Depends on #789 and #822 (feat/popover, then feat/colour-picker). Merge them in that order; this branch is based on #822, so their commits show in this PR's list too — this PR's own work is the last commit (ef532be).

What it adds

The stroke row's dots button opens the stroke's advanced settings in the shared popover, under a Basic / Brush switch.

  • Basic: the style (with the dash and gap it brings), the width profile, the join with its miter angle, then the start and end caps of open paths.
  • Brush: the brush picker and the fields the brush itself has — spacing, scatter, size jitter and rotation jitter.

The width profile leaves the Stroke section's inline rows for the popover and shows on both tabs, so switching tabs never hides it; it keeps its shape preview and the flip of a custom profile.

A selection whose layers have different stroke settings reads "Mixed" in the style row, as the join and the end points already did, and the popover stays open.

Escape closes the popover and keeps the selection. In one of its fields Escape ends the edit first (the field marks the frame's Escape as spent), and the popover closes on the next press.

What's in it

  • right.rs — the popover body (style, width profile, join, caps, brush), the dots button, the Mixed label.
  • lib.rs — the stroke settings' popover state and its per-frame draw; shortcuts.rs — Escape.
  • popover.rs / a11y.rs / widgets.rs — the Escape rule and the shared setting row (SETTING_CONTROL).
  • locales/en.toml, locales/es.toml — "Basic".
  • stroke_settings_tests.rs, docs/ui-parity.md.

How to check

  1. Select a layer with a stroke, click the … right of the stroke weight: the popover opens on that button.
  2. Basic tab: Stroke style, Width profile, Join (and Miter angle for a miter join), Start/End point on an open path. Switch to Brush and back: the width profile is on both.
  3. Select two layers whose stroke weights differ: the style row reads "Mixed" and the popover stays open.
  4. Click into Dash, press Escape once (the edit ends, the popover stays), again (the popover closes, the selection stays).

📝 Walkthrough

The UI crate adds a reusable popover for color, style, and stroke controls. Picker controls use opener-based placement and toggling. Advanced stroke settings use Basic and Brush tabs with updated inspector spacing and Escape handling.

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5a559

The color picker now uses the shared popover, and pressing Escape closes it without clearing the selection. One smaller issue is still open: the stroke settings popover can stay open, and keep an outdated button region, after its stroke row stops being drawn. This is a contained interface glitch, not a data or stability risk, so the change can merge with that follow-up noted.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5a559

The shared popover design does not show an increase in access or authority. Remaining uncertainty concerns picker ownership and unfinished edits when changing documents or invalidating targets.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated fanout is shared editor interaction behavior across three feature callers. Popover itself stores presentation state and invokes caller-provided UI content; document and plugin mutations remain in existing feature paths. No expanded service or credential authority was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — SelectionColor rejects a mismatched document or selection. Layer-bound color-picker targets have selection-staleness checks before rendering. The PR preserves these controls and adds removal of associated popover state on stale-target dismissal.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Stale-target dismissal finalizes interactions only for SelectionColor, unlike normal closure. This omission is present in both base and head, so it is not retained as an introduced concern. Its recovery and interaction-grouping consequences were not fully resolved.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Close the stroke settings popover when the stroke row is no longer drawn.

show_stroke_settings closes the popover only when the selection is empty. The stroke row in paints sets stroke_settings_button only when it draws the weight row, which requires !fills && !empty. The popover stays open in these cases:

  • The user removes the last stroke with the row's minus button.
  • The user selects a layer without strokes.
  • The user selects layers with mixed stroke lists.
  • The user switches the right panel to Prototype or Dev Mode.
  • The user hides the UI.

In each case the Basic tab still writes dashes, strokeJoin and caps to the current selection, and those layers have no stroke row. stroke_settings_button also keeps the last rect that was drawn. A press on that stale rect does not close the popover.

The color picker and the style picker already close when their context becomes stale. Use the same rule here: take the button rect on each frame. If the row did not set it in this frame, close the popover. The right panel draws before show_stroke_settings in FigApp::frame, so a visible row always sets the rect in time.

This is a partial comment, not an approval. I haven't built or run it (no cargo here), the branch is conflicting with main (merge state DIRTY), and hosted checks on this head show only CodeRabbit, so there is no test result.

What I read. The last commit (ef532be, the PR's own work, +328/-100 over 10 files): the stroke-settings popover state in lib.rs, the dots button and stroke_settings_body changes in right.rs (the part I could see), a11y.rs, popover.rs, shortcuts.rs, the new stroke_settings_tests.rs and the locale rows. I did not read the colour-picker and popover commits underneath it, nor the second half of stroke_settings_body (tabs, caps, join).

What I checked, and it holds.

  • Escape order. popover.rs closes only when no field is focused and no field spent this frame's Escape (a11y::spend_escape keyed on cumulative_frame_nr); shortcuts.rs closes the popover before the binding that deselects. The new test drives two Escape presses (first ends the field edit, second closes the popover).
  • Popover lifetime. The dots button toggles stroke_settings, freezes the anchor at the opening and closes the colour picker when it opens, so the two popovers do not stack. A test covers a mixed selection keeping the popover open.
  • Row layout. The sublabels pairs become one setting_row each, with the same field ids and the same app.field(...) write-back, so the stored values are untouched; the width-profile row now sits in the popover for both tabs, as the description says.

Points for the author and maintainers.

  • Stack and conflicts. This is based on #822, which is based on #789; all three target main, so GitHub lists five commits, and #822 and this one are DIRTY. The three need to land in order and be rebased; until #789 and #822 are merged I cannot say what the diff is against. Retargeting this one at feat/colour-picker would show only its own commit.
  • Locales. Basic and the new strings are added to en.toml and es.toml only; the other 17 catalogues (de, fr, ja and so on) are not touched. If a coverage test or fallback to English covers that, fine; please say which.
  • Escape rule. !field_focused(ctx) also blocks closing while a field has focus but is not being edited; with the spent-frame marker that looks redundant, and it could leave Escape needing a click elsewhere first. Worth one test for a focused-not-editing field.

Validation request (head ef532bec0534f7c14edc7b1cb117738a948b6df6, after #789 and #822 land and a rebase):

  • os: linux, windows and macos
  • commands: cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p figcraft-ui-egui stroke_settings popover; open the popover on a dashed, joined, brushed stroke and press Escape twice
  • expected: all pass; the first Escape ends the field edit, the second closes the popover and keeps the selection
  • holds: the earlier two commits and half of the popover body not reviewed by me; DIRTY; no hosted test result

The chrome detached panels share, in one place: a 240 pt card with a 40 pt header —
the title 16 in from its left edge, a 24 pt X 8 in from its right — a hairline under
the header and the theme's popup shadow, around one slot:

    let mut p = Popover::new("my_popover", tr("Title"));
    let closed = p.show(ctx, Open::Anchor(pos), Hold::default(), |ui| { /* the slot */ });

The measurements are the ones the colour picker's header already used, which this widget
now draws; the card is as wide as the picker was. The shadow is the theme's
(`visuals.popup_shadow`), so the dark theme gets its own.

Closing is the widget's: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in the rects the
caller holds out (`Hold { rects, escape }`: the button that opened it, a popover it opened
in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it
and the release opening it again (the bug the fill-rule panel has). Press-and-release
tests pin all of it.

It opens against an anchor (its right edge on the anchor, top on it, lifted when that
would run off the screen's bottom) or at a point; the header drags it.

Six headless tests: the header's geometry, the opening rule, the lift, the drag, the X,
Escape, and the press-and-release of a press on the opener (open) and elsewhere (closed).
`Popover` is the one card detached panels draw on: a header 40 points high
with the title 16 in from its left edge and a 24-point X 8 in from its right,
a hairline under it, the theme's popup shadow, and one slot. Its measurements
are our own — the colour picker's header, which it now uses — not another
product's.

The colour picker and the style picker move onto it in this commit; each keeps
only its own body. The style picker keeps its dark surface through
`Surface::Menu`, and its tools row (view, detach, create) now starts the slot,
under the shared title.

Closing is the widget's now: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in
the rects the caller holds out (the button that opened it, a popover it opened
in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press
closing it and the release opening it again (the bug storytold#730 has). The colour
picker keeps its old habit of staying open while the panel beside it is used.

Tests: press-and-release for the X, for a press on the opener (open) and for a
press elsewhere (closed), plus Escape, the opening rule, the lift and the drag.
Clicking a colour swatch opens the picker; clicking the same one again closes
it (another swatch switches the picker to its paint). The page background, the
text range, the paint rows, the effect rows and the selection colours all
toggle.

The pickers' review fixes on top: the colour picker keeps its popover only
while it is open (a body that closed it left a stale dragged place for the next
picker to inherit); the style picker resets its retained popover when a new
picker opens and on its early-close paths; and Escape belongs to the nested
colour picker first, so closing it doesn't take the style picker down with it.

Opening the style picker, the layout settings or the stroke settings closes the
colour picker instead of leaving it lingering beside them.
@yelintong
yelintong force-pushed the feat/stroke-settings branch from ef532be to e7f78be Compare October 20, 2026 04:06
The picker draws on the shared popover, so it closes the way the popover does: the X,
Escape, and a press outside it.

- A press on the canvas closes it; presses in the panel beside it keep it, since a
swatch, a style chip or a field there switches the colour it edits.
- The control that opened it is held out of that closing and its rect is refreshed every
frame, so pressing the same swatch again reaches its own toggle — after the panel
scrolls too (the bug storytold#730 had, in the picker's hands).
- Escape closes it before the binding deselects the layer, and not while one of its own
  dropdowns is open.

Tests: a press on the canvas closes it, the same swatch closes it again (panel_remove_tests).
block_inset shrank the row by inset_x on both sides, so the effect and layout-grid rows'
minus button sat 8 pt left of the Fill and Stroke rows' (the two are 8 in from the left,
24 pt icons). The inset moves the left edge only now; a test holds every Remove button of
a panel to one x.

The icon spacing tests lost their debug print and their hard-coded window width (the
content rect's width is asked for instead).
…heir dropdowns

A selection that no longer has a stroke leaves the settings nothing to set, so the popover
closes (the button with it) instead of showing rows for a stroke that is gone.

Escape with one of the popover's dropdowns open closed the settings too: the shortcut runs
before the binding, and only egui's popup knows the dropdown wants that Escape. The shortcut
now lets it pass (Popup::is_any_open), so Escape closes the dropdown first and the settings
on the next press.

Thanks @yelintong! Moving the stroke's advanced settings into a popover is a design change that needs the owner's sign-off, and the width profile still moves out of the Stroke section, which the owner asked to keep. Holding it for them.

A status update: this stays open, and here's what would let it land. This follows #789. The stroke's width profile should stay in the Stroke section, as in the reference tool, rather than move into the popover.
