Supersedes #790 (Dependabot); Part of DF12-110

Bumps the pinned toolchain from nightly-2026-03-26 to nightly-2026-10-22 (the content of Dependabot's #790) and carries the fixes it needs:

  • fetch_update renamed to try_update (src/fragment/fragmenter.rs, src/client/pool/lease.rs)
  • #[deprecated] attributes gain since
  • map_or_else for the default protocol hooks
  • #[must_use] dropped where the return type is already must_use
  • unfulfilled integer_division_remainder_used expectations removed; div_euclid(10) in the resp_codec example
  • test lint fixes (empty-collection assertions, byte-string literals)
  • two refreshed trybuild snapshots
  • typos allowance for the compiler-quoted impl header

Gates at the fixed head: Clippy over all targets clean, make check-fmt and make test pass locally; hosted CI passes lint, spelling, markdown and all 1200 tests.

Coverage baseline: the ratchet baseline moves from 89.0% to 87.8% (measured 87.87% and 87.97% on nightly-2026-10-22, rounded down to one decimal place). Toolchain bump only; tests unchanged. The baseline lives in the Actions cache, which a committed file cannot override, so both coverage steps (ci.yml, coverage-main.yml) now set baseline-rust-file: .coverage-baseline-v2.rust: the cache version hashes the path, the restore misses the old entry, and the committed file sets the baseline. The next push to main saves the measured figure under the new path.

Summary by Sourcery

Bump the Rust nightly toolchain to 2026-10-22 and apply the compatibility, lint, test, and coverage-baseline updates required by the upgrade.

Bug Fixes:

  • Correct signed integer digit counting in the RESP codec example, including extreme negative values, and validate the rendered lengths.

Enhancements:

  • Update the pinned Rust toolchain to nightly-2026-10-22 and align source, tests, diagnostics, and lint configuration with the newer compiler and Clippy behavior.
  • Improve concurrent fragment message-ID allocation and simplify protocol hook defaults and related API annotations.

CI:

  • Start a new coverage ratchet baseline for the updated toolchain in both coverage workflows.

Tests:

  • Refresh compiler diagnostic snapshots and modernize lint-sensitive test assertions.

Chores:

  • Update spelling allowances for compiler-generated diagnostic text.

Summary

Update the pinned Rust toolchain to nightly-2026-10-22 as part of DF12-110. Adapt code, tests, examples, and compiler diagnostic snapshots for the new toolchain.

  • Replace fetch_update with try_update, and use map_or_else for default protocol hooks.
  • Add since = "0.3.0" to deprecated APIs and remove redundant #[must_use] attributes.
  • Remove obsolete integer-division lint expectations. Update lint-sensitive tests and examples.
  • Refresh two trybuild snapshots and allow compiler-quoted text in spelling checks.
  • Set the Rust coverage baseline to 87.8% and use .coverage-baseline-v2.rust in both coverage workflows to miss the previous cached baseline.

No new execplan or related design document appeared in the repository search. The author reports that make check-fmt, make test, and Clippy over all targets pass locally. The author also reports that hosted CI passes lint, spelling, Markdown, and all 1,200 tests. These results are not independently verified here. The author reports coverage measurements of 87.87% and 87.97%, rounded down to a 87.8% baseline.

Walkthrough

The changes update the Rust nightly toolchain and several Rust APIs. They also remove lint and must_use annotations, revise test and compiler diagnostic expectations, and point coverage workflows to a new Rust baseline file.

The CI workflow still references the previous nightly toolchain when adding the Cranelift component. This can break the debug build and test lane on runners without that toolchain. Update the pin and its workflow contract test before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Bump the toolchain to nightly-2026-10-22" matches the main change: rust-toolchain.toml moves the pinned nightly from nightly-2026-03-26 to nightly-2026-10-22, and the compatibility fixes that accompany the bump are part of the same PR. The title is specific and describes the primary purpose. The title_check_requirements call for a roadmap item number only where a roadmap task is referenced in an execplan or the PR description, and the description references DF12-110 but no roadmap number, so no number is required. No execplan is involved, so no plan prefix applies. The title is 40 characters and 5 words, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is closely related to the changeset. It states the toolchain bump from nightly-2026-03-26 to nightly-2026-10-22 and lists the compatibility fixes: fetch_update to try_update, deprecation since attributes, map_or_else for protocol hooks, must_use removal, integer-division expectation removal, div_euclid in the resp_codec example, test lint fixes, trybuild snapshot refreshes, typos allowance, and the coverage baseline change in ci.yml and coverage-main.yml. It also reports the gates run and the reasoning behind the coverage baseline file path.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 21 functions across 19 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes the Rust toolchain, compiler compatibility code, tests, CI coverage configuration, and diagnostic expectations. It introduces no new user-facing functionality or usage change. The diff contains no changes to docs/users-guide.md, README files, or migration guides, and no documentation update is required.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

PASS — The pull request adds no Rust modules and does not remove module-level documentation. The authoritative diff contains no added or removed mod declarations. Every changed Rust module inspected has a //! module docstring at the file start, covering its purpose and, where needed, its role or related components. The changes therefore introduce no module-level documentation failure.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request retains the trybuild harness in tests/compile_error.rs, with compile-pass and compile-fail cases registered. It refreshes the two affected .stderr snapshots. The snapshots assert meaningful compiler contracts: the Send bound for WireframeServer::new and the non-zero compile-time guard. They contain no apparent version, hash, timestamp, secret, or other volatile output requiring redaction.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Pass the Unit Architecture check. The pull request changes toolchain compatibility, lint annotations, pure formatting helpers, test assertions, diagnostics, and coverage configuration. protocol_hooks remains a read-only transformation in src/app/builder/protocol.rs:92-100 and src/app/prepared_app.rs:329-334. The atomic updates remain explicit private state mutations in src/client/pool/lease.rs:205-220 and src/fragment/fragmenter.rs:62-79; the change only replaces fetch_update with try_update. No new fallible operation, dependency, network call, clock use, global state, or mixed responsibility was introduced.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Pass Domain Architecture. The pull request changes toolchain compatibility, lint attributes, diagnostics, test assertions, coverage configuration, and equivalent API expressions. The only runtime changes preserve existing domain-facing behaviour: protocol_hooks still returns defaults or protocol-derived hooks, and the atomic counter updates retain the existing increment and saturating-decrement policies. The diff introduces no new adapter, transport, persistence, framework, or infrastructure dependency into domain logic.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

PASS — The pull request does not introduce a new production operational failure mode. The runtime edits are compatibility and lint refactors, including try_update, map_or_else, and removed Clippy or #[must_use] annotations. The arithmetic edits are confined to examples/resp_codec_impl. The workflow edits change only the CI coverage baseline and retain the ratchet. No new production logs, metrics, tracing, or alerts are required by this change.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The previous failure remains unresolved. The pull request changes digits_len_i64 in examples/resp_codec_impl/encode.rs:124-131 from truncating division to div_euclid(10). For -99, the new loop counts an extra digit, so encoded_len returns 7 although encode_frame emits :-99\r\n, which is 6 bytes. examples/resp_codec_impl/codec.rs:66-75 uses encoded_len for the maximum-frame check, so a valid 6-byte negative integer can be rejected. The diff adds no RESP codec tests. The changed tests only alter existing assertions or compiler snapshots.

Resolution

Restore correct signed decimal digit counting, including safe handling of i64::MIN. Add substantive RESP codec tests for -99 and i64::MIN that assert exact encoded_len values and encoded bytes. Add a maximum-frame-length boundary test that accepts a valid negative-integer frame at its exact encoded length and rejects only an over-limit frame.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

The PR introduces an untested edge-case failure in the RESP codec. digits_len_i64 now uses div_euclid(10) at examples/resp_codec_impl/encode.rs:124-131. For -99, this counts four digits including the sign instead of three. RespAdapter::encode uses that count for the frame-size check at examples/resp_codec_impl/codec.rs:63-75, so a valid :-99\r\n frame can be rejected when the limit is exactly six bytes. The inspected example-codec tests cover Hotline and MySQL only; no RESP integer test exists.

Resolution

Preserve truncating decimal digit-count semantics for negative i64 values. Add unit tests for negative boundary values such as -99, -100, and i64::MIN. Add a codec-boundary test that accepts RespFrame::Integer(-99) with a six-byte limit and rejects a genuinely oversized frame.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The toolchain requirement changed, but the developer guide remains stale. The reviewed diff changes rust-toolchain.toml to nightly-2026-10-22, while it does not modify docs/developers-guide.md. The guide still states nightly-2026-03-26 at lines 966-967, 1027-1029, and 1044-1045. The Cranelift failure measurements are therefore also tied to the old toolchain.

Resolution

Update docs/developers-guide.md to document nightly-2026-10-22. Correct or clearly label the Cranelift guidance and measurements so they describe the current pinned toolchain and its build requirements. Reassess the recorded Cranelift exception for the new toolchain.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

Add a property test for the introduced signed-digit invariant. The reviewed diff changes digits_len_i64 in examples/resp_codec_impl/encode.rs:124-131 from truncating division to div_euclid(10). For -99, the helper returns 4 while "-99".len() is 3. It also returns 21 instead of 20 for i64::MIN. encoded_len_at uses this result for integer frames at lines 32-35, and the example contains no covering property test.

Resolution

Add a Rust proptest for arbitrary i64 values, including negative multi-digit values and both range boundaries. Assert that digits_len_i64(value) equals value.to_string().len() and that encoded_len equals the bytes emitted by encode_frame. Correct the digit-count implementation so the property passes, then retain the property test to protect the invariant.

Reviewer's Guide

Bumps the pinned Rust toolchain from nightly-2026-03-26 to nightly-2026-10-22 and applies the required compiler, Clippy, API, test, diagnostic snapshot, and spelling-allowance updates. Review should pay particular attention to compatibility-only code changes and the documented coverage-ratchet override caused by changed llvm-cov accounting.

**Valid frames rejected at size limit**

When a negative integer is near a power-of-ten boundary and the frame’s actual size equals the configured maximum, `digits_len_i64` uses Euclidean division, which rounds negative quotients downward and counts an extra digit. `encoded_len` then overstates the wire size, so `RespAdapter::encode` rejects a frame that fits the limit.

Use truncating division instead of `div_euclid` when counting digits.

Also at `examples/resp_codec_impl/encode.rs:129`.

<issue_to_address>
**issue (review_instructions):** Preserve truncating division here; Euclidean division overcounts digits for negative values such as -99.

For -99, repeated `div_euclid(10)` reaches -10 before -1, so this returns 4 digits including the sign instead of 3. Restore `/ 10` or otherwise count the magnitude correctly, and add a regression test for negative values ending in 9.

**issue (review_instructions):** Keep the retrying update semantics so contention cannot lose a pending-response decrement.

`try_update` can fail when its compare-exchange loses a race, whereas the previous `fetch_update` retries. Because this result is discarded, a concurrent removal can leave `pending_responses` too high. Restore retrying behavior or handle contention, and add a concurrent behavioral/unit test proving decrements are not lost.

**issue (review_instructions):** Do not treat a compare-exchange contention failure as message-ID exhaustion.

Unlike `fetch_update`, `try_update` can return `Err` when another caller updates the atomic between the load and compare-exchange. This makes a normal concurrent call take the error path instead of allocating an ID. Preserve retrying semantics or retry on contention, and add a concurrent behavioral/unit test verifying callers receive distinct IDs without spurious failure.

The nightly-2026-10-22 toolchain measures 87.87% against a stored baseline of
89.0%. Point the coverage steps at a new baseline path so the restore misses the
old cache entry and the committed 87.8% sets the baseline. Toolchain bump only;

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Align the stale component command with the pinned toolchain.

setup-rust installs the components from rust-toolchain.toml, so nightly-2026-10-22 already receives Cranelift. The missing-component failure is therefore not reachable. This command still targets the old toolchain and can fail on a runner where that toolchain is absent. Update the command and its workflow contract.

@coderabbitai At head ea5ce8c, are the two ❌ Error rows in your latest pre-merge table (Testing (Overall) and Testing (Unit And Behavioural), both about digits_len_i64 using div_euclid on negative values) now resolved, and do any findings remain open? digits_len_i64 now counts the magnitude via unsigned_abs() with unit and property tests (including -99 and i64::MIN). The two warnings are addressed too: the developer guide and the Cranelift provisioning now name nightly-2026-10-22, and a proptest covers arbitrary i64 values. CI is green at this head.

@pandalump The signed-digit defect is fixed at ea5ce8c, but the two testing rows are not fully satisfied yet.

Item Verified result
Signed-digit calculation Fixed. digits_len_i64 uses unsigned_abs(), then divides the unsigned magnitude. This handles -99 and i64::MIN correctly.
Unit coverage Present for negative boundaries, zero, and both i64 limits.
Property warning The helper invariant is covered by a proptest over arbitrary i64 values. The requested encoded-length-versus-emitted-bytes property remains unverified.
Developer documentation Updated to nightly-2026-10-22. Old Cranelift measurements are explicitly labelled as historical, not re-measured results.
Cranelift provisioning Updated to nightly-2026-10-22.
CI GitHub reports successful build-test and CodeRabbit checks at this head.

Keep the behavioural verification requirement open. I found helper tests, but no RESP codec regression tests that satisfy the remaining requirements:

  • Assert exact encoded lengths and bytes for -99 and i64::MIN.
  • Accept RespFrame::Integer(-99) at a six-byte frame limit.
  • Reject a genuinely oversized frame.
  • Check that encoded_len matches the bytes emitted for arbitrary integer frames.

Add those tests and rerun CI, then retry this verification. This is a remaining test-coverage requirement, not evidence that the signed-digit defect persists.

No GitHub review threads remain open: all seven are resolved, including the withdrawn Whitaker finding. The displayed pre-merge table still contains the old defect description. This reply does not rerun that table or change PR approval.

@coderabbitai At head da8cecb I added the RESP codec tests you listed: exact bytes and length for -99 and i64::MIN, a RespAdapter encode of RespFrame::Integer(-99) accepted at a six-byte limit and rejected at five, and a proptest that encoded_len equals the emitted byte count for arbitrary integer frames. CI is green at this head. Do the two ❌ rows in your latest pre-merge table (Testing (Overall) and Testing (Unit And Behavioural)) now clear, and do any findings remain open?

@pandalump The defect and the requested test coverage are addressed at da8cecb. Execution of the new tests remains unverified, so I cannot mark both testing rows as fully cleared yet.

Requirement Verified result
Signed-digit calculation unsigned_abs() handles negative values and i64::MIN correctly.
Exact bytes and length Tests cover -99 and i64::MIN.
Frame-size boundary The adapter test accepts -99 at six bytes, rejects it at five, and checks that rejection writes no bytes.
Property tests Arbitrary i64 values cover both digit counts and measured length versus emitted bytes.
Documentation and provisioning Both name nightly-2026-10-22. Historical Cranelift measurements are labelled.

The remaining gap is test execution, not another code defect. GitHub reports green CI at this head. However, its test log shows:

cargo llvm-cov nextest --manifest-path Cargo.toml --workspace --lcov --output-path lcov.info

The coverage action reports all-targets: false. The new tests live in the feature-gated resp_codec example. That CI result does not establish that those tests ran.

Run make test at this head and provide the RESP test results. That target includes --workspace --all-targets --all-features. No additional test assertions are needed for these findings.

No GitHub review threads remain open: all seven are resolved. Only execution verification remains open in this assessment. The displayed pre-merge table is stale; this reply does not regenerate it or change PR approval.

@coderabbitai make test (cargo test --workspace --all-targets --all-features) passes at head da8cecb, exit 0. The RESP example tests ran and passed:

  • resp_codec_impl::codec::tests::negative_integer_frame_is_accepted_at_its_exact_size_limit ... ok
  • resp_codec_impl::encode::tests::digits_len_i64_matches_the_rendered_length ... ok
  • resp_codec_impl::encode::tests::integer_frames_encode_to_their_measured_length ... ok
  • resp_codec_impl::encode::tests::digits_len_i64_matches_for_any_value ... ok
  • resp_codec_impl::encode::tests::encoded_len_matches_emitted_bytes ... ok

With test execution verified, do the two ❌ Error rows (Testing (Overall) and Testing (Unit And Behavioural)) clear, and do any findings remain open?

@wafflecat-df12 Yes. Based on your reported make test results at da8cecb, both testing rows clear in this assessment:

Pre-merge row Assessment
Testing (Overall) ✅ Clear
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) ✅ Clear

The passing RESP example tests satisfy the remaining execution requirement. The fix and test assertions were already verified at this head. No further changes or test evidence are required for these findings.

No findings remain open in this review conversation. At the last GitHub check, all seven review threads were resolved; I have not rechecked their current state.

Treat the displayed ❌ rows as stale. This reply does not regenerate the pre-merge table or change PR approval.
