Summary

I built Eglantine with ASan + UBSan and, separately, with TSan, then ran the unit tests,
the dynarmic tests and Mario Kart World 1.8.0 under both. This PR fixes the real bugs
that came out of it. Each fix is its own commit.

  • dynarmic: the AVX-512 path of the 16-bit vector CLZ (CLZ Vd.8H) only packed the
low half back, so lanes 4 to 7 came out as 0xfff0. This hits Zen 4 and other
AVX-512 CD CPUs. The existing A64: CLZ test failed on them and passes now.
  • video_core: on shutdown, GPU::Impl freed the channels before the renderer, and the
Vulkan rasterizer destructor then wrote into the freed Maxwell3D dirty flags. The
    renderer is now destroyed first.
  • video_core: the buffer usage tracker shifted by 64 for ranges under 64 bytes, and it
left a partly used 64-byte unit at the end of a range unmarked. That could let
CanReorderUpload move an upload before a draw that reads it. The mask now covers
    exactly the touched units.
  • audio_core: SystemManager::Add appended to the system list outside the lock the
    render thread iterates it under.
  • input_common: InitJoystick and CloseJoysticks took joystick_map_mutex and then
SDL's joystick lock, the reverse of the event watcher. SDL's lock is now taken first.
  • core, common: data races on pause_end_time, perf_stats, the file log backend
counters, and the exit-lock, exit-request and NVDEC flags, which were bit-fields in
one byte written from different threads.
  • hid_core: the button handler used the shared memory of unassigned applet slots,
    which is null.
  • core: VectorVfsFile::Read read out of bounds for an offset past the end.
  • Smaller UB: misaligned Opus header read, memcpy from null with size 0 in
ScratchBuffer, and the zbic zstd include, which broke ASan links.
  • tests: new cases for the usage tracker masks and VectorVfsFile::Read.

Before: A64: CLZ failed with 0xfff0fff0fff0fff0 instead of 0x000c000d000e000f,
and TSan reported a SEGV in StateTracker::InvalidateCommandBufferState during
shutdown.

vpackusdw on the xmm form only packed the low four lzcnt results, so
lanes 4 to 7 of CLZ Vd.8H came out as 0xfff0. Extract the upper half
and pack it as the second source. Fixes the A64: CLZ test.

GPU::Impl declares channels after renderer, so the channel states were
freed first. The Vulkan rasterizer destructor then finished the
scheduler, which wrote invalidation flags into the freed Maxwell3D dirty
state of the bound channel.

The page mask came from size >> 6, so a range under 64 bytes shifted by
64 (undefined; all ones on x86) and a range with a partly used unit at
its end left that unit unmarked, letting CanReorderUpload move an upload
before a draw that reads it. Build the mask from the first and last
touched unit, and stop IsUsed after the first page when the range ends
in it, as Track does.

pause_end_time is written by the pausing thread and read by the timing
thread; make it atomic. Frontend timers poll GetAndResetPerfStats while
Load and shutdown emplace and reset perf_stats; guard it with a mutex.
FileBackend is written from every logging thread; make its byte count
and enabled flag atomic.

SDL runs the event watcher with its joystick lock held, and the watcher
takes joystick_map_mutex. InitJoystick and CloseJoysticks took
joystick_map_mutex first and then called into SDL, which could deadlock
against a joystick event at startup or shutdown.

UpdateAllButtonLifo and UpdateCoreBatteryState used the shared memory of
every aruid slot, which is null for unassigned ones. Check it like the
six-axis handler does.

…read

Read the Opus packet header with memcpy, since guest input has no
alignment guarantee. VectorVfsFile::Read underflowed the remaining size
for an offset past the end and copied out of bounds; return 0 instead.
Skip the ScratchBuffer copy when there is no old buffer. Declare the
ASan poisoning functions through the sanitizer header before zbic
includes zstd.c, so ASan builds link.

They were 1-bit bit-fields in one byte. LockExit on a service thread and
SetNVDECActive rewrote the same byte that the VI conductor reads, so a
concurrent update could be lost.

Check that the usage tracker marks partly used 64-byte units, does not
mark a whole page for small ranges or a range ending on a page boundary,
and handles ranges across pages. Check that VectorVfsFile::Read returns
0 for an offset at or past the end.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The pull request updates synchronization, resource lifecycles, and boundary handling across audio, core, input, logging, and video code. It also changes vector instruction emission and sanitizer inclusion, and adds tests for vector-file reads and video usage tracking.

Changes: Core synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Performance statistics and core state
src/core/core.cpp
Performance-statistics initialization, reset, and retrieval now use a mutex. Three state fields now use atomic booleans.
Pause-end timestamp
src/core/core_timing.h, src/core/core_timing.cpp
Pause-end timestamps use atomic stores and loads. The event-rescheduling comparison remains unchanged.

Resource and input lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
System registration lock scope
src/audio_core/renderer/system_manager.cpp
The lock remains held through insertion of a system.
SDL joystick lock ordering
src/input_common/drivers/sdl_driver.cpp
Joystick initialization and closure acquire the SDL joystick lock before the map mutex and release the lock on scope exit.
Renderer teardown
src/video_core/gpu.cpp
The GPU implementation explicitly resets the renderer during destruction.

File and buffer access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Buffer and page-range handling
src/common/scratch_buffer.h, src/video_core/buffer_cache/usage_tracker.h, src/tests/video_core/usage_tracker.cpp, src/tests/CMakeLists.txt
Scratch-buffer resizing skips copying when capacity is zero. Usage tracking applies masks to all 64-byte units touched by a range. Tests cover partial units and page boundaries.
Vector-file read boundaries
src/core/file_sys/vfs/vfs_vector.cpp, src/tests/core/vfs_vector.cpp, src/tests/CMakeLists.txt
Reads at or beyond the data size return zero. Tests cover end offsets and empty files.

Opus packet decoding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Aligned packet-header copies
src/audio_core/opus/decoder.cpp
Both decode paths copy packet headers into local objects before reversing their fields.

File logging counters

Layer / File(s) Summary
Atomic write accounting
src/common/logging.cpp
The byte count and enabled flag are atomic. Each write adds its byte count atomically, and the write-limit check uses the resulting total.

AddressSanitizer interface inclusion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conditional sanitizer header
src/common/zbic_compression.cpp
The source conditionally includes the ASan interface header when AddressSanitizer is enabled.

Vector leading-zero emission

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pack widened result halves
src/dynarmic/src/dynarmic/backend/x64/emit_x64_vector.cpp
The emitter extracts the upper 128-bit result before packing it with the lower half.

Abstracted pad state updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate ARUID entries
src/hid_core/resources/abstracted_pad/abstract_button_handler.cpp
Button LIFO and battery-state updates skip ARUID entries that are null or unassigned.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced buffer-data path takes emulated-device memory ranges into staging copies and uses per-buffer usage state to select copy ordering. The demonstrated scope is in-process rendering state and GPU work ordering; this path does not establish a new credential, tenant or service authority transition.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The public-entrypoint labels describe existing C++ declarations rather than evidence of newly exposed remote or privileged operations. Source comparison shows an existing public field's type change and existing tracker methods' behavior changes, without adding entrypoints to these declarations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — CoreTiming retains acknowledgement-based synchronous pause handling and centralized timer-thread cleanup. Reset requests stop, wakes waiting paths and joins the thread; destruction invokes Reset. The timestamp change adds no separately owned resource or recovery obligation.

Comment thread src/core/core_timing.cpp Resolved
Pause(false) cleared paused and woke the timer thread before storing
pause_end_time, so Advance could reschedule overdue looping events from
the previous boundary. Store it first; the timer's load of paused orders
it. Drop the second store in SyncPause. Reported by CodeRabbit.
