feat: suggest worktree paths and create them from Branch Cleanup - #114
Conversation
Let the Create Worktree suggestion follow the same template Better Worktrees uses, so a worktree can sit beside the repository or under a chosen directory.

Configure and resolve worktree paths package.json, package.nls*.json, src/config.ts, src/worktreePath.ts, tests/src/worktreePath.test.ts, tests/src/config-defaults.test.ts, ThirdPartyNotices.txt, README.md |
Adds the worktreePathTemplate setting and default. The resolver expands placeholders, sanitizes branch names, and resolves POSIX and Windows paths. Tests and documentation cover template and resolution behavior. |
Synchronize worktree path state src/types.ts, src/gitGraphView.ts, src/extension.ts, web/main.ts, web/messageHandler.ts, tests/src/extension.test.ts, tests/src/gitGraphView.test.ts, tests/web/main.test.ts, tests/web/messageHandler.test.ts, docs/testing/perspectives/src/gitGraphView-test/* |
Adds worktree path state to the webview contract. The extension sends the current settings when the configuration changes. The webview updates its state and records main worktree paths. |
Use path suggestions in creation dialogs web/worktreeSuggestion.ts, web/commitMenu.ts, web/refMenu.ts, web/utils.ts, tests/web/commitMenu.test.ts, tests/web/refMenu.test.ts, tests/web/utils.test.ts, docs/testing/perspectives/web/*, README.md, CHANGELOG.md |
Both worktree creation dialogs use suggestedWorktreePath. Create Worktree Here updates the suggestion when the branch changes while the path still matches its previous suggestion. Documentation and tests describe the resolved paths. |
Add Create Worktree to Branch Cleanup web/branchCleanupPanel.ts, web/main.ts, web/refMenu.ts, web/keyboardNavigation.ts, web/utils.ts, media/main.css, l10n/web/*, tests/web/branchCleanupPanel.test.ts, tests/web/main.keyboard.test.ts, tests/web/main.refOverflow.test.ts, tests/web/main.test.ts, tests/web/i18n.test.ts, tests/web/overlayLayers.test.ts, tests/web/setup.ts, README.md, CHANGELOG.md |
Adds a Create Worktree button to branch rows. The button is disabled for branches already checked out or while a refresh is in progress. Enabled buttons open the creation dialog. |

Merge Risk:
Minimal · up to fe5de
-
The documentation issue is fixed. An uncommon lookup failure may prefill the wrong location, but users can edit the path before creating a worktree; no merge-blocking risk remains.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 19c86
-
A delayed response after switching repositories can produce a worktree suggestion anchored to the wrong repository. The path remains visible and editable, creation requires confirmation, and operations retain existing user permissions.
Retained concerns
- Medium · reliability · inferred: If repository A's commit response arrives after selection changes to B, the new cache can record A's main-worktree path under B. Templates using repoPath or repoName can then suggest an A-anchored destination for B's worktree. Accepting that suggestion before a corrective response creates a cross-repository filesystem ownership mistake. Stale display handling predates this PR; using its result to choose creation destinations is new. Explicit confirmation and an editable path limit the impact.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The demonstrated scope is worktree creation and optional terminal startup on the extension host's filesystem, under its existing process identity. A destination need not be repository-contained. The inspected flow does not establish additional privileges or an independently reachable remote attack path.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — The supported introduced concern is cross-repository destination confusion, not verified attacker-controlled execution: a stale response can supply another repository's path context, but a user must still accept the displayed suggestion. No mechanism for an attacker to force that acceptance was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Template text crosses from workspace configuration into webview data. Initial state uses script-safe JSON serialization, dialog defaults are HTML-escaped, and Git receives argument arrays through cp.spawn rather than shell interpolation. These controls counter template-to-script and shell-interpolation concerns in the inspected flow.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The creation sink and Git process handling are unchanged from the supplied base. Success permits optional terminal startup and graph refresh; failure follows existing status reporting. The PR adds no extension-owned creation rollback or interruption-recovery mechanism, and Git's internal recovery behavior was not verified.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Carry repository identity and a request generation through commit-load responses. Reject obsolete results before updating repository state or destination caches, and derive cache ownership from the matched request rather than the mutable current selection.

A template such as ${constructor} was reading Object.prototype, and a Windows path like D:worktrees stayed drive-relative instead of an absolute path.
A linked checkout was expanding repoPath to itself, so a template such as repoPath/.worktrees/branch nested another worktree directory inside the checkout that was open.

| `${repoPath}` is the main checkout, including when the graph is open on a linked worktree. A template such as `${repoPath}/.worktrees/${branch}` therefore stays beside the main repository instead of nesting another `.worktrees` directory inside the worktree you have open. A leading `~` expands to the home directory, and a relative template resolves against the main worktree. On Windows, a path that names a drive without a root, such as `D:worktrees`, becomes an absolute path using that drive's working directory, or the drive root when the drive has none. The default places each worktree beside the main checkout. To collect them under one directory instead: |

Describe the example path as inside the main worktree.
For a main worktree at /test/repo, ${repoPath}/.worktrees/${branch} resolves to /test/repo/.worktrees/<branch>, not a sibling directory. Replace “beside the main repository” with “under the main worktree” so users can choose the intended location. (nodejs.org)

A branch already checked out in a worktree keeps the button visible and disabled.

🟡 Current branch gets unusable worktree action
When worktree lookup fails, checkedOut stays false even for a row marked isCurrent. Creating that worktree fails because the branch is already checked out in the current repository.
Learn more
Branch Cleanup reads the current-branch marker separately from worktree status. A failed worktree query leaves every row's status unknown, but the branch marked current still occupies the checkout that served the request. The button becomes enabled and opens a dialog that sends git worktree add for that branch; Git rejects the duplicate checkout. The marker comes from parseBranchSnapshot, and the unknown status comes from synthesizeWorktreeFact.
Example: In a repository on main, worktree enumeration fails but branch enumeration succeeds. The main row has isCurrent: true and worktree: { kind: "unknown" }. Clicking Create Worktree for main ends in a Git error instead of offering only available branches.
Recommended fix: Treat row.isCurrent === true as checked out even when row.worktree.kind is unknown. Keep the existing used-worktree guard for branches checked out elsewhere.
| const checkedOut = row.worktree.kind === "used"; | |
| if (checkedOut || this.requestInFlight) { | |
| const checkedOut = row.isCurrent === true || row.worktree.kind === "used"; | |
| if (checkedOut || this.requestInFlight) { |

The text labels kept the actions column wide. Hover titles keep the names.
The shared rounded button rule was display:block and stacked the icons.
The table was only as wide as its columns, so the icons sat short of the panel.

Thank you for this PR, and for crediting Better Worktrees so carefully. CI passes now that main's audit failure is fixed, and I'm trying the changes out in VS Code. There is one thing I need before merging. Required: license notice for the code ported from Node.js

I built a VSIX from this branch and tried it in VS Code (on WSL) with a test repository that has a linked worktree. Everything in the manual test plan worked as described:
I haven't tried Windows paths. I've ticked the manual test items in the description. Thank you again. This is a well-rounded feature, and I really appreciate that you also updated the Japanese strings and the test perspective docs. |
The path helpers follow Node's lib/path.js, and esbuild minify drops source comments from the VSIX. The MIT notice has to ship in ThirdPartyNotices.txt, and the source header names the adapted functions. Also match the main-worktree wording, including the branch-name trim, and name the '=' drive-key check.

Thank you for the quick and thorough follow-up. I checked fe5def0: the Node.js notice matches the header of lib/path.js, the source header names the adapted functions, and the optional wording fixes read well. CI is green on the merge with main. Merging now. I'll take care of the remaining Windows path tests, the Branch Cleanup case for a failed worktree lookup, and the test perspective docs in a follow-up PR. Thanks again for contributing this feature. |
- Translate the web/messageHandler.ts and web/refMenu.ts shards and manifests, and the media perspectives, into English - Add the PR #114 follow-up sections for the setWorktreePath routing and the suggested worktree path (TC-090, TC-133 to TC-135) - Regenerate the root INDEX; it now matches the #126 branch apart from the Git 2.56 lineage fix
