These are the fixes and improvements that run Switch 2 titles on an AYN Odin 3 (Snapdragon 8 Elite, Adreno 830, 24 GB, Android 15). The branch also carries the other contributors' commits that build runs with. It is based on nx2 and has nx2 e736dfd merged in (the merge commit lists how its conflicts were resolved).

  • Where nx2 has since gained its own version of a change, that change is left out (lists at the end).
  • Where a commit had to be merged with upstream code, its message says how ("On nx2: ...").
  • Phone-only behaviour is gated to Android, so desktop keeps upstream's behaviour. See Desktop impact.

AI disclosure: Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (implementation, debugging, porting and this description). Every commit made with AI help says so in an Assisted-by: trailer.

Ours, by area

Loader and Android frontend

  • .nx2 packed dumps, next to upstream's .nup:
    • A .nx2 is an extracted-type NSP (PFS0) holding a loose Switch 2 dump: the ExeFS files, the RomFS as game.romfs, and optional control.nacp and icon sidecars. It boots through the NSP loader; .nup is a different container and is untouched.
    • The title, icon and version come from the package's sidecars and RomFS, else from <name>.png/.nacp next to it.
    • Qt and Android list .nx2.
    • Qt has Tools > "Pack Switch 2 Dump to .nx2", next to upstream's game-list "Convert to NUP".
  • Loose ExeFS dumps on Android:
    • The VFS lists a content URI's children through the document provider (Android only, __ANDROID__).
    • The game list finds loose dumps.
    • New "Load file" option.
  • hid: NPad::ControllerUpdate ignores motion and button updates, which it never acted on, and so no longer dereferences the applet resource before it exists (a gyro crash at boot).
  • kernel: freed guest memory goes back to the host (runs of 16 pages or more). Android only.
  • build: NOMINMAX for clang-cl.

GPU thread and macros

  • nx2:gpu sparse blocks:
    • The GPU thread no longer waits on kernel locks. Mario Kart World deadlocked loading a race: a guest thread waited on the GPU, the GPU back thread on the page-table lock while backing a sparse block, and that lock's owner on the guest thread's core.
    • A refill thread now allocates and maps up to 16 spare 4 MiB blocks ahead. BackSparseWrite takes one, or waits up to 200 ms and then drops that write.
    • 214 and 215 free, back, map and unmap without holding the region mutex; 216 frees pages before taking it.
    • nx2's zero-write skip, pending blocks, 216 tile handling and lazy GPU-only regions are kept. nx2:gpu: release the previous backing when a GPU-only region is re-created #212's release of a re-created region's backing is kept too, without its own byte count: FreeReleasedRegions counts the pages out, and counted twice the GPU-only total went too low.
  • gpu_split:
    • Recovers from a lost back-thread wake-up.
    • On Android, the front sleeps on a futex past its spins and the back parks on a raw futex. Mario Kart World's front had spent 85% of each frame spinning, keeping a big core busy and the phone at 92 to 103 °C.
  • macro: Turing macros compile to ARM64. Calls are checked against the interpreter, with a fallback on any difference. The split's front runs the macros. The ARM64 JIT is used on Android only.
  • host1x:
    • Syncpoint waiters are notified only when there are some.
    • Syncpoint ids are bounds-checked in the manager (increments, waits, actions).
  • memory_manager: PageTableOp takes the kind-map guard too.

Buffer cache, texture cache and memory

  • buffer_cache:
    • Fixes:
      • Stale or deleted buffers in multi-range storage bindings.
      • Oversized native vertex streams are clamped instead of thrown.
      • A download takes only the buffer's own part of a range.
    • Phone paths, on Android only:
      • On integrated GPUs, GPU-written buffers are read directly.
      • Synchronizing unwritten ranges is skipped.
    • A download window, off by default.
  • texture_cache:
    • Textures the host cannot create (over 4 GiB on Adreno) keep their lower mip levels, or use the null image, instead of terminating.
    • Copies by guest level stay off trimmed images.
    • Trimmed images count their host image's size in the collector's total.
  • Two settings, off by default and per game: reduce_texture_resolution and release_gpu_only_memory (experimental). They are listed with the renderer hacks on Android and in Qt's graphics hacks tab, with translations added.
  • vulkan_device:
    • On Android: memory use from VMA without VK_EXT_memory_budget (Qualcomm), and an integrated GPU budget of a fifth of RAM, at least 4 GiB.
    • Other integrated GPUs keep upstream's cap.
  • Staging buffers: given back sooner, and no idle 16 MiB+ buffers kept. Android only.
  • Stream buffer wrap fix: after a wrap whose region-0 check fell back, the next request of that size or smaller skipped the check and got offset 0 while the GPU still read it. The next request now checks region 0 again. This applies everywhere.
  • Held writes (Franseven, from 62a63ee14e): guest CPU writes held back from GPU-written memory are applied before each submitted command list, byte for byte (OnCachedWrite/CachedWriteMemory), instead of re-uploading whole pages over GPU data that was never copied back. Switch 2 programs only; EDEN_NX2_HELD_WRITES=0 turns it off. nx2's read traps are kept, and the semaphore part is left out.

Vulkan on Adreno

  • Shared memory the device lacks is emulated in a storage buffer, with bounds-clamped accesses.
  • On phone GPUs, large texture arrays are backed instead of left black, and natively sampled ASTC arrays upload layer by layer.
  • Presenting continues after the surface cannot be recreated (app in the background).
  • Draws of Switch 2 programs wait for their pipelines instead of being skipped (Mario Kart World raced in another scene's lighting otherwise).
  • On Android, draws that write memory wait too, and pipeline workers leave the background cores for Switch 2 titles.
  • Recorded draws go to the worker every 32 draws on Android, as on desktop.
  • Task/mesh pipelines are built only with VK_EXT_mesh_shader task and mesh support, and a skip is reported once.
  • For Switch 2 programs, 2D arrays get cube views: native shaders sample point-light atlases as cubes. EDEN_NX2_CUBE_VIEWS=0 turns them off.
  • On Android, async shaders are on by default and turned on for Switch 2 titles.
  • The game's own DLSS network (Duck912's 401dfb9): off by default on Android (the replacement upscale runs; EDEN_NX2_GAME_DLSS=1 opts in), as nx2 on desktop. nx2 has since removed the game_dlss_network setting, see below. On a 24 GB phone, compiling the emulated tensor passes of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave's DLSS network took the process from 3.1 to 7.6 GB in 4 s; malloc failed and Turnip crashed on a pipeline build thread. With FSR 3.1 the game loads and plays.
  • The SPIR-V the driver rejects is dumped on Android. Elsewhere set EDEN_NX2_DUMP_SPIRV=1.

nx2 services

  • vdecsvc, AV1:
    • On Android, decoded with libgav1, built only there, since Android's FFmpeg has no libdav1d. Desktop keeps upstream's FFmpeg path.
    • RGB conversion runs on four threads, with the stream's matrix and range.
    • Replies follow fefw's layout for 101, 109 (three inputs queued, busy result), 213 and 311/314.
    • EDEN_NX2_VDEC_TRACE=1 turns on a trace.
  • gsv 912:
    • Destroys a decoder image pool (fefw's DestroyImagePool). Titles that free the images one by one find them gone.
    • Destroyed images' GPU mappings are retired one second later, which fixes a use-after-free in Turnip.
  • nvdrv: the GPU-only region registry is cleared per session.

Mario Kart World and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave

  • Mario Kart World:
    • The race-load deadlock in the sparse-block backing is fixed.
    • Race-load and in-race crash fixes: copies into trimmed images, syncpoint ids past the table, the kind map, vertex streams, stale buffers.
    • The memory work above for a 24 GB phone.
    • 60 FPS mode (mkw_60fps): forces the game's fixed one-vblank frame mode. It patches the same site as Franz's 30 FPS mode (ldr w8, [x19, #0x210] becomes mov w8, #1), with no frame-time patch.
      • The game's modes, read from its main loop: 0 is dynamic, from the CPU frame time at [x19, #0x128]; 1 is one vblank; 2 is two vblanks.
      • Its tick counter advances by the vblank count, so a host too slow for 60 fps runs the game in slow motion.
      • When several are set, the 30 FPS mode wins over 60 FPS, and 60 FPS over dynamic. The load log names the mode applied.
    • Android toggles: the 30 and 60 FPS modes are listed with the renderer hacks. Dynamic FPS has no Android toggle: on the phone it broke the ARM64 macro JIT (156,647 "instruction outside uploaded RAM" errors in a session, 0 without it).
    • Frame pacing: the game's own interval is still honoured by default. The game asks for two vblanks a frame after a frame runs long, which on slower hosts is nearly every frame, so it holds them at 30 fps (on an Odin 3, 12-15 ms of sleep a frame). EDEN_NX2_MKW_PACING=1 paces it at one vblank instead, still capped at 60 fps, and =0 doesn't pace it.
    • Presents of games that wait on vsync aren't paced. A game that binds a native event to vsync (261) waits on it between frames, so it already runs on Eden's vblank timer.
      • Pacing its presents as well, to a 60 Hz clock of another phase, held each one until it had missed the next vblank: Mario Kart World, which binds one, ran at 27-30 fps with 4-14 ms of pacing sleep a frame while the GPU threads idled half the time.
      • Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave binds no vsync event and keeps its pacing; without it, it runs at double speed.
      • EDEN_NX2_PACE_VSYNC_GAMES=1 paces vsync games anyway.
    • Command list fixes (nx2_command_lists, "Switch 2 command list fixes"): upstream's command list series becomes a setting.
      • The series is the submit-time copy of a list's words, plus copies and flushes of lists on GPU-written pages.
      • The setting is read once when a game starts and logged. It is on by default everywhere; on Android, Mario Kart World runs without it unless its own custom settings turn it on (Ocarina of Time deadlocks without it, see below).
      • On an Odin 3, Mario Kart World's front waited 47 ms a second on the series ("pending sleep"; 2 ms without), ran at 31.8 fps against 33.1, and flickered.
      • EDEN_NX2_COMMAND_LISTS=0/1 overrides the setting. Android lists it in Advanced graphics and Qt in the graphics hacks.
    • Dynamic FPS fix: its pacing check looked up the vi2 service thread's process, which is never the game, so its one-vblank pacing never applied. It now looks up the application process.
  • Fortune's Weave:
    • The AV1 movies play.
    • Point lights sample the cube views.
    • Its swkbd and the vi2/gsv/audio fixes were already in nx2.

Commits from other contributors

Cherry-picked with -x (original author kept, godpow as committer):

  • Wael3rd:
    • Shader recompiler SSA work: drop unused identities; keep the SSA definitions of predicates and flags in blocks; find a label's visited block by lookup; create the phis of sealed blocks only when needed.
    • spirv remembers the ids of scalar constants.
    • Graphics environments can detach from the 3D engine.
    • Native graphics pipelines translate on worker threads (Switch 2 programs, with async shaders on).
  • Franseven:
    • FSEL and native array-cube vector samples (the FSEL part is already in nx2).
    • F2I to 8-bit integers.
    • PRMT in its default mode.
    • Error notifier cleared on install.
    • Three resource sets for the applet capture.
    • WalkBlock ignores stale page runs.
    • Buffer copy-back for titles that read GPU-written data (Pokémon Pokopia).
    • Held writes applied before each command list, byte for byte (the held-write part of 62a63ee14e).
    • Several are from Eden-NS2 and PokeDinner.
  • ZnOw01: macro binds bounded and misparsed host blocks discarded; zero-extent render targets rejected.
  • Duck912: buffers never join through a stale page-table entry, plus the inline index buffer's growth and ChangeRegister on unregistered buffers.
  • xDarkWindx: the descriptor payload grows when a frame overflows it.

Open upstream PRs included

Upstream is a desktop emulator too, so these open PRs ride along, cherry-picked with -x and their authors kept. If one of them is merged first, its commit here comes out empty on rebase.

Left out: #222 (FFMA register form, 0x598-0x59f). nx2 has since decoded 0x59f as SURED.D.2D for Mario Kart World's race compute, so the two clash on that opcode (a duplicate case in the build). It needs reconciling against nx2 by its author.

Since the first push: GPU-thread performance

Profiled on the Odin 3 in Mario Kart World races with Eden's GPU-thread profile (gpu_profile). Each change keeps behaviour exact, has an env.txt kill switch, and passed EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1 (front/back register comparison, 0 differences across seven runs, 15-53k checks each). Together with the MKW detail settings below, races went from ~28-33 to ~36-41 fps; both GPU threads are still the limit, the host GPU is 55-70% busy.

  • Per-entry writer wait only with the command list series on (dma_pusher.cpp): with nx2_command_lists off, IsGpuWrittenCommands is always false, yet the front waited for queued GPU writers on every GPFIFO entry (~130k/s) and discarded the result: 343-675 ms/s of the front thread. Desktop (series on) is unchanged.
  • Semaphore ledger (EDEN_NX2_ACQ_LEDGER=0 disables): the front records the 32-bit puller releases it queues; an acquire already met by a queued GPU release, or by guest memory, skips draining the back. ~90% of MKW's acquires (2.3-3.2k/s) no longer drain. CPU-written semaphores and everything else keep the old path.
  • Same-value writes elided inside the ARM64 macro JIT (EDEN_NX2_JIT_SKIP_SAME=0): exactly the writes FrontWrite would drop (not executable, value and shadow unchanged, never in Replay mode) skip the call into C++. 2.2-4.2 M writes/s; the macro zone fell from ~198 to ~105-130 ms/s. ARM64 only.
  • Front macros' state writes sunk on the back (EDEN_NX2_MACRO_SINK=0): non-executable macro writes travel as ordinary method entries and are applied in ConsumeSinkImpl, instead of a full CallMethod each (~3 M/s).
  • Constant buffer data batched (EDEN_NX2_CB_BATCH=0, EDEN_NX2_CB_BATCH_PB=0): a macro's CB_DATA words, and pushbuffer runs starting at the offset register (0x8e3-0x8f3), reach the back as one entry processed by ProcessCBMultiData (same bytes, same offsets). ~1.4-1.5 M words/s now arrive in ~0.65-0.7 M entries; executable calls on the back fell from ~2.5 M to ~1.2 M/s.
  • Constant buffer binds that change nothing are not sent (EDEN_NX2_CB_BIND_SKIP=0).
  • Small UBO compare in place (EDEN_NX2_UBO_DIRECT=0): the reuse check reads the guest bytes directly instead of copying them first (ubo reuse 56-58 → 42-47 ms/s).
  • EDEN_NX2_DISPATCH_DRAWS: draws between worker dispatches, default unchanged (32). EDEN_NX2_FLUSH_DRAWS=512 (submits every 512 draws instead of 128) gave the back 15-20% more draws per second on the phone; it stays an opt-in for now.
  • Profile: new zones and counters (writer waits, DMA-read drains, a method histogram, sampled hot zones so profiling stays representative, batch/bind/ledger counters). Only active with the profile on.

Since the first push: Mario Kart World detail settings

Both default off; Android toggles next to the 30/60 FPS modes, Qt entries. Applied at NSO load by pattern (each must match exactly once, otherwise skipped and logged), so they survive game updates.

  • mkw_lod_distance, "shorter LOD distance": single player loads GamePerformanceConfigGParam/Extended, whose Graphics config sets LODDistanceRatio to 2.0. Renaming that key in rodata leaves the constructor's 1.0.
  • mkw_shadow_cascades, "fewer shadow cascades": DepthShadow init's cascade count (3) becomes 2, dropping the 160-250 m cascade.
  • EDEN_NX2_MKW_DETAIL (env, overrides both): cascades=1|2|3, lod=1.0|0.75|0.5, and the split-screen presets elink (effect budget for 3 karts instead of 8) and emit (2-player emitter set), plus traffic. With lod=0.5,cascades=1,emit,elink MKW reached ~41 fps on the open track on the Odin 3.

Since the first push: CodeRabbit review

Every point was checked against the code first; all were real.

  • Array-cube TEX lowering packs FP16 results (bit 79) and goes through bind_texture_buffer (items 1, 2).
  • Emulated shared memory is clamped to the device's maxStorageBufferRange; whole-range dispatches share one scratch region per tick with a compute barrier recorded outside the render pass (EDEN_NX2_SCRATCH_REUSE=0 takes a region per dispatch) (items 3, 8).
  • Query-result uploads record their buffer's GPU write tick (item 4).
  • An illegal inline-mode header leaves no method block active (item 5).
  • Item 6 (the writer wait) is the first performance item above.
  • The ARM64 macro JIT records the failing PC like the x86-64 one (item 7).
  • Failed-pipeline SPIR-V dumps carry the pipeline key hash (item 9).
  • On Android, a Switch 2 draw waits for its asynchronous translation instead of being skipped (item 10). This was a flicker source in Mario Kart World; in-race skipped draws went to zero, at the cost of short first-use hitches. Desktop keeps upstream's wait budget: on an RTX 4060 Laptop the NVIDIA driver took up to 6.8 s for one of Mario Kart World's pipelines, and an unbounded wait froze races for up to 16 s. EDEN_NX2_SWITCH2_TRANSLATION_WAIT=1/0 overrides.
  • The detached shader environment converts texture handles with TextureHeaderIndex like the live one (item 12).
  • .nx2 sidecars come from one directory listing, and a packed dump's RomFS version is only extracted when asked for (nitpicks).
  • A retired decoder-image mapping carries the generation it was registered with and is dropped only if it is still that registration (security note).
  • Deferred: item 11 (a written sparse-layers image whose layers failed). The first fix backed such images whole; Mario Kart World's ASTC terrain arrays were then left unbacked without the mark that keeps blits off them, and the Vulkan worker crashed at boot. It was reverted and needs a device-side investigation.

CodeRabbit review, second round

Each point was checked against the code; all were real.

  • AV1 MIME names added to the codec-name fallback (1).
  • A zero-size render target returns no view instead of the null view, which BindRenderTarget could attach (2).
  • Workgroups beyond the emulated shared-memory slices of one dispatch: detection only for now, a rate-limited warning in ComputePipeline::Configure. A real fix needs a base-offset push constant (3, deferred).
  • The small-UBO compare copies the guest bytes once and streams from that copy (4).
  • The JIT's elision state is cleared after each 3D macro, so compute macros never elide with 3D state (5).
  • The semaphore ledger is cleared when the split stops (6).
  • Queued constant buffer words are flushed before an entry's engine is selected (7).
  • The submit threshold is checked on every draw, independent of EDEN_NX2_DISPATCH_DRAWS (8).
  • A write to a sparse block that got no memory after a spare-block timeout is dropped with a warning instead of reaching ASSERT(false) (9).

Since nx2 removed game_dlss_network

Duck912's 3c45b94 runs the game's own DLSS wherever it can and removed the setting. On Android the replacement upscale stays the default (KeplerCompute::GameDlssBlocker), because the emulated tensor passes ran Turnip out of memory; EDEN_NX2_GAME_DLSS=1 opts in. Desktop follows nx2.

Since the first push: Ocarina of Time on NCE

Ocarina of Time (0400486024DEC000) ran on desktop but not on the Odin 3. Three fixes:

  • PAC keys on the NCE core threads (cpu_manager.cpp): Android 15 gives every thread its own PAC A/B keys (a probe shows a different pacia result on each thread and the same pacga). NCE runs guest PAC natively, so the SDK's fiber switch, which signs a context with pacia on one core thread and checks it with autiasp on another, failed with SIGILL (code 2, FPAC). Each CPU core thread now turns the IA, IB, DA and DB keys off before running guest code and back on before it returns. PAC/AUT then pass pointers through unchanged, as Dynarmic's PAC does; pacga keeps the shared GA key. Android arm64 with NCE only.
  • Engine register bounds (kepler_memory.cpp, fermi_2d.cpp, maxwell_dma.cpp): the game sends method 0x1001 on the inline-to-memory subchannel. It is not executable, so it went to the method sink, and KeplerMemory::ConsumeSinkImpl wrote reg_array[0x1001] (0x7F words long). On Android the GPU back thread died with SIGSEGV; on desktop it wrote past the engine. The sinks of these three engines now check the bound, as KeplerCompute's already did, and CallMethod ignores such methods instead of asserting and writing anyway.
  • Command list fixes on by default on Android, except Mario Kart World: without the submit-time copies the game deadlocked about 20 s in. The GPU read command memory the game was already refilling, so a semaphore release was lost and channels 2, 3 and 5 waited on it forever.

Desktop impact

The following are gated to Android (__ANDROID__), so desktop is unchanged:

  • The async-shader default and the Switch 2 override.
  • Mario Kart World running without nx2_command_lists unless its custom settings set it (the setting defaults to on everywhere, as upstream).
  • The PAC keys turned off on the NCE CPU core threads.
  • The Android surface frame-rate hint switch.
  • The game's own DLSS network stays off on Android (replacement upscale), opt in with EDEN_NX2_GAME_DLSS=1; desktop follows nx2.
  • Switch 2 draws waiting for their asynchronous translation (desktop keeps upstream's wait budget, then skips the draw meanwhile).
  • env.txt and the gpu_profile file.
  • Futex waits in the GPU split.
  • The ARM64 macro JIT (other ARM64 desktops keep interpreted macros; the JIT's W^X handling is untested on macOS).
  • libgav1, which is neither built nor fetched on desktop.
  • VMA memory reports without VK_EXT_memory_budget.
  • Direct reads of GPU-written buffers on integrated GPUs, and their host-read barrier.
  • The staging pool release policy.
  • Giving freed guest memory back.
  • Skipping the sync of unwritten ranges.
  • The integrated-GPU RAM budget.
  • Making draws that write memory wait.
  • Pipeline worker placement.
  • Default SPIR-V dumps, and keeping SPIR-V while a pipeline builds.

These are scoped to Switch 2 programs:

  • Cube views of 2D arrays.
  • Draws waiting for their pipelines.
  • Worker-thread translation.
  • More pipeline workers (Android).

These are gated by driver:

  • Phone GPU handling of texture arrays and ASTC layer uploads (Qualcomm, Turnip, ARM, PanVK and Imagination drivers).

These apply everywhere because they are fixes or improvements without a phone-specific reason:

  • Crash and robustness fixes:
    • Methods past the register files of KeplerMemory, Fermi2D and MaxwellDMA (their sinks wrote past reg_array).
    • Null image or lower levels for images the host can't create.
    • Syncpoint bounds.
    • Stale buffer joins.
    • Multi-range segments.
    • Vertex stream clamp.
    • Framebuffer layers.
    • Zero-extent render targets.
    • Macro bind bounds.
    • WalkBlock.
    • Audio manager lifetimes.
    • The kind-map guard.
    • Presenting after a failed surface recreate.
    • Task/mesh pipelines without mesh shader support.
  • Shared memory emulation. It is used only when the device has less shared memory than a shader needs; before, that pipeline failed.
  • Wael3rd's shader recompiler speedups. The output is meant to be identical; they run for every title.
  • Video RGB conversion: four threads, with the stream's colour matrix. Untagged HD video now converts as BT.709 instead of swscale's BT.601 default.
  • Host syncpoint notification only with waiters.
  • The descriptor payload growth.
  • Trimmed images counting their host size.
  • The two new settings, off by default and named in Qt.
  • Mario Kart World's 60 FPS mode (mkw_60fps): off by default, listed in Qt next to the 30 FPS and dynamic modes.
  • Presents of games that bind a vsync event are capped at the swap interval on average (one present of slack) instead of being paced to a grid of another phase (Mario Kart World: no sleeps when slower than the cap, held at 60 on a fast PC; Fire Emblem keeps the grid pacing).
  • The Dynamic FPS pacing fix (it now finds the game's process). The game's interval is still honoured unless EDEN_NX2_MKW_PACING is set.
  • The stream buffer wrap fix.
  • .nx2 loading and the Qt packer. These add a file type and a Tools menu item; other files load as before.
  • The spare sparse-block pool. It applies to Switch 2 titles with sparse or lazily backed GPU-only regions: a refill thread runs while they exist, and their GPU writes no longer allocate on the GPU thread.
  • The GPU-split changes above (semaphore ledger, macro sink, constant buffer batching, bind skip): the split runs for Switch 2 titles on every platform, so desktop gets them too, each with its kill switch. The JIT elision is ARM64 only.
  • The CodeRabbit fixes, and the MKW detail settings (off by default, in Qt).

Debug switches

  • EDEN_NX2_VDEC_TRACE.
  • EDEN_NX2_FRAMES_AHEAD: =2 never waits for the presented frame, only the previous one, so the CPU prepares a frame while the GPU runs the last. It is a debugging aid only, since it caused flicker. =1 and =0 are upstream's.
  • EDEN_ANDROID_FRAME_RATE_HINT: =0 sends the Android surface no frame-rate preference, =<fps> a fixed one. The hint follows the rate frames reach the screen and feeds back on itself: after 30 fps menus, Mario Kart World stayed at 30.0 in races its GPU ran at 40-45 fps. It is read on every update.
  • EDEN_NX2_PACE_VSYNC_GAMES=1: paces games that wait on vsync to the grid like the others, instead of only capping them.
  • EDEN_NX2_COMMAND_LISTS=0/1: overrides the nx2_command_lists setting.
  • EDEN_NX2_NCE_PAC_KEYS=1: keeps the PAC keys on the NCE CPU core threads.
  • EDEN_NX2_MKW_PACING: Mario Kart World's frame pacing. Unset, it honours the game's interval; 1 paces it at one vblank, 0 doesn't pace it.
  • EDEN_NX2_HELD_WRITES (on by default, its state logged when a game loads) and EDEN_NX2_CUBE_VIEWS (on by default, the first 16 cube views made are logged).
  • EDEN_NX2_DUMP_SPIRV.
  • EDEN_NX2_SYNC_CACHE, EDEN_NX2_DIRECT_DOWNLOADS and EDEN_NX2_DOWNLOAD_WINDOW, for the buffer-cache paths.
  • EDEN_NX2_ASYNC_TRANSLATION and EDEN_NX2_ASYNC_TRANSLATION_WAIT_MS.
  • EDEN_NX2_GPU_PROFILE (a gpu_profile file on Android).
  • EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1: compares the split's front and back registers every 4096 macro calls.

  • EDEN_NX2_MKW_DETAIL: see the Mario Kart World detail settings.
  • On Android, env.txt in the user directory sets any of them.

Left out

  • Releasing a region's backing when 214 creates it again (our 76357b7fbe): nx2:gpu: release the previous backing when a GPU-only region is re-created #212, now merged, does it.
  • Franseven's pending semaphore releases and NPad guard from 62a63ee14e. Its CPU-read copy-back is nx2's read traps; its held writes are included.
  • Wael3rd's storage buffer search pruning (65e00ec5f6): nx2 reworked that search (it stops at loaded pointers and binds every candidate pointer). It is a shader compile-time speedup only and needs a re-port.

Already in nx2 in its own form, so dropped:

  • Hole-punching zero fills.
  • The constant-buffer null binding.
  • The sparse zero-write skip.
  • gpu_sentenced_images.
  • Logging auto-stubs once each.
  • gsv 115/126, vi2 212 and gpu 41.
  • The vi2 present changes.
  • The GPU class flags.
  • The NCE ARMv8.1+ default handlers.
  • Wael3rd's native program capture and lowering, the main-heap thresholds, and BC3 recompression on small cards.
  • Franseven's IMAD.X form, the 0x140010 swkbd decode, and the ASTC decode without waiting.
  • whovian's descriptor ring and page-table bounds fixes, and Sssnowyyy's two fixes (all empty picks).
  • Since the rebase onto 8615d8d: Dee1's audio manager lifetime fixes, rdenno's framebuffer layers, FranzQDH's memory block id check (Prevent Memory Block ID Overflow and Validate Page Contiguity #345), our CAS-loop helper (ad98585), and rdenno's command list snapshot fix, ZnOw01's constant buffer bound and Jonas's follow-up (all in Hyrule Warriors fixes: command list snapshots, batched queue submissions, shader lowerings #494).

Also left out:

  • An experimental written-rows upload of sparse layers.
  • The bisect-only switch for root table 0 as bank 17.
  • Wael3rd's docs and README, which point at the Mario Kart World fork's releases.

Testing

  • On the Odin 3 (Android 15, Turnip), the same commits before the final rebase:
    • Mario Kart World races clean: no rejected shaders, no macro errors, correct lighting, no in-race skipped draws, less flicker than the first push; ~36-41 fps in races with the detail settings (both GPU threads are the limit, the GPU is 55-70% busy).
    • Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave loaded and played with the Android defaults on the first push's head (the game's DLSS network off, FSR 3.1 in its place); not re-run on the performance commits.
    • .nx2 and .nup games are listed and boot.
    • Ocarina of Time on NCE runs at ~58 fps through its intro with the three fixes above (before: SIGILL at ~12 s, then a GPU back-thread crash, then a GPU deadlock). Its intro video still stops after the first pass on the phone; that is being looked at separately.
  • Desktop (RTX 4060 Laptop, Windows): Mario Kart World boots and runs with 0 rejected shaders, 0 skipped draws and 0 macro errors; menus ~5 ms a frame. Races froze for seconds with the unbounded translation wait, which is now Android-only (not yet re-run on desktop).
  • Builds: the Android build (mainline, relWithDebInfo, arm64) and a Windows x64 clang-cl Release build (Qt eglantine.exe, eden-cli.exe) compile. MSVC (cl.exe) and Linux builds were not tried.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review d06e4

Some Switch 2 shaders that previously translated can now fail shader lowering, and a few coordinate layouts may sample the wrong registers. Fix the texture-lowering fallback and the coordinate range check before merging. Several earlier concerns in the Vulkan, GPU-split and loader paths remain open.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to d06e4

The change adds long-lived bookkeeping controlled by game commands without a storage limit or routine cleanup. A crafted game could use this to exhaust application memory. Several inspected controls improve isolation and shutdown safety, but the broader loading and execution changes remain only partially assessed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new process-global semaphore ledger retains one host entry per distinct guest-selected mapped word without a capacity limit or retirement when releases complete. A crafted guest can grow this retained state across otherwise completed GPU work, creating a host-memory exhaustion path absent from the base ledger design. Reusing an address replaces its entry, but ordinary acquires and query completion do not remove entries. Cleanup normally waits for split shutdown; releases are also recorded while the split is inactive, when Stop can return without clearing the ledger.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported attack scope is a loaded guest controlling mapped semaphore addresses and release commands within the emulator process. The retained-state concern affects application availability; the inspected evidence does not establish cross-application access, remote reachability, credential exposure, or privilege escalation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A guest can issue releases to many distinct valid mapped words while allowing GPU work to complete. Each new word adds a persistent ledger entry; query retirement does not retire that entry. This separates retained host-memory growth from live queued work and supports the memory-exhaustion concern. Exhaustion was not reproduced, and its practical threshold was not measured.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Guest semaphore addresses pass through GPU-to-device translation before ledger indexing. The ledger can be disabled, repeated releases to the same address overwrite its existing entry, and selected unknown-value operations erase entries. These controls constrain address validity and some stale state but do not impose a retained-entry quota.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — AV1 flush handling clears queued inputs and unfetched outputs, requeues output images, and uses a flush generation to discard a frame written concurrently with flushing while advancing its completion syncpoint. Releasing an image already waiting for a frame preserves its existing sync value. These are explicit recovery controls, although malformed-client lifecycle and concurrency coverage remains partial.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give semaphore bookkeeping an explicit session owner and bounded capacity. Limit recording to the execution mode that consumes it, retire obsolete state, and conservatively drain when capacity, mapping identity, or writer provenance prevents a safe shortcut. Ensure cleanup also covers sessions where split execution never starts.

src/core/loader/nsp.cpp: 1

47-51: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Look up package sidecars with one directory listing.

FindPackageSidecar calls dir->GetFile(stem + '.' + ext) once per extension. The constructor calls it for four icon extensions and one nacp extension, so it makes up to five lookups per .nx2 file. On Android a content-URI directory implements GetFile by listing all children through the provider (FindContentChild). Each package then costs up to five provider queries over the whole games folder. A folder with N .nx2 files without embedded icons costs O(N²) entries read at library scan.

Call dir->GetFiles() once per package. Match the names against stem + '.' + ext in memory. The loader can also pass the same listing to both the icon lookup and the nacp lookup.

-    const auto stem = PackageStem(package);
-    for (const auto extension : extensions) {
-        if (auto sidecar = dir->GetFile(stem + '.' + std::string{extension})) {
-            return sidecar;
-        }
-    }
-    return nullptr;
+    const auto stem = PackageStem(package);
+    const auto files = dir->GetFiles();
+    for (const auto extension : extensions) {
+        const auto wanted = stem + '.' + std::string{extension};
+        const auto it = std::find_if(files.begin(), files.end(),
+                                     [&](const auto& f) { return f->GetName() == wanted; });
+        if (it != files.end()) {
+            return *it;
+        }
+    }
+    return nullptr;

This keeps the lookups per extension in memory, but each package still lists the folder once. Cache the listing per directory if the scan cost is still too high.

src/core/loader/deconstructed_rom_directory.cpp: 1

376-379: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Do not run the RomFS version lookup in the packed-dump constructor.

For a packed dump (.nx2), file_dir->GetParentDirectory() returns null. ReadDumpMetadata then runs FileSys::ExtractRomFS(romfs) during construction. ExtractRomFS reads the full directory and file tables and builds the whole RomFS tree (src/core/file_sys/romfs.cpp:131-160). The construction runs for every packed dump through AppLoader_NSP's constructor (src/core/loader/nsp.cpp:67-70), so metadata-only uses also pay the cost. The comment on LooseRomFS() says metadata-only loaders never need the RomFS, which this extraction contradicts.

Defer the extraction until the version is needed, and cache the result so it runs at most once. Do not place it on a path that guest service calls can reach. The comment at src/core/loader/nsp.cpp:72-74 says Read* functions can be called from guest service calls and must avoid content URI lookups on Android. NSP::ReadDisplayVersion forwards to this loader (nsp.cpp:321-325). Confirm the ReadDisplayVersion call sites before choosing the lazy point.

Avoid a full-size device-local allocation for each indirect or zero-workgroup dispatch.

For indirect dispatches, and for direct dispatches with zero workgroups, workgroups is set to slices. The scratch size therefore equals the full slices * info.emulated_shared_memory_size. The staging pool does not reuse a non-deferred region until its tick completes. Several such dispatches in one tick each take a new region, so the total can reach the full slice count multiplied by the number of dispatches. On Android, device-local memory is system RAM, so this can exhaust memory and terminate the process.

Make these changes:

  • For a direct dispatch with zero workgroups, skip the scratch allocation and the dispatch.
  • Allocate one scratch buffer per pipeline, or one shared buffer, sized to the clamped maximum. Reuse it across dispatches, and add a compute-to-compute memory barrier between the dispatches that use it.

Keep written mobile SparseLayers images from being marked UnwrittenSparse.

On a mobile GPU, backable is true. If InitSparseLayers() fails there, the branch at Line 2781 is skipped because of !backable. The comment says the backable branch below then backs the image. That branch is not reached when texels <= (u64{1} << 28). A 32 MiB+ texture array is usually below that size, so it takes the texels <= 2^28 branch. That branch sets UnwrittenSparse without checking IsUnwrittenSparse. The image stays unbacked even though the guest already wrote data to it. Its layers sample as zero (black). The ASTC terrain arrays this PR moves to SparseLayers on phones are affected.

Exclude layered_sparse images from the first clause. They then reach the backable path or the plain backed fallback.

Maxwell3D::ProcessMacroBind wrote positions[start_address_ptr++] without
checking the index. A misparsed pushbuffer produced indices like
0x3a400040 and 0x81500e36 against the 0x80-entry table, writing gigabytes
past it and crashing the GPU thread.

Bound the index and drop the write, and when the host class reaches the
illegal method 0x1, discard the rest of that command block using its
declared count instead of executing thousands of bogus methods. The skip
survives entry boundaries so the next header parses aligned.

Also record the failing instruction's PC in the macro JIT; it stayed
zero, hiding where the JIT gave up.

FSEL shared the bitwise SEL case and so dropped the negation and absolute
bits of its sources. Ampere TXD/TLD with dimension 7, LOD 3 and up to four
components is a native array-cube vector sample; lower it to the two-operand
Maxwell form when the instruction fits and refuse it otherwise.

On nx2: the FSEL part is already there (Duck912's form); this brings the
native array-cube vector samples.

WalkBlock sizes each step from continuity_tracker, the number of pages
after the current one that are physically contiguous with it. That count
is meaningless when the current device page is unmapped: a run left over
from an earlier mapping can make the walk skip past the unmapped page and
hand on_unmapped a block wider than the hole, losing the dialogue text
Splatoon Raiders streams through such gaps.

Treat an unmapped page as a one-page block so the walk resynchronises on
the next page instead of trusting a run that does not start at it.

Two GUI crashes in Fortune's Weave read a null LRU item in
LeastRecentlyUsedCache::Free with id SIZE_MAX, under CreateBuffer ->
JoinOverlap -> DeleteBuffer from a compute dispatch. Only a buffer that
was inserted but not yet registered has that id, so a page table entry
still named an erased slot, CreateBuffer reused the slot for the new
buffer and then joined the new buffer with itself.

ResolveOverlaps now skips and clears page table entries whose slot is
not live, logging the first few. The inline index buffer resize erased
its slot without Unregister, leaving its pages and LRU item behind; it
now goes through DeleteBuffer, and DeleteBuffer resets inline_buffer_id
so a garbage-collected inline buffer is recreated instead of reused.

Reads walk back through every block until they find a definition, and
each multi-predecessor block on the way gets an operandless phi that is
usually trivial. Those phis, and the replaced register reads, stay in
their blocks as Identity instructions: a 2,572-block Mario Kart World
fragment shader got 222,000 of them for 126,000 real instructions, and
every pass until dead code elimination walked them. Those without uses
are now removed when the pass ends, in the order dead code elimination
would have removed them.

ReadVariable also reuses one walk stack instead of growing a new vector
on every read.

Registers already store their SSA definitions in the blocks. Predicates,
the condition flags and the indirect branch variable used one node-based
std::unordered_map each, keyed by block, and goto variables a map of such
maps; every read walks back through blocks, looking up (and inserting) a
definition in each. Those lookups and their allocations were ~13% of a
profile of the benchmark.

The fixed-count variables now live in the blocks next to the registers,
goto variables in one flat map keyed by (block, index). Lookups no longer
insert empty entries, which only the lookups themselves could see.

Every immediate operand goes through EmitContext::Const, and Sirit's
Constant deduplicates by building a std::vector of the instruction words
and hashing it: ~10% of the benchmark's profile, half of it in the
allocator. EmitContext now keeps the id of each u32 and f32 constant it
asked Sirit for, keyed by bit pattern as Sirit does, and returns it for
later uses. Sirit would have returned the same id, so the module does
not change.

CFG::InspectVisitedBlocks scanned every block of the function for each
label it analyzed, which made CFG construction quadratic in the number of
blocks. The blocks are kept sorted by their first instruction and never
overlap (virtual blocks are empty), so the only candidate is the last
non-empty block starting at or before the label: find it from
upper_bound. CFG time in the benchmark: 337 ms -> 181 ms.

When a read reaches a sealed block with several predecessors and no
definition, the pass created an operandless phi first, to break cycles,
read every predecessor, then removed the phi again when it was trivial,
which it almost always is (222,000 of 226,000 phis in the largest Mario
Kart World fragment shader). Each one was allocated, linked in, filled,
unlinked, reinserted as an Identity and later dropped.

The phi now stays pending: the block is marked, the operands are kept on
the side, and the phi is only created when a cycle reads it or when it
merges two different values. Nothing is inserted at the front of the
block in between, so it is created at the same place with the same
operands; trivial pending phis leave nothing behind, as the removed
phis' unused identities did not either.

Emitted SPIR-V is identical for the 11,883 modules of two Mario Kart
World disk caches (eden-shader-bench --hashes).

Translation reads live 3D engine state through the environment (constant buffer values,
texture descriptors through the texture pool registers, the viewport transform flag, HLE
replacements), which is why it had to run on the GPU thread. Detach() copies that state:
the stage's enabled constant buffers whole (their values get folded into the shader and
uniform memory is reused once the GPU is past the draw), the texture pool's device address
(read later with unsynchronized reads, through the device memory manager, which outlives the
GPU address space at shutdown), the viewport flag and the replacement table. It then drops
the engine pointer. It refuses, leaving the environment as it was, when the pool is not one
contiguous device range. ShaderCache::device_memory becomes protected for the pipeline cache.

…ows it

Each frame gets a 0x80000-entry slice of the descriptor payload, which
the Vulkan worker reads until it runs the commands recorded with it.
When a frame's descriptors overflow the slice, the GPU thread waits for
the worker to drain (WaitWorker) and starts the slice over.

Fortune's Weave writes over a million descriptors per frame (buffer-
backed texture arrays of hundreds of records per draw), so it overflowed
twice per frame, each time serializing the GPU thread with the worker.

Right after that wait every recorded command has run and nothing points
into the payload, so the slices now double there, up to four times
their initial size (about 400 MB for the guest queue instead of about
100 MB; only games that overflow grow it). Overflows past the cap still
wait as before.

A new graphics pipeline was translated (Maxwell code -> IR -> SPIR-V) on the GPU thread before
its draw, ~2-4 ms each, which is most of the first-lap stutter left in title 1 with
asynchronous shaders on. For native programs whose draw may be skipped (same rule as for a
pipeline whose driver compile is not done), the GPU thread now builds and detaches the
environments, queues translation and driver compile on new translation workers (half the
pipeline worker count, so compute compiles are not held up) and waits up to a budget
(EDEN_NX2_ASYNC_TRANSLATION_WAIT_MS, default 3 ms, 0 = never) on the job's future. Ready in
time: the draw uses it. Otherwise the draw is skipped and the pipeline adopted into
graphics_cache by a later draw; the disk cache and driver cache flush are queued at adoption,
on the GPU thread, as for pipelines built there. Compute pipelines and Switch 1 programs are
unchanged. EDEN_NX2_ASYNC_TRANSLATION=0 turns the new path off; a log line every 10 s counts
queued, ready-in-budget and adopted pipelines and their GPU-thread and worker time.

On nx2: keeps upstream's driver pipeline cache check, draw element count
and disk_pipelines record (also for adopted pipelines).

Switch 2 titles boot as a loose ExeFS (main, main.npdm, sdk, subsdk*,
romfs/ next to it). On Android those are content URIs, which cannot be
joined with '/': the VFS now finds children through the document
provider's listing (one JNI call per directory, sizes included),
returns a content directory's real name, and looks its parent up only
when asked.

The game list finds loose dumps (main + main.npdm, or in exefs/) in
shallow scans too and names them after their folder. "Load file" boots
a picked file; a loose main boots when a granted tree holds it, else
the dump's folder is asked for. Also fixes getGame for names without an
extension and the null std::string returned by fs_android before the

An image larger than the sparse address space (the Qualcomm driver also
refuses anything over 4 GiB) cannot be created even unbacked: Mario
Kart World's 8192x8192x68 BC6H virtual texture is 6 GB and was drawn as
the null image (dark/black surfaces on Android). Such images keep their
mip levels from the first one that fits on, like the GPU-decoded ASTC
arrays already do, and the plain upload paths now honour that:
UnswizzleImage can start at a level, so a trimmed layer upload stages
only the levels the host keeps.

Switch 2 compute shaders ask for 48 KB of shared memory; Adreno has 32
KB, and clamping it (Qualcomm, ARM, MoltenVK) left those shaders
reading and writing past the end, which showed up as artifacts in Mario
Kart World on Android. Such a shader now keeps its shared memory in a
storage buffer instead: a slice per workgroup, addressed through one
helper (loads, stores, atomics, the 8/16-bit store and CAS loops), with
barriers covering buffer memory too. The buffer is the last descriptor;
each dispatch binds a scratch buffer sized for its workgroups (4096 for
indirect dispatches, capped at 512 MiB). Slower, but correct.

The Qualcomm driver fails some Switch 2 pipelines with
VK_ERROR_UNKNOWN. Each pipeline now holds its stages' SPIR-V while it
builds, and on failure writes them to dump/failed_pipelines/<hash>_
<stage>.spv for spirv-val/spirv-dis.

The Qualcomm driver also rejects a Switch 2 compute shader with
VK_ERROR_UNKNOWN. Compute pipelines keep their SPIR-V while they build
and write it to dump/failed_pipelines on failure; shaders using the
shared memory emulation are written to dump/emulated_shared_memory, to
validate what the emulation generates.

…emory slices

The shader clamps its slice index, so workgroups past the last slice share it
within one dispatch. Splitting the dispatch would change the workgroup ids the
program reads, so it is not done here; a dispatch that would alias is logged
(the first few) so it is known whether any game reaches the limit (256 MiB or
the host's storage range, per workgroup size).

With the guest bytes compared in place, the stream was filled from guest

Resolves the conflicts with the 46 nx2 commits since c54bc22, the same way
as the rebased branch that was built for Android and Windows (clang-cl):

- Duck912 3c45b94 removed the game_dlss_network setting. Android keeps the
replacement upscale by default in KeplerCompute::GameDlssBlocker; the
game's own DLSS network is opt-in there with EDEN_NX2_GAME_DLSS=1
(its emulated tensor passes ran Turnip out of memory). The Android toggle
and strings for the removed setting are gone.
- The Android settings files keep the MKW 30/60 FPS, detail and
nx2_command_lists toggles without the removed DLSS entries.
- Eglantine-Community#492, Eglantine-Community#475 and the FP16 texture packing landed in nx2 and are taken from it.

Throttle the LOG_ERROR for out-of-range device addresses.

GpuToCpuAddress is on a hot path. Read, Write, GetPointer, ReadBlockUnsafe and the range overload call it for every access and for every page. If a guest maps a GPU page to a device address above MaxwellDeviceMemoryManager::AS_BITS, each access logs one error line. The GPU thread then spends its time formatting and writing log output.

Other new error paths in this file already limit their output, for example Read and Write. Use the same pattern here.

♻️ Proposed fix

     if ((dev_addr >> MaxwellDeviceMemoryManager::AS_BITS) != 0) {
- LOG_ERROR(HW_GPU, "GPU address {:#x} maps outside the device space, to {:#x}", gpu_addr,

Fall back to the general texture path.

A valid array-cube sample using descriptor buffer 3 now fails here. The existing general_tex path supports that binding. The same regression applies to other layouts rejected by this specialization. Use the specialized path only when its checks pass; otherwise use general_tex. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject coordinate vectors that cross shadow_boundary.

Dimension 7 consumes source_a through source_a + 3. With the default shadow_boundary at R244, a vector starting at R242 reaches reserved registers, but the current check only tests the base register. Reject or remap the complete coordinate range before emitting the native TEX.

Android 15 gives every thread its own PAC A/B keys, and NCE runs guest
PAC natively. Ocarina's SDK fiber switch signs the context with pacia on
one CPU core thread and checks it with autiasp on another, which fails
(SIGILL code 2, FPAC, at sdk+0x16d40c); the hang run spins in the
scheduler on the same cores.

Each CPU core thread disables the IA, IB, DA and DB keys before any
guest code runs on it (PR_PAC_SET_ENABLED_KEYS), so PAC and AUT pass
pointers through unchanged, as Dynarmic's identity PAC does. PACGA uses
the process-wide GA key and stays consistent. The keys are enabled again
before the thread returns, for the libc frames signed before. Android
arm64 with NCE only; EDEN_NX2_NCE_PAC_KEYS=1 keeps the keys.

Ocarina of Time sends method 0x1001 on the inline-to-memory subchannel.
The method is not executable, so it lands in the method sink, and
KeplerMemory::ConsumeSinkImpl wrote it to reg_array[0x1001] with
reg_array 0x7F words long. On Android this hits a guard page and the GPU
back thread dies with SIGSEGV; on desktop it silently corrupts memory.

Check the bound in the sink consumers of KeplerMemory, Fermi2D and
MaxwellDMA, as KeplerCompute already does, and ignore out-of-range
methods in KeplerMemory::CallMethod and Fermi2D::CallMethod instead of
asserting and writing anyway, as MaxwellDMA::CallMethod already does.

nx2_command_lists was off on Android because on an Odin 3 the copies
cost Mario Kart World ~45 ms of GPU-thread waiting a second and caused
flicker. Without them Ocarina of Time deadlocks about 20 s in: the GPU
reads command memory the game is already refilling, a semaphore release
is lost and channels 2, 3 and 5 wait on it forever.

Default the setting to on everywhere. On Android, Mario Kart World runs
without the copies unless its own custom settings set the option;
EDEN_NX2_COMMAND_LISTS still overrides both.
