The app asks for something Google Play won't give it, and runs something Play makes us justify. It requests REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS and opens the direct "let this app ignore battery optimisation" dialog. Play allows that permission only for chat, VoIP, safety, automation and peripheral apps, and CashPilot is none of them. The heartbeat also ran every 30 seconds from an always-on special-use foreground service with a permanent notification, which Play asks every app to justify. Both changes hold for F-Droid too.

What changes

  • Heartbeats run on WorkManager every 15 minutes, the shortest period it allows (service/HeartbeatWorker.kt). The app also sends one when it is opened and one when the server URL or key changes, so a fix to the address is tried at once. The foreground service, its notification, the boot receiver and the POST_NOTIFICATIONS request are gone. WorkManager restores the schedule after a reboot.
  • The last report survives process death. Android now stops the app between runs, so Heartbeat writes the last report time, the failure flag and the last earnings figure to disk and reads them back at startup. Without that, every cold start would say "no heartbeat yet" for up to 15 minutes.
  • The dashboard says how fresh the report is: "Last report 6 min ago · sent every 15 min", instead of a line that read like live monitoring.
  • The battery button opens Android's battery-optimisation list, which needs no permission. The setup text tells the user to choose All apps, then CashPilot, then Don't optimize. Turning it off is now described as optional: it keeps reports on time.
  • Docs, the store description, PUBLISHING.md and CLAUDE.md describe the new behaviour.

Because the periodic run and the run on opening the app can now overlap, a few rules keep them from undoing each other:

  • One report at a time, under a process-wide lock, and each reads the settings when it starts.
  • A key the server issues is stored only if the server URL and key still match what the request used, and a 401 clears the per-worker key only if it is still the refused one. After that 401 the report retries once with the fleet key, so a phone that moved servers enrolls at once.
  • The stored result remembers which server it came from. Changing or clearing the URL forgets the report time and earnings at once, so one server's result never shows under another.
  • Returning to the app (onStart) asks for a report, not only a cold start.

How it's checked

BackgroundPolicyTest (Robolectric, against the merged manifest and the real WorkManager) fails if:

  • the merged manifest requests REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS or FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE (positive control: INTERNET must be visible);
  • any service declares the special-use foreground type (positive control: the notification listener must be listed);
  • any code line opens ACTION_REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS;
  • the schedule isn't exactly one 15-minute periodic job that needs a network, or a second start adds another;
  • two "report now" requests leave more than one pending;
  • the worker does anything but succeed quietly when no server is set;
  • the stored report doesn't come back after a restart, or a corrupt stored figure crashes startup instead of reading as unknown.

I watched it go red. With REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS put back in the manifest, 1 of its 8 tests failed.

It also fails on main. The three tests that compile there (manifest, special-use service, source scan) all fail on main at 7ddb4c6: HeartbeatService is declared special-use, the exemption permission is requested, and SetupScreen.kt and SettingsScreen.kt open the direct dialog. The other five test HeartbeatWorker and Heartbeat, which don't exist on main.

The full suite ran locally in the CI container: 429 tests, 0 failures, verifyRoborazziDebug green, lint clean against the baseline (36 warnings, down from 41), and assembleDebug builds.

Don't release before the server changes

The CashPilot server marks a worker offline after 180 seconds without a heartbeat (STALE_WORKER_SECONDS = 180 in the server's app/main.py), and the first offline push goes out immediately. With a heartbeat every 15 minutes, every phone would read offline most of the time and trigger an offline alert at least every 6 hours (the push cooldown). The server needs a longer threshold for Android workers first. About 45 minutes, three missed periods, matches what the 180 seconds means for a 30-second worker. Merging this is safe; tagging a release from it before the server ships that change is not.

Worth knowing

  • WorkManager's own merged manifest still lists FOREGROUND_SERVICE and RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED. They are for its optional foreground worker, which we never start, and for restoring the schedule. No service in the merged manifest has a foreground type.
  • WorkManager now starts on demand. CashPilotApp implements Configuration.Provider, and the manifest removes the androidx.startup WorkManager initializer, as lint requires for that setup.
  • Robolectric doesn't run startup providers, so this is also what lets every Robolectric test start the app.
  • On an idle phone Android can stretch the 15 minutes to roughly an hour. The earnings "may be out of date" label already starts at 1 hour, and the troubleshooting page explains the delay.
  • Users upgrading from 0.4.0 lose the permanent notification.
  • Settings.heartbeatIntervalSeconds stays in the data class, unused, because a contract test destructures it by position. docs/configuration.md says so.

…y restricts

The heartbeat ran every 30 s from a special-use foreground service and the app
asked for REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS through the direct dialog. Play
allows that permission only for chat, VoIP, safety, automation and peripheral
apps, and a special-use service needs a justification this app does not have.

Heartbeats now run on WorkManager every 15 minutes, plus once on app open and
on a server URL or key change. The last report and earnings are kept on disk so
the dashboard survives process death, and it says how old the last report is.
The battery button opens the settings list, which needs no permission.
BackgroundPolicyTest checks the merged manifest and the real schedule.

Walkthrough

The app replaces its foreground heartbeat service with WorkManager jobs. It sends reports every 15 minutes and queues immediate reports when the app opens or server details change. It persists report status and earnings, removes related service and permission declarations, and updates battery-optimization guidance.

Changes: Heartbeat reporting migration

Layer / File(s) Summary

- Around line 143-150: Serialize heartbeat state updates and persistence across

- Around line 143-150: Update Heartbeat.sendOnce so a blank settings.serverUrl
clears the retained per-app earnings through the existing persistence mechanism
instead of returning with stale values; ensure the cleared state survives
restart and app cards hide the figures. Preserve the no-send behavior while the
server is unconfigured.
- Around line 184-201: Separate issued-key persistence failures from the
successful `client.post` heartbeat result: keep the accepted heartbeat and fresh

the key was adopted.

Review comments at
@app/src/main/java/com/cashpilot/android/service/HeartbeatWorker.kt:
- Around line 24-28: Coordinate the HeartbeatWorker schedule and server
offline-alert policy before release so Android’s restricted-standby delays do
not trigger false alerts; establish a server threshold that accommodates those
delays rather than assuming a 45-minute threshold is sufficient.

Review comments at @docs/configuration.md:
- Line 47: Update the WorkManager scheduling sentence to clarify that heartbeat
reporting runs no foreground service and shows no notification; avoid implying
the app runs no service, since AppNotificationListener still runs as a service.
- Line 44: Update the report response handling so a 401 clears workerKey only
when it still matches the key used for that rejected request. Preserve a newer
key enrolled by an overlapping report.
- Line 44: Update the server-change flow described by the heartbeat
configuration so the immediate report uses the new server’s fleet key, not the
previous server’s worker key. Ensure the report can enroll with the new
credentials after a 401 rather than leaving enrollment to a later periodic run;
the provided diff does not identify the implementation symbol, so locate the
immediate-report path triggered by a server URL or key change.
- Line 16: Update the heartbeat response handling so an issued enrollment key is
applied only when the server details still match those used for that request,
preserving any URL or key changed in the meantime. Locate the code that applies
the heartbeat’s returned key and establish how the request’s server details can
be compared with the current settings before updating them.

Review comments at @docs/index.md:
- Line 56: Update the app’s foreground-return path in the heartbeat/report flow
so reopening an existing activity requests an immediate report even when
onCreate does not run; preserve the periodic reporting behavior.

Review comments at @docs/troubleshooting.md:
- Line 19: Update the heartbeat-gap explanation in the troubleshooting
documentation to avoid attributing every missed report to Android or promising a
maximum delay. Describe Android idle scheduling delays, connectivity issues, and
manufacturer background limits as possible causes; clarify that 15 minutes is
the schedule, not a guaranteed reporting interval, and advise checking the
phone’s network connection when reports stop.
- Line 37: The red-dot troubleshooting guidance covers connectivity and
certificate failures but omits reachable-server rejections; update the “Cause”
guidance to include 401 and 5xx responses and direct users to the authentication
and server-error checks above, noting that the browser check will not diagnose
these failures.

Review comments at @docs/usage.md:
- Line 10: Associate each report result in the server-line dashboard flow with
the configured server URL at the time of the report, and display its status only
when that identity matches the currently configured URL. Preserve the existing
status behavior for matching servers and hide stale results after the URL
changes.
- Line 10: Update the server-line description to label the displayed timestamp
as the last successful report and describe the latest report failure in text,
including when no report has yet succeeded; keep the existing standalone,
status-dot, and reporting-interval details.

Review comments at @README.md:
- Line 26: Update the README guidance about turning off battery optimization to
clarify that it may reduce delays but does not guarantee reports every 15
minutes; reports may still arrive late because WorkManager can wait for network
access or defer periodic work. Apply the same qualification to the matching
setup and site text without changing unrelated content.
