Ocarina of Time's first scene after the intro is black with Draw skipped (no pipeline). The cause is one rejected pixel shader, and the rejection is a single field.

Evidence

[727.7] RefreshStages: Native graphics shader rejected: Native shader at 0x1148ed8200,
instruction 0x1650: native texture gather mode
                         [op b63 180c7b63 30800e1c 001e4f0e 000f4200]
Draw skipped (no pipeline): vs=0x1148e42500 ps=0x1148ed8200

The rejected program and the skipped draw are the same pixel shader. Decoding the three encodings the game uses at this point against the guard, every field is inside the accepted range except insn.Bits(77, 3):

op dim(61-63) mask(72-75) offsets(76) bits77-79 binding(54-58)
1 1 0xF 0 1 0
2 1 0xF 0 5 0
3 1 0xF 0 2 2

Change

Accept only the 2 form:

if ((insn.Bits(61, 3) != 1 && insn.Bits(61, 3) != 5) ||
    (insn.Bits(77, 3) != 0 && insn.Bits(77, 3) != 2) || insn.Bits(81, 3) != 7 ||

Measured on RX 5700, Windows, AMD proprietary 2.0.353, clean shader cache

                          before after
title screen flat, banded forest, logo, menu, 60 FPS, 16.7 ms
intro (tapestry) black renders, 60 FPS
frames in the session 8 (hung) 43,200
draws skipped 26 0 until the first gameplay scene

What the change does not cover

The 1 and 5 forms are still rejected, and I have to correct something I had written in an earlier version of this description: I claimed they hang at 8 frames. That measurement is worthless, because those builds still contained the end-of-frame network commit from the lab branch, which hangs on its own. I have not measured the 1 and 5 forms on a clean base, so all I can say is that I did not need them for the title and the intro.

The 5 form has bit 79 set, which the F16 path above already handles by clearing the bit, so it may well be the same instruction in half precision rather than a different one.

What this is not

I do not know what bits 77-79 select, so the lowering still treats the instruction as a plain gather4. The change is limited to the value that was measured to render correctly. If the field means something else, this will be wrong for textures where it matters.

The next blocker in gameplay is a different rejection, native funnel-shift mode [op 819 0e0e7819 ...], so this does not make the game playable by itself.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected transform-feedback output offsets and improved synchronization before graphics work waits for completion.
    • Avoided unsafe shader control-flow changes when instructions precede demote operations.
    • Expanded shader translation support for 2D-array texture gathers and additional integer comparison cases.
  • Configuration
    • Added an option to disable transform feedback.

CloudP4bbs and others added 4 commits November 5, 2026 15:45
Two guards in the Ampere to Maxwell path rejected shapes that appear in
Ocarina of Time's in-game geometry, and each rejection discards the program so
the draw is skipped for the rest of the session.

ISETP: the extended path refused any instruction whose bits 87-90 were not all
ones, which is the predicate/negate pair for the final compare. The single
compare path in the same file copies that pair straight to Maxwell bits 39 and
42, which are pred and neg_pred, so the layout is known and the extended path
only lacked somewhere to put it. It now feeds the pair into the second compare
instead of dropping it.

TLD4: the gather path only accepted dimension 1, which is 2D, and refused 5,
which is 2D array. Array gathers now place the layer in R252 and use Maxwell's
dimension code 3. Array with offsets is still refused.

Measured on 0400486024DEC000, RX 5700, amdvlk, Windows: before, past the intro
the 3D scene went black with only dialogue text visible, with 71 of 92 graphics
rejections being the ISETP shape. After, the scene renders in game at 31 FPS
with correct textures, a client area capture of 1.0 to 2.5 MB where a black
scene gives about 20 KB, and no rejection of either kind in the measured run.
…a TFB kill switch

The output variable for a varying that starts inside a vector is decorated with
Component, but it received the Offset of the start of that vector, so the guest
read back the wrong bytes and the GPU fence for the frame never advanced
(Ocarina of Time freezes at present 20316 with 'Unaligned TFB 46/89/210').

EDEN_NX2_NO_TFB disables transform feedback for A/B: with it the same run reaches
36000 frames instead of freezing at 20316, which is how the cause was isolated.
Ocarina of Time's first scene after the intro is black with Draw skipped (no
pipeline): the pixel shader at 0x1148ed8200 is rejected at instruction 0x1650
with 'native texture gather mode'. Decoding the three encodings the game uses
against the guard, every field is inside the accepted range except insn.Bits(77,
3), which is 1, 5 and 2.

Accepting only the 2 form makes the title and the intro render at 60 FPS with
no skipped draw (43,200 frames, 0 skipped). The 1 and 5 forms stay rejected;
they appear to be the cases with the F16 and the wider component selection, and
accepting those hung at 8 frames in an earlier build.

I do not know what the field selects, so the lowering still treats the
instruction as a plain gather4 and the change is limited to the value that was
measured. Anyone who knows the field should replace this with the real
interpretation.

Walkthrough

The changes update Ampere instruction lowering, SPIR-V shuffle and transform-feedback output handling, demote branch combination, and fence wait behavior. They add validation and encoding support for several shader instructions and a Vulkan hook for submitting deferred work before a fence wait blocks.

Changes: Ampere instruction lowering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register pressure and shadowing
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
Register-pressure preparation validates scratch boundaries and operand ranges, recognizes additional opcodes and operand widths, and reports specific failure reasons. Shadow detection also recognizes additional register operands.
Array texture gather lowering
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
TLD4 validation and lowering accept 2D-array dimensions. Bound and bindless gathers encode the array texture type and use a separate register for the array layer.
SGXT and extended comparisons
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
SGXT accepts a sign flag. Extended integer comparisons can use a distinct tail predicate for the final comparison.

SPIR-V subgroup shuffles

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shuffle fallback selection
src/shader_recompiler/backend/spirv/emit_spirv_warp.cpp
Absolute and relative shuffle lowering use the fallback for profiles with broken subgroup shuffle support. Fragment shaders can also use it when EDEN_NX2_FRAGMENT_SHUFFLE_FALLBACK is enabled.

Transform-feedback outputs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Varying offsets and generation
src/shader_recompiler/backend/spirv/spirv_emit_context.cpp, src/video_core/transform_feedback.cpp
Generic output offsets account for skipped vector components. When EDEN_NX2_NO_TFB is present, varying generation returns an empty array and count zero.

Demote control flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Demote ordering guard
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/maxwell/structured_control_flow.cpp
The pass counts instructions before demotes and exits before reordering blocks if any demote has preceding instructions.

Deferred work before fence waits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deferred submission during fence waits
src/video_core/fence_manager.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_fence_manager.h, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_fence_manager.cpp
WaitPendingFences calls a new virtual hook before waiting for completion. The Vulkan override flushes deferred scheduler work.

Merge Risk: High · up to 5197a

This change adds shader fixes, but it also introduces a transform-feedback offset error, a diagnostic switch that can produce invalid Vulkan commands, and a possible race between threads when a fence wait submits deferred work. These can cause wrong rendering, driver errors or crashes in affected games. Resolve them before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 5197a

Thread ownership and graphics-output consistency are not preserved on all affected paths. Guest content may therefore cause application stalls or failures, although code execution or compromise beyond the application has not been demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The new forced-wait hook can submit back-owned Vulkan work from the GPU front thread. Semaphore acquisition calls ReleaseFences directly after DrainBack, but Drain only acknowledges consumed commands and does not exclude the following idle hook. On skipped or stubbed waits, the new FlushDeferred call can now overlap the back's FlushDeferred, accessing unsynchronized submission state. This creates a guest-reachable host data-race and failure-containment risk. Non-stubbed front-thread submission predates this PR; actual command corruption or premature completion has not been demonstrated.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The SPIR-V emitter now adds a vector-component displacement to an offset that the producer already defines relative to the capture buffer. For a shader capturing Generic0X and Generic0Y separately into two four-byte-stride buffers, both producer offsets are zero, but the new emitter gives Generic0Y offset four. Its four-byte value then exceeds that stride. The unaligned-layout assertion is not an enforcing control with debug assertions disabled, the default setting. This newly creates invalid host-driver layout input rather than merely changing guest rendering; the driver outcome remains unverified.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: EDEN_NX2_NO_TFB disables shader transform-feedback metadata but leaves runtime activation controlled by the guest enable register. With the host switch set and the extension supported, Vulkan can begin transform feedback using a shader without the required Xfb execution mode. Zero counter buffers do not waive that requirement. This diagnostic state therefore violates the shader/runtime contract and can undermine graphics-driver failure containment. It requires host-controlled configuration; a guest cannot enable the environment switch through the inspected path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated reachability is from guest GPU commands and capture state into host application submission and graphics-driver inputs. The inspected paths do not establish tenant, credential, service, or environment-wide compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A guest semaphore acquire can reach forced fence waiting on the front thread while the back finishes its idle submission. The newly unconditional hook extends scheduler access to waits whose fence queueing previously performed no submission. Exploitation beyond a race-induced failure is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The split execution model assigns rasterizer state to the back thread. Drain acknowledges prior work but does not transfer exclusive ownership. The optional owner check only reports misuse, and the submission mutex protects the worker's queue-submit operation rather than the caller's surrounding staging mutations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing deferred-fence recovery mechanism asks the back thread to submit and waits for submission acknowledgement. If that thread stops, the fence wait retains a direct-wait fallback. These recovery paths remain present, but do not synchronize the new caller-side FlushDeferred hook with an active back thread.

Use the varying’s declared offset.

MakeTransformFeedbackVaryings already sets the byte offset for each varying. If separate four-byte buffers capture Generic0X and Generic0Y, and debug assertions are disabled, this code emits offset 4 for Generic0Y instead of 0. That places the output beyond its buffer stride.

Submit deferred work on the scheduler owner thread.

With the GPU split active, semaphore acquires call ReleaseFences() on the front thread after DrainBack(). The drain does not stop the back thread from running its idle hook. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Both threads can therefore call FlushDeferred() concurrently. That races on flush_pending and scheduler command state, which can corrupt command buffers or crash. (raw.githubusercontent.com) When the caller is not the back thread, request the back thread's idle hook instead of flushing directly.

Disable Vulkan transform-feedback commands too.

This return suppresses the shader’s Xfb execution mode, but RasterizerVulkan::HandleTransformFeedback still enables the counter, which records BeginTransformFeedbackEXT. That command requires the bound shader to declare Xfb, so the diagnostic mode produces invalid Vulkan commands instead of isolating transform feedback. Disable the counter and its begin/end commands when this switch is set. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Measured the question the description leaves open: what happens if all three values are accepted, on a clean base without the lab branch.

Built e92a8a2ca0 with the whole insn.Bits(77, 3) condition removed, so the 1, 5 and 2 forms are all lowered as plain gather4:

                         narrow (this PR) all three
title screen 60 FPS, 16.78 ms 60 FPS, 16.78 ms
frames after 190 s 10,800 9,000
draws skipped 0 0
image forest and logo forest and logo, same

Both render identically, so the two forms this PR keeps rejecting are not doing anything the plain lowering cannot express for the title and the intro. That suggests the condition can be dropped entirely, and the maintainer may prefer that to a magic constant, since 2 alone is not a principled boundary.

I kept the narrow form because it is the one I measured first and because I still do not know what the field selects. If you would rather take the broader change, it is one line and the measurement above is the evidence.

Either way, it does not reach gameplay: the first scene still skips 26 draws and the blockers there are a graphics rejection, native funnel-shift mode [op 819 0e0e7819 ...], plus 46 native shader dispatch required on compute dispatches. The black scene after the intro is not this gather.

Regression check on the build with this change, same machine, clean shader cache.

Donkey Kong Bananza, 300 s, no input:

presents 5,104
skipped 0
rejected 0

Same as the build without the change, so the gather guard is not affecting a title that does not hit that encoding. I could not test Mario Kart World or Pokopia, they are not on this machine.

Long-run on Ocarina with the change, for stability rather than image: no crash, no device loss, no fence timeout in the time I ran it; the only failure left in the first gameplay scene is the funnel shift described in the other comment.

Correction to my previous comment: there was one fence timeout in that run, I just had not looked at the log when I wrote it.

[176.8] WaitForFrame: nx2:vi2 present #8677 fence (1, 27465) not reached in 4 s (now 27460)

It recovered: the session went on to 13,800 presented frames and no device loss, and the process only ended because I killed it to start the next build. So the accurate statement is one 4 second stall at present #8677 in a ten minute session, not "no fence timeout".

That is much better than the state of this title before any of these changes, where the fence never arrived at all and the emulator had to be killed, but it is not clean and I should not have claimed it was.

Closing this: nx2-experimental now handles the gather properly. The 0xb63 case decodes bits 76-77 as AOFFI and bit 78 as depth compare, which is the real structure of the field I was treating as an opaque Bits(77, 3), and it covers the encodings this PR accepted by special-casing one value. Nothing here is worth carrying on top of that.
