Part of #857: its third point, "a setting to open on the Home tab instead of a new file". The other two points aren't in this PR:

What changed

  • Preferences ▸ "Start on the Home screen" (pref.startOnHome {on?}), off by default.
    • With it on, the desktop app starts on Home instead of opening a new empty file.
    • Files named on the command line, invite links and recovered files still open as before.
    • The first run already starts on Home, and still does.
  • Prefs::start_on_home is saved in state.json with the other preferences. Older settings files read it as false.
  • The checkbox isn't shown in the web build, like "Save files automatically".
  • The label is translated in every catalog that already has "Save files automatically": es, de, fr, nl, sv, fi, pt-BR, ja, ko and zh-Hans. es is required by the i18n test.
  • docs/mcp.md documents the command.

Verified

  • cargo xtask ci passes: fmt, clippy, tests, layers, assets and wasm.
  • In the running app (Windows, through the control channel):
    • pref.startOnHome {on: true} shows the checkbox ticked in Preferences.
    • After a restart, the app opens on Home with no file tab.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a preference to start the desktop app on the Home screen instead of opening a new document. Files specified at launch still open as usual, and --control continues to open a new document.
    • The setting is available in Preferences and through a command, with labels translated into multiple languages.

Launching opens a new empty file, which then has to be closed to get
back to Home. Preferences ▸ "Start on the Home screen"
(`pref.startOnHome {on?}`, off by default) starts the desktop app on Home
instead. Files named on the command line and recovered files still open.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a desktop preference to start on the Home screen. The Preferences dialog and a command expose the setting. Startup uses it to decide whether to create a document when no documents are open.

Changes: Home startup preference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add the startup preference
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/view.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/locales/*, docs/mcp.md
Adds start_on_home, defaults it to false, and exposes it through a command and a non-WASM Preferences checkbox. Adds translations and command documentation.
Apply the preference during startup
apps/figcraft/src/main.rs
First runs remain on Home. Otherwise, startup creates a new document when Home is not preferred or control mode is active. Tests cover these startup conditions.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bc35f

German users may not understand that this setting starts the app on Home. The impact is limited to the German labels; command-line file startup remains unaffected.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bc35f

This is a small, backward-compatible startup change using existing settings and command paths. Explicitly opened and recovered documents take precedence over the preference, and the change does not add collaboration permissions or network access.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added command's direct authority is bounded to one preference in the application session and its persisted settings. Its startup consumer suppresses creation of an empty document; it does not select another user's document or modify collaboration ownership.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Automation reaches the new preference through the existing engine.execute and Session::execute dispatch path, just like neighboring preferences. This adds a command capability within that existing authority, not a new endpoint or authentication mechanism.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The preference inherits normal shutdown-based settings persistence rather than an immediate write on each toggle. Interruption before saving can lose the preference change, while the existing private temporary-file and rename mechanism contains settings-write failure. This lifecycle predates the PR.

Add a startup-boundary test for start_on_home.

The existing command-level tests do not execute main's later-launch decision. A command test can pass even if startup incorrectly calls file.new when no documents are restored and start_on_home is enabled. Add an app-level test that covers this state and asserts that the document list remains empty.

Add a focused test for pref.startOnHome.

The command has no test for its explicit-setting and toggle behavior. Add coverage for the default value, explicit on values, and omitted-argument toggling.

Correct the German preference label.

“Mit Start beginnen” does not identify the Home screen. Use a clear translation for both labels.

Proposed translation
-"Start on the Home screen" = "Mit Start beginnen"
+"Start on the Home screen" = "Auf dem Startbildschirm starten"

-"pref.startOnHome" = "Mit Start beginnen"
+"pref.startOnHome" = "Auf dem Startbildschirm starten"

Also applies to: 1927-1927

I read the whole diff and the startup code in apps/figcraft/src/main.rs around it. The hosted CI (test (ubuntu-latest) and wasm32 check) is green on this head; I didn't build or run it myself (no cargo here), so the behaviour is by my reading plus the PR's own Windows check.

What I checked.

  • The startup condition. file.new now runs only when session.docs.is_empty() && !first_run && !session.prefs.start_on_home. session.prefs is set from the saved settings (svc.prefs) earlier in main, so the saved value is in place before the check; a file named on the command line, an invite link or a recovered file leaves docs non-empty, so those paths open as before, as the description says. The first-run path (Home) is untouched.
  • The default. start_on_home is false in Prefs::default(), so a settings file saved before this change reads as off, and nobody's startup changes unless they tick the box. A pref that wasn't there can't break an older state.json, because Prefs is filled from defaults for a missing field (the PR says older files read false).
  • Command and UI. pref.startOnHome {on?} is built with the same pref(...) helper as pref.autoSave, and the checkbox is under the same !cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") guard as "Save files automatically", so the web build doesn't show a setting it can't use.
  • Translations. The label and the command's label are in en.toml and in es.toml (the required catalog: "Empezar en Inicio", matching "Home" = "Inicio" there), and also in de, fr, nl, sv, fi, pt-BR, ja, ko and zh-Hans. I checked the ones that reuse the app's own word for Home against that catalog (de "Start", sv "Start", fi "Aloitus", fr "Accueil", pt-BR "Início", es "Inicio", ko "홈", ja "ホーム", zh-Hans "主页"); nl keeps "Home", as its catalog does. The catalogs that don't carry "Save files automatically" (cs, es-419, id, ru, tr) don't get the new row either, so nothing is missing relative to that neighbour.
  • Docs. docs/mcp.md documents the command next to pref.autoSave. (The two pref.language lines in the context of that hunk are both on main already; not from this PR.)

Not a blocker: CodeRabbit asks for a test of the startup decision in main. That code isn't reachable from a unit test today, and figcraft's rules don't require one for this, so I'm not asking for it.

Approving: the change is small, off by default, covered by the required catalog, and hosted CI is green on this exact head.

Thank you, @justinjohn0306! This is merged with your commits intact. Two additions on your branch: an engine test that the preference persists, and --control ignores the preference, since automation expects a document.
