fix(bed-fit): keep object size and placed bounds apart (#91) - #104
Conversation
Size-only bed-fit statements read the overall mesh extents, so a small
object moved off the plate still "fit", and separated objects or plates
could add up to a combined extent that produced scale-or-split advice
that was not about any single object.
- geometry.object_sizes / measure: per-object size in mm (units-correct,
before the build item moves, turns or scales it) from the same read as
the placed per-item bounds.
- plate_placement.placed_instances: per-instance placed bounds and plate;
no combined extent across plates.
- intelligence.project_info: object_sizes_mm and placed, with
dimensions_mm kept and labelled as overall extents by size.
- bed_fit: every size statement says "By size" and each object is judged
on its own; placement is added separately ("By placement") and an
off-plate instance makes the result a risk.
- validation_report: "Fits the print bed" is per object, by size.
- Desktop: Design Health bed-fit row is "by size" per object.
Verified: backend pytest 3194 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest
(823 passed, incl. prepare-copy guard) and build clean.

…ce (#91 repair) Merges the #93 repair (part-keyed items, unjudged instances, stricter move verifier) and then: - No fallback to the combined extents: with no per-object sizes the bed-fit, validation report and Design Health say "By size, Studio could not measure each object, so it cannot say whether they fit". Build items whose object is missing are counted (objects_unmeasured) and keep the result from reading as "everything fits". - bed_fit.assess_objects checks every object (no 64 cap). - Prime-tower and "share the plate" findings no longer turn a size into a placement claim; wording follows the review (By size, Snapmaker Orca). - geometry collects each distinct object once (keyed by part and object id) and moves those points per item; sizes and items count against the vertex limit separately; results and footprints are remembered per unchanged file. project_info only does this when placement_aware. - Design Health row: "Size only: where it sits on the plate is a separate check." - CHANGELOG and scene-contract README updated. Verified: backend pytest 3221 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…91 repair 2) Merges the #93 repair (bounded footprint read, per-(part, object) instance numbers) and then: - The bed-fit placement check uses the prepare target's printable polygon and margin, never a connected printer's axis-travel extents (about 271 x 335 on a U1) anchored at 0,0. - assess_objects reports every object that fails, each fix naming its object, and objects_by_size carries each object's findings and fixes. - Remembered measurements are keyed by a content fingerprint as well as size and mtime, and are only stored if the file is unchanged after the measurement; a same-size, same-timestamp replacement is not served stale. - placed_instances numbers uses of the same (part, object). Verified: backend pytest 3228 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…repair 3) Merges the #93 repair (printable area not travel, unjudged/tall never OK, safe move writer) and then: - service.bed_fit identifies a connected printer from what it reports: the U1 (or another profiled printer) is checked against its recorded printable volume and polygon; one that cannot be identified keeps a size check against what it reported and gets no placement verdict. - The measurement caches take a lock around every read and write. - Tests: unidentified printer, unjudged instances in a two-plate project stay a warning, caches under eight threads. Verified: backend pytest 3243 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…91 repair 4) Merges the #93 repair (content-keyed Ready Now cache, height from the printing parts) and then: - A connected printer Studio cannot identify reports axis travel, not a printable size: the bed-fit result is unavailable (size and placement both unknown), so 10 x 300 x 10 is no longer reported as fitting. - An identified printer is checked against its profile's recorded volume and labelled as the profile's, not as a live measurement. - The bed-fit placement findings check the placed Z (build-item scale included) with the same over_height rule preflight uses. - The geometry caches use fileid, the one content key. - The big-printer test derives its placement through the service. Verified: backend pytest 3248 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…repair 5) Merges the #93 repair (below-plate parts, torn Ready Now reads, named printer) and then: - An object's size is the size of the parts that print, like its placed footprint: a 300 mm modifier next to a 10 mm cube no longer makes the object too large or too tall by size. - The bed-fit placement findings flag instances that reach below the build plane (a point to check, not a fit). - Stale docstrings and comments describe the printable-area behaviour; the big-printer test also drives service.bed_fit through printer identification. Verified: backend pytest 3255 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Merges the #93 repair (roles propagate down through assemblies) and makes an object's size use the same rule through geometry: a non- printing role on an assembly applies to every descendant, roles on nested objects are consulted at every level, missing means a normal part, conflicting or unrecognised roles count. Tests go through service.bed_fit, the validation report and the per-object sizes for each of the four helper roles on a nested assembly (role on the assembly and on the nested record), a missing role, conflicting records and a child beneath a modifier. The big-printer test also asserts the preflight source names the printer from the derived placement. Verified: backend pytest 3281 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nsumers (#91 repair 7) Merges the #93 repair (role-aware overall extents, precise_seam_* helper roles) and keeps the per-object size and placed-bounds code on the same shared rule. One fixture now drives the Bed-Fit API, the validation report and per-object sizes alongside preflight, Ready Now, the overall extents and the scene. Verified: backend pytest 3313 passed / 49 skipped; desktop tsc, vitest (826 passed) and build clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The
Units fixheading scopes the unit-scaling change, but the paragraph also describes current consumer behavior and defers the “By size” wording to PR 3c. TheKnown limitationssection now records PR#104as addressing this behavior. Update the paragraph to describe only the units-fix scope.📝 Suggested fix
-What this does **not** do (decision, plan v4 item 1): the size-based consumers still answer "does the model's -size fit the bed". They are not placement-aware. A small object translated off the plate, or separated instances -whose union is large, is still judged by size only. The scene's placement findings are the placement-aware -source. No consumer copy was edited here; qualifying those claims "by size" is PR 3c. +What this does **not** do: the units fix changes only the unit scaling of each dimension source. It does not +separate size from placement. That separation is described under "Known limitations" (issue #91, PR #104): +size-based consumers judge each object's size ("By size") and report placement separately.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Do not treat missing capabilities as an unreachable printer.
If diagnostics or history reaches a printer but the capabilities read fails, _printer_snapshot can have reachable=True and caps=None. This branch then falls back to the U1 profile and can report that objects fit a printer whose printable area is unknown. Use the snapshot’s reachability evidence to return an unavailable fit result when the reachable printer cannot be identified.

…unavailable bed fit is not verified Placement findings from bed_fit had no condition id, so the Intelligence Report treated them as unmapped and the legacy keyword fallback attached the out-of-bounds community fix and a generic next action. Check the arrangement before recommending scaling.
_plate_fit compares each plate's combined cluster bounds with the printable area. Separate instances can therefore make fits false even when each instance fits individually. This reaches the oversized_plates message and can give incorrect scaling advice.

Size-only bed-fit statements used the overall mesh extents. A small object moved off the plate still "fit", and separated objects or plates could add up to a combined extent that produced "scale or split" advice about no single object.

When no per-object size can be measured the answer is unknown ("By size, Studio could not measure each object, so it cannot say whether they fit"); it never falls back to the combined extents. Every object is checked (no cap); build items whose object is missing are counted and keep the result from saying everything fits.

service.bed_fitidentifies a connected printer: the U1 (or another profiled printer) is checked against its recorded printable volume, an unidentifiable one keeps a size check and gets no placement verdict. Measurement caches are locked. Includes the fix(placement): judge every build item, not every object id (#93) #102 round-3 changes. project_infoonly does this whenplacement_aware=True(insights, bed fit and the validation report).Timings on a 37 MB synthetic 3MF (2 objects, about 290k vertices each; one process per call, cold)
project_infoinsightsbed_fitreportpredict_successThe extra cost is the new capability (reading each mesh per object and per instance); it is paid only on the placement-aware paths and once per unchanged file. Callers that did not need it keep their old cost.

layout.assess_layoutkeeps its existing placed-bounds logic. A per-object size ignores scale in the build item (a scaled instance shows up as a placement finding). No real Orca-authored multi-instance or multi-plate project was used. Cold cost on the placement-aware paths is still about 3 s for a 37 MB file. The size check still takes a connected printer's reported bed (axis travel) as its bed size, as before; andpreflight(not changed here) still builds its own rectangle from it.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
