video_core, shader: fix Ocarina of Time's black 3D scene in gameplay - #614
I have read and followed the Coding Guidelines to the best of my ability.
I have put [HUMANMADE] in the title if the pr was human-mande
Summary
In gameplay the 3D world is black and only the HUD (hearts, button prompts) draws.
The game renders the scene at a lower resolution and upscales it with a tensor-core network. Without EDEN_NX2_TENSOR, a plain upscale (the stand-in) is used instead. In gameplay this failed for two reasons:
The network's final pass was rejected for a texture-gather form (F16 with per-pixel offsets), not for matrix multiply. The stand-in only runs on matrix-multiply rejections, so nothing wrote the final image.
The stand-in guessed the wrong images. It took the first image pair in cbuf0+0x80..0x11c, which in gameplay was a 4x4 and a 120x67 image blitted over the frame.
Upscale stand-in: takes its input and output images from the program's own TEX/TLD/TLD4 and SUST.P handles, checks aspect ratio and scale, and accepts an E5B9G9R9 input.
Shader lowerings for the rest of Ocarina's native programs:
ISETP.EX accumulation and F32 global reductions
2D array, per-pixel offset and depth gathers
CALL helpers, 64-bit shifts and guarded uniform compares
high-register shadow operands
Global atomics: untracked 32-bit atomics are routed to their storage buffer.
SHF.R.U64: the lowering no longer shifts by 63.
TEX.F16: results are packed with c0 in the low half, which fixes the missing blue channel.
Uniform bank: a native program's 64 KiB uniform bank is re-uploaded once per frame.
The 11 commits are cherry-picked with -x, and authorship is kept. The only change from the originals is one conflict in kepler_compute.cpp: nx2 doesn't have the skip() logging helper, so those paths return false.
Credits
kraibse: the lowerings and the stand-in fix (scratch/oot-shader-lab)
zortos293 (Lichii): the Ocarina lowering set much of this ports, and the SHF.R fix
Franseven (Quixomatic/Eglantine): the FP16 pack fix and the uniform bank re-upload, which comes from monkeefunnee's raiders-fix
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (0400486024DEC000, 1.1.1, RTX 5090, Vulkan): the title screen and Kokiri Forest (loaded from a save) render. The world was black before. The image is still slightly washed out (possibly auto-exposure), and the load screen's save thumbnails are black; both are separate issues.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed results for out-of-range signed and unsigned right shifts.
Improved shader handling for global atomic operations and additional graphics instructions, helping more games render and compute correctly.
Improved capture of programs that include helper calls and multiple exits.
Improvements
Expanded native image upscaling support, including additional image formats and more reliable source-image selection.
Improved handling of indirectly read graphics data during native rendering.
Ported from zortos293/Lichii 3aa89d1cdb (fix/oot-bloom).
ISETP.EX now computes into a free temporary predicate and merges it with
the accumulate predicate and second destination, instead of rejecting
those forms. RED takes F32 ADD and a signed offset on the register
address. High-register ALD/FADD/FMUL/FFMA operands get shadow copies.
Not ported: the routed SPIR-V GlobalAtomicUMax32 (Eglantine has no
routed global atomic functions yet) and the native compute SSBO sizing
(already present from 2e12e0d).
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (ported the upstream patch hunks and resolved conflicts)
(cherry picked from commit 350b7d8)
Ported from zortos293/Lichii 35c043b3ef (fix/oot-bloom).
Adds uniform IMAD with an immediate addend (UIMAD 0x4a4), signed
REDUX.MIN/MAX, S32 RED, negated scalar F2I, packed F2IP.U8.F32 with an
RZ second source, SHF.R.U64 by an immediate, and shadow operands for the
remaining bloom-capture opcodes.
Eglantine's F2I has no unsigned byte form, so F2I.U8 (which F2IP lowers
to) gets the float clamp to [0, 255] that Lichii's F2I uses. The
bounded-control write_count table is not ported; Eglantine does not
have that call proof.
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (ported the upstream patch hunks and resolved conflicts)
(cherry picked from commit 3f065ef)
Ported from zortos293/Lichii a4cc1e6 (fix/oot-bloom).
Capture now treats CALL.REL.NOINC as a call, as the lowering already
does, so a program whose helpers sit past the EXIT ends at the last RET
instead of running into the next program. USHF and SHF.R.U64 lower to a
full 64-bit right shift clamped at 64, and Maxwell SHR clamps an
unsigned shift of 32 or more to zero instead of sign-filling. USEL takes
a UPn guard. UBREV, UFLO and UPOPC map every uniform register, and
UPOPC marks the program as using the uniform bank.
The bounded-control call-proof changes are not ported; Eglantine does
not have that analysis.
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (ported the upstream patch hunks and tests, resolved conflicts)
(cherry picked from commit bb5998f)
Ported from zortos293/Lichii 18e4efbbb8 (fix/oot-bloom).
@upn UISETP loads the guard and the old output into the predicate file,
so a false guard merges the output back unchanged. SEL takes a uniform
second source like FSEL and FMNMX.
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (ported the upstream patch hunks and tests, resolved conflicts)
(cherry picked from commit edf4eac)
TLD4 accepted only plain 2D gathers with an optional AOFFI. Ocarina also
gathers from 2D arrays, with per-pixel offsets (bits 76-77 = 2) and with
a depth reference (bit 78). The source lists follow Mesa NAK: Ra holds
the coordinates with the array index first, Rb the offsets and then the
reference, and with nothing for Rb the coordinates split evenly across
both. Maxwell TLD4 reads the same lists, so the lowering copies them into
its coordinate and meta registers and sets the type, PTP and DC fields.
FMUL and FADD in register form get shadow operands for high registers.
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (decoded the rejections from the log, wrote the lowering and tests)
(cherry picked from commit f1a5c6e)
All 833 programs from an Ocarina shader dump now lower; the 800 that
already did lower to identical code.
- SGXT takes its signed form (bit 73) as BFE.S32.
- USHF.L.U32.HI with an immediate (0x499) lowers like SHF 0x419, with a
UPn guard; Ocarina's mesh programs use it.
- UIADD3 carries go to and come from any UPn, through P(6-n) and R239 as
UISETP does, not only UP0 and UP1.
- LEA.HI takes a negated Rb (bit 63) when it is not .X.
- SURED takes every op (bits 87-89), which Maxwell SURED reads in the
same order at bits 24-26.
- Shadow operands for LDG, IADD3, FFMA, FMUL, FADD, FSEL, IMNMX, SGXT,
S2R, ISETP and I2F forms the dump uses. An operand may no longer
straddle the reserved boundary or span two borrowed quartets; either
would be renamed to registers that are not adjacent.
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (lowered the dump offline, decoded the rejections, wrote the fixes and tests)
(cherry picked from commit 19e25d0)
Every SPIR-V global atomic threw "SPIR-V Instruction is not
implemented", so a compute program whose atomic address the storage
buffer pass could not track failed to build and its dispatches were
dropped (four Ocarina compute pipelines; the dumps show U32 ADD/MAX,
S32 MIN and F32 ADD reductions).
Each 32-bit global atomic the program uses now gets a function on the
routing global loads and stores already use: the address picks the
candidate storage buffer, and the operation runs on its word. INC, DEC
and F32 add go through the storage buffer CAS loops. 64-bit and packed
forms still throw.
The test emits each of the 12 operations untracked; the modules pass
spirv-val (Vulkan 1.1, standard uniform buffer layout).
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (traced the pipeline failures, wrote the routing and test)
(cherry picked from commit 6b93434)
The Maxwell translator reads bits 20-38 of SHF.R imm as the shift, so the
U64 max-shift bit made every lowered SHF.R.U64 shift by 63 (Ocarina vertex
shader 1a55fa57a335b963 returned bit 63 instead of a 21-bit field).
Ported from zortos293/Lichii fix/oot-bloom 4435506 without its test
file (not in this tree); checked by a field test in ampere_lowering.cpp.
In game it lowers Ocarina's gameplay brightness (mean 0.89 -> 0.82) but
the bloom stays.

Ampere returns a TEX.F16 result as packed pairs, c0 in the low half of
the first destination. The lowering merges the two converted halves
with ISCADD, which shifts op_a up by 16, but gave op_a the low half:
H0 and H1 came out swapped. Ocarina of Time's tensor network reads blue
from .H0, so its image lost blue (gameplay blue mean 0.03 -> 0.60 with
EDEN_NX2_TENSOR=1).

…er frame
Native programs keep tables next to their code in a 64 KiB bank read
with indirect offsets. Writes to that memory can go unnoticed by the
memory tracker, leaving stale host contents.
Ported from Quixomatic/Eglantine dev 9113090 (Franseven, itself from
monkeefunnee/Eglantine raiders-fix cbf7307), with the page constants
qualified as in e732fd1.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (ported the fix)
(cherry picked from commit 5c7da27)
When a tensor network is rejected, the stand-in blits its input to its
output. Outside the known slots it took the first same-format pair in
cbuf0+0x80..0x11c, which in Ocarina of Time's gameplay was a 4x4 image
onto a 1920x1080 target and a 120x67 one over the 2560x1440 frame: the
3D scene went black.
The handles the program itself reads (TEX/TLD/TLD4) and stores to
(SUST.P) through cbuf0 are tried first, and every pair must keep the
aspect ratio and scale by at most 4. Input and output may differ in
format, and an E5B9G9R9 input (no 2D surface format) is blitted
through a source format override in the texture cache, which on
Vulkan samples the source through a plain view.
Checked in game (hidden eden-cli, Kokiri Forest save): the scene draws
again without EDEN_NX2_TENSOR, as bright as the network's own output.
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (found the wrong pairs, wrote the fix, ran the checks)

This PR expands Ampere-to-Maxwell instruction lowering and capture handling, adds SPIR-V routing for global atomics, adjusts signed right-shift translation, and changes native compute image pairing, blit format handling, and buffer-cache tracking for indirect uniform addresses. It also adds regression tests for atomic routing and Ampere lowering.
Changes: SPIR-V global atomics
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Global memory routing src/shader_recompiler/backend/spirv/spirv_emit_context.h, src/shader_recompiler/backend/spirv/spirv_emit_context.cpp
DefineGlobalMemoryFunctions now receives the full program. The routing callback also receives the selected storage buffer and word index.
Used 32-bit global atomic operations now dispatch through generated helpers. The regression test checks emitted atomic instructions and function calls.
Ampere-to-Maxwell lowering and capture
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Register mapping and 64-bit shifts src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h, src/tests/video_core/ampere_lowering.cpp
Register-pressure preparation handles more operand layouts and enforces reserved-register boundaries. Lowering adds 64-bit shift paths and tests for shifts and reserved-register cases.
Uniform, predicate, and arithmetic operations src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h, src/tests/video_core/ampere_lowering.cpp
Lowering adds or adjusts uniform operations, reductions, conversions, comparisons, selects, carry handling, LEA, SGXT, and SURED. Tests check uniform operations, guarded comparisons, and related instruction output.
Bound TLD4 lowering adds array, offset, and depth-comparison forms. FP16 texture-result packing order changes. Gather tests check emitted fields and reject an unsupported offset mode.
Program capture flow src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/program_capture.h, src/tests/video_core/ampere_lowering.cpp
Capture treats NOINC calls as call targets and completes at an EXIT after the last target. Tests cover helper returns and multiple exits.
Maxwell signed right shift
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Signed shift clamp src/shader_recompiler/frontend/maxwell/translate/impl/integer_shift_right.cpp
For non-wrapped shifts, signed instructions now use an arithmetic-shift clamp value; unsigned instructions use zero.
Native compute image pairing and blits
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Program handles and image pairing src/video_core/engines/kepler_compute.h, src/video_core/engines/kepler_compute.cpp
KeplerCompute scans program code for texture-read and surface-store handles. Image-pair eligibility checks now include width, ratio, and address conditions.
Image formats and blit source selection src/video_core/engines/kepler_compute.cpp, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache_base.h, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache.h
Native compute selects input and output formats and uses a temporary source-format override for E5B9G9R9 input. TextureCache selects a source view according to runtime blit support.
BufferCache tracks native indirect uniform addresses per frame and marks eligible mapped portions of 64 KiB native-tiling uniform buffers as CPU-modified.
The native compute upscale path can pick wrong images after a shader address is reused, and the newly accepted shared-exponent input cannot produce a valid blit on OpenGL. A larger uniform binding at an already-refreshed address can also keep stale bank contents within a frame. These affect rendering correctness in specific cases, so they should be addressed or knowingly accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to b536a
The new fallback can reuse image-handle offsets from an earlier program at the same address, potentially overwriting an unintended image. The demonstrated exposure is limited to resources of the running game; host-memory compromise was not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · architecture · inferred: The new process-wide image-handle cache treats a GPU program address as permanent program identity. NativeImageHandles returns cached offsets without rereading code, while fallback execution resolves those offsets against current launch resources. If code or its memory owner changes at the same address, stale offsets can select an unintended current-guest destination. Dimension and aspect-ratio checks constrain image shape, not program-generation identity. Existing shader invalidation does not invalidate this cache; actual occurrence in a supplied workload was not demonstrated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported attack source is guest shader code and launch-resource metadata. Atomic helpers select discovered storage-buffer descriptors rather than directly dereferencing arbitrary host pointers, and fallback image selection resolves current guest TIC entries. The inspected evidence supports possible corruption of current guest GPU resources, but does not establish access to another tenant, host credentials, or arbitrary host memory.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A program-address reuse sequence can retain old read/store offsets, resolve them against a later launch's constant buffer, and select an unintended image that passes shape checks. This is the retained resource-identity concern. It is not evidence of cross-guest data disclosure: the cache stores offsets, while image contents and handles are resolved from the current memory manager.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Vulkan lists robustBufferAccess as mandatory, queries it during device suitability checks, and uses the queried feature chain for device creation. This is significant counterevidence to an unchecked-host-write interpretation of native atomic routing. The inspected constructor nevertheless continues after an unsuitable-driver result, so the mandatory-feature declaration alone does not prove enforcement in every runtime configuration.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Normal fallback blits delegate source preparation and destination modification tracking to the texture cache. The temporary shared-exponent source-format override is cleared after either boolean success or failure. These normal-return controls do not establish cleanup after exceptions or correct resource identity after program replacement.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Associate cached image-handle analysis with the memory owner and program-content generation, or invalidate it alongside shader code. Independently, explicit native buffer-length checks could reduce dependence on backend robustness; that is defense in depth for a pre-existing routing condition, not a verified new vulnerability.

Explanation
The title names the Ocarina of Time black 3D scene fix and the video_core and shader areas, which matches the main objective in the PR objectives. The changeset includes upscale stand-in changes in video_core, shader lowerings in the Ampere and Maxwell frontends, and global atomic routing in the SPIR-V backend. The title covers the primary user-facing goal and does not cover every detail, which is expected. The title is short, single-sentence, and specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR addresses the active coding target in #589. It lowers opcode 0x4a4 through the uniform arithmetic path and adds coverage for guarded uniform comparisons. It adds TLD4 array, per-pixel-offset, and depth-reference lowerings, which covers the reported texture-gather rejection. It also replaces the incorrect upscale image selection with native-program TEX/TLD/TLD4 and SUST.P handle discovery, validates scale and aspect ratio, and supports E5B9G9R9 input. These changes address the black render area and the reported matrix-multiply/upscale path. Regression tests cover the key lowerings, capture behavior, and upscale-related shader forms.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within #589 and the PR intent. The global atomic routing, SHF.R.U64 correction, TEX.F16 packing, high-register handling, CALL capture, and uniform-bank re-upload support native Ocarina programs that participate in the reported render path. The added tests verify these compatibility changes. No unrelated product area or administrative change is present in the reviewed changes.

Refresh newly covered bank pages when a larger binding reuses an address.
The per-frame set stores only device_addr. The first binding at an address refreshes only min(mapped_size, size) bytes, where size is the guest binding size clamped to 0x10000. A later binding at the same address in the same frame fails the insert(...).second check and skips the refresh. Its pages beyond the first extent are not refreshed.
On the classic cached path, SynchronizeBuffer uses the memory tracker state. If the tracker missed guest writes to those uncovered pages, the host buffer can keep stale contents for that binding. The fast-buffer and stream branches read device memory directly, so they are not affected.
Track the refreshed extent per address instead of a bare set. When a binding needs more bytes than the recorded extent, refresh only the newly covered range. Keep the mapped-prefix stop and the GPU-modified check for that range. The declaration is in src/video_core/buffer_cache/buffer_cache_base.h:382.

Scope the handle cache to the program contents.
If a GPU address is reused for different shader code, this function returns the first shader’s handle offsets without scanning the new code. The upscale can then read or write the wrong image, even when the new program has valid handles. Key the cache by shader identity or invalidate it when the code mapping changes. Do not send E5B9G9R9 through the OpenGL framebuffer blit.
When g_blit_source_format is E5B9G9R9_FLOAT, OpenGL creates the source view as GL_RGB9_E5, attaches it to the read framebuffer, and calls glBlitNamedFramebuffer. GL_RGB9_E5 is not color-renderable, so the read framebuffer is incomplete and the blit cannot copy the image. This input was rejected before this change.
Use a sampled-image copy or a renderable conversion path for E5B9G9R9 on OpenGL before admitting this input.

Update the input-format admission check using shared_exponent_input so E5B9G9R9
is not sent through the OpenGL framebuffer blit path. Keep it rejected unless
the OpenGL path uses a sampled-image copy or renderable conversion for this
format; preserve the existing blit_format checks for other formats.

Lowering: took the PR's RED (F32 reductions, typed register form), TLD4
(offsets, depth compare, arrays) and signed SGXT; kept nx2's SUATOM/SURED,
operand quartet handling and SGXT register form. Program capture counts every
CALL.REL as a call. The upscale stand-in uses the PR's handle search,
aspect-checked pairs and sRGB/E5B9G9R9 formats after nx2's Star Fox and
same-size DLSS checks.
Built #614 on nx2 here and tested it on the configuration the PR has no data for: Windows, AMD, RDNA1, proprietary driver.
Setup: b536a971a5 + e736dfde, MSVC 19.44 Release, RX 5700, Windows 11, Vulkan, EDEN_NX2_SPLIT=2, EDEN_NX2_FENCE_BATCH=1, clean cache/shader/0400486024dec000, 320 s run pressing A to start the game.
compute and graphics rejections: 0
"Native QMD failed": 0
max present: 3600, 32 FPS, frame 31.22 to 31.28 ms
screen: black from the first in-game frame, no HUD, no scene
So the PR does what it says on the rejection side, and on this driver the image is still black. Worth comparing with the Radio: on RADV in the report above the same build renders.
Two things I verified separately that point at the driver rather than at the stand-in:
I ran the standalone reproducer from [Crash] OOT: AMD Vulkan pipeline crash with standalone reproducer (RX 6700 XT) #618 on this card. Both control fragment shaders create their pipelines (VK_SUCCESS), the candidate kills the process inside vkCreateGraphicsPipelines with a segmentation fault. So amdvlk on RDNA1 miscompiles that shader exactly like RDNA2 does.
There is no rejection left to blame: the run has zero rejected programs, so whatever the stand-in does now, it is running with everything accepted, and the frame is still black.
That combination suggests the remaining Windows/AMD black is a broken pipeline that the driver accepts without crashing, which no emulator-side change can fix while the same shader form is emitted. On RADV the same form compiles, which is consistent with the Linux result.
If it helps the PR, I can bisect the candidate shader from #618 down to the feature that triggers the driver bug (per-tap gather offsets, or the F16 packing) and post which modification makes it stop crashing. A minimal trigger is what an AMD report needs, and the same knowledge would tell this project which lowering to avoid on AMD Windows.
@kraibse answering the RADV question first, then asking for the Windows/AMD fix.
Linux / RADV: yes, it works, and it is the only fully working AMD data point we have. From the report earlier in this thread (CachyOS, Ryzen 7 3700X, RX 7800 XT, Mesa RADV, docked, 1x, built at e736dfde plus this PR): the 3D world renders in gameplay where it used to be black with only the HUD, the log shows 0 graphics programs rejected and 0 Draw skipped (no pipeline), and the only rejections left are the 11 HMMA compute programs of the network, which is exactly what makes the stand-in take over. EDEN_NX2_TENSOR=1 and the stand-in give nearly the same image there, so the stand-in is not what makes it dim. Frame time 37-55 ms, and with the Lichii buffer-cache patches it drops to 21-31 ms.
Windows / AMD: still black, and it crashes. Same PR built here, RDNA1 (RX 5700, amdvlk 32.0.21045.16010), MSVC Release, clean shader cache, docked, 1x, EDEN_NX2_SPLIT=2:
0 rejections, 0 "Native QMD failed"
3600 presents in 320 s, 32 FPS, frame 31.22 to 31.28 ms
screen black from the first in-game frame, no HUD, no scene
process dies on its own around 179 s
And I can show the driver is at fault independently of the emulator: the standalone reproducer posted in #618 reproduces on this card with the same shape as on the reporter's RX 6700 XT. Two control fragment shaders return VK_SUCCESS, the candidate one kills the process inside vkCreateGraphicsPipelines with a segmentation fault. So amdvlk miscompiles that shader on RDNA1 as well, which is consistent with Windows being the odd one out while RADV is fine.
You said you might have a fix for the Windows/AMD configuration. If you can point me at the branch or commit, I will build it here and run the same three tests I used above (clean cache, 320 s with input, screenshots each minute), plus a 15 minute run to see whether the 179 s death disappears. That is the fastest way to tell whether the fix is the pipeline form itself or a workaround around it. If you prefer, I can also take the shader from #618, strip the per-tap gather offsets and the F16 packing one at a time, and report which change stops the driver from crashing, which would give us the minimal trigger either way.
Possibly related fix in #541 has yet not been built by us but users affected by the same bug have reported success. Just need confirmation by more testers on other platforms.
Tested #541 on top of this PR on the RDNA1 machine, since you pointed at it: it does not change the result here.
e736dfde + #614 (b536a97) + the one line from #541 supports_conditional_barriers = true
MSVC Release, RX 5700, Windows 11, amdvlk 32.0.21045.16010, docked, 1x, clean shader cache
0 rejections, 0 "Native QMD failed", 3600 presents in 340 s, 32 FPS
screen black from the first in-game frame, process dies on its own
So the conditional barrier path is not what breaks this card. #541 may well fix the crash it was written for, it just is not this one.
What I do have now is a smaller reproducer. I ran spirv-reduce from the Vulkan SDK against the shader from #618, using a test script that only checks whether vkCreateGraphicsPipelines still kills the process, and it went from 6270 instructions and 103 KB down to 1618 instructions and 34 KB while still crashing the driver. A second pass is running to shrink it further.
For the record, these are the hypotheses that are already excluded by test, each one changing the shader and re-running the reproducer:
subgroup ops present in a control shader that does not crash, 12 ops there vs 8 in the culprit
gathers none in either shader
image samples all 10 replaced by OpUndef, still crashes
descriptor count control shader with one extra sampled image (39 -> 40 bindings) returns VK_SUCCESS
bitfield extract 75 occurrences rewritten as shift+and, still crashes
conditional barriers #541 applied, game still black
Once the reduction settles I will post the minimal shader here and in #618, together with the driver version and the exact exception. That should be small enough to be worth sending to AMD, and small enough that someone reading the code can see which construct amdvlk refuses.
Test data for #614 from an ARM Linux handheld, in case it helps the "black in-game" comparison.
Setup: AYN Thor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Adreno 740, Turnip Mesa 26.2.4, 11.2 GiB RAM, ArmadaOS. Build b536a97 (branch of this PR), GCC 13, no PGO, NCE, 1x, clean shader cache, legally dumped game. No EDEN_NX2_TENSOR.
Result: title screen and the opening text render correctly, New Game works, then the screen stays black from the first in-game frame. No HUD and no scene.

Pressing A, + and X with + did not change the image in the handheld run. The process stayed alive and kept presenting at about 60 FPS, so this looks like the same symptom as the RX 5700 report above, not a crash or a memory problem.
Before this PR on the same device: with Lichii 62ba834 + #102 the huge compute SPIR-V (up to 327,665 words) pinned Turnip for minutes, a single worker ran out of memory at about 3 min (8.66 GiB RSS plus about 6.4 GiB swap), and the title screen never appeared. This PR removes all of that here, which is a big improvement for low-memory ARM devices.
Not conclusive: runs with EDEN_NX2_SPLIT=2 EDEN_NX2_FENCE_BATCH=1 and with EDEN_NX2_TENSOR=1 produced no captures in 7 min, and their logs stop at 4 to 6 s. I have not worked out why yet, so please treat those two as unverified.
Note for testers: on aarch64, PGO builds break ZBIC decompression in this game (Lichii #95), so use a non-PGO build.
If there is a specific log or capture that would help tell a driver issue from a missing pass, tell me which and I can run it.
Frame dump evidence from this machine, since it names which of the two passes is failing.
Captured with the Lichii build 75 frame dump (EDEN_NX2_FRAME_DUMP, _AT=file), in game, after starting a new game, on the RDNA1 machine:
"passes": 2, "draws": 1, "dispatches": 0
0000_pass000_d0-0_rt0_B10G11R11_FLOAT_1920x1080 black
0001_pass001_tex00_s4_tic890_B10G11R11_1920x1080 black (the sampled input)
0002_pass001_d0-1_rt0_A8B8G8R8_SRGB_2560x1440 black
0003_present_A8B8G8R8_UNORM_2560x1440 black
0004_present_A8B8G8R8_UNORM_2560x1440 black
Two things this says that the numbers I posted before did not:
The scene pass (pass000, 1920x1080 B10G11R11) is already black before any upscaling happens, and its output is what pass001 samples. So on this machine the stand-in is sampling an already empty image. Whatever fixes the upscale path, the scene pass has to produce something first.
Only one draw is recorded for the whole frame. On the title screen the same build draws the logo and the prompt correctly, so the 2D path submits fine. In game the geometry never reaches the frame.
That second point is the one I would chase: it is not a rejection (0 rejected programs, 0 skipped draws in the same run) and not the upscale, because the upscale is downstream of an already empty target.
If it helps, the sequence I would use to confirm is the live debug server from #111: status and log_tail during a session, to see whether the game issues its draws and they are dropped somewhere, or whether the draw stream itself stops after the menu. I can run that here as soon as there is a Windows package that includes it.
Data point that narrows this down, and it rules out the rejection path as the cause.
I got the boot of this title to zero rejected programs on this machine: 0x4a4 lowering (#604) plus removing the uniform carry-out guard (#638). With that build:
rejected programs at boot 0
presented frames 9600 in 300 s
status bar Game: 32 FPS, Frame: 31.25 ms, HANDHELD, Scale 1x
And the scene is still black. What proves it is a 3D-only problem is that the intro text renders correctly over the black area, frame after frame:
t = 120 s "Within it, an ancient, solitary tree quietly watched over the inhabitants of the forest."
t = 180 s "These forest dwellers were called the Kokiri."
Captured with PrintWindow from the emulator's own window handle, so this is the client area and not whatever happened to be on top of the desktop.
So on RDNA1 with amdvlk: 2D renders, the frame is presented at 32 FPS, no program is discarded, and the 3D pass produces nothing. That matches the RDNA4 report above, which also describes the black screen starting at the Deku Tree dialogue, and it matches the frame dump I posted earlier where pass000 (1920x1080 B10G11R11) is already empty before the upscale samples it.
My read is that this points away from the shader compiler and towards the 3D geometry or attachment path of that pass, since a discarded program would have shown up in the rejection counter and a broken upscale would only affect the final present, not the scene target. I am going to keep digging on the draw side, but if anyone has a capture of this scene from a driver where it works, the comparison that matters is how many draws pass000 receives there versus the one I see here.
Follow-up data for the Thor (Adreno 740, Turnip) is now in #632 (comment). With this PR the huge shader problem is gone there, but the 3D layer is still missing, starting on the title screen, with 16 draws per frame and no indirect draws.
Could someone with a working RADV or NVIDIA build run the small logging patch from that issue and post a few lines from the title and from gameplay? That comparison should show whether the scene is simply never submitted on the Thor.
I tried with the help of Claude Opus 5.5 to debug the visual errors everyone sees. Just tested and tried to fix but without much results. First it was crashing on some configurations and we fixed it, then it was sooo slow and we fixed it, then the intro disappeared and we fixed it. Then we tried a bunch of things even with RenderDoc, too. Initially I was having openviking with ollama loaded so I wasted a bit too much time cause of this. I'm really tired so I'll just upload the report he made cause we made a lot of trials and honestly I forgot many things we tried and found. I'll just say my computer specs first so you can ignore, just in case.

New data that separates two black scenes that were being treated as one.
Everything I posted before was about the boot intro, where I measured black with zero rejected programs. That result stands. But there is a later scene, the castle escape, that fails for a rejection reason, and now I have the log from that exact moment.
Build used: 91d525da3e (predicate combined ISETP, TLD4 array) plus ALD/AST added to the shadow copy switch, MSVC Release, RX 5700, Windows 11, Vulkan, clean shader cache. 300 s of play: 10 rejected programs total, against 69 on the same run without those two changes.
At the castle escape the numbers change completely:
Draw skipped (no pipeline): vs=0x115d737100 ps=0x115d735800 40
rejected programs at that point
9 native matrix multiply
6 native program uses lowering scratch registers
5 native sign extend mode
4 native global reduction mode
3 native texture gather mode
1 unsupported native opcode (0x4a4, compute)
1 warp sum mode, 1 funnel shift mode
The six scratch rejections are all FMUL, FFMA and FADD, for example:
Neither of those opcodes is in the switch inside PrepareRegisterPressure, so they take the default branch, valid goes false and the whole program is rejected even though the body of the lowering does handle FMUL, FADD and FFMA. The same thing happened with ALD and AST, which I have locally:
[op 321 fff47321 000100ff 00000400 000e6800] ALD, dest R244, one component
So the shadow copy table is behind the lowering table: any opcode the lowering accepts but the table does not know rejects the program instead of going through a shadow copy. That is a mechanical gap worth closing in one place, and it explains why the symptom depends on which scene is running rather than on the title.
Two things I am deliberately not claiming:
this is the same bug as the boot intro. It is not, the intro is black with zero rejections on this machine, and the frame dump shows pass000 already empty before the upscale.
that closing the gap fixes the castle scene. I will measure that when the build finishes and post the numbers either way.
The rejected programs here are also worth noting for the vertex side: vs=0x1155670400 appears both as a rejected program and as a skipped draw in the same frame, so this is geometry disappearing before it is drawn, not a texture or present problem.
eglantine.exe (no game) runs, killed by timeout after 25 s, exit 124
Booting Ocarina is where it dies:
eglantine.exe -g oot_v131072.nup
log ends at 4.37 s:
BootGame: Core load completed: elapsed_ms=3074
BootGame: Booting game: 0400486024DEC000
Launch finished: elapsed_ms=3556 running=true
no further log lines, process gone
shell exit code 139 (SIGSEGV)
Same binary, same game, empty APPDATA: also 139, so it is not a stale config. The nx2 build with the same command line boots this title normally, so the game file and the launch arguments are not the variable.
One build note that may matter more than the crash: the link initially failed with
LNK2019 unresolved: BufferCache<...>::BindComputeStorageBuffer
BufferCache<...>::BindGraphicsStorageBuffer
referenced from vk_compute_pipeline.obj, gl_compute_pipeline.obj, vk_graphics_pipeline.obj
because the explicit template instantiation lives in gl_buffer_cache_base.cpp and vk_buffer_cache_base.cpp and MSBuild did not rebuild those two when the header changed. Forcing them to rebuild resolves the link. Anyone building this branch on MSVC with an existing build directory will hit the same thing; a clean configure would not.
I have no stack trace yet, only the exit code and the point in the log where output stops. If it is useful I can run it under a debugger and post the frames, but I wanted to report the reproduction first rather than guess at the cause.
Follow-up with the stack frame, since I said I would post it if I got one.
Ran the same build under lldb (LLVM 20 from the VS Build Tools, no Windows SDK debuggers installed here). It stops with:
Process stopped
* thread #62, name = 'EmuControlThread',
stop reason = Exception 0xc0000005 encountered at address 0x7ff6643449f8:
Access violation reading location 0x00000030
frame #0: eglantine_ootlab.exe
std::optional<unsigned long long> Tegra::MemoryManager::GpuToCpuAddress(unsigned long long) const + 24
Two things worth noting:
It is on EmuControlThread, not the GPU thread, and it is the first thing that fails: the log gets to Core load completed and then stops. Reading 0x30 (a member offset on a null this, or a null page table) points at the memory manager not being reachable from wherever the new code calls it, rather than at a shader path.
EDEN_NX2_BANK_REUPLOAD=0 does not change the outcome, so the uniform bank re-upload commit is not the trigger by itself. Same crash, same place, exit 139.
I do not have a deeper frame list: the MSVC PDB is not being loaded by lldb for the inlined frames below #0, so frame #0 is all I can attribute with confidence. If you have a Windows toolchain that produces a usable PDB for this branch, the caller would be the next thing to look at.
Reproduction command, in case it is useful:
cd <build dir with the DLLs>
EDEN_NX2_BANK_REUPLOAD=0 eglantine.exe -g oot_v131072.nup
Correction to my previous comment: this is not Ocarina specific.
Same build, same machine, different title:
eglantine.exe -g bananza_v320.nup
log stops at "Core load completed" (3.8 s)
exit 139, same access violation in Tegra::MemoryManager::GpuToCpuAddress
So the branch, as built here, fails on boot for every title I have, which points at a platform or build issue rather than at the Ocarina path. Since it also reproduces with EDEN_NX2_BANK_REUPLOAD=0, and the diff against nx2 adds no new GpuToCpuAddress call sites, my best guess is an initialization order or lifetime difference on this platform, but I want to be clear that it is a guess and not something I have proven.
Also worth stating plainly: my build directory was reused across trees, so if anyone wants to check whether this reproduces from a clean configure, that is the first thing to rule out. I did force a rebuild of the two *_buffer_cache_base.cpp translation units to get the link to succeed, which is not a clean configuration either.
AMD test result for this PR (it was only tested on NVIDIA): RX 6750 XT (RDNA2), Windows 11, Vulkan, built locally with MSYS2 MinGW-w64 GCC 16.2 from head b536a97 (which includes nx2 e736dfd).
Good: rejected native graphics programs go from 63 on plain nx2 to 0, and OoT now renders the 3D scene after the intro cutscene instead of staying black.
Not good: the image is corrupted (noise/banding, ~11 FPS at 2x, "Frame: nan ms"). The log has 32 criticals "texture format=0 srgb=false components={0 0 0 0}" (format_lookup_table.cpp:278) and 9 "index <= tic_limit" (shader_environment.cpp:345), plus 21 compute shaders still rejected ("native matrix multiply"). Not sure if these are related to the corruption.
After about 5 minutes it crashes inside amdvlk64.dll (32.0.21045.16010, 0xc0000005, fault offset 0xaff2e7), details and full log in #618.
Linux / RADV / RDNA4 data point for this PR: it renders in-game, but the image is covered in noise.
Setup: CachyOS (kernel 7.3.1), Ryzen 9 9950X, RX 9070 XT (RADV GFX1201, Mesa 26.2.6). Built locally from the merge of this PR into nx2 (47a54a9bc4 = e736dfd + b536a971a5) with clang, Release + PGO. Handheld, 2x, GPU accuracy High, async shaders on, ASTC recompression BC3, SMAA, NVDEC CPU. No EDEN_NX2_* variables set. OoT 0400486024DEC000 from .nup.
Result:
The title, intro and first gameplay scene (Link's house) render: geometry, Link, Navi and the HUD are all there. On the stock daily from the same day, the 3D scene stays black (about 213 rejection lines in that log).
The whole 3D image is covered in coloured per-pixel noise, with washed-out pink/green tints (screenshot above). This looks like the same "noise/banding" @NicoCancedda reported on RDNA2 / Windows, so it is probably not driver-specific.
About 21 FPS in Link's house, with occasional hitches of up to ~1.7 s while pipelines build.
No crash or freeze in this run. The log has 11 format_lookup_table.cpp:280 texture format=... asserts (e.g. format=71 srgb=false components={0 1 3 4}) and 8 index <= tic_limit asserts.
Follow-up to my RX 9070 XT / RADV report above: **the noise is tied to 2x resolution scaling.**
Same build, same save. The only changes were resolution 2x → 1x, ScaleForce → Bilinear, and SMAA → FXAA. With those, the per-pixel colour noise is completely gone (zoomed crop above: 2x on the left, 1x on the right). @NicoCancedda's noisy run was also at 2x, so it may be worth checking whether it goes away at 1x on RDNA2 too.
Still present at 1x:
The title screen background is black (no Hyrule Field behind the logo).
Outdoors in Kokiri Forest the image is washed out white, and Link turns semi-transparent. It looks like the "objects disappearing every other frame" plus bloom flash already described for NVIDIA/Linux above, so it's not AMD-specific.
Correction to my earlier Thor reports (Adreno 740, Turnip 26.2.4). I had compared against the wrong baseline.
With the official daily-20261105 (e736dfd) AppImage, a clean default config and vulkan_device=1 (on this device index 0 is llvmpipe), Ocarina of Time renders correctly on the title screen and through the intro. The title shows the rotating 3D scenes (field, farm, Lake Hylia), then the tapestry and the 3D scene of Link sleeping. Gameplay is then black with no HUD for the remaining 10 minutes, at a stable 60 FPS. That matches the stock behaviour reported on PC, which is what this PR fixes.
With b536a97 (this PR) built locally (GCC 13, Release, no PGO, Ubuntu 24.04 container), even the title background and the intro are black. On the title it issues only about 16 draws per frame (numbers in #632).
So on Adreno either one of this PR's commits turns off the 3D scene from the very first frame, or my local build does. Next I will build stock e736dfd with the same toolchain to tell those apart, and bisect the 11 commits if needed. If anyone already has an aarch64 CI artifact of this PR, that would answer it faster.
Found it on the Thor (Adreno 740, Turnip), and a correction to my earlier draw-count reasoning.
The black title and intro come from this PR's last commit, b536a97 ("upscale stand-in takes its images from the native program"). I built 8de2d42 (this PR minus that one commit) with the same toolchain and a clean config. The title background is back: the moonlit field and the field with flowers, the same as the official daily. With b536a97 on top it is black.
Correction: I said in #632 that the scene is never submitted because the title issues about 16 draws per frame. That reasoning was wrong. The title background and the intro scenes play as AV1 video and are composited, so the draw count is equally low when the picture is correct (16 per frame on 8de2d42 too). On Adreno, the stand-in in b536a97 appears to draw a black image over the composited video. It may be picking up the wrong images or running when it should not, on frames where no network output is pending.
Next I will check gameplay on 8de2d42. If gameplay needs the stand-in, a guard that skips it when the selected input is not a real scene target would keep both working. I can test a patch if someone has a suggestion.

Summary
In gameplay the 3D world is black and only the HUD (hearts, button prompts) draws.
The game renders the scene at a lower resolution and upscales it with a tensor-core network. Without
EDEN_NX2_TENSOR, a plain upscale (the stand-in) is used instead. In gameplay this failed for two reasons:cbuf0+0x80..0x11c, which in gameplay was a 4x4 and a 120x67 image blitted over the frame. This PR brings the Ocarina work from

Testing
Games tested:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (
0400486024DEC000, 1.1.1, RTX 5090, Vulkan): the title screen and Kokiri Forest (loaded from a save) render. The world was black before. The image is still slightly washed out (possibly auto-exposure), and the load screen's save thumbnails are black; both are separate issues.Checklist
