Thank you, @yelintong! The direction matches the reference app's public docs: auto layout's extra settings (strokes in layout, canvas stacking, baseline alignment) live in one settings popover, and stroke has advanced settings. Your commits here reuse the shared widgets and have no outside design values, which is great. Since this is stacked on #789, it waits for that one, and the maintainer still has to sign off on moving the Design panel's inline settings into popovers. Fixes it needs either way:

🟡 Minor · Keep the stroke opener’s held rectangle current. · right.rs:1215-1225

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winKeep the stroke opener’s held rectangle current.
app.ui.stroke_settings_buttonis used both as the fixed popover anchor and as the held opener region. It is updated only while the popover is closed. After the Design panel scrolls, a press on the visible opener can miss the stale held rectangle, soPopover::showtreats it as an outside press. Keep the opening anchor separate from the current held rectangle.Suggested fix

Close the stroke popover only when every selected node has no stroke paints.
show_stroke_settings currently keeps the popover open for any non-empty selection. This lets its controls update strokeJoin and dashes on selections whose strokes paint lists are empty. Do not close it when any node lacks a stroke, because that also closes mixed selections. Close it only when all selected nodes have no stroke paints.

official egui 0.36.2 Sense::click focusable documentation
💡 Result:
In **egui 0.36.2**, `Sense::click()` senses clicks and hover **and makes the widget focusable**. The docs say to use `Sense::CLICK` instead if you want click sensing without focusability. The implementation confirms `click()` combines `CLICK | FOCUSABLE`. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/egui/latest/egui/struct.Sense.html?search=std%3A%3Avec&utm_source=openai))

Limit the Escape exception to an active field edit.
field_focused returns true for any focused non-canvas widget, including buttons. The popover controls use Sense::click(), which makes them focusable. A focused popover control can therefore prevent Escape from closing the popover even when no field edit is active. Check for an active field edit instead of general widget focus.

The chrome detached panels share, in one place: a 240 pt card with a 40 pt header —
the title 16 in from its left edge, a 24 pt X 8 in from its right — a hairline under
the header and the theme's popup shadow, around one slot:
let mut p = Popover::new("my_popover", tr("Title"));
let closed = p.show(ctx, Open::Anchor(pos), Hold::default(), |ui| { /* the slot */ });
The measurements are the ones the colour picker's header already used, which this widget
now draws; the card is as wide as the picker was. The shadow is the theme's
(`visuals.popup_shadow`), so the dark theme gets its own.
Closing is the widget's: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in the rects the
caller holds out (`Hold { rects, escape }`: the button that opened it, a popover it opened
in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it
and the release opening it again (the bug the fill-rule panel has). Press-and-release
tests pin all of it.
It opens against an anchor (its right edge on the anchor, top on it, lifted when that
would run off the screen's bottom) or at a point; the header drags it.
Six headless tests: the header's geometry, the opening rule, the lift, the drag, the X,
Escape, and the press-and-release of a press on the opener (open) and elsewhere (closed).
`Popover` is the one card detached panels draw on: a header 40 points high with the title 16 in from its left edge and a 24-point X 8 in from its right, a hairline under it, the theme's popup shadow, and one slot. Its measurements are our own — the colour picker's header, which it now uses — not another product's. The colour picker and the style picker move onto it in this commit; each keeps only its own body. The style picker keeps its dark surface through `Surface::Menu`, and its tools row (view, detach, create) now starts the slot, under the shared title. Closing is the widget's now: the X, Escape, and a press outside it — except in the rects the caller holds out (the button that opened it, a popover it opened in turn), so that button's own click can toggle it shut instead of the press closing it and the release opening it again (the bug storytold#730 has). The colour picker keeps its old habit of staying open while the panel beside it is used. Tests: press-and-release for the X, for a press on the opener (open) and for a press elsewhere (closed), plus Escape, the opening rule, the lift and the drag.
Clicking a colour swatch opens the picker; clicking the same one again closes it (another swatch switches the picker to its paint). The page background, the text range, the paint rows, the effect rows and the selection colours all toggle. The pickers' review fixes on top: the colour picker keeps its popover only while it is open (a body that closed it left a stale dragged place for the next picker to inherit); the style picker resets its retained popover when a new picker opens and on its early-close paths; and Escape belongs to the nested colour picker first, so closing it doesn't take the style picker down with it. Opening the style picker, the layout settings or the stroke settings closes the colour picker instead of leaving it lingering beside them.

The picker draws on the shared popover, so it closes the way the popover does: the X, Escape, and a press outside it. - A press on the canvas closes it; presses in the panel beside it keep it, since a swatch, a style chip or a field there switches the colour it edits. - The control that opened it is held out of that closing and its rect is refreshed every frame, so pressing the same swatch again reaches its own toggle — after the panel scrolls too (the bug storytold#730 had, in the picker's hands). - Escape closes it before the binding deselects the layer, and not while one of its own dropdowns is open. Tests: a press on the canvas closes it, the same swatch closes it again (panel_remove_tests).
block_inset shrank the row by inset_x on both sides, so the effect and layout-grid rows' minus button sat 8 pt left of the Fill and Stroke rows' (the two are 8 in from the left, 24 pt icons). The inset moves the left edge only now; a test holds every Remove button of a panel to one x. The icon spacing tests lost their debug print and their hard-coded window width (the content rect's width is asked for instead).
…heir dropdowns A selection that no longer has a stroke leaves the settings nothing to set, so the popover closes (the button with it) instead of showing rows for a stroke that is gone. Escape with one of the popover's dropdowns open closed the settings too: the shortcut runs before the binding, and only egui's popup knows the dropdown wants that Escape. The shortcut now lets it pass (Popup::is_any_open), so Escape closes the dropdown first and the settings on the next press.
The auto layout's extra settings (strokes in layout, canvas stacking, text baselines) leave the section's inline rows for one popover, opened from a dots button on the gap row and stacked in that order. Inside an instance the button stays enabled and the popover opens: the text baselines are the instance's own to set, as they were inline. Only the strokes and stacking rows read disabled there, with the "comes from the main component" hint. The test is owning_instance, the same one the section uses (inside_instance is false for the instance itself, which left the rows live). The button's rect is held live every frame, so a press on it still toggles the popover shut after the panel scrolls (storytold#730), while the opening anchor is taken once and the popover keeps its place. The anchor had never been set, so the popover opened at a fixed height instead of on its button. Tests: the dots button opens and toggles the popover, an instance keeps its button and opens it, and after the panel scrolls the button still toggles it at its new place while clicks inside land.

Thanks @yelintong for the update. Moving the auto layout settings into a popover is still a design decision for the owner, and it conflicts with #858. |
Unions: UiState keeps both the fill-rule panel fields and the layout/stroke settings popovers; right.rs takes the PR's stroke-settings popover, and the 45-degree/ring grid kinds it predates are put back (type menu, row labels).
…at opened it, and the icon rhythm Content already landed with storytold#803 (its commit is in that branch); the tree keeps main's newer widgets.rs (panel grid constants, setting_row) and the union doc.
|
A status update: this stays open, and here's what would let it land. This follows #789: once that lands, please update it onto main. |

Review of 7587148. I read this PR's own commit (f6f64fb, about 110 changed lines of layout_panel.rs plus lib.rs, shortcuts.rs, two test files and the docs) in full, and the rest of the diff only for what it brings from the stack. Not approvable yet because it is stacked on #822 and #823, which are still open (#789 has merged), and it conflicts with main.
On the commit itself I found no defect:
advanced()is removed from the section and its two dropdowns plus the baselines checkbox move intosettings(), shown in the popover in the order the description gives. Strokes/stacking are wrapped inadd_enabled_ui(!in_instance)with the "comes from the main component" hover, and the baselines checkbox sits outside that wrapper, so the instance's own setting stays live, as the description says.settings_togglekeepslayout_settings_buttoncurrent every frame but setslayout_settings_anchoronly on the opening click, which is what lets the outside-press hold toggle it shut after a scroll without moving it. Opening the popover closes the colour picker first, so the two cannot be open together.show()takes the popover out ofapp.ui, recomputes the common layout and the instance test (owning_instance, matching the section), and drops it when the layout is gone (selection changed to something without auto layout), clearing the stored button rect.close_settingsreturns whether it closed anything, so Escape only consumes the key when the popover was open.- The grid branch puts the toggle next to the row gap, the other branches next to the gap. Both go through
settings_toggle.
What I need before approving: the stack merged (or retargeted) in order, then main merged, then the exact head validated. I'd rather not validate the stack's other commits under this PR's number. Not run here: I ran nothing locally and could not build a candidate for a conflicting branch.
Depends on #789, #822 and #823 (
feat/popover→feat/colour-picker→feat/stroke-settings). Merge them in that order; this branch is based on #823, so their commits show in this PR's list too — this PR's own work is the last commit (f6f64fb).What it adds
The test is
owning_instance, the same one the section uses —inside_instanceis false for the instance itself, which left the rows live. The button's rect is held live every frame, so a press on it still toggles the popover shut after the panel scrolls (#730), while the opening anchor is taken once and the popover keeps its place. The anchor had never been set, so the popover opened at a fixed height instead of on its button.

layout_panel.rs— the popover, its button and anchor, the instance rule.lib.rs— the popover's state and its per-frame draw;shortcuts.rs— Escape.layout_settings_tests.rs,layout_scroll_click_tests.rs,docs/ui-parity.md,docs/auto-layout-parity.md.How to check
…on the gap row: the popover opens on that button with Strokes, Canvas stacking and (on a horizontal stack) Align text baselines.…again at its new place: it closes on the first click, not shut-and-reopen (M4: fill rules from the Fill section — the panel (UI half) #730).…is still enabled and the popover opens, with Strokes and Canvas stacking greyed and the baselines still clickable.Checks
