Owner

Operators can now check Headscale releases from Settings and install patch updates from either the owner-only UI or meshpanel headscale update. This supports a local systemd service running /usr/bin/headscale serve, including Restart=always.

The shared updater downloads from upstream GitHub, verifies the published checksum, stops the service, backs up the binary/configuration/SQLite data, atomically replaces the binary, restarts it, and checks health. Major/minor upgrades require manual intervention. Failed post-start health checks retain backups rather than blindly downgrading a potentially migrated database.

UI installation is opt-in. A fixed sudoers command launches the installed /usr/bin/meshpanel helper through a separate systemd unit, outside the panel's filesystem sandbox. The helper reads a root-owned configuration, independently verifies the confirmed release, serializes installs, and rejects relative or uncovered database paths. Example configuration and sudoers rules are included in the deployment files and packages. Upstream Headscale checksums are verified over HTTPS; this does not use Meshpanel's release signing key.

Validation:

  • make lint and go test -race ./... passed.
  • Focused recovery tests cover backup failures, cancellation, concurrent installs, unsupported databases, checksum mismatch, version confirmation and owner-only access.
  • Browser checks passed at 1440px, 375px and landscape widths, with light/dark themes, reduced motion, confirmation and progress visibility.
  • make size passed: 30 MB.

The real privileged systemd installation was not run against a live Headscale deployment; lifecycle commands are covered with a fake service runner and real temporary-file backup/replacement operations.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added owner-only Headscale update checks and installation through the settings page, with progress feedback and audit tracking.
    • Added a CLI command to check for and install updates. Installation supports local Linux/systemd deployments using SQLite and newer patch releases within the same major/minor version.
    • Update downloads are verified against upstream checksums. Installation backs up the binary, configuration, and data before replacing the binary.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance and example configuration for enabling updates.
    • Included update configuration and sudoers examples in Debian and RPM packages.

Walkthrough

The change adds opt-in Headscale patch updates for supported Linux/systemd installations that use SQLite. It adds checksum-verified downloads, a privileged installer with backups and health checks, a CLI command, and owner-only web controls.

Changes: Headscale Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release policy and verified downloads
internal/update/headscale.go, internal/update/headscale_test.go
Adds eligibility checks for newer patch releases in the same major and minor version, plus Linux downloads verified against upstream checksums. Tests cover policy and download verification.
Privileged installation lifecycle
internal/config/config.go, deploy/headscale-update.example.yaml, internal/hsupdate/*
Adds trusted configuration validation and a privileged installer. The installer checks SQLite paths, serializes updates, backs up the binary, configuration, and data, replaces the binary, restarts the service, and checks health. Tests cover installation failures and recovery.
CLI and deployment integration
cmd/meshpanel/*, deploy/config.example.yaml, deploy/headscale-update.sudoers, .goreleaser.yaml, README.md, AGENTS.md
Adds the meshpanel headscale update command and configures the web process to invoke the privileged helper. Documents supported setups and packages the example configuration and sudoers file.
Owner-facing web updates
internal/web/handlers_admin.go, internal/web/handlers_headscale_update.go, internal/web/headscale_update_test.go, internal/web/server.go, internal/web/static/css/app.css, internal/web/templates/pages/settings.html
Adds owner-only update checks and confirmed installation actions. The settings page displays release information, installation availability, and progress feedback. Tests cover access and install conditions.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 36f54

The reviewed update flow is mergeable with no established release-blocking risk; documented manual recovery limits remain explicit.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 36f54

The privileged update path is opt-in and tightly constrained. However, abrupt installer termination after stopping Headscale can leave the control service stopped, and retrying the update does not recover that state. Normal cancellation is handled, but the real privileged systemd lifecycle has not been validated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Abrupt helper termination after the explicit service stop can strand Headscale stopped. Recovery depends on the helper's defer executing, the transient command supplies no independent recovery action, and a subsequent update rejects an inactive service before reaching recovery. This creates a new failure-containment gap for control-plane availability, although normal cancellation receives a fresh recovery context.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The delegated operation affects the configured local Headscale executable, service, configuration and SQLite state. A compromised Meshpanel process with the optional sudoers grant could invoke the same constrained update without the web owner gate, but the helper still restricts release and path selection. An upstream compromise could affect the installed service and subsequent root-side execution of its version command.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment retains no verified findings. Focused inspection connects the new action to authenticated dashboard routing, session CSRF validation and an explicit Owner check before the privileged callback. This closes the route-wiring proof gap without establishing exhaustive security coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The web-to-root boundary delegates a fixed operation, not a shell command. HTTP input cannot select the executable, service, helper configuration or repository. The tag crosses on stdin and is independently checked against a fresh release inside the privileged process.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Normal cancellation preserves recovery ownership, but abrupt helper loss while the host remains running does not. Once Headscale has been explicitly stopped, the in-process recovery defer cannot run after process death, and the updater's active-service precondition prevents a normal retry from repairing that state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give interrupted installations a persisted phase record and an independent recovery owner. Recovery should distinguish an incomplete backup from a completed replacement and must not blindly downgrade a potentially migrated database. Validate helper death after stop and replacement against a real systemd service.

Outside diff Narrow the Updates security note.

Narrow the Updates security note.

This section correctly says that Headscale updates use upstream checksums.txt, not Meshpanel's signed-release verification. The later Security notes still say that all updates require Meshpanel's release key and an owner confirmation. The documented CLI path uses the root helper directly. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update that security note to distinguish Meshpanel self-updates from Headscale updates. Otherwise, operators can assume guarantees that the Headscale helper does not provide.

Proposed documentation fix

+- **Meshpanel updates:** installed only if signed with the release key built into the binary, and only by an owner after confirmation.
+- **Headscale updates:** installed by the root helper after upstream checksum verification; the CLI path does not use Meshpanel's release signature or owner confirmation.

Update the Security notes “Updates” entry to distinguish Meshpanel self-updates
from Headscale updates: retain the release-key and owner-confirmation guarantees
for Meshpanel, and state that Headscale updates use upstream checksum
verification and the CLI root-helper path does not use Meshpanel’s release
signature or owner confirmation.
