Thank you, @yelintong! A shared popover is a good idea, but as it stands this adds a sixth copy of "panel + header + X" next to the colour picker, style picker, variable picker, prototype editor and comment popovers, which keep their own. So I'm holding it for the maintainer. To make it the one shared component:

The panel's own frame, header and X go; the shared popover's chrome (from storytold#789) takes their place around the same preview and legend: the layer's title with the X that closes it, Escape, and a press outside — with the Fill section's button held out through Hold, so that button still toggles the panel shut (the press-closes/release-reopens bug the review caught stays fixed, now by the widget's own closing). The opening anchor is the button's top on the Design panel's edge, and the panel stays there while the panel scrolls. The preview's hatch cache (by document revision and rect) is untouched.
|
Thank you, @yelintong. The stack (#789 → #822 → #823 → #803) is in good shape now:
Two things are needed before it can land:
Remaining fixes once that's settled:
|
The chrome detached panels share, in one place: a 240 pt card with a 40 pt header —
the title 16 in from its left edge, a 24 pt X 8 in from its right — a hairline under
the header and the theme's popup shadow, around one slot:
let mut p = Popover::new("my_popover", tr("Title"));
let closed = p.show(ctx, Open::Anchor(pos), Hold::default(), |ui| { /* the slot */ });
The measurements are the ones the colour picker's header already used, which this widget
now draws; the card is as wide as the picker was. The shadow is the theme's
(`visuals.popup_shadow`), so the dark theme gets its own.
Closing is the widget's: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in the rects the
caller holds out (`Hold { rects, escape }`: the button that opened it, a popover it opened
in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it
and the release opening it again (the bug the fill-rule panel has). Press-and-release
tests pin all of it.
It opens against an anchor (its right edge on the anchor, top on it, lifted when that
would run off the screen's bottom) or at a point; the header drags it.
Six headless tests: the header's geometry, the opening rule, the lift, the drag, the X,
Escape, and the press-and-release of a press on the opener (open) and elsewhere (closed).
`Popover` is the one card detached panels draw on: a header 40 points high with the title 16 in from its left edge and a 24-point X 8 in from its right, a hairline under it, the theme's popup shadow, and one slot. Its measurements are our own — the colour picker's header, which it now uses — not another product's. The colour picker and the style picker move onto it in this commit; each keeps only its own body. The style picker keeps its dark surface through `Surface::Menu`, and its tools row (view, detach, create) now starts the slot, under the shared title. Closing is the widget's now: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in the rects the caller holds out (the button that opened it, a popover it opened in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it and the release opening it again (the bug storytold#730 has). The colour picker keeps its old habit of staying open while the panel beside it is used. Tests: press-and-release for the X, for a press on the opener (open) and for a press elsewhere (closed), plus Escape, the opening rule, the lift and the drag.
Clicking a colour swatch opens the picker; clicking the same one again closes it (another swatch switches the picker to its paint). The page background, the text range, the paint rows, the effect rows and the selection colours all toggle. The pickers' review fixes on top: the colour picker keeps its popover only while it is open (a body that closed it left a stale dragged place for the next picker to inherit); the style picker resets its retained popover when a new picker opens and on its early-close paths; and Escape belongs to the nested colour picker first, so closing it doesn't take the style picker down with it. Opening the style picker, the layout settings or the stroke settings closes the colour picker instead of leaving it lingering beside them.

Remove .close_on_outside(false), because it turns off outside-press closing for the colour picker.
Popover::show computes outside as self.outside && …. With .close_on_outside(false), outside is always false. As a result:
- A press outside the picker never closes it.
- The held rects built at Lines 472-474 (
panel,picker_button) have no effect. - The comment at Lines 469-471 says that the shared widget closes the picker on a press outside it. That description is wrong.
The PR objectives list outside-press closing with excluded rects as a goal of this stack. In the current code, a press on the toolbar, the left panel, or an empty canvas does not close the picker when the target does not depend on the selection (PageBackground, Variable, Style, PluginField).
The test a_press_on_the_canvas_closes_the_colour_picker in panel_remove_tests.rs passes for a different reason. The canvas press at (320, 300) deselects the rectangle. show then sees a Paint target whose ids no longer match the selection and closes the picker through the stale check. The test does not exercise the popover's outside-press path.
Keep the default outside-press closing. The held right panel already protects presses on the Design panel rows.

Let shortcuts own Escape when showing the colour picker.
shortcuts::handle runs before colorpicker::show, so the claimed pre-shortcuts deselection sequence does not occur.
However, shortcuts::handle returns early while a text field has focus. Hold { escape: false } then lets Popover::show consume Escape and report the picker as closed. Set escape: true so the popover does not handle Escape.

On where the values come from: they are from a design file we keep locally — FigCraft's own panel design, drawn for this work — and the widget was built to it. Nothing came from another product's web styles, UI kits or inspected UI.
On top of your list, two things this branch was still missing are fixed:
Tests: |
The picker draws on the shared popover, so it closes the way the popover does: the X, Escape, and a press outside it. - A press on the canvas closes it; presses in the panel beside it keep it, since a swatch, a style chip or a field there switches the colour it edits. - The control that opened it is held out of that closing and its rect is refreshed every frame, so pressing the same swatch again reaches its own toggle — after the panel scrolls too (the bug storytold#730 had, in the picker's hands). - Escape closes it before the binding deselects the layer, and not while one of its own dropdowns is open. Tests: a press on the canvas closes it, the same swatch closes it again (panel_remove_tests).

Thanks @yelintong, the shared popover now meets the owner's conditions and the CSS wording is gone. One question is left for the owner: where the panel measurements come from. You said FigCraft's own locally kept design file; the owner will confirm. |
# Conflicts: # crates/ui-egui/src/colorpicker.rs # crates/ui-egui/src/colorpicker_selection_tests.rs # crates/ui-egui/src/style_picker.rs
main moved the colour picker into `widgets/colorpicker.rs` and gave it a fixed area id (storytold#976: `window_id()`), which the style picker looks up to tell a press inside the picker from one outside. This merge keeps that id as the picker's own area: the popover takes it as-is (`Popover::with_id`), so the lookup and the storytold#237 regression test keep working — the test now finds the picker by the id instead of by its z-order. The rest is the popover arriving on top of current main: - the colour picker's `egui::Window` is the shared card: its 40 pt header — title 16 in, X 8 in from the right — is the popover's, and its body is unchanged, eyedropper included; - the style picker's own area, frame and border are the same card on the dark surface; its title moved into the header, its tools row stays; - presses in the Design panel and on the control that opened the picker are held out of the closing, so that control's own click toggles the picker; - while the eyedropper samples (still picking, or a colour just picked) a press on the canvas is the pick, so it does not close the picker it picks for. `right.rs` was split by main: its four swatch call sites are now in `panels/right.rs` (page background), `panels/right/paints.rs` (a text range's fill, a paint row) and `panels/right/effects.rs` (an effect's colour). egui 0.37 deprecates `Id::new` for `Id::unique`, which the new module uses. `cargo test -p figcraft-ui-egui`: 824 + 8 + 1 pass; fmt and clippy clean.

Merged, thank you @yelintong! With this, pickers open in a generic popover with a 40-high header you can drag. The merge with main re-applied it onto the split colour picker. It landed with your commits as they were. |
The chrome detached panels share, in one place, instead of each panel growing its own frame.
What lands
crates/ui-egui/src/popover.rs: a 240-point card with a 40-point header — the title 16 in from its left edge, a 24-point X 8 in from its right — a hairline under the header and the theme's popup shadow, around one slot:visuals.popup_shadow), so the dark theme gets its own. Nothing is taken from another product's interface, styles or UI kits.Hold { rects, escape }: the button that opened it, a popover it opened in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it and the release opening it again (the bug M4: fill rules from the Fill section — the panel (UI half) #730 has). The fill-rule panel (#730) is the first user: it rebases onto this and keeps only its preview in the slot. Nothing else on

egui feathers a shadow linearly rather than blurring it like CSS; the widget draws the theme's shadow as-is.
