU writes into GPU-written buffer
pages (GPU::OnCPUWrite defers nothing else). Writes made before a guest
submission are applied before any command recorded after the first fence
that follows it, as before. Residual: a write ordered only by a GPU
semaphore acquire waits for the first fence past the interval.
Counters every 10 s: "EDEN_NX2_FENCE_LIGHT per second" (gathers, skipped,
notifies, skipped, shared stubs, pooled fences). Off: unchanged.

CurrentGraphicsPipeline ran FixedPipelineState::Refresh and a key compare
on every lookup (37.7k draws/s in OoT, ~40 ms/s, more than one lookup per
draw). With EDEN_NX2_PIPELINE_CLEAN=1 the lookup returns current_pipeline
without Refresh when, since the last Refresh:
- the registers Refresh reads are equal (value compare of a watch list
built once from dynamic_features: every register of Refresh,
DynamicState::Refresh/2/3, BlendingAttachment::Refresh,
ComputeAttachment0DualSourceBlend, the vertex repack, and the xfb
layout while transform feedback is on);
- unique_hashes (RefreshStages still runs) are equal;
- the dirty flags Refresh reads (VertexInput, ViewportSwizzles, Blending
without EDS3 blend) are clear, so skipping it clears nothing;
- same Maxwell3D (channel), draw topology and engine hint;
- current_pipeline is the pipeline whose key graphics_key was.
Value compare instead of a dirty-table entry: the two tables are full for
many of these registers, other consumers clear the existing flags, and
NVN rewrites unchanged state each draw. Counters every 10 s:
"EDEN_NX2_PIPELINE_CLEAN per second". Off: unchanged.

SetArrayIndex compared the index with the outermost array's size, so a

the assert on every entry past the outer size. Reading still worked; only
the log filled with Critical asserts.

The native compute part of the macro sink (same-value drop on the
front, tagged sink entries or pairs, the compute SPLIT_VERIFY check)
now has its own switch, EDEN_NX2_COMPUTE_SINK=1 (default off), so
EDEN_NX2_MACRO_SINK=1 covers only the 3D macro writes and can ship
alone. RING_PAIRS carries compute writes only with COMPUTE_SINK; the
10 s batched-writes log runs with any of the three switches.

destination is mapped makes the back call ProcessNativeMethod(0xb0, 3),
which stores 3 in native_registers[0xb0]. The front's register copy
kept the last 0xb0 the front itself sent, so EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY
reported "compute register 0xb0: front 0xc, back 0x3" whenever an
inline launch came after the last QMD launch from a macro. 0xb0 is not
a plain register, so the same-value drop never touched it.
FrontApply now applies the same rule (mapped destination and the
control/0xcc test) to its copy, under EDEN_NX2_COMPUTE_SINK only, so
the switch-off path is unchanged.

Switching GPU accuracy from Low to High while a game runs hung the GPU
threads (OoT, 24 s of "Waited N s for the GPU thread to submit tick").
With High, fences are delayed: their callback runs on the fencing thread
after the fence's work completes. On the split's back, a fence queued in
the flush window only marks its submission pending (DeferFlush); the
back then blocked in WaitPendingFences on a callback, the fencing thread
waited in WaitSubmitted for the back to submit, and the back serves that
only between entries: deadlock. Pre-existing (DeferFlush and the delayed
path are base code), not caused by the opt-in switches.
- delayed fences submit the back's deferred work at once;
- WaitPendingFences submits it before blocking (only when the callback
did not already run, so undelayed fences are unchanged);
- the accuracy is read once per fence;
- watchdog: WaitSubmitted's 2 s warning names the wait the back thread
is blocked in (BackWaitScope: fence callback wait, host GPU wait) and
the last submitted tick.

With EDEN_NX2_FENCE_LIGHT a fence may skip the dirty-memory gather. A
later fence that commits a download then copied GPU data over guest
memory the CPU wrote after that, with the write still pending (the cache
did not know of it): the CPU's data was lost, which can leave a guest
waiting on a value forever. When a gather was skipped since the last
one, the fence now checks for downloads to commit (texture and buffer
cache, under their locks) and gathers before committing, as the previous
fence's gather did without the switch. Counted as "before downloads" in
the 10 s line. Also lists gpu_wait_site.h in video_core's sources.

EDEN_NX2_TEX_UPLOAD_ASYNC=1 (default off, Vulkan only): while a draw's
or a dispatch's FillImageViews runs, RefreshContents queues the CPU part
of each eligible upload (guest bytes, unswizzle, convert or plain copy
into the staging buffer) on a pool of EDEN_NX2_TEX_UPLOAD_THREADS
workers (default 2, 1-16). When FillImageViews returns, the GPU thread
takes every job still queued and runs it itself, waits for the running
ones, records the copies (UploadMemory or AccelerateImageUpload) in
queue order and one upload barrier. Uploads under
EDEN_NX2_TEX_UPLOAD_MIN_KIB (default 64) stay synchronous. Off, no
worker exists, no batch opens and every path is the old one.
Eligible: the plain path only. Not Sparse/SparseLayers/SparseTiles/
UnwrittenSparse/Unbacked, not MSAA, not AsynchronousDecode or
IsDecoding, not the GPU unswizzle path, not dirty layers, nothing of
64 MiB or more (UploadInChunks and by-layer uploads keep their paths),
not GpuModified, not AcceleratedUpload with trimmed levels; an
AcceleratedUpload image is eligible when its guest bytes are host
contiguous (the worker only copies them).
Where the GPU thread waits. The batch closes when FillImageViews
returns: every sampled and storage image of the draw or dispatch has
been refreshed there, and nothing has been recorded that reads one
(descriptors are pushed and the draw recorded afterwards; render targets
refresh later, synchronously, in UpdateRenderTargets, so the IsFullClear
decision of zortos293#141 is untouched). Inside the batch a queued image is
flagged UploadPending, and every cache operation that would record
against it before then resolves the batch first, in queue order:
RefreshContents of that image again, CopyImage with it as source or
destination (SynchronizeAliases, JoinImages' alias copies), JoinImages'
copies from GPU-modified overlaps into the new image, ScaleUp/ScaleDown
with resolution scaling on (the scale blit reads it), MarkModification
(so a queued image is never GpuModified and no download, eviction
download or overlap copy reads it). DeleteImage drops its job (the
staging buffer is freed at resolve, after the job finished). TickFrame
resolves too, though nothing is left by then.
Coverage: the member call graph reachable from FillImageViews (walked
over texture_cache.h) reaches these recorders only: CopyImage,
JoinImages (runtime CopyImage/CopyImageMSAA, TransitionImageLayout of
the new, unqueued image), ScaleUp/ScaleDown (also from
RenderTargetFromImage), RefreshContents and its upload paths (each
touches only the image refreshed), PrepareImage's sparse binds (only for
modifications; FillImageViews passes none), MarkModification,
DeleteImage, and RemoveFramebuffers' FlushDeferredClear (a deferred
clear the next upload's EndRenderPass would realize first anyway).
Downloads, the collector, blits, DMA copies, RescaleRenderTargets,
TickAsyncDecode/Unswizzle and Unmap* are not reachable from it, and no
other thread runs them meanwhile: the rasterizer holds the texture
cache mutex across Configure.
What a worker touches. Only the job: its inputs (ImageInfo, native
tiling flag, guest bytes, sizes) and the mapped staging memory. The
memory manager is not documented safe for reads off the GPU thread
(page tables change under unmaps; zortos293#146's MaxContinuousRange cache and
our map_generation are GPU-thread state), so the GPU thread resolves
the guest range as GpuGuestMemory does: GetSpan gives a host pointer
into the physical DRAM backing (valid for the emulator's life; Windows
never decommits it, a cleared region reads zero), otherwise
ReadBlockUnsafe copies the bytes into the job right away; accelerated
uploads FlushRegion(NoTextureCache) first, as their ReadBlock did. The
staging buffer is requested on the GPU thread as a deferred one, so no
other request reuses it if the scheduler submits before the copy is
recorded; it is freed right after recording. UnswizzleImage gains
UnswizzleImageData, the same code reading only its input (a linear
image copies it), so the worker calls no cache, scheduler, rasterizer
or memory manager. ConvertImage already ran on the decode worker.
Guest writes: RefreshContents still clears CpuModified and tracks the
image before the guest bytes are read (now possibly later, on a
worker), so a CPU write during or after that read marks the image
modified again and it is refreshed again, as with today's GPU-thread
read; no write can be lost.
Counters (logged every 10 s from TickFrame under the switch): images
async, MiB, how many read on the GPU thread first, batches, queue
high-water, early resolves; sync images by reason (outside
FillImageViews, small, large, sparse/MSAA, GPU modified/decoding,
non-contiguous accelerated); failed and dropped jobs; worker busy ms;
jobs the GPU thread ran itself and their ms; ms it waited on running
jobs. Uploads keep counting in the Nx2 profiler's TextureUpload zone,
the resolve included.
Shutdown and failures: the pool is declared after the job lists, so
TextureCache's destruction stops and joins its threads before them;
jobs are shared with their queued tasks, and no batch outlives
FillImageViews. A job that throws is marked failed and the GPU thread
uploads that image synchronously, reading guest memory again.
EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY compares register shadows and is unaffected.
OpenGL never enables it (ASYNC_TEXTURE_UPLOADS trait): its upload maps
are not deferred.

The register shadowing check reads bits 32-39 only for register-form
opcodes and a short exception list. zortos293#100 added ISBEWR (0x927) for
Ocarina's door NaN. RED (0x98e) and SURED (0x59f) take their data
register from bits 32-39 as well, and RegisterPressure already lists
operand 32 for both, but they were never asked: a data register at or
above the uniform bank read Lichii's UR mirror instead of the guest
value. Add them alongside ISBEWR.

(cherry picked from commit ae7037b)
EDEN_NX2_PIPELINE_ASYNC=1 (default off, Vulkan, effective only with
use_asynchronous_shaders on): a graphics pipeline missing from the cache
is translated (TranslateProgram, EmitSPIRV) and built, driver compile
included, on the pipeline cache's workers instead of the GPU thread,
where one took 100-3,500 ms. Its cache entry stays null while the job is
pending and its draws are skipped where CanDiscardPendingDraw allows; a
draw that may not be skipped runs the queued job on the GPU thread, or
waits for the worker that has it. A miss whose first draw may not be
skipped is built synchronously as before, so it pays no snapshot cost.
EDEN_NX2_PIPELINE_ASYNC=2 also lets native (Switch 2) draws follow the
legacy skip rule: CanDiscardPendingDraw never skips them, so with 1 a
native title still builds every pipeline on the GPU thread.
Snapshot rule: workers never read Maxwell3D or the memory manager. When
the job is queued, GraphicsEnvironment::SnapshotForAsync copies on the
GPU thread what translation reads besides the program code (already in
the environment's code cache from SetCachedSize): every enabled constant
buffer of the used stages (up to 64 KiB each, read as Read<u32> reads,
syncpoint shim included) with IsCbufStorageBufferPointer's answer for
each 8-byte slot, the texture header pool (limit + 1 entries, at most
4 MiB), sampler binding, native tiling, viewport transform state and the
HLE replace table.
Fallback: a read the copy cannot answer (code outside the cached range,
a disabled buffer, a handle past the copied pool, an indirect storage
pointer, any exception) marks the environment; the result is discarded
and the pipeline is built on the GPU thread at its next draw with that
draw's state (logged once per pipeline hash). Finished jobs are drained
into graphics_cache at the top of every lookup and serialized to the disk
cache as runtime pipelines are. Every 10 s a line reports queued, worker
built, inline, waited, synchronous, fallback, skipped draws, snapshot
KiB per job and GPU-thread ms. Compute pipelines and OpenGL unchanged;
with the switch off only never-taken branches are added.

Without EDEN_NUP_CACHE_MIB the cache stays at the 512 MiB default; the
variable raises it (6144 on a 40 GB host). Reject values that would
overflow size_t when converted to bytes. Review of zortos293#166.

Publish the job before marking it Done.
If a discardable draw queues a job and a later draw with the same key is non-discardable, the GPU thread can wake before the worker queues the result. The drain then leaves the null placeholder in graphics_cache, and the rasterizer skips the draw. A fallback build is also delayed until a later draw.

The standalone fixes are now #203 (two of them: LayeredFS on NUP and the config nested-array assert; the QMD 0xb0 mirror turned out to act only under EDEN_NX2_COMPUTE_SINK, so it stays here).
A question about the exefs patch you mention under Measured, the one that locks the game's logic at 30 fps (present interval 2 and deltaFrame 2.0).
I measured the problem it solves on a slower machine (Ryzen 7 5700G, RTX 4070, Low, current nx2). In Kokiri Forest, at the same wall-clock time, Link gets visibly further in a 10 s walk that presents 188 frames than in one that presents 142. So below 60 fps the game runs in slow motion. On 8-core CPUs, where the split's back limits nx2 to about 25–30 fps, that patch probably matters more for playability than any further emulator speedup.
Would you consider adding it to PatchManager's built-in table from #124 (title 0400486024DEC000, build id E0F3CCFA…3348), off by default and listed under Add-Ons, as its own PR? Or share the offsets and the expected and replacement words so someone can? I'm happy to test it on this machine. I'd rather not reverse-engineer the same spots again.
AI disclosure: written with Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code).
I'm working on this as a built-in patch (off by default, under Add-Ons) for build id E0F3CCFA…3348. The game has its own frame-rate controller, and forcing its target to 30 is one word at main+0x4dc110 (0x2A0203F5 → 0x528003D5). That gives present interval 2 instead of the 60 Hz VRR path. I'm checking now whether the game's logic follows the rate on its own, or whether it also needs the deltaFrame change DrSergioRFilho mentioned. I'll open a PR, and I'd be glad of a test on your 5700G.
I used Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to find this and draft this comment.
Update: the one-word controller patch isn't enough. With it applied, the game still presents at interval 1 (word 0x1003c), so that setter doesn't seem to run in normal play. More importantly, logic advances one 60 Hz step per presented frame: the Kokiri Forest name banner takes ~7 s at ~24 fps with or without the patch. So 30 fps needs both a present interval of 2 and the deltaFrame change. DrSergioRFilho, if you can share the deltaFrame location, that would save a lot of tracing; otherwise I'll keep looking.
I used Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to test this and draft this comment.

The clean lookup (af8731f, upstream zortos293#166 PIPELINE_CLEAN) keeps the pipeline without
FixedPipelineState::Refresh while the registers on its watch list are unchanged. That list is
kept by hand next to Refresh, and nothing showed whether the skip fires.
- With EDEN_NX2_PERF_VERIFY=1, each clean hit runs Refresh into a copy of the key (as the miss
path would: attribute types restored, mesh vertex input cleared). On a difference it warns
once, counts it and takes the ordinary path, so the draw uses the refreshed key. Refresh has
no other effect there: the dirty groups it would clear are clear on a hit.
- Profile counters PipelineCleanHits/Misses/VerifyDiffs, reported as "pipeline lookups clean
N/s, refreshed N/s (N verify diffs)" with EDEN_NX2_GPU_PROFILE (the upstream periodic
hit/miss log was dropped in the port).
- The watch list construction and the snapshot copy/compare move to pipeline_clean_watch.{h,cpp}
unchanged, so a test can check them against Refresh without a Vulkan device.

Port of the EDEN_NX2_PIPELINE_CLEAN commit of upstream PR #166
(zortos293/Lichii, open), author DrSergioRFilho (Dr. Sergio), as default
behaviour without the switch.
CurrentGraphicsPipeline ran FixedPipelineState::Refresh and a key compare
on every lookup. It now returns current_pipeline without Refresh when,
since the last Refresh, the registers Refresh reads are equal (a value
compare against a watch list built once from dynamic_features, plus the
xfb layout while transform feedback is on), unique_hashes are equal
(RefreshStages still runs), the dirty flags Refresh reads (VertexInput,
ViewportSwizzles, Blending without EDS3 blend) are clear, the Maxwell3D,
draw topology and engine hint are the same, and current_pipeline is the
pipeline whose key graphics_key was.
Port notes:
- The PR's separate CurrentGraphicsPipelineClean is folded into our
CurrentGraphicsPipeline, which keeps our Refresh path (the
vertex_attribute_types restore/save and ClearMeshVertexInput for mesh
stages) after TakeCleanSnapshot. A skip leaves graphics_key as that
path left it.
- The switch and the per-10 s hit/miss counters are dropped; the one-time
log of the watch size stays.
- The watch list was checked against our FixedPipelineState::Refresh,
which differs from the PR base only by the VertexAttributeTypes
refactor (vertex_attrib_format and the stream strides it reads are
watched).
