Depends on #789 (feat/popover, the shared popover). Merge that first. This branch is based on it, so #789's commits show in this PR's list too — this PR's own work is the last commit (ce2ce75).

What it adds

The colour picker's top sits on the control that opened it, at every opener: a paint's swatch, a text range's mixed row, a variable's swatch, an effect's colour, the page background, and the + that adds a paint. Before, it kept the height of whichever swatch opened it last. The style picker's EditPaint has no swatch to sit on (the click came from the editor's list), so it opens at the usual height and clears the remembered one.

The panel's icon rhythm: a row that opens with a 24-point icon insets it 8 from the panel's edge (the effect and layout-grid rows), an icon keeps 8 to the next control, and two icons keep 4. icon_pair sets the row's spacing before the first of the pair — the gap after a widget is fixed when it is laid out — instead of adding negative space to the cursor.

What's in it

  • colorpicker.rs, style_picker.rs, variables_panel.rs, plugins_ui.rs — the picker opens on the control's top (picker_y), never on a stale one.
  • lib.rs — open_picker / toggle_picker take that top; the picker's own target changes leave it alone.
  • right.rs — every opener in the Design panel (page background, paint rows, text range, effect colour), and the icon rhythm of the paint, effect and grid rows.
  • widgets.rs — icon_pair.
  • colorpicker_selection_tests.rs, icon_spacing_tests.rs, docs/ui-parity.md.

How to check

  1. Click a paint's swatch, then an effect's colour, then a variable's swatch, then the page background's: each picker opens with its top on the control you just clicked, not at the previous swatch's height.
  2. Click the same swatch twice: the picker closes.
  3. Right panel: the eye and the − sit 4 apart, an icon keeps 8 to the field beside it, and the effect and grid rows' leading icon sits 8 from the panel's edge.

📝 Walkthrough

The UI adds a shared popover for color and style pickers. Picker entry points provide optional vertical anchors and toggle behavior. Right-panel rows use updated insets and paired icon controls. Tests cover popover behavior, picker placement, dismissal, toggling, and icon spacing.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cac01

Colour pickers now open next to the control that opened them, and right-panel icons use the new spacing. Some edges remain. Clicking another control in the style editor closes the colour picker that is editing that style. A dragged picker position can carry over after the picker is closed by removing a paint or effect or by applying a style. One spacing test is looser than the specified 8-point rule. These problems are small, and the PR is mergeable with follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cac01

The change primarily affects picker placement and dismissal. No new security exposure was demonstrated, but picker ownership during certain document-switch transitions remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected changed APIs affect presentation state within the running application. Their downstream mutation paths remain the existing document session and identified plugin fields; no additional tenant, service, credential, or infrastructure authority was established by these changes.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Plugin field targets retain plugin and control identifiers. Field access checks the matching form or named plugin panel, and updates modify that matching form or use the existing plugin.event command. The inspected shared-popover adoption does not replace these ownership checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The centralized close path finishes pending edits and clears the active target, retained popover, opener rectangle, and anchor. Same-target toggling uses this path, providing consistent normal cleanup despite the direct-reset exceptions described above.

Reset the popover when opening a new picker target.

The early-return cleanup does not cover a direct switch from one picker target to another. open_picker changes the target and picker_y, but it keeps the existing Popover. A dragged Place::At can override the new opener position.

Tighten the leading-icon inset assertion.

This assertion accepts an inset of 15 points, although the required inset is 8 points and the test comment allows about one point for border and rounding. A misplaced icon can therefore pass the test. Account for the panel border in the expected value, then assert with a narrow tolerance.

This is a partial comment, not an approval. I haven't built or run it (no cargo here), the branch is conflicting with main (merge state DIRTY), and hosted checks on this head show only CodeRabbit, so there is no test result.

What I read. The last commit (ce2ce75, the PR's own work, +190/-40): lib.rs (open_picker, toggle_picker, picker_y), the colorpicker.rs placement change, every opener in right.rs, style_picker.rs, variables_panel.rs, plugins_ui.rs (header only), widgets::icon_pair, and the test files' names. I did not read the three commits underneath (#789's popover) or the two new test files in full.

What I checked, and it holds.

  • Every opener passes a top. The paint + (header_top + 8.0), a paint swatch, the text range's "Mixed" row (mixed.rect.min.y), a variable's swatch (sw.min.y), and the style picker's EditPaint, which passes None on purpose. close clears picker_y, so a stale height cannot survive a close and reopen.
  • No behaviour change to the data. The row_inset/block_inset split keeps the old PAD default, so existing rows lay out as before; the remaining changes are the - 56 to - 52 width fix for the 4-point icon gap and the paint-row eye and remove becoming an icon_pair, with the same two commands run on click.
  • icon_pair. It sets item_spacing.x to 4 before the first widget and restores the whole item_spacing after the second, so a panic or early return inside the closures is the only way to leak the narrow spacing; none of the call sites returns early.

Points for the author and maintainers.

  • Off-screen anchor. picker_y is a screen y taken when the swatch was clicked; for a swatch near the bottom of a scrolled panel, the picker's top is there too. I did not see whether Open::Anchor clamps it to the screen (that is in #789), so it is worth a test with the panel scrolled to the end.
  • Stack and conflicts. This is based on #789 and is DIRTY; #823 sits on top of it. Please land #789, rebase this one, and re-run before anyone reviews #823 for merge.
  • Magic numbers. 140.0 (the usual height) and - 8.0 appear in two places in colorpicker.rs; a named constant would keep them in step.

Validation request (head ce2ce7593b68bba8574ba09e0fc7652ad5ba791b, after #789 lands and a rebase):

  • os: linux, windows and macos
  • commands: cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p figcraft-ui-egui colorpicker icon_spacing popover; open the picker from a paint, an effect, a variable and the page background, then from a swatch near the bottom of a scrolled panel
  • expected: all pass; the picker's top lines up with the control that opened it, and stays on screen
  • holds: #789's commits and the test files not read in full by me; DIRTY; no hosted test result

The chrome detached panels share, in one place: a 240 pt card with a 40 pt header —
the title 16 in from its left edge, a 24 pt X 8 in from its right — a hairline under
the header and the theme's popup shadow, around one slot:

    let mut p = Popover::new("my_popover", tr("Title"));
    let closed = p.show(ctx, Open::Anchor(pos), Hold::default(), |ui| { /* the slot */ });

The measurements are the ones the colour picker's header already used, which this widget
now draws; the card is as wide as the picker was. The shadow is the theme's
(`visuals.popup_shadow`), so the dark theme gets its own.

Closing is the widget's: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in the rects the
caller holds out (`Hold { rects, escape }`: the button that opened it, a popover it opened
in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it
and the release opening it again (the bug the fill-rule panel has). Press-and-release
tests pin all of it.

It opens against an anchor (its right edge on the anchor, top on it, lifted when that
would run off the screen's bottom) or at a point; the header drags it.

Six headless tests: the header's geometry, the opening rule, the lift, the drag, the X,
Escape, and the press-and-release of a press on the opener (open) and elsewhere (closed).
`Popover` is the one card detached panels draw on: a header 40 points high
with the title 16 in from its left edge and a 24-point X 8 in from its right,
a hairline under it, the theme's popup shadow, and one slot. Its measurements
are our own — the colour picker's header, which it now uses — not another
product's.

The colour picker and the style picker move onto it in this commit; each keeps
only its own body. The style picker keeps its dark surface through
`Surface::Menu`, and its tools row (view, detach, create) now starts the slot,
under the shared title.

Closing is the widget's now: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in
the rects the caller holds out (the button that opened it, a popover it opened
in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press
closing it and the release opening it again (the bug storytold#730 has). The colour
picker keeps its old habit of staying open while the panel beside it is used.

Tests: press-and-release for the X, for a press on the opener (open) and for a
press elsewhere (closed), plus Escape, the opening rule, the lift and the drag.
Clicking a colour swatch opens the picker; clicking the same one again closes
it (another swatch switches the picker to its paint). The page background, the
text range, the paint rows, the effect rows and the selection colours all
toggle.

The pickers' review fixes on top: the colour picker keeps its popover only
while it is open (a body that closed it left a stale dragged place for the next
picker to inherit); the style picker resets its retained popover when a new
picker opens and on its early-close paths; and Escape belongs to the nested
colour picker first, so closing it doesn't take the style picker down with it.

Opening the style picker, the layout settings or the stroke settings closes the
colour picker instead of leaving it lingering beside them.

Outside-press closing is turned off, so the hold rects never take effect.

Line 469 builds the popover with .close_on_outside(false). In Popover::show, the outside-press check is self.outside && .... That check is always false here, so hold.rects (panel and app.ui.picker_button) never changes the result. The comment at Lines 470-472 says the shared widget closes on "a press outside it". The code does not do that.

How this shows up:

  • If the target is PageBackground, Variable, Style or PluginField, a press on the canvas does not close the picker. Only the X and Escape close it.
  • picker_button is unused for closing. The swatch toggle works only because the swatch's own click calls toggle_picker.
  • a_press_on_the_canvas_closes_the_colour_picker in panel_remove_tests.rs (Lines 171-185) passes for a different reason. The canvas press deselects the rectangle, so the Paint target becomes stale (Line 445). The test does not exercise the popover's closing.

If outside-press closing is the intended behaviour, remove .close_on_outside(false). Also hold the other surfaces that edit the picker's target:

  • the style picker's area when the target is PickerTarget::Style;
  • the plugin window from field_window when the target is PluginField.

If the picker should stay open, delete the hold rects and the picker_button field. Then rewrite the comment and the test to describe the behaviour that actually happens.

Enable outside-press closing for the color picker by removing the
close_on_outside(false) configuration from the Popover construction. In the
picker popover flow, extend the existing held rectangles for PickerTarget::Style
and PickerTarget::PluginField using their style area and field_window surfaces,
while preserving the panel and picker_button holds.

The picker draws on the shared popover, so it closes the way the popover does: the X,
Escape, and a press outside it.

- A press on the canvas closes it; presses in the panel beside it keep it, since a
swatch, a style chip or a field there switches the colour it edits.
- The control that opened it is held out of that closing and its rect is refreshed every
frame, so pressing the same swatch again reaches its own toggle — after the panel
scrolls too (the bug storytold#730 had, in the picker's hands).
- Escape closes it before the binding deselects the layer, and not while one of its own
  dropdowns is open.

Tests: a press on the canvas closes it, the same swatch closes it again (panel_remove_tests).
block_inset shrank the row by inset_x on both sides, so the effect and layout-grid rows'
minus button sat 8 pt left of the Fill and Stroke rows' (the two are 8 in from the left,
24 pt icons). The inset moves the left edge only now; a test holds every Remove button of
a panel to one x.

The icon spacing tests lost their debug print and their hard-coded window width (the
content rect's width is asked for instead).

| 2026-10-18 | minor | The colour picker opens with its top on the control that opened it, at every opener (a paint's swatch, a text range's mixed row, a variable's swatch, an effect's colour, the page background), instead of keeping the height of whichever swatch opened it last. The panel's icon rhythm: a row that opens with a 24-point icon insets it 8 from the panel's edge (the effect and layout-grid rows), an icon keeps 8 to the next control, and two icons keep 4 |
| 2026-10-20 | minor | Readable disabled and selected text (#890): the dim text colour (disabled buttons, placeholders, hints) is at least 3:1 against panels, fields and selected rows in both themes (it was 2.1:1 in the light theme), a disabled button is grey with that text instead of fading to 40%, and selected text (renaming a page or layer, any text box) takes the theme's readable green on the highlight (1.4:1 in the dark theme before, now 4.2:1 or more); checked with the colour contrast helper (`theme::tests`). Numbers unchanged |
| 2026-10-20 | minor | Measuring while nudging (#894): with Alt held over another layer, the arrows nudge the selection (Shift: the big step) and the distances follow every nudge (Alt+arrows used to do nothing); while measuring, the selection's handles and size label hide and both layers keep their outlines (`measure_nudge_tests`). Fix the revision-history table row.

This row has four cells instead of the three declared by the table header, and it has no trailing pipe. Markdownlint reports MD055 and MD056. Move 609b (...) into the Summary cell or create a separate row, then add the trailing |.

Read the popover module, the colour picker and style picker rewiring, the panel row changes and the new tests (test job green at cac01bf, mergeable). The shared popover places itself against the anchor and clamps to the screen. The header drags it, and the X, Escape or an outside press closes it, with the opening button's rect held out so its own click toggles the picker shut. The picker, its popover, button rect and anchor are cleared together in colorpicker::close, and the style picker closes the colour picker when it opens, so neither lingers beside the other. The colour picker body is moved, not changed.

Thanks @yelintong! The owner's earlier fixes (block_inset, the debug print, the hard-coded 1440) are all done, thank you. It sits on #789's popover, which is waiting on the owner's answer about where the panel measurements come from, so this waits with it.

Content already landed with storytold#803 (its commit is in that branch); the tree keeps
main's newer widgets.rs (panel grid constants, setting_row) and the union doc.

A status update: this stays open, and here's what would let it land. This follows #789: once that lands, please update it onto main.
